Sanjunana in Merton

New Bulgarian has replaced Sanjunana. Food is superb. Looks like this one is going to be successful.

This restaurant had been recommended to me. So I went around 5.30 on a Sunday. I was the first person there. A youngish woman with rainbow coloured hair was the only person visible. She handed me a menu without a word and certainly no greeting. I ordered wine and miso soup for a start. The miso was tasteless and had no tofu or wakame...just a bit of something which looked like a shard of greasy egg scraped off a stove top. After trying to get the attention of the woman for about 7 minutes, I eventually spied some (rather grubby) pots of what I correctly guessed as soya sauce, walked across the restaurant and collected one. She watched me doing this, but again, no comment or interest. I then ordered salmon sashimi and prawn gyoza, requesting the sashimi be served first. I had both dishes plonked on my table, and when I mentioned my request, again the silent treatment....though I did get a glare. The sashimi was warm and grainy and didn't taste very fresh....is came in a soup or noodle bowl. I wasn't given a dipping bowl for soya and attempts to catch the woman's attention failed, despite now another influx of two customers! So eventually I just poured soya in the soup bowl! The gyoza, described as 'fired' was almost burnt on one side and the rest was opaque and clearly hadn't even been turned in the pan. The 'dipping sauce' was like watery fish sauce with no other taste. I did manage to get sufficient attention to request some fresh chilli and guess I should count myself lucky to have a small dish of sweet chili sauce dumped on my table. I decided against ordering anything more and asked for the bill. I then expressed my disappointment at the service, the lack of communication and the food. This was met with silence, so I reluctantly requested the service charge be removed. This was done and my payment taken in silence. I left without being greeted and felt happy to escape such a dire situation. I normally give restaurants a few tries, but given the absolute indifference here, I won't both.

I ordered from the restaurant as a treat for my wife who had given birth the day before. They didn’t deliver half of the order and when I phoned they wouldn’t send out the order and wouldn’t give me a refund.

This was decent basic Japanese food and a nice but unremarkable meal. Had a spontaneous dinner on a Saturday night. Service was very friendly. Food was fine - the fish was good and fresh (limited to the typical Anglo-style Japanese so focusing salmon, tuna, a generic white fish and prawn) as we had some nigiri and sashimi to start and I had the chirashi don for mains. The chicken katsu curry was a generous portion and looked good - my dining companion reported good things. However, the let down, and why this is getting 3 stars not 4, is that the omelette with the sashimi was not really a proper Japanese omelette (should be sweet and fluffy, containing mirin and other good stuff), it was more of a flat, savoury western-style omelette sliced into pieces which made me question what was going on in the kitchen.

Fantastic local restaurant- great food and friendly service. Visited this place a number of times and have ordered take away - always been good. The waitress is super friendly and gives excellent service. Would highly recommend!

What a great find! Not knowing the area, we just searched for 'Japanese Restaurant' and thought Sanjunana fitted the bill, and indeed it did. Simple, relaxed, modern interior. The big windows meant that there was plenty of light. Menu not super long, but you should be able to find something to suit all. Think it would suit both a casual meal and a special occasion. We had a salmon sashimi, salmon nigiri, wakame salad, 2 soft drinks, crispy prawn poke bowl, and a wakame (we loved the wakame) poke bowl. Came to just under £45 inc service charge, which is pretty good considering the quality. Special mention to the 3 big fat crispy prawns in the poke bowl. The poke bowls were great. Full of colour, texture and flavours. Really sad we didn't take any pictures. Service was friendly, polite and unobtrusive. Would love to go back if I'm in the area.

Always good food, never disappoint! Lovely service too even if it was just over the phone! Ordered a Katsu bento and forgot to add the curry - called up and they added this for me :) . Desserts are lovely tooo!

Amazing food, good atmosphere and excellent service. We had a family dinner here and had the fried octopus balls as starter and the chicken katsu and sushi as mains. Everything was excellent and the staff was helpful and polite.

This restaurant IS open for dine-in not just takeaway/delivery!! Just thought I'd start with that as the status wasn't up to date at time of writing.. Anyway the food here is great - we had some amazing sushi & sashimi and a couple of the hot options. The Poke is also delicious, all the food is beautifully presented, the restaurant is tastefully decorated and I couldn't fault the service at all. Wish there were more places like this around - I'll definitely be back to try more from the menu!

Welcoming staff and excellent food.Thed starters were very good with a range of approximately 20 different dishes. Wide range of Sushi dishes and the ones we picked were perfect. Draft Ashari lager availble as well as bottled beers and lagers. The house wine was good and at a very reasonable (cheap) for a restaurant. We have been here some 8 times since it opened last summer and the owner who lives locally is a very nice and polite young man.

I used to live nearby. After a 3 year gap living nearby again now. I'd always thought the options were a little limited around here so I'm really happy that this sort of restaurant is in the area. Pleasing, simple decor. Nice house wine. And most importantly high quality food. Very happy with everything.

We tried the Merton Hall rolls and the Ocean set. Both were really fresh and tasty and the new chef had definitely upped the ante with his vegetable carving! Service is always excellent here and the warm saki was very welcome on a chilly night. Highly recommend Nd this restaurant for food, tea, service and ambience .

I dropped in here for lunch and had the Katsu bento; Decent chicken Katsu, good cucumber maki, ok 2 pieces sushi, rice etc It was good, but nothing special. Having said that, almost certainly the best place to eat locally. The service is good and the premises clean and pleasant.

5th visit - Relaxed, friendly modern Japanese restaurant serving SW19/20. The only local Japanese option now for Wimbledon area - open 7 days . Parking is the only downside . Quality of sushi fish and chef skill goes beyond reasonable price point. Highly recommend Spicy Tuna Uramaki and Prawn Gyoza .The Katsu Curry main dishes are cooked to perfection and flavours authentic . Deliveroo delivery menu is also recommended , perfect for working from home days !

The worst chicken katsu curry I ever had the misfortune to taste. Horrible greasy skin left on the chicken un the breadcrumb. Was absolutely revolting to try and eat.

We went on a Monday evening and travelled across London to try it out. It was definitely worth the trek - incredibly delicious, fresh food, and lovely warm atmosphere. The hosts made us feel very welcome. Perfect for date night!
