Great little pub. It's a really nice atmosphere. Often, it has local live rock bands at weekends. Haven't tried the food yet. Good value for money. Step free into pub, but a couple of steps to get up to loo. No parking.

An amazing well run pub. Full of character and history. I had the pleasure of being served by Becca. Welcoming, friendly and attentive to all customers. Landlady was lovely too. Music was excellent with talented singer Rob Davis. Best pint of Guinness in town! I'll definitely return.

Just eaten there today excellent staff and the was delicious had steak and ale pie and rump steak quality and value for money would definitely recommend

I just had a Sunday roast here, and trust me, you’ll want to arrive hungry! The portions are incredibly generous, perfect for anyone with a big appetite. There’s plenty of meat, vegetables, potatoes, and all the trimmings. The atmosphere is fantastic, with live music playing at just the right volume, you can enjoy the songs without it being too loud for a conversation. The staff are warm, welcoming, and provide excellent service, making it a great spot for a hearty meal and a relaxed, enjoyable experience!

It's a little gem in Weymouth, it's undergone a transformation, and reopened today, staff are very friendly and attentive, atmosphere is second to none

We called into this lovely place on Tuesday 18 feb) we were waiting for a bus back to charmouth and we had over an hour to wait and it was so bitterly cold and very windy -we tried to use a cafe just to get out of the weather but they were due to close -we came across the black dog quite by accident -we asked if it was ok to go in with our little dog -absolutely not a problem was the response -the man even showed to to the area to sit by the log burner -a pint for my partner and coffee for myself -nothing was to much trouble we were certainly made very very welcome thank you for that !!

I believe this is the oldest pub in town. Nice atmosphere. Great music. Jim Hammond 'rocked the place', best gig in town for weeks. Good beer and friendly staff and there really is a black dog.

We had a nice relaxing lunch. Food was good, menu a little limited but I understand. Service great, no issues at all. Atmosphere is nice in the pub, relaxing and chilled. Music was great.

Honestly this place is unbelievable. Just paid 12.95 for a Medium Sauvignon Steak and Chips. Cooked perfectly medium rare.. Spoons prices without the microwaved food and sticky carpets!

Great tradition pub in Weymouth. The Black dog special burger is fantastic. This place is well worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.

New ownership since last visited. Accept dogs. Very pleasant: friendly attentive staff; atmosphere improved, as has the beer! Food good: I had stew and husband had baked potato with prawns. Very tasty and filling. Had the Old Golden Hen Ale : well kept and correct temperature. Music good. Relaxed atmosphere. Had stopped coming here, but is now well and truly back on our list!!

Good old fashioned busy pub, dog friendly, people friendly. Bigger than you think from the outside. Pool table.

Friendly staff, reasonable drinks, amazing food!

First time visit and found pub decked out for Halloween. Had some food, had an issue with one meal which was quickly resolved and we both enjoyed our meals. Found staff very helpful and courteous they could not do enough for us.

Good traditional pub set in town centre

Came in for lunch with a large group friends, some arriving later than others, the staff were accomodating and helped sort out pushing several tables together. I can recommend the Black Dog Special Burger

Lovely friendly pub. Good beer, good barstaff, gem of a place. Didn’t have food so can’t rate it , but what i saw looked good. Proper one legged pirate band Crazy Bones was a fantastic ending to Pirate weekend. See you next year!

Had the pleasure of drinking this weekend at the pub and I have to say, it's an amazing place - so much so I got a hoodie!!. The reason for going was the pirate festival and I'm glad I was invited. The staff are great and the service is second to none. My thanks to all the staff and other poor customers that put up with the 'Mad King' as you made me feel very welcome and I hope to see you all next year aswell. This pub is a must when you visit the area and you won't be disappointed.

We haven’t got a bad word to say about the staff they were very nice and helpful.. even offering our German Shepherd biscuits.. really lovely old pub in the heart of the town.. my wife and I ordered the vegetarian options on the menu and this is where everything went downhill for this establishment.. we ordered the vegan chilli and chips.. chips were very good but the chilli wasn’t a chilli.. half a can of mixed beans in a tomato sauce with zero spice…! I ordered a vegetable pie with chips peas and gravy.. chips peas and gravy were good, but the pie was just dry overcooked pastry with I think potato inside that was like something you would pop in the microwave from Iceland.. not sure how good the rest of the menu is, but I would say just stay well clear of the vegetarian options.

Hadn't been in here for years but stopped in for a pre-dinner pint as it was nearest to the bus stop. We thought it was going to be a bit dead (early evening) and no indication from the outside to alter that anticipation but opened the door, stepped inside and wow! Buzzy atmosphere, decor made full use of the ancient building and a good pint of hazy IPA. Definitely a destination next time we're in town.

I last used the pub in 1982 when I was based at Portland in the navy. It is so much better now. Superb pub.

I like this pub when ever I visit Weymouth. Food could of been better but this is unusual my steak was well done not medium. My onion rings were in parts black. My husband pie was burnt round edges but inside was lovely. Please amend the menus if you are not serving mains at lunchtime please take it off the menu.

Staff are friendly and welcoming to both humans and dogs. The menu isn’t extensive but enough to satisfy most. The prices are reasonable, especially for such a tourist destination. We liked the character of the building and its steeped history.

Great place to relax outside with a pint. It's brilliant that half of the outside seating is non-smoking as you get smoked-out in most outdoor seating areas. Dog friendly 🐶

Just had a lovely lunch wanted something not so big and it did that, the quiche and sandwich served with salad and chips were so nice, staff were friendly and cheerful lovely to sit in a traditional pub with loads of character would highly recommended

A very nice historic pub. I really love pubs with history behind them that also look historic without looking derelict. The staff were all very friendly and the prices were very good.

In 25 years of visiting Weymouth, this was our first time having food in The Black Dog. We'd popped in for a swift drink a couple of days ago and liked the look of it so decided to come back. It's the oldest pub in Weymouth and has a fascinating, if macabre history. You can read all about it on the walls, they also have lots of pictures of Royal Navy ships, a nod to the naval history of the area. They have a typical pub menu, I had the lasagne, my wfe had chicken and bacon pie. We both announced them to be delicious. The staff were very friendly and happy to chat too. If you want cheap and cheerful, boil in the bag, go to Wetherspoons. If you want a good old fashioned British pub, with great food, go to The Black Dog.

Family friendly, nice food, nice beer, nice service.

Very friendly pub, particularly in the evening. Well priced and varied drinks. Had previously seen the mixed grill, which looked fantastic, but decided it was too much, so had the Black Dog burger. It was fabulous - possibly the best burger I’ve ever had - I genuinely cannot recommend it highly enough. BRILLIANT!!!!

Under new ownership and its really lovely now. The oldest pub in Weymouth, its steeped in history and so obviously an old pirate haunt. Food was lovely and all home cooked - no packet rubbish, very reasonable prices too. Great to see this place being run with love again.

The best place in town for an authentic timeless pub experience, the beer is fresh and flows fast thanks to the ever ready and pleasant service of the bar staff. The pub is busy but every customer is treated as an individual and never in a generic fashion. The food is served promptly, providing what you wish to choose from the ample menu provided. Would highly recommend a trip to this brilliant pub, you will never be disappointed. Many thanks to the new landlady, Lyn, and all the staff working tirelessly during a very busy weekend.

I love this pub.The staff are great, friendly and helpful. Typical pub food simple but tastes good, served fairly quickly but arrived nice and hot. Under new management I believe. I wish them the best of luck, we will be in again when we pop down to Weymouth

thanks larry! we’re really looking forward to our leaving day so we don’t have to deal with people like you and that group anymore. we were told by customers and staff that the group was rude and swearing. we don’t tolerate it. People like me? A customer that walked out because of the way your attitude was towards a group celebrating a birthday? You have major issues. no hospitality skills and absolutely NO IDEA that people are in fact paying good money to TOLERATE YOU. Hurry up and jog on

we have been coming in for many years all be it missed the last 3 years last time visited was a lively pub with good atmosphere visited Thursday for my birthday and was so surprised it's now nothing like it used to be. the staff were rude and obnoxious talking about us to other customers and generally being rude won't be coming back again we having fun yes we might have been a little load but that's just us and to charge £11.35 for to pints is extortionate they made friends we were with so uncomfortable they left before us if we hadn't already ordered our drinks we would have left with them so had to stay and drink them at that price couldn't afford to go would not recommend anyone I know to go in this pub anymore and we know a lot of people that visit weymouth at least 3/4 times a year for holidays thanks fir ruining my birthday treat from my husband and our friends first visit to you overpriced and uncomfortable atmospheric establishment

The place in itself is beautiful and full of life. With all the dietary restrictions my folks had I was worried it would be a problem but there is something for everyone there and the staff are so lovely and helpful.

Just been told they were closing at 6pm - barman was completely rude ? Strange opening hours ? I like the no children policy though !

We entered the premises today as we where waiting to be served one of my family asked if they could turn the music up just enough to be able to hear it and we were met with rude and disrespectful comments and sarcastic comments by the the young lad behind the bar. Other customers over heard the young lad and soon left along with me and my family we are not impressed with this young member of staff at all.

Went into pub as part of a birthday celebration,the barman was so rude,and didn't even smile or anything,we were all laughing and maybe a bit loud but not excessive,he rudely said that it was not that sort of pub,3 of us put our money away and left through disgust,other few drank there drinks and said they would never return, where has all the fun loving people gone 🤔 the pub is not the same

Excellent pub, we only had drinks(5 rounds for six of us) but facilities excellent. Toilets immaculate. Staff wonderful,let us move chairs around outside as a party of six, very enjoyable afternoon.

Such a great pub & really old too, steeped in history. Quite dark inside, but your eyes do adjust quickly & it’s a welcoming & comfortable place to while a few hours with friends & family. It has outdoor seating at the front of the building & this is lovely to sit & watch the world go by. It’s dog friendly inside & out.

I use to use this pub over the years when I visited Weymouth. I went in recently, I ordered a beer & sat on chair outside, with my little dog on my lap. The bloke collecting the glasses said ? We don't allow dogs on chairs. I said if I knew this I would have gone elswere. He wasn't polite. I told him stupid rule, I won't be returning. I'll go to another pub. They wasn't that friendly when I arrived at pub either.

Rude and unhelpful staff, overpriced and watered down drinks for extortionate prices. Would rather go to Wetherspoons down the road than visit this establishment again. Worst place I’ve been to during my week stay in Weymouth

Very atmospheric. Worth a visit. Suggest you do not try in the evening as its likely to be shut. No hand pulled ale on day of visit so I was a little disappointed.

Great find - working in the area and dropped in for lunch. Great service - good atmosphere and lovely food.

Absolutely awful welcoming from the bar staff, is 100% a zero star, wouldn’t recommend. Didn’t eat, wouldn’t eat, people walked in and then out, probably same greeting as we had. 🤷‍♀️ - Nice try at deflecting away from the truth, granted only 1 star reviews but they’ve all deserved in, none more than yourselves, again zero star establishment.

An historic pub not only with it's own story but a history for myself, my friends and relatives and I'm guessing many others, one of my favourite places in the world, thanks for the memories.

Came here for a swift drink. Handy location in the town centre and service was swift. Didnt eat but would have considered if a few more vegan options. Nice tables at the front on sunny days.

Perfect little gem in the bustle of tourism. We came post lunch peak (as we thought) kitchen was still busy. The staff - friendly and professional - kept us informed. The wait was less than expected and the food was lovely. I'd walk 10 mile coastal path again if it meant I could visit The Black Dog again.

Only had one lager on which cost £5.70 which probably explained why the pub hardly had any customers at 9.30pm on Easter Saturday despite having live music

Great food with a good choice of ales and they're also dog friendly. It was a quiet day when we visited, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable meal in atmospheric surroundings whilst we sheltered from the appalling weather! We're looking forward to visiting again during the summer.

No ale was very disappointing. Had to settle for Guiness. Surely the definition of a pub is somewhere that serves beer! No apology, or explanation was offered. Could do better !

Brilliant NO CHILDREN are allowed here. So do not bother trying. The reviews on here can testify to this. For me this is a bonus and the notice outside stating no kids is what made me and my partner try it. We had walked past many times and for some unknown reason, had never tried it until we spotted the sign We often leave a restaurant early due to some screaming kid, so jumped at it. Onto the experience. So what we found here was a lovely relaxing atmosphere in a wonderful old pub setting. Made extra special as it is Christmas time Only one very slight negative was they had 2 xmas trees with the extra small one covering the beautiful big log fire. They should keep to the one big one and make sure the log fire is in view. On to the food. Menu is slim but full of old style favourites, you won't find a pizza, burger, wrap or nachos here. This isn't a negative thing as it also adds to the style of this great pub. I had a steak and ale pie, partner had a cottage pie. Good homemade food. We both loved the food and I bought the chef a drink as it was that good. If you want a nice relaxing, beautifully homemade food at reasonable prices (not cheap but not outlandish). You won't beat this little find. ......To some of the previous reviewers, just go to spoons with the kids in tow. It states no kids!

We use this pub when ever we are in Weymouth and have always had a warm welcome, the drinks and food are excellent value and quality also it is dog friendly. The live music is a fantastic bonus. We recommend the Black Dog to any body who wants to sample a great traditional English pub with top class food and drink. Personally we feel the no children is a good move.
