CUSTOMERS TALK ABOUT DISHES WITH..beautifulcoffee

comment_iconOpinions

Unsuitable for Americans who desire value for the $. Essentials: 1: Heat We paid $309 per night for three nights in November, 2024. For this price we naturally assumed that we would have a thermostat in our room to set our desired temperature rather than have management control the heat.😢 We were never warm in our room and during the night the radiator was tepid. In order to get warm we needed to put on extra sweaters and go downstairs and sit by the fireplace in the bar; The heat in the hall adjacent to our room was always off. It reminded me of the lack of central heat in our house in Wales in the 1950’s, Boarding School in the 1960’s and a bed-sit in London in the 70’s. The British evidently don’t like change; so clear on arrival at the vintage early 1950’s Edinburgh airport. 2: Coffee Americans consider coffee as an essential for starting the day. A hotel that charges $309 a night could reasonably be expected to have a Nespresso machine or equivalent. Saorsa 1875 provided us with a one cup cafetière together with measuring cups that could hold four? We made one cup and then were puzzled at what to do with the used grounds? Were we supposed to throw the used grounds in the sink? Were we meant to put them in the garbage can? The hotel gave us no instructions. Since they had taken a $26 damage deposit, we were not inclined to experiment so made do with one cup of coffee between the two of us. 3: Breakfast We could not get breakfast until 8:00 am - way too late since we get up at 5 am. We waited patiently for a cup of coffee for three hours👍. The cappuccino, made with oat milk, was very welcome. I did like the potato dish with red pepper and zucchini. 4: Shower water pressure too low Americans expect strong water pressure in the shower. Saorsa’s offering was not up to American standards. 5: Booking and Deposits In order to make a booking at Saorsa 1875 we had to prepay for our 3 nights stay and all dinners- a staggering total of $1448.54. 😢 When we booked at the Marriott Edinburgh we had to pay no deposit😀. At “check in” Saorsa 1875 took a $26 damage deposit - a new experience for us- do Scottish people think Americans trash everything? Expectations: 1: We expect that a hotel costing $309 a night would provide bathrobes. 2: Toiletries We expect that the shampoo, conditioner and bath and shower gel should be in reach while under the shower. We had to walk away from the shower head to retrieve shampoo, bath gel and conditioner - a major inconvenience increasing the potential for falling. 3: Writing Table We would expect a writing table with note paper and a pencil or pen. 4: Phone Charging: We expect, at a bare minimum, at least two USB outlets and optimally two additional USB-C outlets. There were no USB outlets or US/UK outlets or adapters in the room. However, they did have adequate Wi-fi. 5: Elevator; We would expect an elevator in a hotel which has such a steep staircase; my wife fell on the stairs. How do disabled people reach the bedrooms? In the USA we have the ADA act which mandates standards for people with disabilities. 6: Food Soarsa 1875 offered us very limited food offerings. When we originally booked Saorsa 1875 on May 15, 2024, six months before our arrival we had prepaid $521 for five course dinners. A few weeks before we arrived, we were told that the chef had departed and so Soarsa 1875 was unable to provide dinner. Fortunately we were able to get some delicious food and cocktails at Wee Choo Choo, a new Thai restaurant in a Norwegian Railcar; They even made a special drink to celebrate my birthday. We also had two excellent meals at Fern Cottage. When we dined for the first time we suggested they should offer a Haloumi burger on the menu. When we returned the next day they had Haloumi burger on the menu - now that’s a restaurant that will do well. Conclusion: Americans demand value for money and expect hotels to upgrade their properties to current standards. The Marriott Edinburgh, near Holyrood Palace, where we stayed for three nights, makes Saorsa 1875 look shabby by comparison.

Visited here for the tasting menu dinner on Saturday night - was absolutely delicious! Very welcoming staff that invited us to sit in the bar before all the guests arrived and we were seated for dinner. 5 course tasting menu of an incredibly high standard. So tasty with very creative pairings of taste and texture. Very relaxed evening.

I’ve stayed at Saorsa several times now and each stay has been even more special than the last. A truly wonderful place, easy enough to get to but yet blissfully quiet and away from it all. The staff are always willing to go above and beyond, and are all so helpful and friendly - increasingly a rare thing… And OH the food! I am not vegan but my husband and I are both conscious of eating in an environmentally sustainable way- everything at Saorsa makes this feel seamless and easy, with seasonal, local and even foraged elements - and no UPF in sight. Vegan or not, the food is amazing and not to be missed! Not to mention their wine list and bar… The attention to detail is impeccable - I know I will be back!

Absolutely love it here! Such a wonderful cozy and welcoming environment. The hotel itself is like stepping into a castle! Lots of nature surrounding it, making it perfect for walks (the dogs will be happy). All the staff are super friendly and helpful. Enjoyed an incredible dinner. Love that it’s all vegan but even non vegans will find it delicious. The wine pairings were delightful. One of my favourite parts was grabbing a drink in the bar after finishing dinner. Such cool decor and vibe! will definitely be returning. special thank you to Nathan :)

Spent a lovely weekend here in early November this year - lovely, cosy room and overall atmosphere, beautiful setting (especially at this time of year - we had a gorgeous view of the autumnal trees!). Food and drinks were excellent. Would highly recommend!

Such a memorable, lovely experience staying at Saorsa 1875. Highly, highly recommend. Other accommodation around and about the Highlands could learn a lot from this place. Finding your USP and totally owning it. So refreshing from the usual b&b / hotel in these parts. It’s a beautiful place from the hotel itself to the staff to the food. You also don’t have to be vegan to enjoy the wonderful food and drink (I’m not!). Would defo return. Thank you.

Went to this restaurant as vegetarians looking for good tasty food. We ordered 2 small and 2 large plates. A hummus and potato stacks for the small plates and pearl barley risotto with herbs plus a mushroom pasta dish. The food was delicious and sufficient for us. We also had a bottle of wine which was unfiltered and slightly fermenting. This was not to our taste as the description did not state it was not a straightforward white wine. On arrival it was warm so we sent it back to get cooled. This was some £40 and was one of their cheapest wines. The wine list needs to be clearer about the wines and having some cheaper wines would be good

We had a delightful lunch here before a show at the theatre. We each ordered a small plate and a large plate and shared them, and then each ordered a dessert. The food was all delicious and beautifully presented and there were lots of interesting ingredients. The wine list was varied and unconventional; it contained several orange wines, for example. The building is a Victorian gem and elegantly decorated inside. The staff were charming and the service very professional. Although it was not cheap and we are not vegetarians we thought it was excellent value and we'll go back for dinner when an opportunity offers.

A small hotel that felt like a home from home. The hotel is a fascinating building set in wooded grounds. The food and drink is 100% vegan. Our evening meal was from the “small plates” menu. The ingenuity of the chef was amazing. We were blown away by the choices available, the quality of the food, the presentation and the tastes. Breakfast was wonderful too. We were impressed by all the staff. They were all “on mission”. Leo in particular took the time to explain about the local suppliers to the bar and kitchen and clearly took pride in the services delivered. Dogs are welcome too which makes it a great choice for many people.

We had the nicest time! We arrived a little early, they took our bags and were taken to our room for us without even needing to ask. We stayed in the Cosy Double room. The bed was neat and comfortable. The facilities were modern and all working. The shower pressure was lovely (The shower head in our room was adjustable), though the shower did take a minute to warm up. The provided toiletries were all incredible and very high quality! They have a display by the reception with all the toiletries they provide for sale and some more things like RSPB badges (You'll find these all over in town too), Saorsa branded shirts, vegan related shirts, we got the shampoo, conditioner, hand cream and a t-shirt. The view from our window was lovely, a small forested area, plenty of birds. You can see the trains go by in the distance through the trees too. There was a snug to sit in which is great for chatting or reading, the bar area was cosy with lots of different types of seating, books, cards, games, there is a secrets (to share) book where you can anonymously share secrets, some of them are very interesting to read. We thought the music added to the ambience, it was classy and relaxing and helped the room to feel alive and warm. We had a lunch meal there. We chose Carrot Falafel, Sweet potato cakes, oat cookies (ice cream sandwich) & banana bread. It was all incredible and very reasonably priced for the amount you get too! Service was amazing! For breakfast was a buffet with breads (toasts), jam, peanut butter, seeds, nuts, homemade granola, bran flakes, oat yoghurt, fresh fruits, homemade smoothies, juices and a cooked item which can change, one day we had homemade beans and potato hash and another we had homemade beans and mushrooms on toast. We had a 5 course dinner service. It was exquisite. The Sous chef did an excellent job, each meal was fresh and tasty and presented beautifully. The service was lovely with great conversation and knowledge. The dishes were very well thought out and the perfect portion size. It was served over roughly a 2 hour time period, by the time we had finished desert we couldn't eat another thing. We sat and spoke to our host for what felt like a couple of hours (sorry we didn't get your name! Maybe next time we will be back on a boat!). We ended up the evening in the bar area, with dim lights and a hot chocolate/wine. The hot chocolate was amazing too, made with chocolate truffles. You could help yourself to plant-based milk & chilled water from the fridge on the landing area which was great. The tea and coffee provided were very high quality and enjoyable to sip whilst looking at the world go by out of the window. I love a good cup of PG Tips, but this was way nicer! There is free wifi that is a good speed should you need it. We were lucky that we managed to get a bit of sunshine and got a bit of time to sit in the garden which was refreshing. They also have a short dog trail and plenty of little nesting spots were you can sit. The fact that everything was vegan, you didn't have to say "well I guess I can't have that" or " can you make this vegan for me?" was really nice. You could just choose what you wanted which is liberating and adds to the level of belonging in that space. This is one of those places where you don't want to leave and will find it hard to not return. For us it was the perfect balance of everything. Veganism, sustainability, professionalism, friendliness, great food & a comfy bed with modern facilities. If using the train we recommend you leave the station to the left, then take a right and use the high street, the down-hill gradient is less severe. When you leave to the right, it is more immediately in the correct direction but the hill is very steep, at a guess maybe somewhere between 10-20 degrees gradient, very difficult for wheelchair uses, people with children or those unsteady on their feet.

Overall, a beautiful stay at Soarsa. The food is really something special - we ate almost everything on the menu, as we do all over the world, veganism and travel being our passions, and you’d be hard pressed finding better food - vegan or otherwise - anywhere. It’s inventive, fresh, generous and delicious. At times, the food service suffered some from being a little under-staffed - one person trying to cover the bar and the food made for a long wait for drinks (which we didn’t get in the end) but, the server was very lovely, and told us it was the first week of a new menu trial, so likely this is just a teething problem they can correct with an additional staff member as the trial becomes smooth sailing. The rooms themselves are comfy, cosy and quite peaceful. The beds are very comfortable! A few attention to detail things could take my 4 stars to 5 - for example, someone had spilled coffee or sprayed fake tan (?) up the wall of the bathroom and it wasn’t cleaned, the shower’s body wash had a broken nozzle, and the heat pump was off meaning the water ran cold in the morning (this was quickly fixed). These are just little things to be double checked by housekeeping / management to keep the luxury feel- which they have done so well - going strong. It would also be fantastic to have facewashers provided in the linen set but perhaps that’s a personal preference. :) I’m so glad Soarsa exists. It’s fantastic to go somewhere and know everything is vegan, and the small comforts here, like cosy little cabins along the walking track and hot water bottles in the bed make this feel like a home away from home, and any way you look at it it’s fantastic value. Any small critiques I have I share only because I hope they only keep going from strength to strength to strength so we can visit more in the future! :)

Staff were absolutely lovely and the hotel is amazing HOWEVER when we went to dine for the £60 tasting menu for my birthday we were seated next to a group of really loud people who basically ruined our evening. They were asked to be quite but instead got louder as they got drunker. I eventually left as me and my friend could not hear each other speak and was made worse by the loud what felt like out of place dance/club beats music. We eventually moved to an alternative dining with two other people who also disliked the loud music but told the music was the hotels brand, not what I expected at hotel in Scottish countryside during a £60 a head meal. I didn't expect it to be a boozy place and I know you cannot control people but I feel they should have been asked to leave. It ruined my birthday. What also felt bizarre was the loudish emotional music being played at breakfast just as I was enjoying the view outside and my beautiful breakfast. Fine if it's the owners brand I respect that but it should be advertised as a slightly clubby vibe. It distracted from the amazing food and lovely kind and helpful staff. Did appreciate help with my bed by the owner though. I suppose it's personal choice but I don't drink and cannot handle boozy atmospheres.

Oh my word what a divine experience. As a vegetarian I could not wait to try here. The food was so imaginative it was beyond words. Everyone meets in the bar first for pre dinner drinks before being taken into the dining room. The staff explained each course as it was served and were so attentive, it was so good we returned 2 nights later. I was just a bit disappointed that the chef didn't put in an experience to be applauded for his/her unique food.

We had a lovely 'set lunch' at Saorsa - really delicious food that was a bit different from the norm. We particularly enjoyed the mezze sharing platter (charcoal bread was a revelation!) and the main nut roast which was accompanied by absolutely perfectly cooked vegetables with a crumble topping. Also, a big shout out to the lady who served us throughout (possibly also a manager). She was absolutely brilliant at her job - warm and welcoming.

What a wonderful hotel on a beautiful site, set in Woodlands with lots of outdoor equipment to help you relax, and access to beautiful walks eg, Black Rock Woods and waterfall. The food is totally vegan and absolutely delicious, in the form of a tasting menu, seasonal, very varied and using local suppliers as much as possible. Beautifully prepared and presented. The furnishings are comfortable, stylish and elegant. The hotels' dogs Lizzie, Izzie and Whisky are charming and well behaved and very appreciative of balls being thrown for them. This hotel offers excellent value for money -a holiday worth saving up for!

We had a lovely time and enjoyed the food. It's a set tasting menu so you don't get any choice about what you eat but we were willing to accept that. On this occasion they explained that all dishes were gluten free to accommodate the requirements of one of the guests. Everything is clearly carefully chosen and laid out beautifully. The room was really pleasant as well, a beautiful fireplace, lovely flooring, wooden window sashes and everything you could wish for. The waiting staff were very professional. It's pricey of course but well worth doing for a treat or special occasion.

I booked a table for 2 in the restaurant months before our visit and was greatly looking forward to it. A few weeks passed and I received an automated email ‘reservation cancellation’, which was confirming my cancellation. HOLD ON, I haven’t cancelled anything! About an hour later I get an email from a member of staff stating that the restaurant has been fully booked out due to an exclusive event and that they had to cancel my reservation. I was only in Pitlochry for a few days and was looking forward to trying Saorsa 1875 but the place was booked out the whole weekend due to this event which was clearly booked in after myself. I still find it crazy that I booked a table well in advance and they had the cheek to cancel my reservation before even letting me know or offering me any other day. Just shows that individuals mean nothing. Poor show.

When we arrived, it turned out that something had gone wrong with the dinner reservation we made online and the dining hall was full. However, the staff were very friendly and set us up with a table in the bar lounge and a complimentary bottle of Prosecco. The food was delicious: we thoroughly enjoyed the five-course dinner menu. Each course was different and unique. The service was great, too. Would recommend for a great vegan dinner, but it’s probably best to make a reservation over the phone, rather than on their website.
