Always friendly polite staff and the food is second to none 😁

Be cautious if you're ordering for collection - there is an upcharge per item and a 50p service charge. They didn't make it until I actually arrived so you're not paying for convenience, you're just paying extra for the sake of it. Shop is lovely, modern and clean. Staff were friendly and service was prompt. Onto the food. The fish cake was huge and tasted great, the sausage in batter was nice but had a disappointing level of batter. The chips though? Awful. They're wet, insipid and lacking flavor or warmth. Our request for salt and vinegar was ignored which we didn't realise until we'd gone home. I've had much better chips for far less money. We started eating them within 5 minutes of collection, perhaps eating them immediately would warrant the awards?

Haddock was massive and cooked to perfection Chips can be hit and miss in any fish shop all depends on how long they have been kept warm.Highly Recommended.

My son was envolved in an accident whilst i was ordering food here a heavy menu board was left leaning where it shouldnt have been put! (Quickly removed and put out back by lady serving!) My 6 year old son had a bang to his head and had a graze as was knocked over by it. Appollagies were made by lady serving in shop but have not received the phone call following day to see how he was which they took my number down for!!👎🤔 I was going to leave it!!... but i dont think i will now! Anyone know any good no win no fee companies?🤷‍♂️

Just tried the ship deck fish,chips and Irish curry sauce for the first time and I will definitely be back! The fish was fresh,the chips were amazing and the curry sauce was tasty.The staff were all friendly and it was spotlessly clean.

Unfortunately it seems that this once quality fish and chip shop has bought into its own hype and awards and has taken its eye off the ball. I entered the shop which was empty but had a hot plate full of food, a bit of a concern. The attitude from the young lad serving made me feel a bit like I was disturbing his conversation with his co-workers. He wasn’t rude but wasn’t very friendly either. I ordered a battered sausage, fish cake and chips. The fish cake was okay, I had one from here previously and it was maybe the best one I’ve ever had, this one looked similar but was closer to being a potato cake than a fish cake, very little fish in there and was cold in the middle. The Sausage was inedible. The batter was so hard I nearly cracked my tooth I tried to peel it off and I couldn’t, it was glued to sausage, I broke/smashed a bit off but the sausage was so dry and chewy I gave up. The chips themselves were somewhat limp and mushy on the inside yet chewy on the outside. I would say they weee bordering on stale and had most certainly been sitting for a while. Adding to this the top layer of chips had so much salt and vinegar poured on them they were vile. This sums up the lack of care that seems to have crept into the shop. This shop 6 months ago was always packed with queues outside the door, I have visited every 4-5 weeks since and have seen a steady decline and after throwing away 70% of this food I will not be returning. A real shame.

Been here twice and both times I've had issues with the food. The first time I was sold a stale mouldy bread roll that clearly wasn't freshly made. The 2nd time I was missing items from my order. And a lot of it was inedible. i ended up throwing most of the £30+ order in the bin. Both sausages I had were tough, the fish batter was chewy and the chips were limp. I did try giving them a second chance but it's clearly a consistency issue here as everyone else seems to love it, but it's safe to say I won't be returning.

We came from Abertillery today to try the fish and chips in SHIP DECK. They were lovely really enjoyed them. Worth travelling all that way to try them. I had cod and chips , my husband had haddock and chips and our daughter had Scampi and chips .

When we got there and placed our order it was empty inside and out. We then had to wait 30 minutes while locals came in, had a chat, placed their order, collected their order, and left. I’d like to say it was worth the wait but it wasn’t.

2.10pm on a Tuesday afternoon queuing out the door. Great fast system to get everyone served, all customers gave orders to a very efficient young gentleman behind the counter, all paid, all had a numbered bleeper device and then waited to receive their food order. A very competent, sufficient chip shop. Would definitely return. Offer of the day was hunters chicken loaded chips for £5.75. Ample amount a great buy.

Clean, inviting and professional food establishment. Food is always fresh, extremely delicious and generous portions. Variety of menu items and they offer gluten free too! Well worth the visit won't go anywhere else now for fish and chips.

Really fast service, ordered on the app and ready 5 minutes later. The problem with award-winning places is people expect to be mind blown from the hype. It was a solid cod supper, price was very reasonable as it came with peas and (really nice) tartare sauce. Fruity curry was lovely. Fish batter a bit greasy but chips solid, nothing to fault and would be a top-tier chippy anywhere. Staff on the ball too.

I visited Ship Deck for the first time today. We ordered scampi, calamari and cod and chips. All of these were very good. I ordered and paid online and with an estimated collection time. I arrived on time but my order wasn't ready and it took a further 12 minutes. Overall the experience was good, the food was very nice and the staff were friendly, so we will be back.

I would have given this 5 stars before they won that award. But they've taken that as an excuse to raise the prices and make it harder to order what you used to get. It's sub par at best now. Also the onion rings are minging

Absolutely amazing Went after work with the Mrs and the dog to sit outside and switch off. The staff were amazing even coming out to clean and refill a water bowl without asking. The food was amazing so fresh and so cheap Had a chicken sharer box thing large chips sausage and battered halloumi fries and 2 drinks was like £16 and probably the best food I've had round here Highly recommend

1st time ordering from here tonight. Fish & chips, curry & chips & jumbo sausage & chips. No-one was disappointed, the food was lovely, all fresh with the fish to die for, perfect batter. The guys in the shop were all friendly and helpful. Really clean environment that's gives you reassurance that the hygiene standards are spot on.will definitely be back.

Great service and great food. These guys have won awards and its easy to see why. Also the prices are not as high as you'd expect from an award winning business selling sustainable, traceable produce. They are very competitive and cheaper than many others.

This used it be very good but of late it's disappointing 😞 and you have to check you got everything you ordered because quite often parts of the order are missing.

CLOSED!!! For the second weekend in a row this place has been closed when it states open on google! I never give a bad review but this is literally ridiculous! Each way is at least half hour for us so a total of 2.5 hours wasted journeys. Being voted best in the UK I would have thought you would consider people may travel to you…. Please keep your opening hours on google updated!

Fish very good but chips a bit earthy

Excellent food..the large haddock meal which easily compares with East Coast of England chip shops ..chips were golden and juicy, haddock batter was perfect as was the fish, will return

The Mr wanted to stop over here otw back to Cardiff because no trip to UK would be complete without fish and chips. Ship deck has been crowned the best takeaway chippy in the country for 2024 and we were not disappointed! The Mr ordered the signature cod with chips, tartar sauce and mushy peas. We were served a generous portion of fish with well seasoned batter. The chips were thick cut and very well seasoned too! Very very good! The friendly crew was great too and that definitely made the whole experience even better. Def recommend!- another plus point, they use sustainably caught fish and recyclable packaging. They have outdoor seating for those who wish to “dine in”.

Went out of my way to try this one as its an award winning shop. Was quick to place order then given a little alarm. Could've sat in car but as it was quite valmy I sat outside and waited. Order wasn't long at all and smelt amazing. I received an apology for the wait but I didn't notice it so wasn't excessive. To be honest I was surprised it wasn't longer for such a well advertised place. Other half and shared a huge fish which as chunky, not over battered and clearly fresh. Chips were also lovely and enough to share. Overall loved it and fussy other half said we'd have them again, praise indeed. Very tasty not greasy or mushy and worth the little drive to fetch them. Totally recommend a visit

Really disappointed that their website shows a very good selection of gluten free items but when we arrived we were told they do not do ANY gluten free so we came away with nothing after a 30 minute drive, especially to try out this highly recommended chip shop

Service was nice, engaging and friendly. The atmosphere was pleasant, good looking place. The chips were clearly not freshly made and there was no salt on either the fish or the chips. The tartar sauce was clearly bought in, served warm and in dirty plastic tubs, it was so inedible that I made my own, fresh, at home in 15 minutes to have with the fish. The mushy peas are also clearly not fresh, bought in, nuked in the microwave and inedible like the tartar sauce. The fish would have been great if it was salted, the batter was nice and crispy. I came here because they were award winning, but unfortunately I can't see why. I've been to a lot of chip shops and this is not going to be one I'll be returning to. Gutted!

The most amazing fish and chips ever - drove from Cardiff as we had heard a lot of good things and it didn’t disappoint. The fish was so fresh and the chips wonderful. Definitely recommend the Irish curry sauce. Can’t wait to return.

Well what can I say Food fish chips and sausage in batter Food fish chips and fish cake Batter was amazing not oily fish was beautiful white and chunky cooked to perfection All the food was cooked perfectly also hand wipes were available along with forks Also outside picnic benches were available outside for eating I travelled 8 miles to try out this amazing fish and chip shop and in my opinion this chip shop is the best around and well worth the travel and value for money Not forgetting the quality was second to none well done all

This is by far the best Fresh Fish & Chips in South wales 💯 ,it was highly recommended by a family friend and I’m truly happy with the quality of the food. The staff is friendly and provides a great service . It was worth the 15min drive for me and I can now say I have tasted the best British fish and chips 😄I will definitely be back. Thank you

I recently tried the fish and chips at this local shop, and I must say, it's a hidden gem. The batter was perfectly crispy, the fish was flaky, and the chips were golden and delicious. The portion size was generous, and the staff was friendly. A top-notch spot for a classic British meal!

Great place for Vegans/Vegetarians. These people have a very high awareness of dietary needs. Chips are fried separately from meat and they also have separate Vegan Menu. Moreover, the service is very nice and friendly. I would highly recommend. After my second visit I want to tell you more about this place. So... very clean, well looking, well organised, fresh and tasty food and finally amazing customer service! I'm a driver and it's alway a challenge for me as vegetarian to find places where I can be sure that my food is not contaminated with meat. I wish such places as Ship Deck are everywhere across UK. Many thanks guys.

Lovely little place with great food, arguably a little too small as it can quickly get cramped so you could get stuck waiting outside if it's busy but nevertheless the food is lovely and at a good price

Best chip shop on Earth. Whole family had massive selection including one of the vegan options which was surprisingly good. The fish was excellent perfectly cooked the chips were fresh tasty and the reception from the staff was friendly and helpful and funny. Great effort. Ill definately return.

Ship Deck is always our 1st choice whenever we fancy fish & chips. Normally the quality of the fish is excellent. Until today. We ordered 2 portions of fish and 1 of chips unfortunately the fish portions were very poor. As soon as I opened the boxes I could tell they were mainly batter and not much fish (as you can see in the photos). I am hoping this is a one off otherwise we will have to choose a different fish shop for our takeaways in future.

When we have the occasional chippy treat it has to be from here. Friendly staff, great food and great order accuracy. A well presented premises, bright and welcoming. If you've driven past here and wondered to yourself what it's like, give it a try- you're missing out!!

We travelled from Tonyrefail, where Ryan, the owner lives, for the ship decks fish and chips today, gorgeous food, freshly cooked to order and very generous portions.

I’m from Australia and have been looking for some decent fish and chips. I’ve been all over the NZ and Aus coast eating fish and chips. This place is by far one of the best I’ve had and by far the best in the UK and Wales. The fish is not oily and you really taste the fish but have a great crunch from the fish batter. The chips taste sweet like a potato should with that perfect fry chip flavour. The smashed peas and tartar sauce were perfect and the whole experience was great. Thank you and I am glad to have found such an amazing chippie so close to home 🙏🏼😂🐖

I visited on gluten-free night. (First Monday of the month) Wow, I wasn't disappointed! The fish and chips were cooked fresh. The batter was so light and crunchy, and the chips were beautiful. I had the GF curry and some mushy peas, too, and they were both so tasty! My partner had the normal fish and chips and was so impressed. Will definitely be visiting again very soon!

Food was lush. No wonder they have won the best chippy in Wales. The lunch box deal is perfect.

Called here on Saturday Evening 4th November whilst looking after our grandchildren in Machen, & following UK reviews. The service was excellent but the chips were very, very greasy like they had not been shaken or rested of fat & looked dull & greasy as well. The fish was ok, but greasy as well. Children enjoyed the sausages. The chips we have at Ocean Blue in Llandybie & Neil's in St Clears are by far superior in taste & quality, without any greasy taste or colouring etc. Ocean Blues fish is far superior as well.

Amazing chips and Halloumi dippers. No seating inside but a nice little area to sit outside with the dog! Great selection on the menu - definitely be back to try some other bits. Fruit curry had too many bits for me but it tasted lovely. Friendly staff and all really fresh. Worth the trip to Caerphilly for the chips on their own but stay for the rest of the food.

Don't know what all the fuss is about? Top in UK 🤷. I went to Beales in Porthcawl Saturday and the fish was hands down better than this. Huge lumps of cod that didn't fall apart compared to this.
