Shi Shang Chinese Restaurant in York

We usually dine here when staying in York (once or twice a year). The food is always excellent, service friendly and efficient and good atmosphere. Really good value for money. You can usually tell a good Chinese restaurant when the majority of the patrons are Chinese! And a few famous snooker players!!

I highly recommend this Chinese I will be honest it's the best Chinese food I've tasted and if you like your Prawn toast this is the place to go best I've tasted and I love my Prawn toast the food and service is outstanding!!!

La primera vez que pruebo este lugar y sin duda ser el último, tanto nuestras patatas fritas eran piel en patatas fritas no patatas fritas como se indica en el menú, tanto eran frías como quebradizas, mi pollo al curry era aguada y pocos trozos de pollo, mi prometida pollo agridulce era casi todas las verduras.

Visiting from Glasgow. The food was absolutely delicious and the service from all the staff was first class. Highly recommend and hopefully return on my next visit to the beautiful York.

Authentic Chinese restaurant. Large selection of excellent food. Usually loads of Chinese students eating there which speaks volumes for the food.

The service attitude is poor. The attitude of the waiters towards Chinese people is obviously different from that of people from other countries. Serving was slow. I waited nearly 20 minutes for a meal I ordered, and even the Indonesian customers at the next table were served all the dishes. My egg Fried Rice was still not served. I asked the waitress before she said she forgot to prepare, it's just a joke because all the dishes on the bill are clearly stated, the possibility of forgetting to prepare is unlikely. The prices of the dishes are relatively expensive and the taste is average. The service attitude is poor, and the attitude of the waiters towards Chinese and people from other countries is obviously different. The serving speed was slow. I had to wait nearly 20 minutes for the rice I ordered. Even the dishes of the Indonesian customers at the next table were served, but my egg fried rice was not served yet. I asked the waitress and she said she forgot to prepare it, which was a joke! Obviously all the dishes are clearly written on the bill. I think it is unlikely that I forgot to prepare them. The prices of the dishes are on the expensive side and the taste is average.

Two hours for a delivery is not acceptable.

Tuvimos entrantes, cosas como tostadas de gambas y sal y pimienta de pollo y un dip de chile dulce, luego en la red, tuve pollo szechuan y huevo arroz frito, mi hermano tenía el dulce y agrio, y mi madre tenía satay, todo bien.

This was our first time visiting whilst on holiday in the area from Scotland. We come every year to the area and only just discovered this amazing restaurant. The staff were all so lovely, attentive and friendly. The food was fresh, huge portions and delicious.

First visit, recommendation from someone on the bus journey but certainly didn't disappoint. Genuinely the best Chinese we've had. Great quality and service.

Tomó nuestro pedido y organizó cervezas para nosotros. La comida llegó y fue de primera clase, servida en placas calientes estaba sabrosa, bien presentada y sabrosa. El lugar estaba lleno cuando nos fuimos con aproximadamente el 25% de clientes orientales comiendo artículos tradicionales del menú y todos con buen aspecto complacido

As a family we visit this restaurant at least twice a month if not more since it first opened. The food is amazing every time we visit and we are currently working our way through the Chinese menu with help from the fantastic staff who are very happy to help explain things. We have never had a bad meal here ever!! Don't miss out on a fabulous feast.

Our dining experience at 食尚 Shi Shang Chinese Restaurant was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with warm hospitality and attentive service from a highly professional team. Their knowledge and recommendations enhanced our enjoyment of the meal. The authenticity of the cuisine was truly remarkable. Each dish was a flavor-packed journey that transported us to the heart of China. We were particularly impressed by the sizzling beef and fried pork with sweet sauce along with the chilli and salt chicken. The leisurely pace of the evening allowed us to savor every bite and enjoy the company without feeling rushed. We left the restaurant with full and satisfied stomachs, and a wonderful overall impression of the restaurant. Highly recommended!

Wow lovely place, amazing food, and not shy with the portions either, excellent service, helpful and attentive staff, not bad pricing considering we ordered 2 starters, 2 mains, 3 sides, and 2 drinks each all for under £45 each, yep we came out of Shi Shang restaurant in happy agony 👍

Nice restaurant that serves authentic Chinese food. Ordered cold chicken in chilli oil (saliva chicken) and braised pork belly in soy sauce. Both dishes tasted great and had a good portion size. I would go back there again.

We were staying nearby and luckily found this great Chinese restaurant. They have a great menu selection from the more traditional Chinese dishes to the more standard options we all know. The food was really good, the staff were friendly and the restaurant is large & airy. Nice ice cream based desserts too. We’ll definitely come back when we return to York.

We had chosen a set menu for two people, and found the food to be excellent. The waitresses were very friendly, and extremely attentive. The only down side was that there was a 12.5% service charge already added to our bill. We prefer to choose the amount of tip ourselves!, Would certainly recommend.

Really disappointing takeaway, one of the worst I’ve ever had!! Came quick and was hot which was good, although sign that it was just scraps heated up, which was obvious when opening. The Kung Po chicken was tiny bits of fatty chicken and more peanuts than chicken! The special fried rice was sticky and stuck together. Prawn toast and salt and pepper chicken had a horrible aftertaste (maybe the oil) and was inedible. Only edible item was the duck - which was clearly just heated up and was therefore dry, although had good flavours. Won’t be using again spent £40 on inedible food

We had salt & pepper chicken, crispy shredded sweet & chilli chicken & chicken chow mein. All were hot, fresh & tasty. Would recommend 👌🏻

Discovered this restaurant on our weekend visit. Food is delicious 😋 generous portion sizes., enjoyed it that much we returned following evening. Staff are attentive and polite. Definitely worth a visit!

After having difficulty finding the restaurant walked for almost an hour(most of it in the wrong direction) anyway once we did were not disappointed. Quick service big portions. Nice friendly staff. My hubby had king prawn and black bean sauce which he said was amazing. I had sweet and sour chicken which I struggled with due to the size of the portions but was so nice I took the remainder home.

Ordered from here once before and it was brilliant. Ordered again on a Friday night around 8.45 and the food never arrived. Really disappointing. No communication from the restaurant and cannot get in touch with them.

First time me and my husband as visited this restaurant and we felt welcome from moment we walked through the door the lovely staff is friendly and the food is beautiful

Two of us visited this Chinese restaurant last night and left very satisfied. We both opted for the set meal which in my opinion was fantastic value for money. For a Monday night it was relatively busy so as a guess it would probably worth booking if I ever plan going during a weekend. All in all really happy with our tea and most certainly will be returning in the near future. 👌

Absolutely the best Chinese we’ve ever had. Food was amazing, service brilliant, large portion sizes 10/10 from us on holiday from Manchester couldn’t find one fault, only we couldn’t eat it all. Thanks

I don’t know if we came on a day the usual chef was off or what but this was not good. The pork dumplings were more prawn than pork despite that not being mentioned on the menu. All sauces seems massively over seasoned - or dosed with industrial levels of MSG - either way we couldn’t finish any of the dishes which is not something we usually have to worry about. Can not recommend anything other than walking a bit further.

Overall is fine. The dish tastes pretty good, but the portion size is a bit too small.

Although quiet on a Saturday night they were unhurried and really helpful with a food intolerance. Really tasty from the soup to starters to large portions of mains. Attentive service but not crowded or rushed. Will be back again.

Food arrived early but not very good, crispy chicken was soggy, salt and pepper appetiser box was just a box of dry chips and animal bones with very little meat and the contents of whole box was just covered in just nasty seasoning dust

While the Chinese takeaway was edible, the chicken satay skewers were a letdown. The chicken was oddly square and uniformly cubed, with a coating that seemed straight out of a prepackaged meal. The texture was off, lacking the usual succulence and tenderness expected in satay skewers. Overall, a very disappointing experience for satay enthusiasts.

The food took very long to prepare which I didn’t mind thinking the food would come out amazing. But this is by far the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I absolutely love Chinese food but this food was terrible nothing good for me to write. I ordered the beef noodle chow mien and chicken rice chow mien. Absolutely disappointed.

Lovely afternoon meal with Dim Sum dumplings. Fantastic belly of pork the best we have had outside China Town in London. The staff were very helpful and patient as my daughter struggled to find a vegetarian option for herself that she would like. My only comment would be there was not enough vegetarian options as our daughter found it difficult to choose but eventually opted for the beancurd and black bean which was delicious.

It was good food and tasty, but not what I ordered. Ordered a salt and pepper box, got sent the shared starter. Not as substantial and had to get something else to eat.

We visited one of our favourite Chinese restaurants in the centre of York, Shishang. We had a voucher to use which they kindly gave out for Chinese New Year so we thought we’d make use of it, we also celebrated George getting a well deserved promotion in his job and he wanted a bit of a feast and was craving Chinese so that’s one way we celebrated! This was delicious but we left feeling so stuffed! The sauces were so good and moreish, but quite rich and sickly towards the end, but overall it was a solid 8/10! We got: Aromatic duck & pancakes Sweet & sour Chicken Beef with green pepper in black bean sauce Salt and pepper chips 🌟 Soft noodles We went safe with our ordering options this time as we didn’t feel daring. We know these dishes are always top tier!

overall OK, not great. Dry, overcooked, and not great value for money. £4 for 3 very small spring rolls. I don't expect to have to put food in a microwave to bring it up to temperature.Probably won't use again

We had a amazing time here, the food is to die for, the staff can’t do enough for you and nothing was a problem, I requested a dish that wasn’t on the menu and the chef cooked to suit, I’d definitely recommend this restaurant and will visit it when we are next in York.

Absolutely lovely food. Had the Beef Brisket and the Chicken Chow Mein which were both delicious. There was a slight mix up and one of the dishes was accidentally missed, but the restaurant was quick to rectify the issue and sent out the food straight away. Great service, great food, highly recommend, best Chinese in York.

Best Chinese restaurant in York I hardly write any reviews but Shi Shang is somewhere I started visiting after being blown away by their food in 2022. I bring all my friends and family here and they even insist on going back to Shi Shang for every occasion. After living in China for nearly a decade, Shi Shang is the only place that satisfies my cravings for authentic Chinese food. The dishes that I strongly recommend are as follows: Cumin Beef (孜然牛肉) is to die for! Diced string beans with mince pork (榄菜肉末四季豆) is great for mixing with rice. Stir fried wide rice noodles with beef (干炒牛河): a Cantonese classic. Stir fried beef with spring onions (葱爆牛肉): my child can finish this a whole plate with 3 bowls of rice. Sweet and sour lean pork (糖醋里脊): my new favourite. 10/10. Would recommend to anybody!

Called in without booking after trying to find somewhere to eat before an event at the Barbican and was found a table no problem, the sevice was friendly the food arrived quickly and was some of the best chinese we`ve ever eaten, we dont come to York often but if we ever do again we will be back here. Loved it, not too pricey either. Top marks from us!

Wow. Food was great and left stuffed. My son had the prawns and ate them all. Wife had the sweet and sour pork and loved it. All food that came was great. If I lived here I would definitely order pick up weekly.

Exactly what you're looking for in takeaway Chinese. Food is tasty, well seasoned, and cooked with care. I picked up directly from them, the dine-in restaurant looked nice as well. The food was piping hot and the staff friendly. Would recommend!

The quality of meat was very poor and had a certain smell to it that I’m sure someone more knowledgeable would inform me indicated old or poor quality meat. They got my order wrong too…with meat in the veggie spring rolls. Staff seemed lovely but I won’t be returning. Recommend: The Mulan, but granted it’s not in the vicinity

Normally great - but this time all the 'crispy' items like the shredded OK chicken had obviously spent too long in the deep fryer and had a nasty burnt flavour rather than what you'd expect from this establishment.

Visited this restaurant for the 2nd time this year, after it came recommended in March. Again the food was excellent, as was the service. Would definitely recommend!
