I went for a quick lunch. The waitresses seem to be walking about, looking at me standing there but not even offering to seat me. The Turkish man, perhaps the manager, then came and offered me a seat and menu (and appeared to tell off the waitress). Then I had to wave my hands again to get attention for ordering. The dish that I wanted to order was not available, apparently because the chef who can cook it was not around, so I had to choose something else. I asked how spicy the food might be and the waitress said that if I liked, I could have the chillies separately to which I said yes. The seafood udon arrived after a wait of 20 minutes and two reminders (I had been told that it would be there in 5 minutes). The portion size was small- I had to look inside the bowl to see if it was there! It was extremely salty and the seafood content was minimal- only two prawns, for instance! I reminded the manager that the waitress hadn't given the chillies as agreed. He then went to get it which took some time and once he arrived, he proceeded to tell me that Bangladeshis love to eat chillies. Although I politely smiled as I am not Bangladeshi and wasn't sure why this Turkish man who was running a restaurant with Turkish chefs cooking Japanese food in Islington, was telling me this story. This small bowl of noodles cost £15! I am certainly not going there again.

Waited circa 20 mins every time we ordered drinks. Table was wobbely so I asked the waiter to fix it. He swapped the table for a table even worse, when highlighted he said he was ‘too busy’. Food was just ‘ok’, there was 5 of us my rice came out so long after the food was served that my Wagu steak was cold. When we challenged the service charge a so called ‘manager’ came over quite abruptly and asked ‘why we didn’t want to pay the service charge’. I explained that we would be more than happy to pay the SC had the service been of a decent standard. After a quite assertive conversation I told him to revise the bill and we would pay.

We visited the restaurant and had a teriyaki table. The staff were friendly and polite and the food looked and tasted good. However during the night I experienced food poisoning - bad stomach cramps and vomiting, which other people have also reported on here.A quick Google search and turns out the Food Standards Agency have awarded this place a 2 star hygiene rating! No wonder I was ill. The food may have been cooked but there is cross contamination or poor food storage somewhere down the line of food prep.A real shame as it has potential to be a really good place. Also for management to potentially say I was ill because of something else I ate, I feel that is highly unlikely given your 2 star hygiene score.

Booked for Christmas 4 course menu online but when we got there, we were told they did not have the menu ingredient stocked after we ordered the drink. Interestingly, we went to the restaurant before we dined and advised that we will be having Christmas menu and our family was running 10 min late. But the manager did not mention that they did not have the menu ingredient stocked at the door. We could have left if they mentioned it. Manager agreed to give us the normal four course menu for the same price and a round of drink for free. There were only three tables filled throughout the whole night. One couple sitting next to us said they waited for an hour and the waiter spilled the beer on them, I saw the couple holding their own plate from the kitchen to their table because the service was that slow. They left after they ate starter and left and wished us good luck. Waited for more than 20 min before the first course was served. The food portion was generous and the teppanyaki chef and the waitress were nice and friendly. However, we heard the manager mentioned to the waitress about the issues of the day in front of the customers in a high volume. We also saw the manager taking a cigarette and phone call in front of the restaurant. We just think it was not an appropriate management. We were not reminded of the free round of drink throughout the whole dining time, until the bill came and it seemed we had a miscommunication earlier on, but the manager seemed passively aggressive when he explained the bill.I think the higher management of the restaurant really needs to come down to the restaurant and realise management issue they have as the issues we experienced were also mentioned by other customers on this site.

It seems as though the Manager of Sen Nin has changed during the past few months, so this review was actually requested by the current manager, Phillip.I visited Sen Nin with my partner before a gig just down at the road at Islington Assembly Hall. We had specifically looked at going there because it was listed as one of the Tastecard offers, and we both enjoy Asian cuisine. When I phoned, the lady I spoke with had told me that I could show the tastecard at the end of the meal. However, when it came to the end of the meal, we were told that it could not be processed, so that was quite disappointing (I'm certain we have been able to do this elsewhere). The food itself was tasty, but I felt that the chicken katsu curry had too much sauce. If the amount of sauce won't be reduced, it would be helpful if there was a spoon to scoop up the remainder - without having to ask for one. The drink I ordered didn't turn up until right at the end of the meal. They offered me a free Coke on the house, which was generous. There were a fair number of staff working, and the restaurant was almost empty. All in all - decent enough but a bit pricey even for London. However, I would like to commend the staff who were very attentive and chatty. I wish you all the best, and I hope my feedback will be taken into consideration.

I really was hoping not to write such a poor review. This restaurant is a short walk from my office and I have popped in a couple of times to order a Bento box from their Express lunchtime menu and I was pleased each time. Pleased enough to suggest to my work mates that we have a group lunch here and so 10 of us decided to do so...on my recommendation. The restaurant was not at all near capacity. Apart from our table there were the odd tables of 1,2 or 4 people but less than half full. Two waiting staff, a barman and 3 kitchen staff all in full view. The food was ok-good was the general view among us. Nothing to shout about but no where near poor standard. What went wrong was two of our number having had their orders forgotten and so did jot arrive until the rest of us were near finished. An extra order of a starter none of us recalls ordering arriving but, at the start of the meal at least we thought an innocent mistake so we accepted it. A fairly long time from food ordering to delivery given how un-busy the place was. The bill arriving with some items charged at prices from the full menu when we all ordered exclusively from the Express menu. So whereas no item on our tab should have been more than £5, we had some items on our tab priced £12 or so. Thankfully my eagle eyed colleagues challenged this and the bill was sent back. To be honest my two colleagues with the orders which had been forgotten - and I personally heard those orders requested- should have had reduced bills or not been charged at all. In the end we split the bill between us when it eventually arrived. It's not just what happened to us that merits this poor review. While we were there we noticed just near to us where take-away customers waited for their food that their orders were returned to them incorrect. While our bill was being endlessly debated by the two waiting staff in the doorway to the food preparation area just opposite us and tucked out of site of the main entrance the two were oblivious to three new customers who had walked in waiting patiently to find a staff member to order from or show them to a table. And do they waited...Our revised and correct bill eventually arrived. This was meant to be an office lunch hour excursion from our desks a 5 min walk away. It was now 1 hour 30 minutes. No, we did not tip.I don't like to trash in my reviews. I have been honest here. I personally felt embarrassed I'd suggested the place to my colleagues. That won't happen again.

Booked for 7pm, there were only two other tables eating at the time. One waitdress per table, they were not understaffed. Everything took time, we had to ask for table water; not eve a jug to put ourselves; we had to ash for soy sauce, not a bottle to pour when we needed, but a tiny little dish having to repeat order sos sauce was annoying. Every good Japanese restaurant has a bottle of soy sauce and wasabi paste on the table.Everything we ordered was not in stock, but why did it take 5 minutes each time for the waitress to come back to tell us, their menu isn't that extensive. You pay for monkey and get monkeys, these waitresses can't even remember what is not on today, but that's why they work in a sub standard sushi chain rather than a more known establishment. Stay well clear of this place, the atmosphere is dead, the food is crap and the service is non existent, we had to wait 15 minutes to pay; whilst the waitress was hiding in the corner on her phone. pathetic. The restaurant claims it's been around for 10 years, but with only 3 tables full on a Saturday night I don't expect it to be around much longer. Good riddance.

We booked the 5 course menu deal including unlimited Prosecco. I asked if the Tom Yum soup was spicy & was told it was not. However the soup was in fact very hot with slices of chilli floating on top. I told the waitress I could not eat it & she said she was surprised as she'd eaten it earlier & only had spring onions in it. This was clearly not true. The second course arrived before the first course & before we had even got half way through the two courses they asked if we wanted the main course. we told them to wait but after a few minutes the other 3 courses all came out at the same time so a lot of the food was cold by the time we ate it. The curry was also inedible. it was very spicy but worse, arrived with a thick skin on top. I mentioned it to the waitress but and she explained this by saying it had been waiting for us in while we ate the starters. Looked like it had been sitting there since the day before. We didn't eat any of it. We were so rushed with the food that it felt like they wanted us to hurry up even though our booking was for 7pm & there was no-one else in the restaurant. The Prosecco however was very slow to come each time. There was no atmosphere in the restaurant not just because we were the only ones but no effort made to show off teppanyaki style of cooking. It was pretty clear we did not enjoy our meal but we were given no refund or apology although we did get an extra top of of Prosecco after the time was up.

After having read the reviews on here I had mixed feelings and was in 2 minds about whether I should book or not. Had dinner and have to say I was pretty impressed about the meal. Everything was spot on, so any previous complaints let me think as to what may or may not have happened to previous diners. The meal was great and the staff was accommodating. Only issue I have is the lack of toilet paper and lack of paper hand towels in the toilets. Yes it can run out but surely staff should be aware of the fact that you should keep an eye out as to how much of both is still down there. Also the toilets need a little bit of TLC as they were a tad dirty. And the fact that no desserts were available is sad too. But all in all I'll def be back as it was such good value for money. And as the management said on a previous review in here they are much cheaper than the completion when it comes to teppanyaki

I don't know what the restaurant is like, but I have just ordered a £38 delivery from Sen Nin and it is the worst order I have made via Deliveroo. To start the supposedly "hot" chicken katsu curry was stone cold. The sushi quite clearly by the pictures did not survive the journey, and the portion sizes were minimal to say the least. For £38 I expected a lot more. There was no crab in one of the dishes, and we only received 3 gyoza in another. Really appalling and I certainly won't be ordering again. A waste of £38...

I went here for my birthday on the 27th and I booked a table for 20 at the teppanyaki grill for 7.30pm. The majority of my party ordered off the 2 courses for £16 menu. Our starters came and the tempura ad the soup was DISGUSTING to say the least. The children in our party received spring rolls with noodles and no meat. After 30 minutes of our starters being delivered, our Head Chef finally came. However, he served up the rice which tasted burnt! The Head Chef then decided it was okay for him to take the bowl of rice from four of my guests table and hold it to his nose, sniff it and put it back down and expect people to eat it. He then argued with us until the manager came and he was sent back to the kitchen (NO TEPPANYAKI). We then had to wait for our orders all over again but this time the meat came first. The chicken was cold and the steak was chewy. When the rice finally came, our whole plate of meat was cold and we refused to eat it. The manager (slim young guy) then decided to ARGUE with my guests as they said they would not be eating the food nor paying for it. Some of my guests did not even get their food for the whole night. Not only did this ruin my birthday, but, after 3 hours of siting in the restaurant we left HUNGRY and EMBARRASSED!In my conclusion, if you want your birthday ruined, want to sit in a restaurant hungry for 3 hours or want to be embarrassed in front of friends and family then here is your place to eat. I will NEVER be coming back to this restaurant or their Camden branch. Avoid if you have mobility requirements (or even if you don't) as I witnessed two people fall down the stairs leaving the restaurant whilst waiting and my Gran struggled to come up and down the stairs with her walking stick.Steph (who is actually from the Camden branch) was an amazing waitress. She was really apologetic and gave me a drink on the house.

We happened upon this restaurant during a family trip to London. Staff was friendly and helpful regarding gluten free options and they had a (limited) gf menu and gf soy sauce. Sushi menu was small by NYC standards. Restaurant specializes in hibachi type dining which is not available gf. Despite this, a pleasant dinner experience for all. "Yummy" according my the 11 yo gourmand. His 13 yo brother agreed.

Came with family for our daughter's 11th. We had the full Teppanyaki experience. Our chef was thoroughly charming (as were all the staff) and got the birthday girl up to do a spot of cooking at the hot plate, which she loved. We all loved the food too (steak, lamb, king prawns and calamari) and the birthday ice-cream and fresh fruit Teppanyaki which came as a surprise treat!

Went there with my friends on a Saturday evening for a catch up. What a great experience! Not only the food was really good - especially the wagyu beef with egg and vegetables fried rice but also the cocktails are super tasty and here's a big plus for the girl who was behind the bar that night! The staff was friendly and polite and at the end of the night we have all enjoyed the experience at Sen Nin. I would highly recommend this restaurant as it's worth the money! Big thanks for the team at Sen Nin!

Me and my family recently visited this restaurant as we were celebrating my mothers birthday and it was our first time to experience dining in a teppanyaki restaurant therefore we didn't no what to really expect but speaking on behalf of me and all my guests we throughly had an amazing time. Our chef for the evening was ''Christian'' who entertained us the whole night while he cooked each of our dishes that were delicious.I will defiantly be visiting again and look forward to bringing me friends here.

My friends wanted to try this restaurant out, had no idea about their reputation from before. Their menu looked OK, nothing special and the venue was not crowded at all. I ordered the wagyu starter which was the most expensive starter on the menu. The meat itself was OK but it was sprinkled with slices of deep-fried garlic, which wasn't nice at all. I got to try the others starters in the company, and the same thing there, everything was quite mundane. On to the main course. I chose the seafood ramen, because ramen is amazing and a dish that is always fun to try out at restaurants to experience their take on it. Well...their take was bland. The ramen base tasted nothing like seafood and seemed to me to just be some sort of beef stock and water, the noodles was very soft and cut into small strips. Tasted like instant ramen noodles. The seafood was defintely not fresh, but I thought of it as maybe being frozen seafood that had been boiled. I also ordered "Plain soba noodles" and asked for just soy sauce for dipping. Got a plate with some fried/woked noodle mess with vegetables and some sweet weird sauce, absolutely not "plain soba noodles". Oh well, a slight dissapointment but had good company and the service was nothing to complain for. Then the hell started. Came home and had this really "full" feeling in my stomach but didn't think much about it. Got to bed and had trouble sleeping. in the middle of the night, I woke up feeling ill. Since then I've hurled numerous times and had severe diarrhea. I had cold sweats and very low blood pressure (couldn't stand because of almost fainting). This lasted for 24h and while I am writing this I am still feeling woozy. I had not eaten. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Serving food that is off is something that reflects the core of the restaurant, a restaurant that has given up.

I went to this place for the first time over the weekend. The place itself looks lovely however the food wasn't consistently good, The tofu soup was not nice. The fish tacos was not bad but the sushi was bland. The service was a bit slow too. Waited around 30 mins between courses. The teppenyaki main was lovely. The salmon and sea bass with the egg fried rice was really nice and would happily eat that again but the portion was small. We got the 2 course set menu so maybe if i tried more from the menu it would have been better with the starters, It was very expensive for only really liking 1 course but the chef was very nice.

I came here with a friend of mine for lunch and a catch up on a Wednesday afternoon. We were initially attracted as it was on the Tastecard and it was 241 across the menu for us.The food was good- and for the price we paid our bellies were stuffed for a complete bargain. However we were blown away by the customer service of our waitress (although I completely forgot to get her name) who recommended that should we come back again to come on a Tuesday as it was 50% off everything! She knew the local area well, had loads of personality and was really attentive without interrupting us often. Fabulous waitress. I will be back to try and the 'saki bombs' on a Tuesday.

Teppanyaki is meant to be an experience. Skilled chefs showboating for delighted diners in the process of preparing them an excellent meal. Unfortunately Sen Nin don't even have the basics of running a restaurant right, so god forbid they try to do anything clever.Let me set the scene: one large room with three teppanyaki tables arranged in a loose circle such that three chefs should operate more or less back-to-back while serving their customers. Except where there should have been three chefs, there was a single beleaguered man moving from one table to the next, cooking meals for people who had been waiting for more than an hour. But this wasn't even the start of it: long before the chef came anywhere near us, we were ignored by any server for thirty minutes (we had to call over a waiter to place a drink order, only to have someone come back to take the same order again 10 minutes later, the first server having presumably dropped their notes in the toilet). We were asked to move seats twice, as the manager seemed more concerned with playing hungry-customer tetris than with feeding those people he had already packed in. When they eventually came, our starters (a miso and a tum yum soup) were lukewarm, and the sushi was mediocre. I have to acknowledge the stamina of the poor chef, and when he eventually worked his way around to us the mains were fine. Sufficed to say, I wanted out as quickly as possible, and asked for the bill and the card machine before we were finished eating. Walking out £100 poorer, I could only feel sorry for those people just being seated. Do yourself a favour and give this place a miss.

Maybe it was a mistake to Deliveroo this but the portions are just ridiculous. I ordered one king prawn tempura and one veg tempura and I paid £8 for 3 skinny pieces of tempura the size of my pinkie finger? Seriously? So not worth it. Very disappointed.

We spotted the sign for 'all you can eat sushi buffet' on a Sunday evening and thought it sounded great value. However, the sushi was bland, dry and tasteless and dishes were left out for the hour and a half we were there. Slathering chilli sauce on sushi rolls is not a substitute for flavour and quality. The katsu curry was tasteless and the noodles were dry and chewy. To add insult to injury, a 12.5% service charge was added to the bill despite it being self service buffet! This place was truly awful. Perhaps the teppanyaki redeems it, but avoid the sushi buffet!!

Just literally stepped out of Sen Nin. This isn't one of those authentic Japanese restaurants that I had been in. There are three things that I judge a good Japanese restaurant. 1. Soy sauce - not Kikkoman. What they use is too salty to my liking. 2. Pickled Ginger - too sour. 3. Wasabi - no "zing", no "zang." Do not be bothered if there is no glass of water by your table when you dip your sushi to the wasabi. Their wasabi is too flat. If the restaurant cannot get these three things right, 90% chances the mains wouldn't be any different. Non-existent service and exorbitant price for a small serving of miso soup at £2.95 Not a place I will recommend if you are looking for authentic Japanese cuisine. My 9 year old daughter was even unhappy when half of her maki dropped on her plate whilst she tried to bring it to her mouth. Because proper makis are firm and compact enough to be held by a gentle grip of wooden chopsticks.

We came in for dinner on a weekday before attending a concert nearby. We were very happy with the good service from all staff and the food was great. We had several small dishes and they were all very delicious and the portions are a good size. The seaweed salad was magnificent and the steamed edamame beans were the best we've ever tried. I was very pleased to see an interesting vegetarian menu (which I'll try on my next visit to Islington) and also a gluten free menu. It would be good to have more traditional desserts on the menu.

Walking down Upper St looking for a decent cheap eat, impossible I hear you say! Well on a Tuesday evening Sen Nin offers half price all night and it's worth it. We decided to do several starters as a main meal and were not disappointed, the Tom Yun soup was deliciously sour and hot, fried squid was light and crispy and not at all rubbery garnished with colourful red chillis and coriander. The veg gyoza were fresh, tasty. The chicken skewers were the main attraction and accompanied with a side of noodles went down really well. The staff were attentive and offered free refills of our green tea (fresh leaves). Dessert was not exactly as described - caramel soufflé was actually more like an ice cream, but it tasted pretty good nonetheless. I think if we had paid full price we may have wanted a little bit extra for our money, but you can't complain when it's half price.

This looked like a nice restaurant and it had a sushi buffet advertised so we decided to try it. Worst food I've had at a restaurant in a long time. Hardly any selection of sushi (salmon maki and nigiri was basically it) and it was all tiny and some of it had clearly been left out too long. Hot food was cold and it was all tasteless. For this we paid £35. Will not be going back.

Disappointed to see so many negative reviews of Sen Nin...in my opinion it is one of the best Japanese restaurants I have experienced in London. Chefs are fun and entertaining, food is cooked fresh in front of you on hot plates, sea food dishes are delicious, as are their selection of cocktails. It is pricey, however go for an early diner special 5pm-7pm :)

Sen Nin is expensive, but my Californian role was old and bone dry, the sashimi was tasteless (tuna discoloured - almost blueish). The lacklustre nigiri went straight into the bin for fear of food poisening. Never again!

Came here before a football match. The food was tasty, the presentation was 'fab' (says my son). Super value at £5 for a bento box, curry or noodles. The sharing meat platter was devoured quickly and was a lovely starter for 3 children and one adult.

On the plus side, the food is pretty cheap for what it is and we had a selection of different things from the menu, all of which were pretty nice. The staff were friendly even if they seemed a little inexperienced. On the negative, the house wine was awful, there is not a Japanese chef in the place and they are a bit too obsessive with peppers (they seemed to be in every dish in abundance). Overall, not bad for the price.

We ordered from Sen Nin on a Friday night and spent about 40 pounds for two (no drinks). We therefore expected something decent. What we got was, to say the least, very disappointing! The crispy quid and veggie gyoza were cold. Taste was ok. The sashimi and nigiri came in very small portions. Fish was badly cut, did not smell that fresh and portions were anemic for the price. Won't go again! Plenty of other nice restaurants on upper street!

I came here for my best friends birthday, we were running late by 10 minutes and we called the restaurant and the staff were very understanding. On arrival we met Alistair who throughout the whole evening was amazing, I would honestly come back to the restaurant solely on his service. However, a bonus was the food was delicious, we went for teppenyaki and our chef was very entertaining and attentive. As a surprise I asked Alistair for our dessert to have happy birthday written on it and it looked amazing. There was sparklers and he sang too which was nice for my friend who really enjoyed herself. All in all, it was an amazing experience and I would 100% recommend it!

Jiji successfully combines and modernises the best traditions of two cultures- Japanese and Mediterranean - to create an outstanding and distinctive cuisine. The food ranges from excuisite sushi to subtle tasty vegetable dishes (the cauliflower is an unlikely triumph). You could describe it as ‘fusion’, but so much lazy nonsense takes that label, and Jiji is on another level. The wines and cocktails are also superb. All of this happens in a modern Japanese take on an Art Deco dining room. (Don’t miss the monkeys in the loos - it’s all a bit White Lotus). On the basis of several visits, Jiji is hugely enjoyable and thoroughly recommended.
