The best MX food in town…authentic, fresh, fast & terrific service….will definitely go again….cash only but worth it…yum!

Super experience at the Mexican restaurant. Choosing between restaurants in Edinburgh was difficult but in the end I decided on this one and I didn't regret it. We were a group of 10 and they served us immediately; waiting time was practically non-existent. Generous portions of enchiladas and quesadillas, the tacos portions for two for me a bit poor, not filling. The only flaw is the slightly small environment. We spent £18 each, a very fair price, I highly recommend it for an alternative evening, the cuisine really resembles la mexicana verdadera

A very authentic place! So many different decorations 😍 Tacos were really good but portions quite small. The tortillas were not fresh enough :(

Epic! Reminds of the good stuff get back in Texas! Cash only, bit small, more of a date night place, but awesome food! Worth the stop. Make a reservation on weekends. No food photos at ate it way too fast!

Very good meal in a simple place

We are regular visitors to Edinburgh and wanted to try something different so thought we would give Taco Libre a go. Visited with my wife and two young sons (5 and 7). Positives ➕The place looks cool - very quirky and authentic and my boys enjoyed looking at all the decor etc. ➕ The food was decent enough - taste and presentation was fine and left me full. Relatively pricey for what is was, but understand prices since being in city centre. Negatives ➖ The service was really bad. I honestly hate complaining and never really leave reviews but felt like I had to leave one here because I want to let the owners know that the service levels are killing your business. We most likely wont come back or recommend you purely down to the bad service or lack of service. I honestly don’t think it takes much: 1. Act like you give a crap about the customers (we know you don’t but at least pretend, like most other places) 2. Smile, be polite and don’t make us feel like we’re just an another annoyance during your shift. 3. Have some personality - people make businesses. 4. Pay attention - we asked for plain quesadillas for our kids but the waitress either didn’t listen or wrote it down wrong as they came covered in sauce and our boys didn’t eat them. Not looking to put anyone in it but we visited around 1:30pm on Sunday 27th April. The young lady who was serving at the time - cheer up - you are literally making customers feel like a nuisance. Like I said, I do genuinely feel bad leaving a poor review but I think that the place could be really cool if it the service and atmosphere wasn’t that of a funeral. I wish you all the best!

Everything was delicious but the carnitas tacos and the birria tacos were so delicious

Exceptional experience for the limited time we had to visit. The staff welcomed us without a reservation and we had a couple of drinks then were on our way. Based on observation reservations recommended.

We tried 2 times Taco Libre during our vacation in Edinburgh. Their tacos are just amazing! Especially suadero is just another level of all tacos!

Cuando entré por primera vez en Taco Libre, estaba realmente impresionado. El ambiente vibrante y auténtico, la música latinoamericana tocando suavemente de fondo, y los toques estéticos hicieron que me sintiera como si hubiera entrado en una pequeña porción de México (donde he estado en numerosas ocasiones). Desafortunadamente, esa emoción se desvaneció rápidamente. Pedimos comida y bebidas, y las cosas empezaron a ir cuesta abajo desde allí. Al principio, el cóctel de mi pareja sabía muy bien, hasta que notó que tenía un tallo de piña sucio como guarnición, lo que realmente la aplazó. Pedimos una guarnición de nachos (£ 4. 50 ) con una olla pequeña de salsa (£ 3 ) , dos quesadillas (£ 22 ) , y A - Tacos de pollo (£ 9 ). Si bien los precios inicialmente parecían razonables, los tamaños de las porciones contaron una historia diferente. Las raciones eran pequeñas y llegaron tibias en el mejor de los casos, muy abrumadoras, especialmente dado el prometedor comienzo. Ahora, las patatas fritas. Sinceramente, bromeamos sobre lo sólidos que eran, y no en el buen sentido. Eran tan duros que podrías haber cortado un diente. La pequeña olla de crema agria que venía con ellos era igualmente decepcionante. Habrían estado mejor simplemente vertiendo una bolsa de Doritos en un tazón, al menos eso habría tenido mejor textura y sabor. Planteamos el problema con una miembro del personal, pero no parecía ni un poco interesada. Sin disculpas, sin reconocimiento, sin oferta para sacarlo de la cuenta. Apenas tocamos las fichas y nos sentimos completamente cepillados. El servicio al cliente en general fue pobre. En ningún momento durante nuestra comida nadie se registró para ver cómo iban las cosas. El personal estaba más centrado en bromear y jugar detrás de la barra que en interactuar con los clientes. A menos que estuvieras ordenando algo, eras básicamente invisible. Para colmo, los baños estaban ubicados más allá de una pequeña área de cocina abierta, que no gritaba exactamente higiene. Y una nota final: cuando llegó el momento de pagar, £ 58 Me di cuenta de que se había agregado automáticamente un cargo por servicio. El recibo decía que este cargo debía ser solicitado, pero nadie nos preguntó sobre él. En general, esto fue una gran decepción. Tenía grandes esperanzas basadas en el ambiente, pero tristemente, no voy a regresar. ¡Es hora de encontrar un mejor lugar mexicano o debería haber ido a Taco Bell!

Great mexican. I have only been for lunch. Maybe 3 times now. Once was closed unexpectedly so had to go elsewhere. Note it is cash only. Which is cool with me. But be prepared. I always have two types of tacos, 4 in total. 2 might be a light lunch but 4 is the sweet spot. Amazing flavours. £18 plus optional tip. I highly recommend 🥰 Very friendly service.

Llegué a este restaurante en Rose Street esperando cosas buenas, pero tristemente estaba decepcionado La comida era pobre, no repugnante, pero simplemente no de una calidad decente que cabría esperar y el precio que cobraron fue impactante. Pedimos un lado de nachos y salsas que salieron después de la comida a pesar de que les pedí que lo cancelaran y los nachos eran los non nacho más baratos como los nachos que jamás encontrarías. La comida en sí consistía en un pequeño burrito con tres nachos que sobresalían de un extraño guacamole de color... lo cual era horrible. El inodoro está abajo frente a la cocina, que era un poco raro también, ya que tienes que caminar justo al lado de la comida que se saca para usar las instalaciones En general, una muy mala experiencia y hay un restaurante mexicano mucho más atractivo más adelante, que habría sido una mejor opción, creo

Absolutely gutted. I went into this place with such hope that I was going to get really good fresh food.. And I left as quickly as I could because I was so disappointed. I'll list the positives first. + The atmosphere in the restaurant is cool, it's a tiny place but there's nice decor, which gives you enough to look at while waiting. + Although it's a small shop, it doesn't feel overly crowded, it was fairly quiet when we went in but I think it would still be okay if it was packed. + Good selection of drinks. The negatives...... 😬 - The food was... Undesirable. I got beef tacos and chicken tacos. The beef had such an overwhelming taste of beef stock. Generic beef stock. I couldn't take the fresh onion, tomato or herbs they had put in the taco. The chicken taco was much the same although the pineapple in the taco did help. But the taste of the beef ones was the reason why I couldn't finish them. It just tasted so salty and generically beefy. I can't wrap my head around it as the fresh ingredients should have shown some flavour. - It felt like food I could make at home, but worse.. And far more expensive. When I do make it at home the fresh tomatoes, onion and coriander just shine through, rather than getting lost in the beef stock/oil here. And the price of the tacos Vs the 'quality ingredients' is massive. £9 for 2 tacos is fine as they had a lot of food in them. But it's evidently quantity over quality. Overall we ordered 4 food items and the bill came to £55. And this is because of my next point. - The service. It was an extra £4 service charge, give or take. I really don't expect much because I work in retail/hospitality and I understand some days you just need to get through the day. But the lack of any smiles, warmth or general nice service is lacking massively. Especially if I'm 'paying' for it. I dunno. I'm absolutely gutted, and I spent the rest of the evening feeling like I wasted a good chunk of money, and I lost my appetite for the evening for anything else. It was definitely the worse visit/experience of the 5 day trip to Edinburgh.

Interior was very fun and visually appealing. The quesadilla wasn’t the best, but my friend had the tacos which looked much tastier so perhaps if I were to return I would try the tacos instead. A little shocked at prices however as it is £3 for extra salsa, sauce or sour cream!

This review is the result of our last 3 visits which were 3/3 poor experiences. We were huge fans of the place and recommended them to everyone, we would bring work colleagues here and friends and family when they came to visit. Having been to Mexico we thought that this was the only place that came close to authentic flavours. However the drop in quality has been astonishing. One experience we had fish baja which used to have fantastic deep fried fish in a light batter, on this occasion is was an actual fish finger. Went to the rose street one and had a suadero taco that was absolutely dripping in grease. I don't mean a bit fatty, I mean a 1cm deep pool of oil on the plate. I gave feedback at the time and was told 'it's meant to be like that' having had Suadero tacos in both mexico and taco libre several times before they just aren't. Tonight we went again determined that the earlier experiences were just one offs but it was again pretty poor. Fast food tacos, slow service (server on the phone and had to be told several times by the chef, food was ready) and new raised prices. If anything sums up the cost cutting, we had dinner listening to amazon music ads. A business that won't pay £10 a month (a portion of tacos) for music doesn't care about customer experience This is not the same restaurant that opened in 2020.

¡Grandes nachos! Soy vegetariana y tenían increíbles opciones vegetarianas y veganas. Los nachos estaban cargados y me encantaron especialmente los frijoles refritos. Fui a la ubicación de Rose Street y estaba muy cerca por dentro.

The food was amazing! The birria ala brisket tacos were so good and tasted just like birria. The guacamole was tasty and had just the right amount of spice. If you are looking for something a little bit more spicy, go ahead give the chipotle salsa a try. My sister and friend tried the chicken flautas and they both said the flautas were really good. I chatted with the owners and they were both very friendly and welcoming. Besides the great food, I liked the atmosphere as it made me feel a little closer to home. Definitely recommend Taco Libre if you are looking for authentic Mexican food.

This place is a hidden gem and is always full, we came back from our holiday is Mexico and a few months later stubbled along this place. Food is as close to authentic as you can get without having to go to Mexico. Highly recommend

Interior has a Mexican Wrestling theme, great atmosphere, great authentic food. Boss is from Mexico so you do get Mexican food, no TexMex, so as a half Mexican myself I appreciated that. Will definitely be back. Picture of the chicken chimichanga. Food not overly spicy unless you ask for it.

Ordered a chicken enchilada and was so let down with what was presented to me. The staff pulled out a pre-cooked enchilada from the fridge and stuck it in the microwave. What they served me was hot on the outside and Cold on the inside. I could have went to the supermarket and done a better job of heating it myself. Avoid and just go to Taco Bell 2 minutes along the road. Hurts me to say that as want to support local but that is life sometimes. Shop also doesn’t accept cards, cash only.

I’ve visited Taco Libre a few times over the last couple of months and it’s always been exceptional!! The staff are lovely, the little restaurant is so nice inside (and they even have seating outside with some heaters)! But most importantly the food always tastes amazing!! Definitely some of the best tacos in Edinburgh! Can highly recommend!

I regularly visit Taco Libre and it is fantastic. No where else in Edinburgh satisfies that desire for authentic and high quality Mexican food. On top of the amazing food, the service and atmosphere is also perfect. A chilled, laid back and tasty dining experience.

Very nice Birria and Suadero tacos. However, marked down because of cash only. It's a ridiculous policy in 2024 - if just ONE customer walks away because of cash only per month, that customer would have paid your card machine fees. I know because I've ran businesses before where we took much higher volumes of money by card and our bill was max £60 a month, and there are many more options now for cheaper. Please, just take card - it's not expensive, and it's essentially especially for younger customers who barely ever carry cash. Bad business decision not to take card nowadays.

I LOVE mexican food, and this place did not disappoint. The peach margarita, and mango margarita were very good! I highly recommend the campachano tacos! The Chicken tinga empanadas were also a delight! Definitely stop by if you like mexican cuisine.

Two years ago (September 2022) me and my husband visited Scotland, and as a Mexican living in Paris since a couple of years I was so happy and proud to find a Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh. Food was good; there was a Scottish guy and a nice girl from Colombia who was our waitress and also the restaurant cashier. We crossed a couple of words in spanish and then I paid and left. After walking around 15 minutes in the Edinburgh’s streets I found out that I have left my umbrella at the restaurant (truth is it was an expensive umbrella, around 100 euros) and I know it was there because I put it in another chair from our table; I went back and I asked directly to the Colombian girl and her face suddenly became pale as if she saw a ghost. When I asked her about my umbrella she went directly to look for it (she opened a door where there were different items) and then the Scottish guy stopped her and walked towards me and he became a little bit aggressive by telling me that they didn’t took my umbrella (this was a very rare and unusual attitude) so I realized that maybe he was lying. My husband asked to customers that were there on another table when we left the restaurant and they mentioned that it was the guy who took my umbrella and went to hide it. We were so angry because even with witnesses they didn’t gave us back anything. I didn’t want to make a big deal because we didn’t know well the city neither the people and we didn’t want to have problems, but I think is a big shame that people steal in your face. The thing I regret the most is sharing my story after 2 years, because I think about the owners who surely worked a lot to own a restaurant in Edinburgh and is not fair that all those efforts are wasted by third people. I hope they don't work anymore there and that customers never have to worry that staff might steal their stuff.

A thimbleful of pico de galo at £2.50 plus service. Outrageous! Quessdilla was good. The rest not. Rating 3/10. Sorry. Oh and no alcohol free beer.

This is a wee hidden gem, hidden away in a wee corner at the very end of Princes Street. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The vibe was great, felt like a real authentic Mexican restaurant. The food was excellent - best Chille beef nachos we've tasted!!! Had the Chicken Tinga Chimichangas and the Beef Tacos and absolutely loved them. Totally authentic Mexican food, at very reasonable prices. 3 items between us that we shared, 2 beers and it only came to £37.50. The portions are not huge but we were still stuffed after what we ate. Will definitely be back - 10 out of 10!!

Tenía el pollo Tinga Chimichangas y los Tacos de Carne y absolutamente me encantaron. Comida mexicana totalmente auténtica, a precios muy razonables. 3 artículos entre nosotros que compartimos, 2 cervezas y solo llegó a £ 37. 50 . Las porciones no son enormes, pero todavía estábamos llenos después de lo que comimos. Definitivamente volveré - 10 de 10!

The best food I've ever eaten, plain and simple. Had the gringa quesadilla and the chicken enchilada. Both fantastic, especially the quesadilla. Portion sizes are perfect, the prices are incredible for what you get. If you're a fan of Mexican food you have to visit Taco Libre.

Un petit restaurant mexicain présent en plusieurs endroits en ville, avec tes horaires d'ouverture plus étendus que ceux des restaurants habituels, bien pratique, notamment en cas de fringale en fin de soirée. La carte propose notamment des tacos et aussi des quesadillas, c'est fait maison et sur le moment. C'est simple, bon et authentique, par ailleurs tout comme la décoration de l'endroit qui aura réussi à me faire voyager l'espace d'un repas. Si jamais, j'ai testé l'adresse Shandwick 3.

Great Micheladas and drinks menu. I had the Chili relleno tacos. I loved the sauce they were covered in but wish the chilis were slightly more tender. Overall, it was a great quick lunch, and I'll definitely go again when I'm in the area.

The food is amazing. Nachos and sides could be a bit more authentic to Mexico, but this North of the border it’s okay 😊 P.s the handicapped bathroom must be experienced 😉

I'm a Mexican-American, and OMG, it was soooo good. I wasn't expecting that, being so far from Mexico. The vegetarians in our group were delighted at all the vegetarian options. The fish tacos and halloumi tacos were AMAZING, especially with their habanero salsa. We also had the vegetarian nachos, which were great. The omnivore in our group had the gringa quesadilla and loved it as well. He was also surprised. I'm so glad we tried it.

Absolutely excellent, the service, selection of drinks and atmosphere really gave us the honour to call it 'the local'.

During our recent trip to Scotland, we happened to pass by this place while walking through Edinburgh and decided to return later the next day for lunch. Turned out that this was a great decision! Though small, this place packs a huge amount of personality. In much of Europe, it has been tough to find a decent margarita (or even a place that knows what the hell a margarita is), but Taco Libre was a welcome exception. We tried some of their specialty tacos, a quesadilla, and chili rellenos…all were excellent and authentic (i.e., not adulterated to fit the local or regional palate…think sweet red sauerkraut on a taco in Germany and you get my drift). Even our youngest, who is not a fan of Mexican food, thought her tacos were amazing! The staff members were great. Also, the water closet/washroom thing…I will not reveal the mystery, but make sure that you do not press the button 😂.

Despite booking and confirming, they had no record of our reservation. Service was chaotic and grumpy. When one of our party asked for another drink it was met by an eye-roll from the waitress. Portions tiny. So many better places to go, don’t waste your money here.
