Sabor Criollo in Edinburgh, City of

The food is decent, but quite bland: little flavour and literally no spices. We had the beef enchilada and the pabellon margariteno (a fish dish), and were quite disappointed. We also had a tres leches as dessert, which was not good at all. This place is also on the pricey side, considering the kind of food they serve.

This place was SO YUMMY!! As Americans visiting Edinburgh we were craving mexican food. This place satisfied our craving while still being very different than a standard American Mexican joint. The food was DELICIOUS and the service was great! 10/10!

We stumbled upon this place and it did not disappoint! The food was incredible, very authentic and the margaritas were the best ive ever had! I wish I'd taken some photos but before I could remember, I had eaten everything it was so moreish! Highly recommend anyone to visit - you will not regret it!

Unpretentious family run basement venue - every dish a winner - excellent service , no lengthy descriptions or bugging during the courses - reasonable cost for food and drink , a pitcher of margarita is about £25 ! - nice atmosphere -

An amazing little place, we snuck in at opening at 17:00, because this place was booked to the brim for the evening… It's very easy to tell why. Delicious food; fantastic, kind and proactive staff; and lovely and loved in atmosphere.

As American ex-pats, one of the things my kids miss most is being able to find good Mexican food in Europe. So we were excited to find Sabor Criollo, which is a bit off the beaten path in Edinburgh, but was a nice option with both Mexican and Venezuelan dishes, with good vegetarian options. My wife and I each enjoyed an arepa, and the kids ended up getting three orders of nachos and a quesadilla. Even if it wasn't the best Mexican food we've ever had, it was certainly an enjoyable meal for a reasonable price.

A small restaurant but full of locals which is a good sign. Ordered a mixture of dishes which arrived quickly. Staff very attentive and the quality very good. Nice warm atmosphere on a cold night. Enchiladas and fajitas for main course which were both very flavourful and good size Basic selection of wine but not a real issue Staff very friendly

Good fresh tasty food , friendly staff/service and great value

Visited this restaurant at the weekend, having not been in it in over 10 years. Glad to say that the food is still fantastic. The nachos starter was delish, as was the quesadillas and enchiladas main course. The decor creates an authentic welcoming atmosphere and we were served by the owner himself, due to us booking an early slot. My only criticism would be that they need an A board or sign of some sort up on the street to encourage passing trade as the place is quite easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there. We will definitely be returning again in the near future.

Cheerful and bright atmosphere but several mistakes made with food orders. Server notified of mushroom allergy yet Quesadillas had to be sent back as they contained mushrooms. An incorrect fish dish was served and when raised with waiting staff, the server disputed this. Overall, food was average and service slow with dishes being brought out individually meaning some people had to wait for 5-10 minutes whilst others were eating. More organisation and checking orders to avoid confusion would go along way!

Tiny but the food is so good, it’s really worth booking rather than stopping by on spec - the quesadilla supreme was delicious and the fried yucca made a very pleasant and unusual starter!

Popped in for a very quick late lunch when everywhere else was closed. We were the only two there. Our burritos and tacos were delicious. Extensive menu of Mexican and Venezuelan dishes. Cocktails served. Looked like a potentially lively place for the evening but I can't comment because I was there late afternoon.

Arepa’s were decent, only had two slices of plantains, a little pricey for the amount of filling. Service was friendly. We walked in without a booking, but bookings seem to be preferred.

The food is amazing and the staff even better. I really don't get the fact that if someone isn't happy with their food, don't notify that to the staff and I'm pretty sure that they will fix it then. But noooo, is better to come to social media to badmounthed them.

The food was extremely disappointing, which was such a surprise when so many of the reviews are so positive. It seemed pretty obvious to us that the dishes we had were heated from frozen. The £17.50 Gambas Pil Pil was frozen prawns in a simple sauce with spicy rice. If the rice wasn't microwave in a bag it was a good imitation. The beef chili in the enchiladas was cold, while the plate was steaming hot after being nuked in the microwave. The tequenos and croquetas tasted from frozen too. The stand out disappointment was the guacamole, £2.50 for two tablespoons of squeezy supermarket guac. For a garnish that is so easy to make delicious it was just awful. Our server was lovely, but was completely over-stretched meaning we got very little attention. It really was a shame. Cocktails were well priced, and okay. I wonder if the head chef recently decided that cooking from fresh just wasn't worth it financially. Or perhaps we were just very unlucky in our choices! I wish I could say otherwise, but I absolutely would not recommend Sabor Criollo.

Very tasty food, had the chicken croquettes and pulled beef arepa which both tasted great. Nice atmosphere. Prices a bit high for the size of the portion but the tastes are great!

Small and very nice place with delicious food from Mexico all the way down to Venezuela. A favorite place in Stockbridge also with a gluten free and dairy free offering. Try the rice with beans and beef or the quesedillas.

Great place to try authentic South American cuisine. Very tasty dishes perfectly executed, and fried food was crispy and not dripping with oil. Fantastic beef & cheese filling in the empanadas, and a good wine selection to accompany. Very polite service, and overall meal was excellent. We'll definitely be back when in the area.

What a great find! Walked by this place and went in to eat, what a great decision! Such lovely people, great atmosphere and the food was soooo good!!! Even our baby loved her special Quesadilla! We will be back soon!

Stopped off here for some dinner after a wander round the Botanic Gardens. This must be the 6th or 7th time I've eaten here. The food is fantastic and reasonably priced. Excellent service and relaxed atmosphere. I must come back again soon and try something else from the menu.

First time visiting there on my birthday with my cousin. Excellent 3 main courses. Had delicious cheese fingers wrapped pastries. Enchiladas with grilled vegetables and cream caramel for dessert. Friendly staff, cosy small place, nice decor and good value.

The best I can say is the food wasn't actively bad, but neither was it good. We wanted some suggestions for shared plates so we could try a range of things, the waiter just said, "You haven't decided, I'll come back". The unforgivable was the jug of margaritas, if that was served in south America your body would be found in a shallow grave and your family would disappear. Not even the four shots if tequila we ordered could resurrect it. Loads of crushed ice floating around to block your mouth so you couldn't sip it and no doubt for filling its true function of bulking it out. Let me be clear, margaritas are tequila, Cointreau or similar and fresh lime juice, strained over ice; in a jug some large cubes would be acceptable. It is simple and delicious, the restaurant owner should try one sometime.

As a Venezuelan I cannot recommend this place enough: food and service was exceptional. I had the mini cachapa with pabellón margariteño and finished the night with a delicious tres leches. Took some tequeños for home as well, what a treat! Thanks for the excellent service!

This is an amazing Spanish restaurant in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. The food is out of this world and the staff are fantastic. It has a very friendly atmosphere. The cocktails are delicious. I can highly recommend the Pina Colada’s. Had two but could quite easily have had a pitcher to myself. Well worth the money and a visit if you can get a table. You really need to book.

I went for a group birthday and there wasn't a single speck of food left on anyone's plate. The menu is extensive with more than you can choose from, and everything was delicious. The cocktails were also fantastic. Seems to be a family run business and all the staff were incredibly friendly which makes it all the more tempting to return!

We were on a trip to Edinburgh for a few days. Sabor Criollo was just round the corner from our flat and was a fantastic hidden gem. The food was fabulous for the whole family (our kids loved it), the service was really friendly and the atmosphere was full of fun. Highly recommended.

We loved our meal this evening. The pabellón arepas were delicious and my husband loved his fajitas. The piña coladas were great and reasonably priced.

We ate here last night as recommended by my sister. So glad we did as it was absolutely brilliant. We showed up half an hour early for our booking (as I clearly can’t read my own calendar!) and luckily were accommodated right away. Fantastic yucca fritta for starters and delicious quesadilla and tostadas. The mojitos were also very moreish! Tres leche for dessert finished it off nicely. Thank you to the wonderful staff, Zivar especially, for their friendly and warm service. Couldn’t fault it and we will be back.

Desafortunadamente, aparte del desinfectante disponible, no se cumplió con las pautas. No se pidió a los clientes que lo usaran y no vi a ningún personal usarlo. No hay detalles de seguimiento y rastreo tomados de "walk ins". No se estaba reproduciendo música ni personal que llevara ropa para la cara.A pesar de la calidad de la comida, no volveré hasta que termine la pandemia y cambien las prácticas.

Came to sabor criollo during the eat out to help out scheme and it was great:) fresh and sizzling hot fajitas were excellent. Although there was only one waiter on and was pretty busy he still kept it going with polite and attentive service

Really nice place. Great margaritas and daiquiris. Good handcrafted, homemade food. Small, so service is very personal. Service was a little bit slow but the friendly staff and homemade quality food made up for it.

Walked in on a busy Saturday evening and got lucky to get a table after a wee while. Service was great (thanks to Zeevar for taking care of us) and food super tasty! We're definitely going to be back!!

Was our daughter’s choice and certainly a good one. Our visit was on a Tuesday night so was relatively quiet. Food was excellent, portions a good size and was good value for money.

Had been recommended this place by a friend and didnt disappoint. Good range and great value, local and independent south american restaurant. Everything we ate was great and its cute location hidden away was a cool bonus in the july heat.

This place is hidden away in a basement and we almost missed it, but are glad we took the chance. Never experienced Venezuelan food before, so can't speak to the authenticity, but lots of interesting flavours and choices. Not a huge menu, but enough for both carnivores and vegetarians to find something. Only slight issue was that we felt portion sizes were a little on the small side, especially mains, for the price.

Don't be fooled by the appearance of this place. It's in a basement and looks like a slightly dated cafe. However, the food was outstanding and not at all expensive. Recommended.

¡Es lo que es! Este lugar no es lujoso y no pretende serlo. Es pequeño y atmosférico y se llena rápido. La comida es muy buena, no es un gran menú, pero eso deja mucho tiempo para buenos platos. El servicio fue lento, pero no nos importó en absoluto ya que estábamos bastante cómodos sentados con nuestras bebidas esperando. Sin embargo, la espera valió la pena. La mujer que nos servía era una anfitriona perfecta y atenta, ¡aunque estaba ocupada! Vale la pena una visita y definitivamente volverá a aparecer en el pasado la próxima vez.

Finding good-quality Venezuelan cuisine can prove rather challenging in the fair city of Edinburgh. However, Sabor Criollo far exceeded my expectations in every way: authentic, tasty, good service. 10/10 would recommend.

What a great cozy authentic Latin American restaurant. Staff are friendly, the food delicious and drinks fantastic. The arepas are out of this world, best I've ever had! Chicken mayo with avo was delicious. Great side of yucca and the margerita was divine. Can't wait to come back when we visit Edinburgh again!

Food was outstanding! Service was great and attentive. The only thing which keeps me from giving a rating of 5 is that we were over charged by £30. It was all easily taken care of but still. The portion sizes were small, but coming from an American standard, that's to be expected. Lovely restaurant and great atmosphere!

Un grupo grande de nosotros reservamos una mesa para celebrar un cumpleaños. Elegimos Sabor Criollo para probar venezolana para una experiencia de cocina diferente, y por recomendación de amigos. Fue una comida fantástica. Comida absolutamente deliciosa, muy buen vino y un servicio encantador (el joven camarero era nuevo y un poco inexperto, pero lo intentó muy duro, y el dueño lo ayudó) y una verdadera relación calidad-precio. Una bonificación encantadora fue la sorpresa de un delicioso pastel de chocolate con velas para la cumpleañera. Definitivamente regresaremos pronto.

Tuve esto para cenar una noche. El servicio fue excelente. La comida era deliciosa, tenía una comida preparada, creo que era un nachos con queso y unas quesidillas con arroz blanco. Porciones muy grandes para mí y no pude terminar las dos pero fue realmente, muy bueno! Menú tenía una variedad de comida y bebidas auténticas de América del Sur y me gustó el ambiente del lugar. ¡Volvería por más cuando sea el próximo en Edimburgo!

Buono il cibo, ma la lentezza del servizio è stata disarmante. Abbiamo dovuto rinunciare al dolce perché dopo 25 minuti non era ancora arrivato.

Ce n'est pas parce qu'on est en Écosse qu'on doit se refuser un peu d'exotisme !
