We booked a family room for 2 nights as accommodation for our short trip to Cornwall. We had stayed at a few St Austell Brewery pub hotels in the past and always found them very comfortable and excellent value for money. In many ways, The Ship Inn bears all the same hallmarks - a lovely local pub in the heart of the town with good food and comfortable rooms. On arrival, we were advised that our family room was located in the adjoining cottage as opposed to within the main pub building. After a bit of a wait we were taken to the cottage and shown to the room. Access was via the separate front door, through a hallway to the rear of the building. There was another guest room located in the same area. The room (and communal area) felt damp and rather uninviting. We were struck by how small and cramped the room was and the lack of light. The room's door brushes with the bed on opening! From the main 'double' bedroom the view is to the rear of the property, looking into a small, untidy back yard. The bunk room's window, to the front, looks out onto the road. The room is very small but was sufficient. The bunk bed itself was dirty and stained, especially the underside of the top bunk which was disappointing. Again, the room felt damp. The bathroom was the most disappointing - it is absolutely tiny and by no means large enough to accommodate a family of four. Even a solo traveller has nowhere to put toiletries etc. We didn't want to spend any more time in the room than was necessary. We suspect bedrooms in the main pub building may offer a far better and brighter experience. Aside from the room, though, the pub is a bustling melting pot of locals and visitors alike and had a convivial atmosphere with a good range of draught beers and spirits. Our evening meal was good and enjoyable. Unusually, breakfast (which was included) was served only between 8am and 9am and we were asked to specify a reservation slot within the time period the night before. This did feel rather restrictive compared with other hotels. The breakfast was very pleasant and enjoyable with regular refills of coffee, water and juice, all served by a very welcoming and helpful member of staff. We wouldn't return to this particular pub as a family, based on our experience, but we wouldn't hesitate to stay at another St Austell Brewery pub in due course as we generally feel that they offer very good value for the money.

The worst food I’ve tasted in a long time. I am still trying to remove the taste of burnt sausage and sweet potato purée. Others in our party had what can only be described as microwaved chicken.

From the moment I walked through the door on Saturday afternoon (18th Jan), I was greeted with a warm welcome from Lisa. After ordering a Korev and taking a quick look at the menu – food was ordered. Cutlery was delivered to the table and confirmation that my food was on the way quickly followed. The food was amazing, and the follow-up from the staff also made sure I had everything that I needed. The table was also quickly cleared once my food was finished. I took the opportunity to grab another couple of Korev’s, and was served politely and efficiently by Scarlet, who also took my booking for a table for the following day… Sunday: greeted by Ben at the bar, my partner and I were served quickly and shown to our table by a real fire – a welcome treat on a not so warm day. Sunday roasts (and deserts) were ordered along with several drinks – what a great range of Tarquins! Ben, Lisa and Scarlet all worked well together as a team, looking after every table with a personal touch. Whether you sat down for a light bite, starter, main, or desert – the level of service was excellent. The food is prepared and served with passion and delivered with pride. We’ll be back in Cornwall in March and looking forward to visiting The Ship Inn again. This is undoubtedly a place to enjoy great food and drinks, delivered to you by people who care! Thank you all for a great experience – See You Soon!!

Beautiful pub in an unbeatable location. From what we saw the food also looked great however.. It was let down by the staff and a bizarre customer experience. Myself and my partner were in the bar area for a few hours sat in a dark corner enjoying a few rounds of drinks hiding out of the rain. While we were in there it was quite busy and the staff had mistakenly booked in a large group and placed them over 2 small round tables (our table and the table next to us which were not reserved). We were rudely told by either the owner or bar manager to move dispute being halfway through our drinks and being told we could sit anywhere near the bar… we understand the pressures put on staff during busy periods but found their attitude rude and a bit humiliating to be honest. No effort was made to reseat us else where and we also found it hard to believe a group of 8 were coming in to be seated around the 2 small tables in the bar. After standing up by the bar and finding somewhere else to go We left feeling embarrassed and disappointed with our experience and sadly we do not recommend.

A great choice for a NYE meal with the family due to the fantastic atmosphere from the live music and the other pub guests! We had a table for 4 (including 2 children) booked in advance and the lovely staff booted some locals out of the way for us - but there was no hard feelings as everyone was having a good time. The service was amazing throughout, with a very jolly gentleman from Liverpool looking after us and the bar staff nice and smiley. We all filed out at midnight for the fireworks on the harbour opposite! It was magical. Would definitely recommend!

Busy night of the year, we weren't given a warm welcome or even much of a recognition on arrival. Once eventually seated we were not told that it was bar service and sat and observed bar staff walking past us serving other tables, no one stopped to ask if we needed anything. When we flagged someone down we were told to go to the bar to order - fine if only we knew this. We then waited well over an hour for our food with no update on how long our food would be, or to inform us that there was a delay. We then once again flagged down a member of staff to ask if our food would be much longer and were told it would be 2 minutes. The staff member that eventually brought us our food was very pleasant and apologetic of our wait, but it would have been nice to be informed throughout the wait. Once the food arrived some meals were nice, however the pie was very overcooked and dry, not tasty at all. Overall a very disappointing visit, we would have understood having to wait seeing as it was so busy, had the communication been good.

Mousehole is a lovely idyllic harbour, and the Ship Inn fits in perfectly. We stayed overnight here on the 13th of August, the staff were very pleasant and eager to help. Food in the Restaurant was first class. The accommodation was cosy and clean with views of the Harbour and the sea. I got up early the next morning to take photos of the Sunrise and this was a spectacular event, about half an hour after sunrise the local sea life (Seal's) started to pop their heads out of the water. Parking was just a fiver for the night. Breakfast was great too. Will probably visit here next time we visit Cornwall.

After a long 15km hike along the coast I found myself in Mousehole looking for a nice pub to enjoy some lunch. As a vegan I was delighted to see they had lots of vegan options on the menu. The staff were friendly and the service was quick. However, once I had finished my vegan falafel wrap, which was delicious, I started the side of crisps and salad. To my surprise, there was a prawn buried under the crisps. I went to show this to the staff but did so in a kind manner as I didn't want to be disruptive. They looked a bit confused and said they'd go see what happened for me with seemingly very little empathy. Someone who I assume was a manager came out, apologised briefly and asked if she could get me a drink or something?? Firstly, I said I don't drink and she didn't offer up much after that. Then a friend of mine suggested I get a dessert and so she offered the cheapest vegan option on the menu?? I had a £9 vegan dish that had a prawn in it... And all I got was a single scoop of vegan ice cream worth £2.50... Considering some people have severe shellfish allergies and prawns are finding their way into meals that shouldn't have them, I'd say this is careless. Overall, very disappointed with the experience and lack of empathy from the staff. If I order a vegan dish I expect it to be vegan.

Really lovely food, would definitely eat here again. There was only one young girl who seemed to be on her own serving everyone, which meant there was a bit of a wait but nothing too bad. I had fish and chips, which was to die for - and my husband had pie and mash (which I also sampled, and was also amazing!) The seating area was quite small, and we were seated next right next to a family which was a bit cramped, but would still recommend nonetheless!

I would give this 0 stars if I could. Never been made to feel so unwelcome. Walked in as a group of 9 and found a table. Just settling onto the table when a worker with glasses and messy dark hair came over and said you can order drinks but no food. The reason we went into the restaurant was to get food as we had a busy day and had 5 hungry children in the group. The staff member said he had asked his chef and the chef refused to cater food for a table of 9. My wife begged and said we are happy to wait and only order the kids food but the staff member refused with no explanation. This was the first time visiting and we had only just entered the building so there is no way he had asked the chef anything in thar time. As a local I am appalled that a St Austells Brewery establishment would allow such awful behaviour and would turn their nose up to an easy £100 plus table because there was 9 in our group even though the table comfortably seat 12 plus.

Ship Inn is a wonderful place to get a delicious meal and receive impeccable service. They attended to our every need with a kind smile and friendliness that was truly genuine. And, being Americans, when we weren’t sure how to eat something we haven’t had before, like Yorkshire Pudding, they kindly explained it. Another nice thing - I’m not a vegetarian but I ordered a vegetable dish as my main course. They made a point of asking if I needed it to be vegan. I didn’t, but this was so thoughtful. And the atmosphere is incredible - just what you’d imagine for a warm, old, traditional restaurant in the UK. Added plus - it’s dog friendly!

Disappointing Stay at Ship Inn I recently had the displeasure of staying at Ship Inn and unfortunately, it was not the experience I had hoped for. Despite paying £160 for bed and breakfast, the room left much to be desired. Firstly, the room itself was dated, with a filthy divan base and a carpet that was far from clean. The presence of mould in the shower was also a major letdown. Additionally, due to leaving early, the promised breakfast of "a croissant and a bit of fruit" never materialised, despite assurances fromstaff. This lack of follow-through on basic amenities was frustrating and unacceptable. Even the dinner we paid for on top, while tasty, was served in rather small portions, leaving us feeling hungry and dissatisfied. This was particularly disappointing considering the reputation of the establishment. Overall, my stay at Ship Inn was underwhelming and certainly not the ideal start to a holiday. I hope the management takes these issues seriously and works towards improving the quality of their accommodations and services.

Food was average at best. Not much choice on the menu and many items not available. Disappointing.

Food turned up, soggy wet and greasy and all stuck together in one big lump. Quite un-edible. Toast was soggy and undercooked, really disappointed after spending a lot of money such poor quality food

So sad if it’s true they are closing this St Ives branch of their 3 stores. Sad if the town is making business too expensive to run. Thankfully they do delivery, adds about £1 per pasty. Their vegan pasty has the biggest variety of vegetables inside. I love buying few to take home and freeze each May when the St Ives Food Festival is on. St Ives has the biggest selection of pasty shops with such variety of fillings and pastries, both savoury and dessert. By the time you eat from stalls on the beach of the food festival, have a fruit and custard pasty or amazing cakes for breakfast and a savoury pasty or eat out at fantastic fish restaurants for dinner, just accept you will come home several pounds heavier. Next year i had planned to ask Pengs to have several vegan pasties frozen for me take home. At least i hope they return to St Ives with a stall on the beach for the next May festival. In fact i wish all the pasty shops would get together to have tasting trays of their pasties, on the one stall on the beach festival. It’s just impossible to get thru them all in 3 days. And Pengs will be most missed.
