The absolute best Dim Sum outside of central London. Nothing comes close the delicate creativity of the dim sum

Nice View. Shame about the restaurant. The only person who smiled was the bar tender and the guy who brought the bill at the end. Starters were good. The mains were not. Mediocre and definitely overpriced. Decor is ok. Carpet is stained and disgusting. The worst however was the service. Waitress leaning past your face to lay the table or place food, when it’s a round table and she can walk around you, to access the whole table discreetly. Your written order is placed on your table and checked off as your dishes arrive. So crass. If it wasn’t for my friend who was taking us there for a treat, I’d have refused to pay the service charge. For an area like Canary Wharf, this restaurant is a shame.

The food and location was pretty decent and the price was about right for what was being served however, the customer service was truly atrocious. Staff barely said hello, no goodbyes or thank yous at the end either. When someone came to take our order, they were missing a few items so we had to think of another dish and the waitress just walked off. After finishing our meal nobody came to ask if we needed anything else. I had to go inside to ask to pay my bill. I was barely acknowledged and when I paid I thanked them but I got nothing back. It was a bizarre experience and I don’t think I will return as I felt so uncomfortable. Edit: it would appear that staff are pretty horrible to East Asian people.

I have very high expectations from this place as we used to come here every other weekend over a decade ago. It may be the company and nostalgia but I remember having great meals here. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Canary Wharf and the restaurant felt further from the station than I remember and probably than it actually is (and I used to work at Cabot Square). I went at a quiet time and the service was pleasant and attentive. The food was ok but not as good as I remembered. The dumpling casings were not soft and silky and the soup lacked depth. The prawn in the har cheong didn’t taste fresh. It’s all pleasant, I just have high expectations from Royal China. As with all dining experiences post covid, the bill was not cheap - just under £50 for 5 dim sum plates and a tea. Would return when in the area, though not go out of my way to visit.

Very disappointing dinner. Half Peking duck was just a very dry, oven baked duck with some pancakes, not much difference from you buy it from M&S. Nothing like the real thing with crispy skin and sliced. Dumpling in chilli sauce was just some thick-doled Shanghainese dumpling in a thin sweet soy sauce in some chilli. Nothing like the real thing. Salted fish and shredded chicken fried rice, lack of flavour. Kai Lan (Chinese broccoli) was pretty nice. Prawns in honey and black bean sauce also pretty nice. Overall, very disappointing food. The branch in Baker Street is much better. Service is good. We won’t be come back to this branch and would not recommend to anyone.

Newer content: Ken and his new staff are cordial and knowledgeable. Combined with the fabulous decor and the wonderful Cantonese dim sum, the ambience is delightful. A must visit restaurant if you love great food. New comment: The decor has been impressive. Very beautiful. Quality of the food is still there. The sad thing is the disappearance of some of the former staff. Old comment: Great service. Great food. Not too spicy. Very fresh. Kenny, Vicky and his staff are friendly and knowledgeable about Cantonese food. Their recommendations are great. It was a delightful experience for me and my 4 friends. I was very impressed. Great experience. Tolerable waiting time.

I recently dined at Royal, located just across the river from my hotel. Unfortunately, my visit left much to be desired. Here’s why: Both entrees 45 minutes to arrive. By the time they reached our table, the food was disappointingly cold. To add insult to injury, the staff insisted we pay for the uneaten food. Their reasoning? We supposedly took too long to complain about the temperature. In reality, the dish had been on our table for a mere 5 minutes. The saving grace was the Crispy Duck appetizer, which was surprisingly good. However, this lone bright spot couldn’t salvage the overall experience. I won’t be returning anytime soon.

An unforgettable experience , but not in a good way 🤬 . So we decided to take my parents to Royal China Canary Wharf for Dim Sum and lunch to celebrate my birthday , we have been there many times but never ever have i experienced such an absolute royal f**k up , so they basically forgot to cook half of our meal then went on their break , which became apparent when we noticed all their kitchen staff leaving to go on a fag break outside around halfway through our meal , we then waited over 40’mins before asking staff to check on our food , there response was any minute now , but all the kitchen staff are sat outside ! I’m not sure what they expected us to do but we were kept sat waiting at our table ,before we lost patience and asked the manager what was going on , again no explanation . We decided to cut our losses and told them we are leaving and paid for the dishes we had received . That apparently is perfectly normal and acceptable at Royal China. No effort was made to make amends or make things right . I was extremely disappointed especially on my birthday and this really impacted the rest of the day’s celebrations not only because we had wasted so much time waiting for food that they all knew would never arrive. I understand things like this can happen but to make no effort to make amends or offer any form of apology is incredible and I will never forget this experience and never done in any of your establishments again

Such a disappointment. Most of the food was no better than a high street takeaway, despite the much higher price. But the service was awful - we opted for a set menu (possibly a mistake) and I managed to ask “but could we substitute…” before the waiter just said “NO”. Even if that were the answer, it would have been courteous to have listened and responded politely. Then they rushed through, taking plates away whilst we were still eating - they clearly wanted us out asap. I definitely won’t go back.

I went to Royal China (Canary Riverside) for lunch more than a week ago. The restaurant environment, food quality, and waiter service were all very good, but I couldn't be more respectful towards the poor and hurried service attitude of the two male and female managers in black uniforms. . It was originally worth 4 to 5 stars, but ended up with only 1 star. I hope the boss will pay attention to the service attitude of the entire staff.

This restaurant deserves 0 stars. The food is okay but the waiters shout at you and gaslight you when you’ve been waiting 20 minutes and had the next number to be seated for the whole 20 minutes with a 2 week old and a 17 month toddler in tow. When confronting the waiter, I was asked to “go somewhere else” and he kept saying he can show me how everyone is seated - I said I don’t need to see you’ve done it poorly and randomly and kept a bunch of people waiting seating random people at the back of the queue who kept turning up. No apology, just telling me he won’t argue with me whilst he kept shouting at me in front of other customers. If you want lunch with a side of psychological abuse and humiliation then you might rank this 5 stars. They also dont have enough high chairs - I’ve been here with another family before and the staff shouted at us for requesting a second high chair as we have two toddlers because they needed to save them for other people who might need them. No explanation, again we were made to feel at fault so my husband went and got the chair himself. Our daughter cannot sit on a normal seat yet as she is too young. They also shouted at us at another time for asking to cancel one dish, they said we should think about things before we order … I mean people are also not allowed to change their minds apparently

This place deserves a zero star review if I could. The service is full of rather silly people who either have no sense of structure and the way they seat people is ridiculous. They were letting random people in at random times despite the fact people had numbers, then the guy called numbers in what appeared to be a random order, and then said next table would be in 40 mins to one hour. We were 2 away from the last number he called after he seated a group of 5 who came after us, and put a group of 1 and 2 together into one table. When I confronted him, he couldn’t answer except to say that I needed a bigger table as I had two young children with me and he kept saying “I’m not going to argue with you lady” and I told him that he was arguing with me. He just had no words, the waiters name was cas and he should be sent to a communications course at very least to learn how to apologise to customers for what is ultimately his mistake. He should have informed us at the outset that it was a 40 minute wait. My eldest had waited over 20 mins and was very hangry and cold, and tired as well past naptime. It’s also not good to gaslight your customers telling them they have a problem when the mistake is organisational on your part. Also you can’t walk away from someone and say “you can go somewhere else.” I will also be lodging a formal complaint with his manager if I can ever speak to them because I really don’t think this is an acceptable way to treat customers. The food in my opinion is okay, but there are better places for the price, so if you don’t want your day to be ruined by the poor service and bad organisation I would recommend trying somewhere else and will be recommending this to all my friends. Also the times I have been there the waiters have shouted at me for changing my order one minute after making it and they once refused to give my child a high chair because they had to keep them in case another table needed them as we had two children on the table. Just really poor.

This was a family favourite in Shanghai but this one is a disappointment sadly. We ordered half a Peking duck, however the portion of pancakes that came with the duck wasn’t enough, so I asked for some more - the additional pancakes that then came were under steamed and dry and I was charged an additional amount for this, which I find odd given they did not portion the duck to pancake ratio appropriately. Also found it a bit strange that the wonton soup came with a pork broth instead of chicken broth. Additionally while the staff weren’t unfriendly they just didn’t really give the impression that they wanted to be here. Great atmosphere but there’s better food out there in London.

Dimsum with a side of your neighbour’s sputum. Was excited to try the newly refurbished Royal China and was sorely disappointed. Whilst the renovation looks good from the outside, it was honestly appalling how close the tables were. We are talking less than 10cm next to the next table close. For a mid-priced restaurant it felt more like a market. They also seemed short staffed for how busy the restaurant was. Definitely prioritising profits to cover the cost of the reno. We sat for a good 10 minutes and no one came to take our order so we left. The food was just decent pre-renovation anyway, but an easy option in the area. Do not bother unless you fancy being coughed on by fellow diners, which is what we dealt with on both sides before we decided to leave.

It has been a few years since we had dinner in RC in canary wharf. We came to celebrate my brother's birthday as we wanted some decent Chinese food. However, the portions were small and prices were overpriced. For example, their famous lotus rice was £16.80 but portion size was for 2 people at best. Also they didn't have crispy roast pork on a Saturday night! Service was not food, no one offered us tea for at least 10 to 15mins. We had to flag someone down. Same for ordering our dishes, no one seemed to care whether we ordered or not. They added service charge to the bill and was still asking for tip when we paid by credit card. They certainly do not deserve any extra tips. I had recently been to the Baker Street branch and had better food and experience. Shame to see the CW branch so badly run. I don't mind paying more if the service and food had better value. Don't think I will go there again.

We used to live close to this Chinese restaurant and went back for a visit yesterday evening. I’m pleased to say it was as good as ever, the food was amazing. The crispy duck as a starter was wonderful. We also especially enjoyed the beef in ginger and spring onions. Contrary to some recent reviews we found the service efficient and friendly.

The food quality has gone downhill. Really sad for what was before a great restaurant. Also prepare to pay 13% more on what the menu says since the service charge is mandatory. The service was so rude we had to ask for them to remove but they refused to and caused a huge scene. Which is absolutely illegal ofcourse since it’s not subject to VAT only if it’s optional.

My ‘go-to’ dimsum restaurant in London. I’ve been coming here for many years with family and friends and the quality remains high - food is better than the pretentious stuff you find in central london.

I had relatives coming down from the North who are quite partial to Chinese cuisine. How about a walk along the Thames followed by a riverside meal? They have a dog so I made a point of checking if they were dog-friendly. No. However they have tables and chairs outside. Unfortunately it was a wet day when we arrived and my very diplomatic brother in law went in to see what was possible. Answer: we are not serving outside. We were a bit hungry at this point so my sister offered to stay outside with the dog and have a take-away whilst the 3 of us went inside. Not a great option, but my BiL went back in to make arrangements. Response: No. You can't sit outside and have a takeaway. You have to take it away! At this point I'd heard enough and went in and made it clear - politely but clearly - that I thought this was totally unreasonable and would NEVER think of eating there again. I left the place but my friend also spoke to them very calmly to see if anything could be retrieved from the situation. She wasn't sure what was said to her, but I suspect it wasn't polite. We then headed off to an Indian eatery a few metres along the riverside (Mala). Not only did we not have to sit outside but our dog was very welcome to come in. In short we were made very welcome and enjoyed an excellent meal with first class service. I'll leave it to others to comment on the food at the Chinese. Clearly customers are regarded with total contempt. There was no attempt to 'meet us half way', as you might expect in somewhere decent. If you don't have a dog you may think, no problem. But this isn't some cheapo chop suey house. You are paying top dollar for their standard items. Do you really want to experience this kind of attitude to customers? I look forward to hearing that this place is under new management. It is a great location (right by the Uberboat jetty).

The restaurant is always busy, visit early on weekday evenings to avoid queuing. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, this restaurant has non-Chinese service staff as well. The tofu dish was a little bland, but the other dishes were on point.

Made a booking via their website only to find out that they don’t send confirmations and therefore no booking. Family dinner ruined. The rude staff didn’t help at all, offering us multiple tables for us but only for 90 minutes. A disgrace…..

Got off a river boat on a really hot day , sat at an outside table . Lots of staff milling around . Eventually approached by a older waitress who asked us what we were doing ....I said we'd like to order drinks . She pretty much barked at me 'only food' and walked away ...so that ended that ! . 2 things 1 you are missing a trick when there were only 3 people at one table eating 2 don't be so rude , as we won't consider this place when we do want to eat Chinese after picking up my wife from work nearby I've given 5 stars for food based on everyone else's ratings as its the service element I was annoyed at

The food was good and the location excellent, helped by a very warm day and it was lovely sitting by the river. However, the service was absolutely diabolical, I am 54 years old and I can honestly say I have never experienced anything like it. The list is to long to list but we were so discussed that we complained to the Manager who could not have cared less, his excused was that it has been hot today. In my opinion this restaurant does not deserve your money, I will certainly never go back there.

Very rude person making the reservations. Highly strung and very rude. Overall this place has missed the bus. Some of the older staff are the saving grace. Definitely the management should get rid of the harridan at the door.

This has got to be the worst ever restaurant that we have been to . I would give zero stars if I could. The staff are very rude and it looks as though they don't even know the meaning of customer service, everything seemed like a chore to them. The food was bland and not great either. There are plenty of more Chinese restaurants nearby and I certainly would not go again or recommend this place to others. AVOID !! Definitely won't be back.

Staff are incredibly rude. Food took forever to arrive. First chose wine and waitress kept insisting I must have the more expensive wine because we had 15 people. Refused and she got angry. Very difficult to understand and they play in that to order the wrong things for you. We had a person on the table with an allergy to shellfish. We told them this. Rice with shellfish was bought to our table and we had no idea what anything was that was given to us and the staff had no idea either. Charged £60 extra for service charge which you can’t remove. I was looking for a reduction due to such poor service not to be charged to be abused. Food bland. Whole experience was like a fawlty towers experience! Avoid at all costs

I was hesitant to go because of recent reviews about the service but I had nothing but great service today, friendly and attentive staff. Had a dim sum lunch sat outside with a view of the river and every dish really delicious. Would highly recommend.

Never felt so ill/sick after eating food. I ordered some dumplings and a soup around 6pm, Next day, I woke up in the morning throwing up for hours, its like the food just got stuck down there and couldn’t be processed for over 12 hours. Here I am sick to my bones, I cant stand up for longer than 20 seconds. I do not wish this upon anyone, ever, be careful.
