Taco Libre in Edinburgh, City of

Food is very yummy, would absolutely go back. Only issues I found is that there are different menus with different price points, and the jarritos drinks are expensive compared to other places in Edinburgh.

The best food I've ever eaten, plain and simple. Had the gringa quesadilla and the chicken enchilada. Both fantastic, especially the quesadilla. Portion sizes are perfect, the prices are incredible for what you get. If you're a fan of Mexican food you have to visit Taco Libre.

La carte propose notamment des tacos et aussi des quesadillas, c'est fait maison et sur le moment. C'est simple, bon et authentique, par ailleurs tout comme la décoration de l'endroit qui aura réussi à me faire voyager l'espace d'un repas. Si jamais, j'ai testé l'adresse Shandwick 3.

Great Micheladas and drinks menu. I had the Chili relleno tacos. I loved the sauce they were covered in but wish the chilis were slightly more tender. Overall, it was a great quick lunch, and I'll definitely go again when I'm in the area.

The food is amazing. Nachos and sides could be a bit more authentic to Mexico, but this North of the border it’s okay 😊 P.s the handicapped bathroom must be experienced 😉

I'm a Mexican-American, and OMG, it was soooo good. I wasn't expecting that, being so far from Mexico. The vegetarians in our group were delighted at all the vegetarian options. The fish tacos and halloumi tacos were AMAZING, especially with their habanero salsa. We also had the vegetarian nachos, which were great. The omnivore in our group had the gringa quesadilla and loved it as well. He was also surprised. I'm so glad we tried it.

Absolutely excellent, the service, selection of drinks and atmosphere really gave us the honour to call it 'the local'.

All tacos were very tasty and left us absolutely stuffed. The only minus for me was not enough napkins to clean hands after the meal.

Had a booking for early dinner Small venue but great decor. Food we had was delicious. The snack of tortilla chips, guacamole and sour cream was more expensive than my 2xTacos And the side didn't feel value for money. The mains though definitely worth a try Was cash only on our trip

During our recent trip to Scotland, we happened to pass by this place while walking through Edinburgh and decided to return later the next day for lunch. Turned out that this was a great decision! Though small, this place packs a huge amount of personality. In much of Europe, it has been tough to find a decent margarita (or even a place that knows what the hell a margarita is), but Taco Libre was a welcome exception. We tried some of their specialty tacos, a quesadilla, and chili rellenos…all were excellent and authentic (i.e., not adulterated to fit the local or regional palate…think sweet red sauerkraut on a taco in Germany and you get my drift). Even our youngest, who is not a fan of Mexican food, thought her tacos were amazing! The staff members were great. Also, the water closet/washroom thing…I will not reveal the mystery, but make sure that you do not press the button 😂.

Despite booking and confirming, they had no record of our reservation. Service was chaotic and grumpy. When one of our party asked for another drink it was met by an eye-roll from the waitress. Portions tiny. So many better places to go, don’t waste your money here.

The food in itself was good but not exceptional. I was hoping for 7 or 8 hours slow cooked pork to be more tender. I also think that for the price the portions should be a little bit bigger. As for service it was ok. They did warn before sitting us that it would be cash only and where the nearest ATM was (Scotland bank). We paid for two: £34.5. We had 3 tacos and a soft drink each.

First time here and feels like a real find. Food is fantastic and delicious. Perfectly sized portions and served up quickly. Fantastic value for money. I recommend this to anyone. Next visit will be soon!

Not trying to be anything, just genuinely good authentic Mexican

It is very crowded because it is very small. However, the ambience is super nice, and it helps that the staff is very friendly. The food is very good. I love the pastor tacos and the pepper ones. I prefer quesadillas because they are bigger. The drinks are fine. The only drawback is that the restaurant only accepts cash. No credit or debit cards are accepted.

Have long been a fan since this place opened as the pandemic hit. High quality authentic Mexican food at a great price. Having been to Mexico before it’s up there with the best 🇲🇽🌮

Bit tighter than the Rose Street place, but has a more authentic, less “commercial” atmosphere than the Rose Street one (I love both for the record, might prefer Rose Street’s feel but this one nails the authenticity) but no-matter which one you go for the food is well-worth the price, just keep in mind this one is CASH ONLY, an anomaly in Edinburgh so come prepared.

The food was great and the ambiance really fun. Unfortunately, our dessert order was forgotten (or miscommunicated) and we had to wait 45 minutes while other people were getting their food. Despite that we had a great time and the staff was friendly and apologetic. Important: You have to pay in cash, the only time we ever had to do it during our two-weeks trip.

The food was excellent, the homemade and spectacular habanero sauce, just like those from Mexico itself, without a doubt I will return!!

Our main dish was nice and came fast but. Wouldn't say best Mexican food I ever had. They offer a great variety. the waiter war was really friendly. But sadly the person at the counter or the cook forgot our dessert order and when we asked after about 30 minutes it still took about another 15 to receive as there had been other customers orders in line. They accommodated us by not adding a service fee and the waiter was really sorry. He did nothing wrong as he placed our order at the counter. But the cook was just standing there scrolling his phone while we waited

Food is incredibly overpriced and oddly they only take cash?? I ordered chips and salsa which came to £6.50 and the smallest pot of salsa arrived there was only about one spoon of salsa in it!! The guac and chips is £7 and same story - store bought rubbish chips and you get the smallest amount of guac imaginable. The nachos are odd - for some reason they have peas and carrots on the nachos? It is more like a shepherds pie than nachos, they tasted pretty bad, a shame they weren’t flavoursome and we had spent so much money. There are many other better authentic mexican restaurants in Edinburgh which are far cheaper and more flavoursome.

My family really enjoyed this place. We are originally from Texas and this place took us back to the tastes of Mexican food in Texas. I had the El Diablo drink, the girls had Piña Coladas and Strawberry Daquiris and they were all great. The fish tacos, Biria tacos, Tacos al Pastor, Chicken Tinga, and Chicken enchiladas were excellent. Service was impressive. He made sure we were taken care of at our patio table. Highly recommended.

An actual diamond in the rough!!!!! From the size and the location you would think it would just be average Mexican food, but when you arrive inside your greeted with such a nice and authentic atmosphere. Some of the best Mexican food we've ever had.

Best tacos in Scotland, as good as anything in the states.

Came here to taste the tacos but the suadero was super salty it was always swimming in what looked like oil. The pastor tacos didn't taste like the proper Mexican pastor it just was lacking flavor and seasonings. My husband is from mexico city and this tasted nothing like the real mexican food we eat in USA or Mexico. We left disappointed 😞

Cash only restaurant. There is an ATM across the street, go get cash! I had the carne asada tacos and frozen margarita, hubs had a chimichanga and margarita and the kiddo had a cheese quesadilla. Everything was great. The service and atmosphere. Highly recommend.

The food was OK at best, and overpriced. There are many restuarants in the area that serve better food. Neither the service nor the atmosphere were anything special. This is a cash only business.

My experience here got off to a bit of a rocky start as they are cash only and the instructions on where to find the nearest cash point were a bit vague. They had also ran out of a few things on the menu and didn’t let us know until after we had started to order However, I can safely say this was some of the best Mexican food I’ve had in the UK.

Really cool little Mexican place! The tacos were super tasty - we tried the slow cooked pork and the bacon and chorizo ones. Nachos weren't great, we found them to be a bit soggy, and they could have had more guacamole. Great selection of cocktails - highly recommend the frozen margaritas!

I treated my partner here for his birthday and we loved it! It's very cosy and authentic. The food is to die for, with fresh ingredients, tasty spices and tender meat. My mouth waters just thinking about the quesadillas and stuffed jalapeños which we ordered. The staff are also very friendly and down to earth, adding to the cosy atmosphere. I'm really glad we found this place, tucked away in the corner at the end of princes street - it's perfect 😻

Okay so the food was good. The salsa was the best part so fingers crossed home made, beef maybe on the tougher side but not the end of the world. Ordinarily this would have warranted 4 or 5 stars as was a good experience. What I have an issue with is the hygiene of the female waitress. I saw her touching her nose/face and her shoes on several occasions and then serving food without washing her hands. Not good!

There's a Taco Bell 200m down the street...if you go there instead of this place you should be crucified. Food was made with love, service was great and the vibe was awesome. Definitely coming back.

The cochinita pibil tacos and the toros nachos were very good, but the roast chicken tacos were not up there. The atmosphere and decoration of the place are wonderful. One downside: they do not accept cards, something that is not indicated anywhere.

I have been meaning to come here for a long time and finally made it, well worth the wait! I had steak tacos and enchiladas, delicious food, I cannot recommend it enough, if you are in town give it a go, also very reasonable prices. FYI they don’t take card, bring some cash

Wow. On the outside, Taco Libre looks like a Mexican take on the classic Edinburgh takeaway, lit (as they all are) almost exclusively in neon. The laminated and ring bound menus on formica tables, served by a slightly harried waiter and emphasising that this really, really is a cash-only establishment, don't do anything to disabuse you of this notion. And then you order some food and drinks. And you realise you've discovered some of the best Mexican food in the UK. First, the drinks. We had a frozen lime margarita and a mojito and both were fantastic. I followed up with a strawberry version of the aforementioned margarita, and it was the kind of sweet treat you want to down there and then. But really the star is the food. We ordered a couple of plates of tacos, some deep fried jalapenos, some chips and guacamole and a pollo quesadilla. These were so delicious that we were compelled to order more tacos... and a kind of flatbread... and almost an enchilada before we had to stage an intervention on our own behaviour. The Mexican family who own and run this restaurant clearly care about delivering the best possible, authentic food they can. The care they're putting into the cuisine means that perhaps the surroundings are a bit of an afterthought. And yet said surroundings create a really buzzing atmosphere that makes you love the whole thing even more. A must-visit, as soon as you possibly can.

We had the pollo quesadillas with chips and salsa. The flavours were perfect, great cook on the meat. I've eaten a lot of Mexican food in the US, and for flavour this ranks up with the best. I'd like to see some burrito menu items, but we'll certainly be eating here again.

Perfect intimate spot for a quick tasty dinner out. We walked in and got a table for 2 but there is limited space and many people got turned away as it was full. Vibe is great. Food delicious. We overordered for two with tortillas, a chimichanga each and 2x portions of tacos between us. Drinks also fab. Cash only !

This is a great little restaurant! The servers were so nice and the food was ready in 2 mins! Best tacos I’ve had in Scotland. I got the beef tacos and the meat was so tender and fresh. I would definitely come here again! I asked for the servers recommendation and they recommended the best tacos they had and I did not regret it at all.

Amazing atmosphere, amazing staff with amazing food. I couldn't have asked for more honestly. Though I'm not too familiar with Mexican cuisine, this restaurant screams authentic to me. Not great...tortilla chips in the nachos were stale. No guacamole on the nachos, although it's on the menu. This place is not worth the high prices they charge. Definitely not worth the additional service charge. The waiter was inattentive. Stood behind the counter the whole time messing around on his phone.

Did you know there's a Taco Bell nearby? If you have a couple more quid I'd skip that and come to this place. Foods nice, portions are generous to say the least and there's something really fun about the decor of the place. Luchadores, Frida Kahlo and Vicente Fernández accompany you while you eat.

Ever since our trip to the US last autumn- I have been thinking about the street tacos I ate over there. Coming home, I wanted to find the best tacos in Scotland and these are amazing! Proper corn taco shells is an absolute must and these guys deliver. The margaritas are also incredible, the chilli salt they put around the rim is so addictive!

Food and cocktails were lovely, ordered 2 what we thought were mains and although yummy, we left still hungry and had to stop off and grab a snack at the wee local on way home. Portions need to be bigger if you’re charging main prices.

Been wanting to visit this place for about a year, happy to say it was worth the wait. Food was top class, some of the best Mexican food we’ve had, fresh margaritas made to order. We have the chicken chimichangas and they were undoubtedly stand out winner. Food send to arrived when it was ready, so not all not dishes arrived at once, this didn’t bother us as we tucked in and shared everything between the two of us. We spent around £65 for food, including 2 beers (dos Equis and 2 frozen margaritas). Only down side was some of the furniture was a bit run down. They do add a service charge to the bill automatically, service was great so happy to pay but something to note.

The staff is super friendly and helpful, I called 15 mins before my reservation and added 3 more guests, and they were super accommodating. The facilities are smashing with the lucha libre theme. I'll explain my 3 starts. More than half is what mistakenly, the world knows as "Mexican" food. Fajitas, burritos, and enchiladas (made with flour tortilla and sour cream) aren't Mexican at all. People have to be abducted, and restaurants claiming being "Mexican" aren't helping. Having said that, there are some items in the menu that can be considered Mexican. I had the tiniest Huarache I've ever had in my life. The flavour was ok, but the cream killed most of it. Chicken tinga tostadas were also nice, but the same thing with the cream. Micheladas are made super differently across the country, so I suggest to include where they are from. I was very disappointed with them because they're nothing like I'm used to, but then again, they must be from a different region. And finally, I was sooooo happy when saw "chiles rellenos" on the menu... but I almost cried when I realised they weren't the traditional ponlano pepper.

Hit or a miss Taquería. Some Tacos are delicious,others lack life. The waitress is amazing. Knowledgeable in degrees of commerce. It's Latino owned and better than most of the chains. Give it a whirl. Ps. Cash only.

New review, giving this place the second chance I promised. Much improved, brilliant Al Pastor taco and improved service. I'll definitely be back. ------ I've been wanting to come here for ages. Unfortunately the experience fell a bit flat. The tortillas for the tacos seemed undercooked. And the focus on servicing delivery orders left people dining in poorly served. On the other hand the cocktails were great, as were the nachos and enchilada. I really want to love this place so will definitely be back to give it another chance.
