Top rate Sunday lunch. Excellent, tasty food. Between us, we had the rare roast beef, chicken, and tofu pie. I'd never had this vegetarian dish before and wasn't sure what to expect - really delicious. Great service. Thoroughly recommended. We'll certainly be back.

A traditional Sussex pub which does food, there are the usual pub classics and a specials board and the portions are always a good size. If it's the right time of year you might be lucky and find they are doing venison bourguignon. We've always had a warm welcome from the staff, and there's usually an open fire in the winter. In the summer it's popular with groups from the various glamping sites nearby so I would recommend booking for food.

A strange mixed-bag experience. Bombay skewers were great but ploughman's was really poor - bread had been cut some time ago and was hard; whilst there was a pickled onion, no relish/pickle was provided; the sliced apple was yellowing and again presumably cut earlier in the day. The guy serving was 'bitching' to locals about people turning up on spec without a reservation if 6 or more but the place was only a third full. Seemed like the kitchen didn't/couldn't cope with tables over 4 people. Toilets were clean but of a style that time forgot....

Visited this fabulous pub on the way back from Sheffield Park Gardens, there was four of us (two couples) we had Scampi, stuffed field mushrooms with goats cheese, chicken pesto and lemon dressed salad and sauté potatoes and breaded Brie. We could not fault the food at all, was beautifully cooked, tasted amazing and at a really good price. The staff members were lovely too, wish I had taken their names, we sat outside but did use the toilets which were very clean and tidy. We will definitely go back again in the very near future as there’s so much more on the menu I need to try! If you’re looking for a proper English country pub with gorgeous food and lovely staff you won’t go wrong if you visit here!

A very disappointing experience for Father’s Day and Sunday lunch. Service was unfriendly to start with. There was then no veggie option for the Sunday roast other than having potato’s and vegetables, it’s 2024! We were then charged the price of a full roast even though the most expensive part of the meal we didn’t order…. Not a place I would recommend at all, the atmosphere seemed very flat and service was very amateur.

This is a friendly and authentic local pub. Great classic pub food - not trying to do too much but doing it well. We had a delicious prawn cocktail starter followed by a roast beef baguette and chips. Fish and chips was fabulous - light batter and fresh fish. Everything tasty and nicely presented. Good selection of drinks at the bar and charming and efficient staff.

Very poor food, overpriced, do not eat here. Very clever of the chef to produce chips that are burnt on the outside yet rock hard inside. There was more oil in the cod than cod. I tried to feed a bit of the beef burger to a dog that was allowed to wander over to my table. The dog wouldn’t eat it.

We sat down in a restaurant area with 2 other people and our server was pleasant and friendly. She allowed us 10 minutes to look at the menu and then took our order. A party of 5 or 6 came in after us as well as some people who wanted to eat in the bar. Our main came after about 15 minutes and we were impressed at the fact we didn’t have to wait long despite the amount of customers that had arrived. The food was lovely, we both had Liver and Bacon, and at that point we considered we had picked well. Our plates took a while to clear, which was to be expected, but this is where it all fell down. We never saw our server again, much less be asked if we would like dessert. We tried to catch her eye but she never looked our way. She went to each table asking if things were okay, but it was as if we were invisible. She kept disappearing in the kitchen for 5 minutes at a time so we couldn’t even go up to her and ask. We went to the busy bar to pay our bill after 25 minutes, and despite the nice main, left feeling we would not return. A pity.

We took my mum out for her birthday and the food was mediocre. 2 steaks were ok but chips were frozen and then looked liked cooked and then cooked again not really edible. The mussels were over cooked and tough and sauce had no real flavour, very disappointing. Mentioned that they were over cooked and just a ‘sorry’. Starter of crab and prawn mix on toast was crab sticks shredded for £8.50 thought this was really overpriced. Such a shame as a nice village pub but won’t be returning.

Booked for Sunday lunch with 80 year old mother with walking stick and small children for 1230. Pub emailed and said would I change to 1215 as small kitchen. Agreed to help them out so rearranged can to get there in time. One waitress sat us down. Manager asked us to get up again as said no booking. I explained they had emailed us to eat early. Towards end of meal I was informed that it was only 2 hour booking. I paid the bill and we had finished by 215 awaiting 5 year old to return from bathroom. At 217 the Manager insisted we relocate to seat her next booking (so that’s why our time was moved earlier). I explained we had finished and would be a couple of minutes awaiting my 5 year olds return. Manager shouted at us to move from across restaurant. Staff turned rude and surly. Leaning across us to wipe the table. Happy to take £80 though. Incredibly obnoxious manager - a horrible experience. And the lamb was tough.

I’ve eaten at the Oak twice in recent times with large groups, the food being that good we decided to return there. There is always such a great choice on the specials board with a variety of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes; there’s always something to please everyone. My examples were a beef suet pie; the meat was melt in the mouth tender with a deliciously crispy pie crust and vegetables cooked to perfection. The second time I opted for the pork belly in a cider cream sauce - absolutely delicious, the meat was so tender. I only wish I could cook like this! I look forward to dining here again soon and trying some of the lovely fish dishes, or doing what one friend did by having a couple of starters: crispy tempura prawns followed by the kidneys in red wine on a garlic crust for a main. There is always such a lovely selection of dishes way beyond the pub grub remit, furthermore the quality of the food and prompt, friendly service makes the Royal Oak a destination foodie pub.

Quick lunchtime beer and a baguette, superb. I used to be a local here but moved away, however I was back in the area today so popped in. Such a lovely pub, fabulous warm greeting from Beryl behind the bar, and also a couple of locals I knew. Plus as all locals know, the Harvey’s Best At the oak is literally the best. My pint today was exactly that, unbeatable. Feeling a bit peckish so I ordered a prawn baguette with Marie Rose sauce. Also delightful, and I kid you not, enough prawns to feed two people! I struggled to finish it, although I did get offers of help from a couple of locals in there😊😊. The Oak has always been a great pub under Beryl’s wing, it remains the same to this day and it was a pleasure to visit again. In Arnold’s words “I will return”….

In the village of Newick there are two good pubs, the Bull and the Royal Oak. Both have a lot to offer although the Royal Oak does seem to attract a slightly older clientele suited us as we wanted somewhere quiet for an evening meal and a good pint! The food and drink was excellent and the pub is slightly further away from the A272 so one does not have to look at heavy traffic. The only slight downside which is not unique to this pub, is the costs of drinks; it is understandable and the pressure must be on pubs when supermarkets are selling quality ales for £1 per bottle. However if you are looking for a warm welcome and nice food then the Royal Oak shoul dnot disappoint.

First time in this Pub, so we made a booking for a Saturday night. When we arrived at 7.0 pm, there were a few people at the bar (and a very large dog!) but nobody else eating, so we got to choose a good table. A very pleasant member of staff took our order and admired my face painting, saying she was the sort of person who would go out with a painting too. (I am a face painter and had been working, so always paint my own face: it's called advertising!). I had Crispy Duck off the specials menu and my husband had liver and bacon, one of his favourites. Meanwhile, four people (2 couples approx. our age) took the next table to ours. My husband went to the bar whilst we waited for the food and asked for a jug of water and two glasses. In due course, the lady behind the bar (who may have been the Licencee, I think) brought over the jug and two glasses and took them to the next door table, saying "Here you are, are you sure you only want two glasses?" They were somewhat surprised, but said they would take the water plus two more glasses. We realised that she had made a muddle, so as she passed us, my husband said: "Don't forget us" whereupon she said: "Oh, would you like water as well?". I laughed and said: "It was my husband who came and asked you!" Obviously, all elderly men look the same to this lady! Anyway, water and food arrived in due course. My duck was excellent, with lovely crispy onion and sliced, roasted potatoes, and my husbands liver and bacon serving was huge - and he said very delicious. I could not finish all the duck and potato and asked the serving lady whether I could have a "doggy bag". She was somewhat hesitant and said that "she" (presumably the chef) was not very happy about sending "her food" out of the pub, but she would do what she could. However, she came back with a small, silver foil parcel and a big smile. And I have since finished my meal at home, and thoroughly enjoyed my second helping! At the bar, the big dog had gone to be replaced by another, very friendly dog who visited everyone to make friends. We could not manage pudding, but wished we could, because the choice was so good. We will certainly go back to this rather fun pub, which likes dogs, is not stuffy and which serves excellent food.

Last evening we ate at The Oak for the first time, and I’m sorry to say we won’t be back. The food was tasty and well presented for a village pub, but the service we received from the waitress had much to be desired. Having enjoyed many good meals here since the change of ownership, I was really disappointed with the service I received today. As someone with a small appetite I initially asked the waitress which meals were available as smaller portions, to which she replied "depends what you want". I asked if I could have a small fish and chips but if this was not possible then I would like a small ham, egg & chips. She then said (rather brusquely) "well, which do you want?" I said I would prefer the f&c; if possible. When it arrived it was full size. Whilst the meal itself was excellent, with lovely crispy batter and tasty chips, it was far too much for me and resulted in me leaving half. Both the waitress and the barman said it was not possible to have smaller size fish & chips, but having visited not long ago when different staff were on duty we were served 'small' f&c.; I resented having to pay £13 for something half eaten when I had made it very clear from the outset I only wanted a smaller sized meal.

I’m a regular at the Royal Oak. It holds a special place in the village with its almost perfect country pub vibe and over the last year quite a bit of money has been spent on it - although it has fortunately avoided the dreaded modernisation other pubs sadly go through and retains that old world charm - perfect. The kitchen has been through many changes over the years and more so recently, with chefs changing more frequently that I can keep up with. It seems it is pot luck as to whether there will be food at all sometimes. When there is, I think it can be good but I can’t take the risk anymore. Hopefully someone can take note of this and bring some continuity both in terms of personnel and menu. Also worth noting the prices which are a getting bit steep in most pubs nowadays and are no different here. Bring back good old simple, down to earth and consistent, home cooked pub food and let restaurants charge the higher prices for ever changing menus and rafts of special dishes - after all, they pay teams of highly trained chefs to produce it.

Went here for an evening meal with friends. It was Thursday evening so steak and a bottle of wine for two for £30 so gave it a go. First let me say that the pub gives off a great atmosphere with friendly staff and a nicely decorated restaurant area at one end of the pub. However, the service we received was slow and at one point we had to go to the bar to find someone to take our food order. We ordered drinks from the bar but they never arrived until requested a second time. I understand about being short staffed but either do not take bookings or resolve the matter but don't place customers in a position where they are unhappy. Steak was a choice of sirloin or rib eye. Two had sirloin and two rib eye. All I can say is that the steaks must have been cut in half to make them thinner in the kitchen. It was like eating minute steak they were so thin which of course meant they were tough and rubbery. Excellent chips and side salad though. Desserts were also very good but over priced compared with other restaurants and pubs and whilst nice they were not spectacular. I would go back and eat there again giving the landlord the benefit of the doubt that this was a one off bad evening but there has to be some improvement to make me write a better review next time. Disappointed because its a nice village pub with so much potential.

So where do I start. Fancied an evening meal so chose the ploughman's - 'a selection of cheese with a baguette' and the usual salad + pickles at £10. Should be a handsome spread at that price. After all all the chef has to do is put some stuff on a plate. What did I get for my £10? The baguette comprised two bits of french bread 75mm long and the selection of cheeses comprised two pieces of cheddar weighing, at most, an ounce each. Add to this a small handful of leaves, two pickled onions and a small pot of Branston pickle. Less than a £1 of ingredients. I forgot to mention the two pats of butter and a sprinkling of tiny gherkins and capers but still under a £1. I asked the waitress (woman that brought the food out) where my selection of cheese was and 15 minutes later was told that I could have chosen cheddar or stilton when I ordered - news to me but still probably rationed to 2 ounces. This is an appalling rip off and the people that own the place should be embarrassed. Never returning and advise others to go elsewhere.

The new management took over in February and happily have redeemed the previous excellent reputation of the Oak. We were a party of three on a Wednesday lunchtime and as the 'Specials' board was rather limited we all opted for fish & chips. Cooked to perfection with crispy batter and delicious chunky chips, served with peas, tartare sauce and lemon wedge. One of my friends requested baked beans instead of peas, which was no problem. We each chose different desserts: one rhubarb crumble with custard; one lemon cheesecake with cream; and one treacle tart, normally served with ice cream or cream but again my friend asked for custard instead - no problem! The young waitress was very helpful and friendly, as was the young lady behind the bar and we were made to feel very welcomed and very much at home! Although it was mid-week it was good to see other people dining again. It's good to have our 'local' back!

We went with friends and understood that the place had only recently opened. We had a starter of olives and bread. Small olives and some heated rolls. Adequate but nothing more. Trio of local sausages followed and these were almost as small as the olives and not over tasty. The lamb shank was ok but over cooked in parts. The vegetables were mainly baby carrots all the same size under cooked and tasteless. It's not hard to cook tasty carrots add some sugar to the water add butter and herbs. Simples. Chips were good. Very cold and not much atmosphere. Servers were very good and attentive.

This pub has recently been taken over by new ownership. It has a warm welcoming feel when you walk in with a lovely open fire. We went for dinner and our meal was fantastic. The staff are friendly and attentive. Will be returning very soon. I wish the new owners all the best.

Supper with a couple of friends in the early evening. I chose the pie which was a proper pie and not a dish of stew with a puff pastry lid stuck on the top. Top marks for that. The beer was good and the price about average. You have to go to the bar to order which involves pushing past the locals but it is a pub that serves food so you cannot really complain. Worth another trip.

Went to the Royal Oak with a couple of friends last night, to be honest as our preferred local was closed for a private event. Five other people in there, on a Friday night, and a very sombre atmosphere. In the main (right hand) bar there are only two ‘pub’ tables, everything else was laid out like a cafe with cutlery and napkins. Not very welcoming. We drank up and walked up the The Bull which was rammed and buzzing. Real shame as the Oak used to be such a busy pub.

Having seen how sadly downhill the Royal Oak had descended in the more recent past which necessitated my poor review of a few months ago, I was tempted to visit again as they had advertised a new menu. What a pleasant surprise. There is now a full menu + the 'specials' board - pub food at pub prices - and even an all-day breakfast. It was also nice to see the same waitress who has been there for many years!

This pub has received some bad press lately but I can honestly say that the current landlords are trying soooo hard to make the best of what they have got....... Visited today on the tractor run (which the landlady had organised pretty much single handed) and was so lovely and welcoming. I hope the locals can see past the change in the way it is run and support what is a lovely country pub. #useitorloseit.

6 of us visited this pub for drinks and am i glad it was just drinks, as it was a warm day we went outside to sit in the beer garden BIG MISTAKE what should have been a nice area to sit was covered in dog poo, and i mean covered it must not have been cleaned for a week.and what a shame because if the dogs were not allowed to do their business all over it would have been a pleasent area to sit and have a drink.

First of all, I was waiting at the bar for 15 mins watching beryl do all the work while the new blonde bar lady with short hair just stood and spoke for ages to an individual instead of serving customers...poor beryl! After finally catching the new bar ladies attention I ordered my drinks and food. The food took a very long time to come, i had one bite of my chips and they tasted as if the oil hadn't been changed in months and they were also a murky brown colour. I am very saddened by this as everything was just perfect a couple months back...!!

We popped in for a quick pub lunch. It wasn't very busy but despite only ordering a Bacon, Brie and cranberry baguette and duck with cherry sauce. It took ages to arrive. When it did, the baguette was a cheap reheated one and not fresh bread. The bacon was cold, fatty and greasy and cheese wasn't melted. Who knew it was so difficult to make a baguette in 40min. The duck tasted like it was reheated and was gooey. Sauce had a cherries in, but it didn't taste anything like cherries. To add insult to injury, no one bothered to check whether we need anything or check everything was ok.However the best was yet to come. Within half a hour or leaving the restaurant, my stomach started to make some very strange noises. Without going to much details, it was a very fast drive back home. This pub was deleted from our list of places to visit and recommend.

Great little pub in a quintessential village setting. No one could dispute the village setting (iddillic), the quality of the ales, the pub and its staff but was a let down by the retro food. This was a shame for a little effort the menu could be elevated rather than in a time warp of a not so good time of pub food. If however, your after a thumping good pub and settle for bar snacks there are few better.

Haven't eaten at the Oak in Newick for some time for one reason or another (including the picture here on Tripadvisor!) but decided to give it a go this weekend. The meal was really good with a great selection of nicely cooked veg and some really tasty pork topped with a massive yorkshire pudding. If only there had been some nice mustard rather than the little sachets of burger style stuff it would have been perfect. I hear the lamb is amazing so will be returning very soon!

Have eaten here many times before and previously reviewed (almost a year ago to the day!) but I had a meal on Saturday night that will go down as one of the worst I’ve ever had. Staff were really nice about my (polite) complaint and took the cost of my meal off the bill but I was so very disappointed. I suspect there has been a change in staff. I won’t rule out trying again as I hope it was just a ‘one off’ but it did spoil an otherwise lovely evening. What a contrast to my last review!

Visited today for lunch on entering the pub the guy at the bar was busy playing a game on his phone and ignored us for a few minutes, tables not laid up ready for lunch we sat ourselves down and began to read through the menu, bar man who had a cold by the many time that he snorted the snot back up his nose rather than go and blow his nose!!! We ordered our food and waited for it to arrive, we sat listening to the staff in the bar and kitchen swearing and talking loudly, When our food arrived OMG is all I can say the soup was a watery mess and my scampi was foul more like cheap food when i looked under the batter i found meat more like foam!! chips under cooked all just rank, what a shame as this used to be such a nice little pub we wont be returning!!

After a long day, ate supper here in Dec 2016.Had just one dish, sirloin steak with pepper sauce.Came with sauté potatoes, carrots, broccoli and peas.Substantial helping, but I was starving and finished it.Steak was lush!! Just the ticket.... Nice rind of fat on the sirloin and as tender as you could wish. Pepper sauce quite mild but very enjoyable.Plenty of veg too.£14 - and worth every penny.I will return.

Very good food and excellent gluten free selection. Only trouble was the staff's insistence on calling us all 'loveley', 'dear' 'my love' and other ghastly terms of affection which apart from being very patronising, felt very odd and forced coming from people in their 20s (many decades younger than us). I commented on this when i orderd our food and we were then treated to a deluge of such language by the waiting staff. Why do people have to be so patronising and unpleasant? A definite reason not to go there too often.
