One fish fresh and moist the other one dry and probably been hanging around for a while. Mushy peas lack depth and flavour, easy to let standards drop when doing well 😳

Award winning for a reason - great chippy! Situated on the main strip in Trethomas, this has become the best in the area. Clean with great staff and options to eat outside, this is an incredible place to come for fish and chips. Much is cooked quickly to order. The fish and double cooked chips were excellent. Peas and tasty curry sauce also. The supper option comes with p3as and tartae sauce. All very well packaged. Highly rate this place and will love coming back here time after time.

The service is great staff are super friendly and food is spot on every time we visit this place. You’ll taste why they earned their awards!

Wow best fish and chips I've had in ages.

Fresh and tasty every time. Well worth a visit

Use this place regular and found the fish and chips excellent until lately. The last twice had to throw the fish away as it was so dry and unpalatable. Tonight I had corned beef pie and chips as I didn't want a repeat of the last time. When I opened the box the chips looked disgusting lots of scrimps and black potatoes again threw most of them in bin I took a photo on opening the box but there's no way of uploading it. It's all very well to display the Trophies that's Been won but it seems the standards have dropped now they've achieved the awards. Will I be buying food here again???? Absolutley no way, I'll go elsewhere where the quality is more consistent.

Absolutely brilliant. We drove a hour out of our way to try it after reading reviews. Sadly it won't be a regular for us as it's 2.5hrs away but very glad we took the detour today.

Freshly cooked fish and chips do not come better than the Ship Deck. I have visited several times and have always enjoyed my meal. The place is clean and tidy. Friendly service and even our furry friends are catered for.

1 hour and 40 mins wait..... not acceptable and will never order again, only reason i gave it a 2 is the food is good

Avoid! Won’t be eating here again , mushy chips , sausages that look 3 days old and stale

Absolutely gorgeous chips, also had the x3 fishbutes that were so big , crispy and very tasty. Delicious, my daughter had the sausage in batter and said its the best she's has.

Very good fish and chips. Often very busy because it's so popular. So be prepared to wait a bit for your order, even if you ordered in advance. Staff are friendly and the food is very good. If you like fish and chips, this is the place to go. Award winners for food source and sustainability, as well as good takeaways!

Best fish and chip shop in the country

Came here on occasion a few years ago and was always pleased. After some time away from the area I went somewhere else and wasn’t hugely impressed, so I thought I’d try Ship Deck again. Delicious. Nice big chunks of chicken in the curry sauce, and the curry sauce itself had an unexpected but delicious five-spice flavour to it. This will be my default chip shop from now on.

We were down from Manchester, staying in Cardiff for two nights. Our fish and chips on the Sunday evening was so good we came back for Monday's dinner. On both nights the fish was first rate and without fault - thin crispy batter over a generous sized and succulent piece of cod. The chips cooked by Gavin the first evening had a slightly crispy coating and were best chips we'd had for years. Unfortunately Kyle couldn't replicate the same standard the next day, but they were still good. All staff were pleasant, helpful and efficient. On the downside, the menu wasn't working on the Sunday so we couldn't browse the offerings and prices. On both evenings there was no curry; despite arriving particularly early on the Monday to ensure we didn't miss out. A problem with the order, apparently. On arriving back in Manchester I found a Ship Deck "bleeper" in my luggage. I posted it along with a note about our dining experiences, enclosing my email address, using a tracked service. Disappointingly I didn't get a response. A number of shortcomings for the UK's Best Fish & Chip shop, but we certainly enjoyed our visits and hope to be back again when we look forward to the curry!

Ordered fish to be delivered batter was really hard and hardly any fish inside which was tough. Fish was very clearly overcooked and cold. Never had a complaint before now, Won’t be ordering again.

Visit here weekly send to have gone downhill lately if I’m honest chips very dry fish is mainly batter i think I’ll be trying elsewhere for a while.

Over from England, visiting family. Recommended by a family member, as we are only just up the road in the Premier Inn. Lovely crispy chips, with plenty of salt and vinegar. Curry sauce, very tasty and nice and thick. Proper wooden cutlery too, not just a 2 pronged fork! Details matter. Very quick and courteous service. Will definitely be coming back when next visiting the area.

We decided to drive from Magor to try the famous chips . The staff were friendly and very efficient. The food looked fresh and the smells were incredible. We ordered gravy and chips sausage and chips and a sausage a batter and chips .. the chips were some of the best chips I've ever had and all 3 of us agreed the hot food was delicious. And very reasonably priced. We also ordered one victoria sponge and 2 chocfudge cakes .... the fudge cake was OK!! The victoria sponge I'm sorry to say was dreadful. The cake had a very unpleasant chemical taste and after one bite went in the bin . If we had just ordered hot food it would of been 5 stars no questions. But the cake really was bad .

Very highly rated food, probably the best fish and chips I've ever had and I would sacrifice a newborn for their fish cakes, luckily I don't have to. Relatively good value especially considering the quality and very accessible from Caerphilly. Only bug was last time the chips were wrapped in paper instead of in the box and quite a bit stuck to the paper which I didn't have as an issue the last two times. Lovely guys in there and they have a cute little outdoor seating area

Had to edit this review unfortunately - it was great but on my last couple of visits when the owner isn’t running the fryers the standards drop. They’ve also stopped doing fruity curry and the Irish stuff is awful. Seems strange as the fruity curry here was the nicest I’ve tasted anywhere.

Placed our order at 5.30pm, rang them an hour later to see where it was and got told we were next out! Food didn’t arrive until 7.45pm!! Food was lovely but waiting 2 hours isn’t acceptable really

I've always loved it here but was left really disappointed. I ordered a delivery on a Wednesday night thinking it would be delivered in no time. The restaurant changed my delivery time without my knowledge. My disappointment is from the time I placed my order to the time they were going to deliver my meal would have been 2 hrs. I did call and ask them to cancel my order I literally only ordered two meals. I honestly think this has put me off ordering from you again. I understand you guys are extremely busy but two hrs wait is a joke.

Lovely food and the fish and chips was very lovely

Absolutely gorgeous freshly cooked boiling hot food, nice crispy batter covering beautifully cooked white cod, the double cooked chips are really good nice crisp outside with fluffy potato inside, homemade tartare sauce is a great accompliment along with the mushy peas,we always get the fish supper as I get double mushy peas as the wife doesn't like mushy peas lol,gets pretty busy but is well worth the wait, staff very helpful don't know how they manage to smile they work their socks off. Our go to take out and for us it's as good as steins in Padstow, highly recommended, keep up the standard guys you have a fab business, hope you continue to get those awards.

Terrible portions for price. Overrated.

Tried this chip shop for the first time as it sounded great with all the reviews and awards but sadly we were disappointed. The service was good and efficient and friendly but the food did not come up to our expectations so will not be going back. The mushy peas we ordered were really odd and had an aweful taste to them like a chemical cleaner so had to throw them away. The batter on the fish was tough and thick and the fish was thin so did not enjoy it and had to throw away. The chips were O.K. but nothing special so all in all would not recommend and cannot understand the award status at all.

What a feast! Some of the best fish we’ve had - ordered the haddock and it was so thick and batter was light and crispy! Chips were well cooked too. Definitely feeling full after that.

Drove up from Porthcawl to sample the food, What can I say apart from excellent. Service was friendly and quick. All the food was fresh and cooked to order The fish was flakey with crunchy piping hot batter chips again were superb. If your ever near this place I suggest you hold off on making your tea and pick up something from the Ship yard Absolutely first class we will definitely return.

Be cautious if you're ordering for collection - there is an upcharge per item and a 50p service charge. They didn't make it until I actually arrived so you're not paying for convenience, you're just paying extra for the sake of it. Shop is lovely, modern and clean. Staff were friendly and service was prompt. Onto the food. The fish cake was huge and tasted great, the sausage in batter was nice but had a disappointing level of batter. The chips though? Awful. They're wet, insipid and lacking flavor or warmth. Our request for salt and vinegar was ignored which we didn't realise until we'd gone home. I've had much better chips for far less money. We started eating them within 5 minutes of collection, perhaps eating them immediately would warrant the awards?

Haddock was massive and cooked to perfection Chips can be hit and miss in any fish shop all depends on how long they have been kept warm.Highly Recommended.

My son was envolved in an accident whilst i was ordering food here a heavy menu board was left leaning where it shouldnt have been put! (Quickly removed and put out back by lady serving!) My 6 year old son had a bang to his head and had a graze as was knocked over by it. Appollagies were made by lady serving in shop but have not received the phone call following day to see how he was which they took my number down for!!👎🤔 I was going to leave it!!... but i dont think i will now! Anyone know any good no win no fee companies?🤷‍♂️

Just tried the ship deck fish,chips and Irish curry sauce for the first time and I will definitely be back! The fish was fresh,the chips were amazing and the curry sauce was tasty.The staff were all friendly and it was spotlessly clean.

Unfortunately it seems that this once quality fish and chip shop has bought into its own hype and awards and has taken its eye off the ball. I entered the shop which was empty but had a hot plate full of food, a bit of a concern. The attitude from the young lad serving made me feel a bit like I was disturbing his conversation with his co-workers. He wasn’t rude but wasn’t very friendly either. I ordered a battered sausage, fish cake and chips. The fish cake was okay, I had one from here previously and it was maybe the best one I’ve ever had, this one looked similar but was closer to being a potato cake than a fish cake, very little fish in there and was cold in the middle. The Sausage was inedible. The batter was so hard I nearly cracked my tooth I tried to peel it off and I couldn’t, it was glued to sausage, I broke/smashed a bit off but the sausage was so dry and chewy I gave up. The chips themselves were somewhat limp and mushy on the inside yet chewy on the outside. I would say they weee bordering on stale and had most certainly been sitting for a while. Adding to this the top layer of chips had so much salt and vinegar poured on them they were vile. This sums up the lack of care that seems to have crept into the shop. This shop 6 months ago was always packed with queues outside the door, I have visited every 4-5 weeks since and have seen a steady decline and after throwing away 70% of this food I will not be returning. A real shame.

Been here twice and both times I've had issues with the food. The first time I was sold a stale mouldy bread roll that clearly wasn't freshly made. The 2nd time I was missing items from my order. And a lot of it was inedible. i ended up throwing most of the £30+ order in the bin. Both sausages I had were tough, the fish batter was chewy and the chips were limp. I did try giving them a second chance but it's clearly a consistency issue here as everyone else seems to love it, but it's safe to say I won't be returning.

We came from Abertillery today to try the fish and chips in SHIP DECK. They were lovely really enjoyed them. Worth travelling all that way to try them. I had cod and chips , my husband had haddock and chips and our daughter had Scampi and chips .

When we got there and placed our order it was empty inside and out. We then had to wait 30 minutes while locals came in, had a chat, placed their order, collected their order, and left. I’d like to say it was worth the wait but it wasn’t.

2.10pm on a Tuesday afternoon queuing out the door. Great fast system to get everyone served, all customers gave orders to a very efficient young gentleman behind the counter, all paid, all had a numbered bleeper device and then waited to receive their food order. A very competent, sufficient chip shop. Would definitely return. Offer of the day was hunters chicken loaded chips for £5.75. Ample amount a great buy.

Clean, inviting and professional food establishment. Food is always fresh, extremely delicious and generous portions. Variety of menu items and they offer gluten free too! Well worth the visit won't go anywhere else now for fish and chips.

I would have given this 5 stars before they won that award. But they've taken that as an excuse to raise the prices and make it harder to order what you used to get. It's sub par at best now. Also the onion rings are minging

Absolutely amazing Went after work with the Mrs and the dog to sit outside and switch off. The staff were amazing even coming out to clean and refill a water bowl without asking. The food was amazing so fresh and so cheap Had a chicken sharer box thing large chips sausage and battered halloumi fries and 2 drinks was like £16 and probably the best food I've had round here Highly recommend

1st time ordering from here tonight. Fish & chips, curry & chips & jumbo sausage & chips. No-one was disappointed, the food was lovely, all fresh with the fish to die for, perfect batter. The guys in the shop were all friendly and helpful. Really clean environment that's gives you reassurance that the hygiene standards are spot on.will definitely be back.

Great service and great food. These guys have won awards and its easy to see why. Also the prices are not as high as you'd expect from an award winning business selling sustainable, traceable produce. They are very competitive and cheaper than many others.

Hunters chicken was just shredded chicken in bbq sauce the fish was soggy and the chips were hard

This used it be very good but of late it's disappointing 😞 and you have to check you got everything you ordered because quite often parts of the order are missing.

CLOSED!!! For the second weekend in a row this place has been closed when it states open on google! I never give a bad review but this is literally ridiculous! Each way is at least half hour for us so a total of 2.5 hours wasted journeys. Being voted best in the UK I would have thought you would consider people may travel to you…. Please keep your opening hours on google updated!

Excellent food..the large haddock meal which easily compares with East Coast of England chip shops ..chips were golden and juicy, haddock batter was perfect as was the fish, will return
