The best Indian Restaurant in Hertford!

We came here on the recommendation from a friend and wish we found Ruby sooner. We were warmly greeted by Khukon who made great suggestions for the dishes and thereafter ensured we had a lovely meal. The food was supeb, no other way to describe it. Beautiful linen table cloths and napkins, crockery and cuttlery simply added to a lovely meal. The restaurant had a great atmoshere, albeit early evening. All the staff were attentive, friendly and professional. It's my turn to highly recommend the Ruby.

Recently visited for a company away day, the Ruby staff were excellent, catering for our group of 20+ we received a 5 star service all around and that's before mentioning the amazing food! Not knowing which dish to go for I was recommended the chefs special which was delicious. Highly recommend, will visit again!

Recently hosted my mother and father In-laws Ruby anniversary celebrations and what can I say about Naz , Sam, and the whole team?… simply perfect. Food was outstanding. Service and attention to detail was fantastic. They made sure we were very well looked after from the bar tenders to the waiters to the chefs and any special requests were catered too. The whole team were just brilliant from start to finish. Thank you again for a fantastic night and keep up the brilliant work guys.

We arrived without a reservation and by the time we had a drink in the bar they had a table ready considering how busy it was , the service was efficient the food tasty and great atmosphere. Highly recommended

I visited Ruby this evening and was blown away by the incredible flavors! As someone who lives in London and has tried many Indian restaurants, I can honestly say I’ve never had Indian food like this before. I stumbled upon this gem by chance and am so glad I did. Every dish was delicious, and the spices were perfectly balanced. The staff was friendly and attentive, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The decor was amazing, adding to the overall ambiance of the restaurant. They even have a waiting area with a bar and garden, which makes for a great spot to relax before your meal. I’m already looking forward to my next visit. Highly recommend this place to anyone craving authentic Indian cuisine!

This has to have been one of the best curries I've had outside London. We had a chicken jalfrezi, lamb karahi, brinjal bhaji and some plain naan. I recommend all of the dishes, they were all great. The naan was cooked so well, brushed with salted butter, incredibly fresh. The staff were really friendly too, we talked with one of them for about 5 minutes about their naan making process. I can't recommend this place enough.

Sammy is legend, goes above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. All staff are friendly and have smiles on their faces. Food is amazing a true authentic Indian experience (cooked by Bangladeshis). Fully booked on Friday and Saturday night makes complete sense.

Awful! As I group of 16 we were told we could have a normal menu. On the night, only once we were all seated, we were told it had to be a set menu. The set menu just had a list of dishes, no description, so we needed up having to Google them, as there wasn’t a staff member in sight. There were also no veg options. The food took an hour, and then chicken dish I ordered had very little chicken in it, which it made the wait for it even worse. The service was none existent, hence us using to Google to identify the dishes, have to ask for separate veg menus, go and find staff to take coffee orders. No offer of any desserts. The coffee was so old and stale we sent it back, it was undrinkable! When we asked for the bill, they had charged a service charge, for a very below par service. The food was over priced for what was delivered, and generally a very disappointing experience.

Our first experience (a takeaway) wasn’t great but have since had brilliant meals in the restaurant with delicious food and service. Looking forward to visiting again soon!

We travelled into Hertford for the weekend and found this restaurant on the web as we were not familiar with the area. From the moment I telephoned to book our table for two the service and reception was outstanding. We arrived in good time for the seating and received a very warm welcome at the door, we were offered drinks in the bar area then when we were ready we were shown to our table. The food we could not fault in any way, it was so delicious and served with great service and the servings plentiful and a great amount of choice . The building is quaint but not small, with beamed ceilings and the atmosphere was very enjoyable. The staff paid a particular interest in our reason for visiting and made us feel very welcome and not just a number. Sammy was so helpful and friendly he deserves a mention here too. Even the ladies room was immaculate. Just a shame we do not live near to the restaurant or we would frequent this restaurant often, we do hope to make the effort to return in the future even if we have to arrange an overnight stay, it is worth it. By far the best Indian Restaurant I have ever been to. Disappointing. Butter chicken tasted like coconut chicken and not like any butter chicken I have tasted before. King Prawn jalfrezi at £19 had 4 prawns in it and the vegetable curry side dish consisted of I would say 2 quarters of a new potato and the rest was onions and sauce. The dishes are expensive and quite frankly o don’t think the quality justifies the cost. I had a chicken naga which was nice and spicy but the chicken tasted a bit dry. We usually buy from a different restaurant but I didn’t want to collect and had always been told Rubys was really good. I will definitely be driving to collect in the future! Sorry Rubys!! ‘In response to your response Rubys I have removed the restaurants name because my review was not about promoting another restaurant but about the quality of food from yours which you neglected to respond to!’

The inside of the restaurant was lovely however the food wasn't great.

The Ruby is a wonderful restaurant, beautifully decorated, fabulous menu with a huge choice of absolutely excellent dishes, staff are super professional and highly efficient. Great all round restaurant, who can easily cater for large parties, I’d totally recommend to anyone who enjoys Indian food, it’s delicious. Thanks to all the staff who catered for my sons birthday bash, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it x

Food was really very good indeed. 5 adults. Ages from 50-70. Various tastes. Vegetarian, pescatarian and carnivores all very well catered for. Attentive service, but not overly pushy. Cheerful atmosphere. All round fantastic evening to catch up with friends.

Only ordered for collection however the staff is very attentive and you can see they definitely care about the food they make! We got loads of stuff and it was all amazing, will definitely order again. 😁

The food has gone down hill since I was there last. All the dishes were very dry and not much taste. Disappointing.

Our first visit to Hertford and loved it, we dropped on this beautiful restaurant whilst looking for somewhere to eat, and so glad we did. Absolutely delicious food, staff helpful and friendly, taking the time to chat. I can honestly say it was the best Curry I've ever had. We had the most amazing private dinning experience at the Ruby for a family birthday. From start to finish we were made to feel incredibly welcome, all of our needs were taken care of, and the food was outstanding and full of flavour and variety. Even members of our group who are not typically fans of Indian cuisine couldn't stop complimenting the dishes. There really was something for everyone and our waiter for the night, Samie, really pulled all the stops to make this evening one we would never forget. It's always lovely discovering family run businesses that take such pride in quality and customer experience, and the Ruby does just that! We will definitely be back again and can't thank the full team, Samie and his Dad Naz (owner) for really making us feel at home and treating us with such grace! Thank you

Top notch lamb pasanda, very generous with the amount of lamb in the sauce.

Dined here with two friends yesterday and I have to say this is the best curry house I have ever been too. It is truly fantastic. Freshly made breads, delicately spiced mains that don't leave you with cumin farts and dodgy guts the next day. Just the right amount of heat and depth of flavour. I wish I lived nearer as I would eat here a couple of times a week. A truly special restaurant with great staff and a friendly owner. They have also won more awards than you can shake a stick at. It was just a shame that Neil from Stevenage couldn't attend and blew us all out again.

Restaurant nicely decorated Quiet and not much atmosphere Service ok The onion bhaji starter seemed not fresh and reheated from earlier so dry Was not freshly made The main course nice but not much chicken in it . Around half a chicken breast. Never understand why a main course costing £12 or more cannot contain at least a good chicken breast worth of meat ( £6 a kg ) Sauce was good with it Nan bread quite small and £4-50 so bit expensive

Some of the staff were rushing us to order & shooing us out of the restaurant the moment they could, leaving us feeling very unwelcome. On top of that, the food was extremely mediocre, despite being very expensive for what it was, and once we asked for it to be taken away, it looked as though they threw half the food or ate it, leaving us with dregs. Worst Indian I’ve been to in years. Never again.

Consistently amazing. We visited this evening to celebrate our sons 13th birthday. Ali, Khu Kon and the rest of the team couldn't do enough for us. I had the duck Byriyani, hubby had the Naz special, reccomended by Khu Kon both dishes were so tasty & flavoursome. Our son asked for his usual, plain chicken tikka with cucumber, cooked to perfection for a fussy eater, no wonder its his favourite restaurant. Thank you for a wonderful evening, great food & brilliant service!

Great food, great staff and all round nice place if you’re in for a curry

The service is fantastic. However the food is a bit of a letdown and one of the poorer Indian meals we have had, being underseasoned and not very flavorsome. Also being charged for poppadoms and chutney was an eye opener, never been charged for those before especially when waiting for the main meal.

Excellent food and service throughout our meal

My first experience at this restaurant was when I bought a take away. The quality and taste of the food was what brought myself and my husband back here for a spontaneous date. We felt welcome from the second we entered, we were greeted, seated and served right away. The staff were very helpful as they explained some of the dishes we were curious about; we were not disappointed at all with what came out. Our starters and mains were fresh, full of flavour and hot! To our surprise one of the dishes that we ordered was delivered to us with a little brandy flame show which was mesmerising to watch (not to mention the amazing smells). Overall I would rate our experience 100 out of 10. Wishing Sam and his team the best of luck, but it doesn't seem like they need it. This team has it under control.

In my opinion and my 60 years experience of dining in Indian restaurants in England I thought I found in Ruby’s the only genuinely cooked food left in restaurants and pubs in this country, until I dined there yesterday. The ambience is nice and restaurant clean and there were many waiters around. Sadly I was disappointed with the food, it looked and tasted like it was pre cooked or pre prepared.. Something has changed in their kitchen and I did not have a good meal this time. I’m not sure if it had changed hands or had different policies implemented. Having doubled up and ordered enough to take away some, the packaging was terrible, rice dumped with sauces to save packaging perhaps ? Some meals were even missing. Sorry but I had to bin it.

Extremely poor service. Arrived and were told a table would be approximately 10 minutes and we were asked if we would like to order a drink. We ordered 2 beers, however one gentleman came down stairs complaining he hadn’t received a drink he had ordered. After waiting for a while another couple arrived and the bar staff ignored our order and after along wait we decided to leave.

Amazing place. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. The menu is huge … maybe too big but they accommodate everything and anything. We’ve used for private catering too. We have eaten there as a group of ten and they have a brilliant round table for everyone to share. Not crowded at all

I've eaten inside the restaurant twice, and both times it was absolutely lovely. Some of the best Indian food I've ever had. I've also ordered takeaway twice, and both times it was bloody grim. Watery, flavourless curries, tough-as-leather meat and slimy vegetables. I really don't understand what the difference is when they make it, but for the prices they charge it's totally unacceptable to sell food that bad. I think I'll be giving them a miss going forward, there are plenty of other good Indian restaurants in the area.

Great food. Terribly slow service and we had to chase them up to find out where our orders were.

Website says they deliver in 60 minutes, 1 hour 30 minutes later we called them. They said they were busy and would be with us in 10 minutes. Food arrived 40 minutes after the call, over 2 hours after the order was placed. Some of the dishes were nice but the lamb dishes were awful, chewy and bland. No apologies for being so late and average to poor food. No idea why the get such positive reviews.

Great restaurant: been a few times. Food is very tasty, lovely building and the staff are awesome. My wife wasn’t feeling well on the evening of our recent visit (nothing to do with restaurant) and the staff and manager were so very kind looking after her after she fainted. Genuinely kind and caring. Thanks!

Food amazing! Customer service is perfect! love the atmosphere they have created definitely worth a visit I first visited Ruby 6 years ago and it's still a form favourite date night. I hope the Ruby never changes!!

Really attentive and friendly staff in a lovely atmosphere and food that we had never had before was incredible. Our vegetarian friend who ate a starter only was served first which was awkward. After chatting with staff they didn't charge us that dish (which we *all* ate) and created a new one to be served with everybody else's mains. Couldn't have asked for better service and I look forward to returning another day. Dhan'yabada

Really good food and service, we had a group of 12 for a work function, service was prompt and all food was served together on request. I had the chicken palok, which was marinated in ginger and garlic and served with lentils, as a main. Everything came out to our expectations, with the visual appeal of the curried lamb shanks being a highlight!

Never had a bad meal here and that was very much the case on my latest visit. Everything done well and service always very attentive. Relatively quiet but then went early on a Wednesday evening. Would suggest booking especially at peak times as this place is very popular and with good reason.

Booked a table a month in advance which was confirmed by the restaurant directly, to then 10 days later them cancelling it due to nothing available. Feel that they probably had a bigger booking since winning their award and now don't care about the locals

Absolutely Awesome experience and food. Everything was delicious, bar one dish and that was Paneer based and wasn't to my liking. Portion size was very good, we thought the price was justifiable.
