Ruby's in East Hertfordshire

Absolutely awful, takeaway was so cold and dry , nothing tasted nice at all , will not be going back. What a waste of food!.

We have always been huge huge fans of Rubys since moving to bishops stortford in 2021, so much so that our family and friends drive 45 mins for their dishes. The chicken tikka masala is usually to die for, huge chicken chunks cooked tandoori style before being added to the rich and creamy sauce. Freshly cooked delicious food. However, the last few times we’ve been it’s been a real disappointment. Firstly, their prices have hiked up dramatically. It cost us nearly £70 in a recent restaurant visit for 2 curry’s, 2 rices and a few poppadoms and a beer each. We understand the economy and know this sometimes can’t be helped. The final straw for me is that our takeaway order from the restaurant this weekend was disgusting. I got my usual order and was surprised to see the chicken tikka masala arrive in a yellow /brown sauce, which was all curdled and lumpy. The restaurant said that this is due to legislation that they can no longer use food colouring. I make tikka at home from scratch and no food colouring is used, and I still get a lovey red colour from the spices. The chicken was chewy and not cooked the usual way. Really really disappointing and I hope that this is read, and actioned as it was the best tikka masala in town.

Staff were all very friendly and always ready to help when needed. Friendly environment. Very happy with the choices of foods.

We ordered a takeaway from here. I have coeliac disease and when I rang up to enquire about gluten free I was advised most of the menu was gluten free! I asked if the onion bhajis were and they said yes and assured me they weren’t fried with anything containing gluten, as this is usually the problem! Really enjoyed it, all good quality, will definitely return.

Meals took a long time to come which I don’t normally have an issue with as I tend to assume it means less batch cooking is going on. But we had to ask 3 times for tap water which just showed poor service all around really. Topped off by the waiter asking for a bigger tip….

Very rushed service , only 3 tables of other customers in the restaurant. So I don’t understand what the rush was. Dips for popadoms all ready waiting on the table when we arrived. Followed by 3 onion Bhaji’s. We had 3 chicken dishes Chicken Madhubala, chicken tikka , and chicken Tikka masala. All 3 chicken dishes the chicken was tuff and chewy. Which means poor quality chicken used. Two Pilau rice Sag Aloo one ginger beer 2 large draught kingfishers and Two small draught kingfishers Total £107 Sadly won’t be returning. Very over priced.

Understaffed. Waited over an hour for food to arrive which detracted from the enjoyment of the meal. Unlikely to return in the near future.

I felt for the single waiter responsible for seating guests, taking orders and clearing tables - clearly too few staff on for a full New Year's Eve and he was run off his feet. After waiting for 30mins without receiving the drinks menu, let alone ordering, we left at 9.15pm. Would not go to the trouble of pre-booking a table here again.

What has happened to what once used to be fantastic food from Ruby’s? Our food arrived lukewarm, the chicken was dry, hard & contained pieces of bone and gristle. Two meals were sadly inedible.

We ordered a take away, nearly 2 hrs later no food! We called to ask when our order would arrive and were told at least another 20mins and were told we would get a call back within 5 minutes for an update and what they could do for the inconvenience. 20mins later no phone, no food. So we called back again to be told our food was on its way and we would get a 10% refund on an order that was over £100. The food arrived about 10mins after that and was stone cold. We called again but apparently there wasn’t anyone we could talk to as the manger wasn’t there!! We ordered this a weekend treat for the family which sadly was completely ruined by this experience.

I booked a table for 8pm as a special treat for my partner we can't go out oftern the last time was for her birthday inJuly. We arrived at 7.50 pm were to sit down in the bar area and wait , 25 minutes later still waiting for a table eventually at 8.30. It took another 20 minutes before someone took our drinks order then we were left another 20 minutes before they took our food order. The food finally arrived and I was shocked it was nothing like the quality i have had before at Ruby's I asked the waiter about the rice that looked dried out rubish and certainly not what it was the many times i have been before he just grumbled at me . The meat wat chewy an several pieces were inedible ans was the narn bread. I will mot be returning to this restaurant which is a shame as i thought it was ok before this experience but no never again!!!!!

Really disappointed! Usually love this place but just had an bad experience this time, even though we booked a table in advance we had to wait for 20 minutes then waited ages to be served, the food was not up to usual standard, we were not offered another drink, dessert or coffee Very disappointed ☹️

Ruby’s has a takeaway and a restaurant in Bishop’s Stortford. I recently ordered a takeaway from the Hockerill restaurant. The meal was not great. Our lamb korma was nice. The onion bhajis were really greasy. They came with mint sauce but no salad. The bhindi bhaji was stringy, undercooked and the position was really small. I was unimpressed with the meal. Fortunately there are several other Indian restaurants and takeaways nearby and I will use them instead next time.

They was really rude to all my family and we didn’t get served for 30 minutes I will never come again

Have visited this restaurant a few times and every time is an enjoyable experience. The staff are super friendly, attentive and polite. And the food is incredible no matter what you order, but my fave is their chicken tikka masala, it is delicious. Thank you Rubys :)

Ordered an Indian takeaway delivery, gave me the time but but they were over an 1 1/2 hours late I wouldn’t mind if they let me know, but not to say anything I think it’s very unprofessional

been getting our takeaway from here for the last few months a week by week they are getting worse. even though i book a delivery as soon as they are open on a saturday it can take up to 1 hour 40 mins for the delivery. and when you call for an update they just say its on the way, no apology , they dont care , onion salad that you pay for is literally a desert spoonful , rice is always a small portion and for the money they charge its not acceptable. considering we are spending between £75-£100 a week there ,we will be looking for somewhere else in future.

After the last three deliveries we won’t be using Rubys again. Late deliveries, missing food items or stale poppadoms have soured our experience so much that we’ll use a local alternative with there being so much competition in this space, they need to pull their socks up. Shame because the food has generally been good.

I once left a shining review for this takeaway. That's all changed tonight. We made a simple change to our order and phoned to make the amendment. Was greeted by some arrogant hostile little boy who spoke to my wife like she was dirt. So much so I had to take the phone and ask what the problem was. This horrible individual starts arguing with me constantly and interrupting everything I was saying. I've worked in the Industry for 20 years and have never been spoken to, nor have I ever spoken to the customer like that. How dare you! I was even asked "what am I supposed to do?" That's not my problem , I'm the customer and I made a change to my order. The end result is I was hung up on by this boy and they took £60 - double my original order out of my account and refused to refund any of it. Disgusting service and I cannot believe we've been treated this way. Nearly 7 years we've used Ruby's. NEVER AGAIN.

We went to Ruby's for a family meal. There was a huge party in there, all very drunk and loud and there was no social distancing. A group of 4 men then came in and sat back to back with our group - literally touching us! We were pinned against the wall so couldn't move. We finished our meals quickly and left. It was not enjoyable or relaxing. The 'party group' were shouting and making lots of noise, swapping tables and hugging each other. The food was nice but the atmosphere was awful! I wonder if they have heard about Covid-19!?

We decided to order from Ruby's as it was our anniversary. We haven't had an Indian from here for quite a while. But they were always good. Tonight however, we were very disappointed. The food was mediocre at best. Not much flavour in the korma and it was quite watery. The other main dish was meant to be hot and it wasn't anywhere near. Very disappointed will go back to our regular restaurant from now on.

Even though it was really busy being part of the eat out to help out scheme, we had a wonderful meal my chicken dish was cooked in peanut and cashew sauce and was to die for, they like spice here and know how to use it. Happy and polite staff overall a pleasureable experience.

Our first visit to Ruby's. More used to Bangladesh cuisine so this was something a bit different. The food was nice and well cooked with plenty of flavour. The restaurant was well lit and not dark/ dingy and also very clean. Good level of service. Would go back again.

We spotted on Facebook that this place was doing 25% off during August on Sundays and Thursdays so booked up for dinner and I’d had a recommendation that it was nice so gave it a try. It was okay, the staff were nice but the food lacked any real flavour. We had a mild dish and a medium hot dish but both were very mild. Don’t get me wrong we ate everything and it was good but I’d not rush back. Also I just realised we never got our 25% off! First time here but won’t be rushing back.

Beautiful location with a modern Indian twist. The food is delicious and one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve eaten in. The staff are friendly and some of the dishes magical (try the starter platter with dry ice surprise) not the cheapest in town but well worth the money.

Another awesome take away from Ruby’s, delivered contactless just when they said despite big demand at the moment on a Saturday night. Balti’s are always full of flavour and great sides as well. We’ve tried most of the others in town over the years but never been disappointed by Ruby’s. Can’t understand why some others are so highly rated sometimes. Give Ruby’s a try.

Ruby’s have a restaurant and a takeaway service. During lockdown they are operating a contact free service for takeaways from both the restaurant and the takeaway venue. We ordered the day before just to make sure they could manage our order but they were taking orders when I collected. Great service from our favourite Indian restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious as always. Supporting local business has never been so important.

Warm welcome - friendly staff. Delicious food - particularly my salmon starter which was full of flavour and the salmon was beautifully cooked. I had lobster for my main which was stunningly presented and there was plenty of lobster - personally the flavour of the lobster was slightly masked by the sauce. My partner's mixed Biryani was also full of flavour. Lovely decor with booths and a lively atmosphere. Would definitely go back.

I had been wanting to try this local restaurant for a while now.Booked in advance online which was quick and easy to do. They email you to confirm and then again to remind you before the booking.The service was brilliant. The staff there were all very friendly and helpful. We couldn't decide what we wanted from the main menu so our waiter offered to have the chef make us something a little different. The food was really nice. I will now try these guys out for takeaway in the future too.

Placed £100 order and one dish was missed off. Complained shorty after and was instantly given the option of delivery or refund. Opted for refund and funds were dropped around in cash shortly after. These guys really do care about customer service!

One of the best Indian Restaurants in the area. If you have friends or family visiting and you want to treat them to a high-class Indian meal this is a great restaurant.

My sister and I took my mum here for her birthday yesterday none of us had ever been but heard good things and those good things were an understatement, the service was amazing, the food was amazing and the restaurants it set was beautifully decorated on the inside. The waiters were attentive, helpful and kept us laughing.

Heard good reviews so thought we would give it a try as out previous favourite Indian had closed down. Was shown Menu which did not include all the old favourite dishes, just Specials and Chef recommendations which were expensive. You had to ask for a Madras. A lot of people would not automatically do this, assuming that it would not be available, as it is not on the menu. When the Madras arrived it was very poor compared with the previous favourite restaurant even though it was £5 more expensive. Food colouring was also used which I do not like. The other special dish was no better. This restaurant purports to offer a Indian fine dining experience but falls way short of this. To summarise it is very overpriced and over-rated. We will not return and are still seeking a replacement locally for our old favourite.

Disappointed with the takeaway, it tasted like a generic curry sauce and was runny and just not very nice. Didn't finish it, won't go back. Note that there is a seperate restaurant to the takeaway. I can't comment in the restaurant, it may be lovely, but the poor curry from the takeaway from the same business, doesn't make me want to try it in a hurry.

First time to this much acclaimed resturant. Cant wait to return. Perfect food and service lovely environment.

Me and my partner decided to go to Ruby’s for a meal this Saturday. Just have to say from entering to leaving was a fantastic evening . Service was exceptional and food was also exceptional . Flavours brilliant not your normal red tikka masala , spicing was brill. A place I will be back to soon

Revisited this popular restaurant and found the food to be just as good as it has always been, although not cheap. Unfortunately the service was not as good as I have experienced on previous visits. It has always in the past given the impression that you are eating in a quality restaurant, the staff were very smart and always available but not over bearing. This appears to have slipped slightly and resembled what I experience in run of the mill Indian restaurants. However we did have an enjoyable meal and I shall certainly be returning.

Went with the family for dinner. Fabulous food and so nice to have some different choices from the usual Indian selection. Many of the dishes are very spicy but delicious. Love the mashed potato with spring onion and chilli.

The meal is always absolutely delicious, we have never been let down yet and we have been many times with friends, family and alone as a couple for a romantic evening.

I’ve had quite a few takeaways from Ruby’s on Newtown Road and the food has always been spot on but I’ve never eaten in the restaurant before - Zara has always been my go to.

Booked a table about a month before because an experience a couple of months before, which was positive (it was previously a booking for two). This time however it wasn't good. Food was ok (just, nothing special) but expensive, £9 for 6 poppadom, £7 for small glass of housewine. £30 for a main course, rice, a 3/4 bottle of water and 1 poppadoms with v little chutneys)

I really can't understand how anyone can give this place any less than full marks, my wife and I paid Ruby's a visit and had a fantastic evening.. The staff were attentive and the food come out in a very reasonable time.. I dont like to receive my food to quick as I like to enjoy the atmosphere of a place.

Ordered once before from Ruby’s and the food was ok but just had another takeaway and the food was awful. The chicken korai barely had any chicken in it and you couldn’t differentiate between the vegetable curry and the chicken korai. They all looked the same! I’ve never seen a Brussel sprout in a curry either! Worst curry I’ve ever had the misfortune of trying and trust me I know my curry!

Never written a review for anywhere before but I had to for this place. Went last night for the first time. Felt very welcome from the off. Excellent menu with lots of choice. Drinks and poppadoms came quickly from the cheerful waiter. Main meals arrived quickly, on warm plates and everything was hot(temp). I had the special tandoori mixed balti, matar paneer, mushroom rice and keema naan. My wife had the byriani wrapped in a naan bread. All were absolutely delicious, loads of flavour. Great service from both waiters throughout. Definitely recommend.

Came here with friends as we’d heard some good feed back about the Resturant. We arrived quite early, which was nice for a first visit as the staff were able to explain some of the dishes, and also things that weren’t on the menus but they would happily make for us. The staff are all really nice and nothing is too much trouble for them. Now to the important bit, none of us could fault our food. It was all very well presented, and we were not disappointed with any of our dishes. We will definitely be going again, but maybe a bit later next time. A big thank you to everyone at Ruby’s.

Wow I had heard Ruby’s was good but for some reason I had never visited. Well I wish I had visited earlier. We were here to celebrate a birthday and had the most amazing meal.

Lovely setting. Friendly staff. Overpriced food. Too expensive for a curry. The same food 50 yards away half the cost. Wouldn’t rush back.

We always get our takeaways from here, never had a bad one, we thought we go in and try the restaurant, atmosphere was good, we sat down, service was a bit slow, food came out, and we felt like we was rushed to go home, management didn’t really bother when I told him about that. Maybe it’s time to look for another local curry house.

Ruby’s is a step up for your typical ‘Indian’ restaurant with a variety of region dishes that I recommend you try, I had the Sylheti Gosht Falgun a spicy tamirind sauce with lamb, it was awesome. The atmosphere is fairly calm considering how busy it gets. Definitely book, a friend and I went without a booking and had to wait for a table, fortunately we sat in the bar with a few beers.

Great to have lots of gluten free options. No ill effects so happy the food was ok! Lovely food really recommend and will be going back

Fresh ingredients, awesome food just a little short of ‘gluten free’. Had a great meal in the restaurant and the takeaways before. This time we chose delivery and was promised ‘all curries are gluten free’ not the case. Both had sore tummies but amazing food. Hope that they tighten up on this. Glad it wasn’t a peanut allergy.

We had a wonderful family celebration meal here. The food is top quality and served with style. Even though we were a large froup [9 of us] they coped with us admirably. My only slight criticism is I would have liked more prawn dishes to chose from, Apart from that, it is highly recommended & we will be going back.
