Sadly this place has had a succession of managers who haven't been able to get it off the ground, however I now think this couple have started to turn the pub around. They have a small menu at the moment during the week plus Sunday lunch. Nick and Dot are hard working and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Yesterday with friends we tried the home made cheese and onion and the mince beef pies, both were delicious, will definitely be eating there more often. The pub is also dog and walker friendly and there is seating outside.

We have used this pub for many years but it has had its ups and downs, more downs would I say. We have even been kicked out by previous owners who didnt have a clue, the last lot lasted a few weeks and now oh yes now I am very hopeful. They have not been in long, seem to keep good beer and have a small menu of about 4 items (ignore the phote of the menu}but it is homed cooked and the cheese pie was lovely. Best food we have eaten in there for some time. So I am hopeful. We will try more of the food week by week and review again

Going past with my wife and thought we would stop for a beer. The beer it's self was very drinkable and the pub very homely BUT . When we went in there were three men stood at the bar and we got our drinks and sat around the corner from the bar but we could easily hear the foul language that was coming out of their mouths F ing this and F ing that . Now I am not a snob but I do not use language like that in front of my wife and would not use language like that in front of their wives it is time that they realised that it is a public house and not a building site. The pub I would give 3 stars the clientele aren't worth commenting on

A group of Canasta players have patronised this pub for many years and some have eaten there for many years through its management ups and downs. Alas no more we have been removed cos we don't drink enough. Many are pensioners and only have one drink in the two hours. 4.or 5 of us have eaten there for years and have bills of £20 to £25 per couple most weeks. Alas they don't want our trade so we bid Farewell. Would love to see who is going to replace us.

The burger, priced at a hefty £8.95 was a 'handmade' and tiny burger on a cheap shop bought roll. The chips, chunky and deep fried, not long enough the first time around, and a side of coleslaw that didn't seem all that appetising. Having complained about the quality I was told "you got what you asked for. It comes with either chips or salad and that's what you got." legally correct, morally questionable. You pay that price you want something tasty and edible. By the time it came back with cooked chips the burger was hard, the bun solid in places and a limp salad chucked on as an appeaser The soup of the day, a can of soup and a slice of really cheap bread. £5.95?! I will not be returning for food. That said, the Beer was good, the bar staff lovely.

Had a lovely home made meal at the Royal Oak Hotel. Myself and my mum had the fish and chips and it was lovely. All freshly battered in the kitchen. I'm so happy they serve gluten free battered fish because it's so hard to find some where that does a good tasty range of gluten free food. My little boy also loved the chicken nuggets made with proper chicken pieces. The landlord and landlady are so friendly and welcoming. Would definitely recommend a visit to this pub

The cold, washed out pale colour of the refurbished pub rather reflected the frostiness of, presumably, the landlady as we entered the restaurant on a Sunday. The three of us were just choosing from the prominently displayed blackboard menu by the bar, which looked very good. The frosty faced landlady (she never once smiled during our visit) barked "Sunday Lunch only!" with no apology for the fact they were displaying an alternative menu. That was a shame as we wanted to order from the inviting menu by the bar and didn't really want Sunday Lunch but decided to stay as we already had drinks. What a mistake! The meats were obviously not roasted and sliced on the premises, portions of meat and even the overcooked cabbage and carrots were by no means generous, although there were more of the lumpy mashed potato and flabby roast potatoes. It was all drowned in the most odd tasting gravy. To add insult to injury, on the next table to us they were being served sandwiches and chips although we had been told Sunday Roast only! Although the landlord tried hard to be friendly, this amateurish effort at Sunday Roast has left us not wanting to chance our luck to return to try the normal weekday menu.

Today is the 21st December, 2017. I agree completely with an earlier critic, who said that the Royal Oak was previously filthily horofic. Yes it was, and my wife and I stopped going there about 12 months ago. Today, however, after hearing that the management had changed, we called-in for lunch.

Crikey, what a place. We were both served with dirty glasses and took them back to the bar and was horrified to see the man who was apparently the landlord simply pour our drinks into two wet glasses straight off the draining board! One of those was dirty too but we didn't bother saying anything as the ogre behind the bar looked like he'd swallowed a wasp. Quick visit to the toilets on the way out and they were disgusting. AVOID.

It’s a shame really, used to be a decent place twenty years ago when I first started going in but now it’s just not the same. Feels soulless and every time I go in, it’s as dead as a door nail. The staff aren’t to blame for it, probably the company’s fault. Although the ale I ordered tasted like vinegar, I don’t expect to return.

Update November 2024: VERY sad to report that the pizza has gone downhill to the point where it's not fit for eating, but could however be used as ballistic plates in body armour. Couldn't cut it with the pizza cutter, or the knife and fork provided. Should have taken an electric bonesaw! Sent back and I refused replacement, as any chef who allowed THAT to leave his/her kitchen isn't fit for the job. Still no parmesan or herbs offered either! (End of 2024 update)Quite a nice pizza sadly spoiled by the use of fake cheese (clearly mentioned on the menu). Cooked to perfection. Service was fast and friendly, quite surprised that there wasn't an offer of parmesan and herbs for the pizza. The waitresses had everything under control even though it was fairly busy. Well worth a return visit.
