Overall tense atmosphere. When we asked to pay by card, staff acted like it was unprecedented and had to scramble for the card reader. Noticed this happened with other customers, too. Generally felt a burden to be there. Coffee was watery and pastry wasn't up to the price point. Fried breakfast (beans, toast, egg, sausage, tomato, mushrooms) was okay. Had better breakfasts at much cheaper cafes.

I know London is expensive but charging almost £4 a cup in a cafe with 'shabby not-so-chic' furniture with lukewarm service means that the coffee is outstanding, yes? Sadly, no, it was very mediocre. Back to our preferred cafe without a doubt (it was closed this time) and will definitely not be visiting this one again.

This is a rickety old venue in need of a revamp ...but a place which reminded me of the very old Coffee shops in Greece. We popped in for a quick brunch before heading off the the British museum. We walked into the shop and instantly started staring at the menu high up on the wall, The owner said ..OK well don't say hello then. I apologised and said..Ooo sorry we were staring at your menu he replied laughingly that's OK I was only joking. Now to some that may appear a rude welcome on the part of the owner. However, to me it was typical Mediterranean humour, which to some - may not always fall well. Ok so - the mismatch chairs and tables, old crockery and metal tea pots from the 1970's are not fashionable, but I actually liked the step back in time feeling. Food was freshly made and prepared quickly. Not at all expensive for its location. You may find better in the area, but I liked its difference.

Stopped here after a visit to the British Museum, we sat outside and ordered four different sandwiches which were freshly made. We also had the scones, cream and jam again fresh and lovely. When we had finished I went into the shop to pay and they added it all up from memory on a calculator, then when I tried to pay they asked if I had cash, I only had enough cash to pay half of the bill and the rest I put on card. Not a problem though and enjoyed the visit.

Three of us stopping at this cafe after a visit to the British Museum. Please beware, this place is cash only! I wish they had made it clear before we ordered, sat, and finished our afternoon treat. Also, they didn’t have a till, just a hand calculator to work out the bill. I have a feeling we were over charged. But there is no receipt to check! Is this legal, no VAT receipt? I felt like we were treated as tourists - someone who will be out of the country soon so won’t make a fuss! The cakes look great from the window. I ordered cream tea, cost £7.90. The scone was soft and fluffy but with an albeit tiny insect baked in. Now I realised I don’t remember seeing a hygiene rating display in the window. Can you check? The cream was okay but the jam was some sweet tasteless affair. The tea was a Yorkshire tea bag in a metal tea pot. With the above info, I will leave you to be the judge.

Please read the negative comments. They were shouting at me and other customers. The ladies working there are from Poland. They switch off the credit card machine. They were asking only for cash from customers. They were asking for euros and dollars. I had only my card. I told them before seating down because I heard them saying the credit card machine wasn't working. They told me to seat down and pay later. When I went to pay they told me the machine is not working and to give them euros or dollars. I told them I don't have anything. The lady working there told me she got euros and dollars in her bag. I asked her to show me, she had more then 1 thousand in euros and dollars. They were shouting at me to find the money. It was no cash machine around. Then they told me to come back the next day to pay which I did even when I saw the lady working had the money back. I believe this is money laundry.

We happened upon this cafe after visiting the British Museum. We both had their cream tea - scone with clotted cream and jam plus tea. Their scones are the best!! In fact, we were at the start of our UK trip and everywhere we went we had cream tea, but none tasted as good as Ruskin's. When we came back to London at the end of our trip, one of the first things we did was head back there to have another scone and tea - delicious!!

Everything is overpriced. 5 quid for a very average scone with cheap jam - no thanks. Their menu is misleading as well. A tea is 1.30, a pot is 2.5. But a pot of tea is a "per person price" as you find out when the bill arrives, so if you order a pot of tea with 2 cups it's 5 quid. Total rip off, many other places within 1-2 minute walk in this area that have proper London prices, better quality offerings and are much nicer. I live nearby, but first time stopping by this place. They lost what could have been a repeat customer. Clearly setup to rip off tourists visiting the nearby British Museum. I want to support the cafe's, bars and restaurants as much as possible but don't want to be blatantly ripped off.

Cuarenta libras? ? ! I visited the cafe with my son as part of his 21st birthday celebrations which involved a day trip to London. The cafe looked nice enough from the outside, although once inside, the cakes didn't look quite so appetising as first thought. We were short on time so decided to stay. We both ordered carrot cake, and we agreed to a scoop of ice cream with it (not realising this incurred an additional charge). Foolishly I didn't ask the price of the cake, or tea. We were charged over £6 for each slice of cake with the total bill coming in at over £20 for a disappointing slice of cake, scoop of mediocre vanilla ice cream and cup of tea each. The carrot cake was not nice , the frosting tasting of just butter and the cake a dry sponge. If only we'd realised there was a pret just around the corner....

We were also given a Scottish five pound note in our change . Although fully aware that they are legal tender, nevertheless they are almost impossible to change in our local town. What a performance asking the staff to change it for pound coins or an English fiver. We live in London and always go to this cafe when visiting to the British Museum, as it's at least as good as others in the area and in an excellent location. I'm amazed at the negative reviews which bear no resemblance to our experience. We haven't had a full meal here, but the sandwiches are always delicious, there's about seven different types of of tea and the coffee is good. When the weather is fine it's a fantastic place to sit and chat outside. I've never seen the people who work there being rude to anyone.

Like other reviews, I confirm the chill units are not on...and on a warm day like today everything is going off. No basic hygiene procedures followed. And the baked potatoes were a few days old....bland sagging cheese and warm drinks. We were forced to pay over 10% as a service charge! Outrageous....these people should be shut down by the Health Inspectors.

On a course in London, I popped in here hoping for something tasty. From the outside it looks fine. I should have trusted my first thought on entering which was not to stay. The sandwich fillings in the chill(?) counter looked dry and discoloured but I was caught off guard with a smiling chap asking me what I wanted. I chose spinach and potato soup. Never in my life have I had such a watery soup with very little flavour. Lots of pepper was added. The colour was good though. It was quite busy outside. Inside it was a bit rundown. Avoid. Didn't venture to the lavatory so cannot comment.

Me and 3 friends have just been here and ordered 3 full English breakfasts and a sausage sandwich! 2 of the breakfasts came with raw sausages which we promptly sent back to then wait half an hour for them to return with all the other food cold and no sausage sandwich. Upon taking our food into this dirty cafe we got no apology and still no sandwich. We could not get served so walked out and the owner chased us down the street! He then made us come back into the shop and said that we wound him up as we smiled when we came in! He said that it was busy as it was a Sunday and that he had made them for us yet we never had a sausage sandwich and it wasn't even being cooked! He then tried to blame us as customers were in the shop! Do not go here it's the worst and most awful place on earth! Thank god for pret round the corner!

We made a quick stop for a coffe and cake, which were both ok, but had we seen the toilets before rather than after eating we'd have walked straight out. Truly vile! This place needs a visit from health inspectors.

Just wanted to have a coffee and cake before visiting museum, while I got coffee order my wife asked advise about cake, staff answer was shocking: "I do not eat cakes and I do not advise women!"...Just could not believe this was an answer in London.

Plain food, cafe staff were friendly enough. Between us we had a panini, a jacket potato and a toasted sandwich and none of us were overly impressed - nothing really wrong with it but it was fairly bland tasting. Service was slow, I'd finished my sandwich by the time my friend got her panini! Quite expensive too for the service and quality of food. I'd give this one a swerve if I were you - there are other places nearby that look better to me.

I did not inspect the kitchen or loo as others seem to have done but can only say I had a very fresh and tasty scone with jam and real cream and a decent pot of tea at a reasonable price, quickly and pleasantly served, Sitting outside on a warm day in a pedestrianised area near the British Museum is to be recommended. The pub opposite can get busy but good spot for people watching!

We ordered lemon cheesecake and cookie with raisins. The cookie served with butter and jam. Tastes not so perfect but their looks are charming. Stuff were friendly. Coffee was good but you have to wait for a little bit for the service.

Whilst walking around Bloomsbury we found Ruskins Cafe. On a hot day it is nice to sit outside but does get busy on the street due to all the visitors from the museum. We had a coffee and a cake which was reasonably price. However, the downside is that when i went to the toilets which is downstairs you could peer into the the kitchen which wasn't the cleanest.

Prior to visiting the Ruskin Café, I had been in the British Museum where I saw the preserved remains of Lindow Man, who around 2000 years ago, was strangled and violently clubbed, his throat was cut and was placed face down in a peat bog outside Wilmslow, Cheshire. Truly, I envy Lindow Man, for he did not have to suffer the primeval horror and agonies of eating the full English breakfast at the Ruskin Café just across the road from his eventual resting place in Bloomsbury. Lindow Man did not have to eat the raw, grey sausage or pink bacon flecked with salty scum; he did not have to stomach the rubbery puddle of wet mushrooms or drink the sour mud of a flat white, nor did he have to endure paying a frankly absurd £14 for the privilege. I would rather face his violent end than go through any of that sadness again. The manager could not look me in the eye, muttering a pitiful “sorry” back at me when I handed over my money; Lindow Man, you, face down in the bog, garrotted, choking on your warm, ancient blood and dirty Cheshire water, had more dignity and human grace than the heartless husk in an apron stood behind the counter of the Ruskin Café.

We popped in on a recent visit to London for a snack, from the outside it looks lovely and the cakes look lovely but the salads looks tired, like yesterdays food, the staff are nice but once you sit down and have a look this place is filthy. I went to the loo and I was SHOCKED as to how dirty the toilets were, as in not cleaned in months, the door to the kitchen was open and it was filthy. It would not have been out of place in "how clean is your house".I was very disappointed as it is not expensive or difficult to keep a cafe clean.Do not go here!

Whilst on the outside we were attracted by the nice cakes and pastries in the window, inside the food prepared in a microwave obviously using cheap ingredients in a dirty kitchen. We both ordered a full English and there was option of brown toast and it was buttered with margarine not butter and the eggs were burnt and the bacon and sausages were clearly not of the highest quality. Whilst the coffee was its only redeeming quality, the 50% mark up for the 'pleasure' of dining in was extortionate!! The breakfast was extremely expensive and at the very least we expected something decent for the price. Avoid at all costs!

Looked like a relatively cheap but decent cafe........... Oh how we were done up like a kipper! We ordered a pot of tea for two, and we each had a slice of quiche with a portion of salad. The man at the counter had a rather uninterested manner... He said "you can take your own tea to the table - here it is" .... I duly went back and forth to our table three times - no tray was offered. Our quiches arrived, he left them at the end of our table and said you'll have to decide whose is whose yourselves. We began to wonder why we had chosen to come in here.....At the end of a very bland and uninspiring quiche I went up to pay. He had his back to me and I asked if I could pay. He asked me to repeat what I had ordered. He duly totted it up on a hand held calculator. "£26.81" he said. I said "I beg your pardon?"..... "£26.81" he repeated. TWENTY SIX POUNDS & 81pence for two slices of manufactured quiche, a spoonful of salad and two cups of tea!!!! Good god. We couldn't believe it. How appalling. How outrageous. How greedy. How dreadful. I told him I would be reviewing him on here. He didn't care. I am incensed.

The food was obviously bought in and was served with a take it or leave it attitudeThe shop owner, a vertically challenged man with all the classic 'small man' attributes was rude arrogant and then charged about twice the normal market rate for the privilge of wasting 40 minutes and £27 in his unpleasant company.I suppose he gets his kicks from insulting tourists as the Britiah Museum is nearbyAvoid like the plague

This place has the potential to be really great. It's authentic, well positioned and well favoured by light and prospect. And, unfortunately, this has been the ruination of it. The owners and staff are well aware of the benefits and thus are slack, lazy and seemingly unafraid of overcharging. We got a pot of tea with no teabags in it. So...hot water. Then they gave us one teabag for the pot, yet charged £2 per person. A panini with tomato and mozzarella was almost five pounds as was the small portion of soup. My lovely companion rather acidly points out that the crusty bread that came with the latter was the best part of it. I had scrambled eggs...actually one. One single scrambled egg. Sausages were 'out' so they gave me two slices of utterly tough bacon instead and charged me £6.75 for it. I realise overheads must be high but this is an appalling situation, it really is. The situation of the restaurant is lovely, and I think that and the ghostly atmosphere of culture (lots of flyers for plays etc) means that they are indifferent to repeat custom as there will always be a stream of passers by. And unfortunately they're probably right...

How this cafe can have a '5 rating' for hygiene is beyond comprehension. The staff are mostly rude, unprofessional and lacking in basic customer care.I witnessed a customer being harangued for talking to the owner as his back was turned. "Don't talk to the back of my head! That is not a conversation!" he shouted. This exchange made me shudder to think what impression the (foreign) visitor gained of our hospitality industry. She was obviously upset. The cloths used to 'clean' the counter after each sandwich is made look disgusting and the overall establishment is run down and, in places, appears to be held together with tape. The toilet is a disgrace. The cup of tea was OK.

I work around the corner and thought I would give this place a try for a somewhat late lunch. I walked in and there were no customers. The owner immediately wanted my order, but I asked for moment to actually read the menu. I asked 2 questions about the menu as it wasn't clear to me what type of sandwich/salad was offered as there were no descriptions of what was in the dishes. This annoyed the owner. When my colleague popped in 1-minute later, the owner made rude comments about me to my co-worker related to how long I was taking to order. As a result, we both walked out and not only do we not eat there, we do not recommend it to other colleagues or clients who often dine in the area. I cannot say anything about the quality of the food, but what I saw did not visually look very appealing and there are plenty of other similar cafes in the area with very nice employees/owners (Salt and Pepper, Bloomsbury Cafe, etc.).

Skip the hotel food. Go for a real British "fry up" breakfast at the Ruskins Café. The full thing contains sausage, eggs, fried mushrooms, baked beans, and several pieces of buttered toast. Coffee and teas are excellent and well above average. The juices, however, are not fresh. If you do not want the full meal, they have pastries, American style (large) muffins, etc. Both inside and outdoor seating available.

The whole menu is greasy, high sugar fake meat options. No salad, veg or fruit here. If you diabetic or sugar sensitive avoid! I follow a WFPD and hate the taste of meat. I had a side of beans that were very average, they could have served it on a lettuce leaf or something to make it healthier.

On 19 September at 11am, we were very offended by the racist attitude of the bearded staff member who served us on the leftmost side facing the counter. He first greeted us with ni hao and told us that we were not Chinese, but after repeatedly taunting us with ni hao, xie xie, and other Chinese terms, he continued to be racist to us despite the protests of the staff next to him. I felt bad and tried to quickly leave with my shopping bag containing food, but he rudely blocked my hand, and said "napkin" acted in an unknown manner. His racist behaviour made our trip very unpleasant. We will never use this cafe again, nor will we recommend it to our friends. If the head office would put some effort into managing their employees, You could be a beloved brand.
