New ownership since last visited. Accept dogs. Very pleasant: friendly attentive staff; atmosphere improved, as has the beer! Food good: I had stew and husband had baked potato with prawns. Very tasty and filling. Had the Old Golden Hen Ale : well kept and correct temperature. Music good. Relaxed atmosphere. Had stopped coming here, but is now well and truly back on our list!!

Had the pleasure of drinking this weekend at the pub and I have to say, it's an amazing place - so much so I got a hoodie!!. The reason for going was the pirate festival and I'm glad I was invited. The staff are great and the service is second to none. My thanks to all the staff and other poor customers that put up with the 'Mad King' as you made me feel very welcome and I hope to see you all next year aswell. We haven’t got a bad word to say about the staff they were very nice and helpful.. even offering our German Shepherd biscuits.. really lovely old pub in the heart of the town.. my wife and I ordered the vegetarian options on the menu and this is where everything went downhill for this establishment.. we ordered the vegan chilli and chips.. chips were very good but the chilli wasn’t a chilli.. half a can of mixed beans in a tomato sauce with zero spice…! I ordered a vegetable pie with chips peas and gravy.. chips peas and gravy were good, but the pie was just dry overcooked pastry with I think potato inside that was like something you would pop in the microwave from Iceland.. not sure how good the rest of the menu is, but I would say just stay well clear of the vegetarian options.

Hadn't been in here for years but stopped in for a pre-dinner pint as it was nearest to the bus stop. We thought it was going to be a bit dead (early evening) and no indication from the outside to alter that anticipation but opened the door, stepped inside and wow! Buzzy atmosphere, decor made full use of the ancient building and a good pint of hazy IPA. Definitely a destination next time we're in town.

In 25 years of visiting Weymouth, this was our first time having food in The Black Dog. We'd popped in for a swift drink a couple of days ago and liked the look of it so decided to come back. It's the oldest pub in Weymouth and has a fascinating, if macabre history. You can read all about it on the walls, they also have lots of pictures of Royal Navy ships, a nod to the naval history of the area. They have a typical pub menu, I had the lasagne, my wfe had chicken and bacon pie. We both announced them to be delicious. The staff were very friendly and happy to chat too. If you want cheap and cheerful, boil in the bag, go to Wetherspoons. If you want a good old fashioned British pub, with great food, go to The Black Dog.

Brilliant NO CHILDREN are allowed here. So do not bother trying. The reviews on here can testify to this. For me this is a bonus and the notice outside stating no kids is what made me and my partner try it. We had walked past many times and for some unknown reason, had never tried it until we spotted the sign We often leave a restaurant early due to some screaming kid, so jumped at it. Onto the experience. So what we found here was a lovely relaxing atmosphere in a wonderful old pub setting. Made extra special as it is Christmas time Only one very slight negative was they had 2 xmas trees with the extra small one covering the beautiful big log fire. They should keep to the one big one and make sure the log fire is in view. On to the food. Menu is slim but full of old style favourites, you won't find a pizza, burger, wrap or nachos here. This isn't a negative thing as it also adds to the style of this great pub. I had a steak and ale pie, partner had a cottage pie. Good homemade food. We both loved the food and I bought the chef a drink as it was that good. If you want a nice relaxing, beautifully homemade food at reasonable prices (not cheap but not outlandish). You won't beat this little find. ......To some of the previous reviewers, just go to spoons with the kids in tow. It states no kids!

Dropped in tonight for a drink and a bite to eat. Arrived at 1830. Perused the menu and my wife went to the gin section of the bar and ordered 2 double gin and tonics at pennies short of £20. She then asked the bar maid if she could order food (now 1837) to be told that they'd just closed the kitchen. My wife asked, I thought you took food orders up to 1900, as stated on the menu, the specials board etc, etc. "Oh we've had a rush on today and the kitchen has just caught up now, so we've closed the kitchen." She was told by said bar maid. So with 20 minutes to go and with a kitchen that have now caught up and have nothing on, you've shut up shop. There was only one person eating, a member of the bar staff, so not sure where the rush had been. I have been a frequent visitor to Weymouth due to my job for the last 38 years and have spent many days and fun (maybe a bit too raucous) evenings in the Black Dog and never left disappointed, until today. Judging by some of the other reviews something is remiss in the management of what used to be my favourite Weymouth pub, I even have a black dog (more coincidence than planning) and took her in today to show her the old place, but alas, it's not the same Black dog I remember.

EDIT: 'I mean' 🤣 your version of events is very different from mine. As predicted, your reply coincides with the service we received- rude. In regards to condiments, you'd put them on the wrong table. How did we know that condiments put on table 7 were meant for us? I had an old lady glaring at me from the moment I sat down. I didn't 'snap' at anyone. Seems like the lad who came over about my own food on the table is quite frankly, a liar. I didn't have an issue from the beginning at all? I'm not sure how you've come about that opinion. I didn't actually speak to any members of staff before the lad came over to me, so i'm confused how I'm the one who had an issue from the start? But going by all of the previous 1 star reviews and your passive aggressive replies, it doesn't surprise me that you're blaming the customer for your own bad attitude/service. As for the customers on the table next to me, I had actually been having a conversation with them before I left. It was YOU I had an issue with, and I wasn't going to thank you back for your bad attitude, although there was no look of disgust- again, another lie. Although I did hear the comment you made to another customer about me. Just so you know, you can't eat comfortably on the table I was sat at, as it's too wobbly- perhaps you can get on to fixing it. I wish you well in your waitressing career, I'm sure you'll go really far 🙂🙂 I had two bags of cakes from a bakery which I'd purchased before arriving. They were put on my table as I didn't have a bag with me. I kept being stared at by a member of staff, who then got another member of staff to approach me telling me I can't eat them at the table which I wasn't going to anyway. The staff are rude and need to put as much effort in to their customer service as they do being nosey at what's on people's tables. Food is average, nothing to write home about. Food was dumped on the table and waitress walked off. Didn't ask if we wanted sauces etc. Won't be visiting again.

My grandchildren who are 14 and 9 and very well behaved but on the other hand you my friend are not. To of been so rude to her in front of others did it make you feel like a big man being rude to a woman . Great value for money , if you pace yourself. There is a huge choice to choose from in this buffet . Nepalese , Indian , Chinese, and Thai. You have 90 minutes to eat .. which I understand and you will probably be full before then . Sensibly they will charge you extra if you waste food .. so a little and often . All in all it is good .

The sweet and sour chicken sausages (can't call them balls) were nice, but the sauce was bland. The chips were awful, dry and powdery like they'd been reheated numerous times. We were on holiday at a caravan park so had to rely on reviews.
