This place is a right rip off! £12 for a very small bit of cod, mostly batter..very very greasy in fact dripping, and the chips were very undercooked! Fuming!

Never going to buy from there again- Ordered a Large cod which I got medium- Large chips which they placed with the cod( so turned out to be a small portion of chips and a pie which was tiny I could eat in 2 mouth fulls total cost including deliver was just under £29 pounds - you should be ashamed off yourselves

Update to review below- I go here every few weeks when I'm working in the area. Something has gone badly wrong during my last few visits. The pies are microwaved, the peas are half boiling hot/half stone cold (obviously microwaved) and the chips are soggy. One bad experience I can overlook, but the last 3 have been bad so I'm going to go elsewhere until reviews improve ‐----‐------------ Previous review The fish and batter were perfect. The chips were very good (especially as its the summer). The part which let the meal down was the curry sauce - it was a terrible watered down Chinese curry, not a traditional "yellow with bits" which you associate with a fish and chip shop. I don't want to make a review about this, but peas and curry are part of the meal- get these right and you will be a top 10 fish and chip shop

Lived in Whyteleafe for years . This place has gone down hill. The focus is on delivery customers and not those calling in . Chips were very poor and cod soggy and not very appetising. Won’t be returning any time soon .

I'm tired of wasting good money on rubbish food. Luckily I only went for a portion of chips @ £3.20 I didn't fancy wasting £2.50 on a budget sausage. The chips were stale, god knows how long they were sitting there for before I walked in. If you can't even get chips right as a fish and chip shop that's worrying

We never go anywhere else for our fish and chips. The food is lovely quality and most of the time freshly cooked. Yes you do wait but to me that’s a good sign that so many people use it and I allow for that extra time. Manager always remembers us and will have a chat. We will always use here

Put it this way, you won't be hungry afterwards, or disappointed.

First time ordering from there very expressive and the portion was so small my 4 year old daughter finished a large. The size of the fish was terrible

Beautiful fish, and chips are not greasy like some chippys.. waiting time Is a little longer than expected, and they seem to concentrate more on outside orders for just eat etc., but worth the wait.

Sorry to give a 2* rating but I ordered 2 pieces of chicken and chips at lunchtime just before closing. The chicken looked dry and overdone and it had possibly been in the hot cupboard for some time. The taste confirmed this - very disappointed especially when it is £5 for 2 pieces! I wanted to keep it local but sadly the quality just let you down . Sorry :(

The best fish and chip shop in the local area. Genuinely just had the best gluten free haddock and chips in my entire life. Could not recommend highly enough.

Long queue, not crispy batter, chips not crisp,need updating

Enjoy my fish and chips last night with some amazing hand made tartare sauce. The tartare sauce was the highlight of my evening it really lifted the dish with a amazing natural salty finish. They must have a secret ingredient they're not telling us about.

Waited 20 minutes for a burger chips and a battered sausage as the incompetent teenage staff gave the last sausage to customers that came in afterwards then laughed about the mistake. No apology, won’t be back

Never been disappointed with Salisbury’s before but just paid for a large portion of chips for the family and it was literally less than half the size I bought 2 weeks ago and many times before. Only realised when I got them home. Everything else was great as always.

Great food here and not too badly priced but who wants to wait 20 minutes for a couple of portions of chips when only one other person in shop. No urgency at all. 08/03 - Thought I'd give it another chance on a snowy day so kids at home could have a treat. Ordered through Uber but never received. Apparently driver couldn't see medium sized house sign or ring me (no missed calls). Now none of this is Salisbury's fault, but when I rang there was no apology or attempt to help to get food. Just its nothing to do with us. Well it is because it puts customers off. I will now use another shop. And if the service is this bad don't use Uber !!

Food is always brilliant quality but will never order via JustEat ever again… my £17 order turned out to be £22.49 That’s £4.99 for delivery and 50p service charge… totally ridiculous… never again.

Salisburys are great, food is fantastic and coocked fresh. My daughter is also ceoliac and cannot eat Gluten and the guys at Salisburys make a special Gluten free batter for her fish, which she loves. Thank you again guys.

Went during lunch and they had a deal where if you buy a fish you get the chips for free on Wednesday and Friday during lunch. I went into the shop which was quite busy and saw everyone just being charged for the cod and not the chips but for some reason I had to pay for the chips. I've question this and they just said what my total amount was. I just paid and just not coming back ever again. Worse customer service and avoid

Had a order of fish and chips over deliveroo for collection The cod was lovely but the prices are very different in the store u could get for 8.40 with chips and I've paid 13 pounds just for a cod without chips and drive down to collect it and I'm personally from hospitality background I wouldnt mind add the chips as first time customers after seeing what he paid for and seeing another customer get it for 5 pound less... unfurtunally I won't be back not great service

Fish nice and fresh, plenty of chips in one portion and the young person serving was efficient. Lovely clean premises and plenty of choice.

Good quality fish and a decent portion size of chips, was shocked at the price at just over 10 pounds but when you come to think of the world we are living in currently I guess it's to be expected! Will defo be back here again at some point as the guy behind the counter was very friendly.

Nice chips and good young servers who have manners

Very disappointing. Paid for large cod and chips and when I got home I realized it was a regular portion. It wasn't freshly cooked either. In the shop the person at the counter forgot my order and didn't seem like they knew what they were doing. Their colleague on the counter was visibly frustrated by this. All together it didn't seem like a very well run operation tonight. Have used them previously and have not had any problems but after this I will not be returning again.

The place where the products are made is clean, the fish and chips are of reasonable quality, just with excess oil.

Ordered skate on Jan 14th and received three skate and chips. The skate was excellent with nice thin crispy batter, However ordered skate yesterday Jan 20th and was extremely disappointed as the fish was stuck to the very thick brown batter and very dry. This has happened before on a Thursday order, do you have a different cook on these days? Also received a small piece of cod.

I use the shop frequently. Top quality fish and chips every time. Very clean premises, most obliging staff.

Too much oil transferred from pan to bag. Need to shake and tap the scoop to get it back in the Fryer. The cod and haddock weren't marked but both tasted similar so it could have been two pieces of the same fish. The server didn't know either.

Definitely my go-to place! Staff are always really friendly and the portions are wonderful! Best sausage and chips I know - thank you!

There was a long wait to even be acknowledged... 19 minutes at least in total It was busy with only 2 staff members and deliveroo / Uber eats / just eats orders occupying almost all of the time of the staff members. New orders coming through were prioritised over customers waiting on store, so we'd be pushed further down the queue. The customer facing staff member could only be described as hating her life. She looked like she absolutely hated her job. No smile. Ignoring everyone in the shop. Customer service is not her calling maybe. There was a man who was in the store at the front of the queue when I entered, who walked out of the store after 15 minutes. The Manager came back from somewhere, his staff member joked "did you get lost?", Implying he'd gone for longer than expected leaving them shorter staffed. Once he was back, nothing improved. He had a little chat with a customer who he recognised, but other than that, no eye contact still with anyone else. I asked to speak to the manager quietly to the side once I'd reached the front. I didn't want to make a fuss, just let him know that I was put out by the lack of care and attention and then make my order. I started off with "I just wanted to give some feedback. I completely get that you're busy and you're short staffed, so the wait times are longer. However, I've waited 19 minutes, and no one has even made eye contact with me...". The manager cut me short and said "well we're busy". I asked "how busy are you that you can't look at people in a shop and give them a smile at any point over 19 minutes?" He interrupted me again "You can see yourself we're busy". I asked him "So you're saying that I am stupid then?" He stuttered "no, just it's busy..." At this point I told him "Listen, I just wanted to give some feedback quietly without a fuss, and make an order, but you clearly aren't interested in hearing me out..." He interrupted me again "well obviously I'm sorry for the wait, did you want to make an order?" At this point, I couldn't justify spending money here. "No thanks, don't worry about it". "Ok, cya" was his nonchalant response. I went to Manns up the road on Hamsey Green instead. With the long wait and grumpy looking young staff member, I probably would have given 3-4 stars if I had left a review. With the owners extremely poor handling of a complaint made by someone who was willing to spend money with them (and has done so many times in the past), it's 1 star and I will NEVER use them again. They are popular and busy, so I doubt that they'll miss my business, but I won't miss their customer service.

Open till 10pm, ordered chips at around 9.30 to be given Luke warm small portion of chips for £2.40 very disappointing and not up to usual standard. Telling customers behind us no chips left and that was very much We were given leftovers

Was hoping for fish n chips this evening, had a lovely day out and after getting off the train decided to get fish and chips on our way home. After waiting outside for half an hour, I eventua lly got to the counter to be told that they didn't have what fish I had asked for and was tol 'that was the way it is'! I have used Salisburys for over 25 years but it seems that if you haven't ordered via Just Eat or what ever other delivery site there is you don't count just standing waiting! Face to face customers don't seem important. We wont be going again.

We ordered a small cod, large haddock, chips and sausage. Despite the haddock being large, it very small and had less fish in it than the small cod. They were both put in the fryer at the same time and cooked together, as such the haddock was very over cooked, dry and the batter far to crunchy. Chips were great though!

The food here is great, I used to come here every week but since re opening they have real issues with dealing with demand. It is very unorganised and causes huge wait times whilst standing in the cold. Really could do with some organisation and if you order on the phone you still have to wait. It’s a shame cause the food is lovely

We had co and chips tonight 13th March 2021 Fish really fresh and hot, servings very good and the service was Excellent, will be using them again..

Have been coming here for 30 years, but of late the service has deteriorated badly - the food hasn’t (still superb) but it took 50 minutes to get my dinner last night, queued outside in the cold for 20, then had to wait 30 minutes for what I wanted to be cooked as the items I wanted were hoovered up by the internet orders. It seems walk-in customers are definitely at the back of the queue! The final insult last night was the bag was overpacked and the curry sauce burst inside, losing the sauce and making a mess including the car mat! I understand the increase in internet ordering, but it is going to drive long time loyal customers away with the ignorance and excessive wait - I will think twice now before coming down and that is a terrible shame

This fish & chip shop is the most disorganised I have ever come across. The food is great quality and the staff are polite, BUT and it’s a big problem. And it’s a BIG BUT! You wait forever ever. When I first when back there recently I had to wait 20 minutes before I able to walk out with my food. I could see people had made telephone orders. So next time I made a telephone order. And the next time I went, as you probably guessed I waited 20 minutes. Today I rang my order through the telephone. I was told it would be ready at 7pm. Turned up at 7.pm and I wasn’t even spoken to until 7.20pm. A young lady who was behind me was given her order before me. I wasn’t able to walk out of the shop with my order until 7.27pm. During that time over 4 internet delivery orders where done before me collected by motorcyclist. Considering there is 6 staff in the shop only one person seems to have a dedicated job out in the back of the shop. The rest of the staff are in chaos. Moving between taking orders from the telephone, orders from the internet and 20% of the time attending to the people in the premises. At one point there where three staff talking about one order. Instead of having two people dedicated to the people in the shop, two doing the internet/ telephone orders and two doing the cooking. It would also be considerate if there where different parts of the counter dedicated to the different customers with signs to show us the customer who to talk to. Considering how good the food is and the pleasant service from the staff, it’s a big disappointment in the way there customers are treated. The proprietor needs to look up and see the frustration, confusion and annoyance his clients are experiencing. After watching customers exchanging words accusing of not being served in turn (his has happened on the last three occasions I have visited) I have finally have had enough. Considering I have been visiting this fish and chip shop on & off for 30 years, l will have to find somewhere else.

More care was given to all the orders that you had in your queue than the people Who had made the effort to travel to your shop and we're standing in the freezing cold outside your door. Finally served, it was by a girl who didn't have her mask over her nose. Just these two things alone have put me off from coming back again. Not impressed with £2:40 for chips either!

Perfect fish (always to order) and chips

Food was soaking wet in the paper, fish fell apart and stuck to the paper. Everything was just awful. We weren't given the pies we ordered. Wont be coming again and will be warning people that it's so bad!

Just had my first outing after being in lockdown for 6 weeks. We were driving to do a empty site visit to take photos. We were so pleased to see Salisbury’s fish and chips open. What a fabulous place. Spotlessly clean. A safety Perspex barrier between the servers and the customer. The owner wore a mask and disinfected everything that he was touching. I waited 6 minutes while he cooked our large cod from fresh. He was very friendly and had been shut for over 5 weeks and only opened Thursday. The fish and chips were absolutely delicious. I felt everything was hygienic and safe. These small businesses need us to get back out there and use them. I will certainly be back if I’m passing.

Large cod was not large it was the size of a small cod, gerkins were not nice, food was ok, but I usually love fish and chips, and go to different places to buy, I will not buy it from here again as it was extremely basic. The only good thing was the batter on the fish.

Waited an eternity for yes a large order when our relatives came to visit back in October 2019, size of portions for the price i paid which was over £65!! Was criminal, thick stodgy batter poorly filleted fish and chips were average. Poor parking, rude female staff topped it off. Steer clear if you have any sense.

Expensive, long lines and never seem to have anything ready within 20 minutes!! Take ‘mates’ orders first even though they’re at the back of the line. Food is average.

Nice chicken and burgers, never have any left though. Not well organised so never make any more ready for 25 minutes and always understaffed so long lines!

If you are in the area, this is a decent chippy. It has the usual range of offerings and does a brisk trade. Nothing out of the ordinary but OK.
