Lovely cafe in Ballater, the place was beautiful and suited the vintage/antique style whilst still being modern and sleek. Hot chocolate was tasty as was the pesto and Parmesan scone with some lovely chunky chips (not pictured). Food selection look diverse and interesting, alcoholic drinks available as well as mocktails. If you’re in the area definitely go here for lunch with a lovely historical vibe.

Great atmosphere, but the food is average. The salmon sandwich was salty as hell, slaw was tasteless. I recommend it just as an attraction, because the inner look and style is amazing and unique.

Counter order place. Seemed to be an old train station. They even have a train car. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. The order was Smoked gammon panini, rosted chicken sandwich 🥪, broccoli 🥦 soup and Cullen skink soup 🍲 . Out the back the roasted chicken had Ingredients not listed on the menu (tomato relish) whish is listed on other items. Server gladly took it back and had it remade. I am not a fan of cold sandwich (Whish is the standard) however the roasted chicken is good well balance flavors. sandwich is very good. The Broccoli 🥦 soup is very good however I could hardly taste the Broccoli. The skink soup is good. good chucks of haddock and potatoes 🥔. Keep in mind is a full dish not a cup like the Broccoli soup. The Gammon panini is great. nice smokiness to it. the tomatoes 🍅 and cheese bring the whole thing together. the overall experience was good. Most of the food was excellent. The least liked dish was the roasted chicken sandwich and Broccoli soup. Would visit again.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. The food is good, not incredible but fairly priced and generous portions. But the real draw is the beautiful restoration of the building, which retains various features from the Victorian railway - as well as some interesting history. I've thought long and hard about this and I have decided that my meal here Mid- November 2021 was the best meal I've had! Each of the member of staff were faultless with their hospitality and it was actually one of the waiters first day! They also made our engagement celebration meal very special with some lovely touches. My fiancé has a dairy intolerance and the chef couldn't have been more accommodating, even after putting them on the spot at such short notice. I couldn't recommend this experience more. 10/10

Booked into the Rothsay Rooms for a Friday evening treat, during a recent spell in Ballater, as we visit semi-regularly..! Certainly was not disappointed, as the reception, service and food/drink was excellent. One positive thing regarding Covid, is that there is some decent space between tables in restaurants now-a-days. This is automatic in the Rothsay Rooms, as all tables/booths are suitably distanced. Will certainly revisit and recommend to others, who may pass through this delightful Scottish jewel...

We decided to take a short trip out to Ballater for lunch at the Rothesay Rooms. The greeting was very friendly and inviting, the atmosphere was calm and relaxing but interesting too with a great view of the open kitchen. Now . . . the food !! Wow !! Amuse Bouche of trout tartare with trout mousse was fresh, wonderfully seasoned and great flavour. Starter of Mallard Pithivier with onion jam was simply stunning, pheasant main course was delicious, as was the beef cheek and the Hake which I was allowed to sample from my family, and steamed orange pudding dessert was the perfect end to a 5 star lunch.Such a great place to eat, perfect service delivered by lovely people. We’ve eaten in a number of Michelin star restaurants and this is definitely worthy of the accolade. What an absolutely wonderful visit. The staff were phenomenal, and fit us in to a table magically. They were so kind and friendly, that it really made the visit special. The food is outstanding. Each individual item on the plate was ridiculously flavoursome but then when you combine them all together it’s like the orchestra coming together even though each instrument is great alone. Sounds pretentious I know, but I really don’t think I can write something that truly does it justice. Best meal I have had in recent memory: thank you for the wonderful experience.

I booked in advance here (highly recommended) a table for 4 on Saturday evening and I’m so glad I did. The restaurant itself provides a lovely setting for us to enjoy our meal. The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive and the food itself was amazingly presented as well as being delicious too. Social distancing and hygiene standards were very good in light of current circumstances and it did not detract from the overall positive experience we had. And even though new restrictions of closing by 10pm that have recently came until force could have resulted in a rushed experience, the staff managed to deliver our 3 courses plus coffees with perfect timing. My family and I would whole heartedly recommend dining here and we shall return the next time we are back in the area.

Like so many restaurants the Rothesay Rooms had been shut for around 6 months due to the pandemic. i couldn't believe my luck when I learned the Rothesay Rooms was re-opening the day after my birthday, and even though I had booked to dine elsewhere on my actual birthday, I booked for dinner right away, (booking an overnight stay in Ballater too).We were delighted to see how busy it was when we arrived for our 8.15pm table reservation. It was also good to see that there hadn't required to be more than a couple of tables removed for social distancing, as the tables are very well spaced out at the best of times.Having dined there 3 times before we just adore the food on the menu, and are in awe of the considerable time and huge effort which goes in to presenting such fabulous plates. After such a lengthy break being closed everything certainly seemed to be back running like clockwork both front of house and in the kitchen. The service was as always really attentive and very friendly.I began with Orkney Scallops and my husband chose the Young Grouse. It is impossible to describe all the mouth-watering components on these plates, and the attention to detail in the stunning presentation. Not just a work of art on the plate, but delicious too.For our main courses we each have our favourites too - always beef for my husband, and nearly always fish for me. I was delighted to find that Monkfish was on the menu, and my other half went for the Aberdeen Angus beef. Once again I have to stress that the plates are made up of 6 or 7 incredibly flavoursome ingredients that it is almost impossible to describe in just words. These plates were both absolutely scrumptious, and we both had tastes of the other's.Dessert - let me state that I have not eaten anything sweet for 16 months due to major health issues. Then let me state that the Rothesay Rooms sweet menu tempted me to throw caution to the wind and risk a dessert - first time since may 2019!I chose the Rhubarb dessert, and cannot describe at all in words just how lush the Elderflower Sorbet accompanying my Parfait was!! Visit and try it for yourself! My husband not normally one to go for Chocolate chose that sweet, and he was not disappointed with every divine morsel on his plate. With a Craft Lager, 2 large glasses of Malbec, a Double Espresso & a Cappuccino our bill came to £135.40. The Rothesay Rooms would not be classed as cheap by many, but I would say it is incredibly good value for the extraordinary standard of the food, the terrific service and lovely relaxed feel of the dining room. This is exceptional fine dining at its best. Head Chef Ross Cochrane is doing a remarkable job, as are all of his team, both in the kitchen and front of house. Top marks to all for a faultless service on the first night after a 6 month closure. A very memorable meal - hope to make a return visit again soon.

We had dinner here on 6th March and whilst the restaurant was relatively quiet (7 or 8 tables of two) the ambience and front of house service was first class - neither rushed nor intrusive, getting the balance just right. We were served an appetiser of white bait with alioli accompaniment - very tasty. My “pig” filled ravioli starter was perfect, the ravioli was so thin and light, perfect for showcasing the depth of flavour in the meat. My guinea fowl main was an absolute winner too, it was melt in the mouth perfection. My husband had steak tartare followed by the venison and both dishes were outstanding (I sampled both!) We didn’t think we’d room for desserts but given the quality and delicious-ness of our previous courses, we had a wee break before I ordered poached pear, with white chocolate ice cream and a nut brittle, whilst my husband had cranachan with panacotta. What can I say? Both desserts were deliciously yummy and light, so a piece of advice, don’t pass on the desserts thinking you’re too full up, you’ll miss the perfect end to a perfect meal.

Final day of our holiday and brother in law decided it was his treat for lunch. We arrived early but it wasn't a problem, we were seated straight away given menus and drinks order taken. We were given plenty of time to decide what we wanted to eat while drinking our aperitifs. The starters were delicious, hot smoked salmon, ham hock terrine and venison pithivier which was particularly yummy. There was a slight hitch in the kitchen and the mains arrived for the men before the ladies, however an apology and a glass of prosecco each which was more than acceptable for the short wait. Booked for the first time after reading the reviews. Must say that our meal was truly fantastic. Special thanks must go to the 2 people at front of house who made sure that our evening was special. My wife, who is coeliac, was well catered for too. Even though the menu is limited the chef adapted the meal to her particular requirement; she was blown away with the food and said that the flavours were amazing. For me the menu was everything expected from a restaurant that uses produce from the beautiful Scottish countryside and sea.So a special mention must go to chef and his amazing staff for making our evening so special. We have no hesitation to recommend this establishment. Unfortunately the restaurant is style over substance. The Chef needs to spend some time in France or even nearer in Glasgow to understand how to put dishes together with taste and imagination. I had the Monkfish as a starter and it was overcooked which is sacrilege. I had the two very small pieces of venison which were okay but had little taste as they had been sous-vide. The pricing is ridiculous. I would say both courses based on the pricing at The Gamba in Glasgow were overpriced by at least £6 each. I will not be coming back.

I went as a group of 8 to The Rothesay rooms , having been there many times before . We all decided to go for the 5 course taster menu at £55 per head together with the wine flight at a further £25 per head . The food was well presented and delicious but the portions were tiny and at £11 per course we felt wasn’t good value for money . The wine flight was hugely overpriced. The wines served at each course complemented the food beautifully but again a tiny amount was served . Only approximately 3/4 of each bottle of wine was used for 8 of us which meant we only had 6-7cl in each glass . The wines served were between £25-30 per bottle so charging £5 per person per glass was extortionate.

Very smart place, nicely furnished, with enough of a Traditional look to be pleasing on the eye, however we did find the temperature somewhat chilly. Very professional waiting staff, attentive and friendly, without being intrusive. Very nice menu, the starters in particular were to my taste, both in choice and size, two starters suit me better that one followed by a main as I cannot eat huge platefuls of food. The main courses by comparison to the starters, which were a work of art and delicious, lacked finesse in presentation, in all you fact big eaters out there will delight in the portion size, but then it was a traditional Sunday roast. Chicken and meat and roasties cooked to perfection, if somewhat lost with the pile of other things on the plate. No room for dessert, but the plates which I saw coming from the open to view kitchen, looked a joy. Excellent wine by the glass, so all in all a good experience and good value for money, being less expensive than the evening meals which I thought were too pricey at £14 for a starter. We would certainly return but only at lunchtime.

Impeccable and warm service. Refined cuisine using fresh, quality produce. Sufficient choice but not excessive. The open kitchen allows the chefs to see the work at once. Typical Scottish club style decoration The value for money is correct

From the moment we stepped into the restaurant until we reluctantly left the experience was faultless. A warm welcome and expertly prepared delicious dishes made for a perfect evening. We enjoyed the tasting menu which was carefully thought out and well balanced. Every dish was beautifully presented, timing was just right and service was pleasant, attentive and in no way intrusive. We opted to choose our own wine and the excellent advice from the manager was spot on.

Excellent dinner - well designed dishes beautifully executed with plenty of attention to detail. Most impressed. Plus a good wine list. Attentive, friendly service and a good atmosphere in the tastefully decorated dining room. My third visit and for sure there will be a fourth!

Very refined kitchen, beautifully presented on the plate. Stylish service, adapted to the decor. Pure indulgence, which may cost something. The restaurant is only open a few days a week. Reservation via the internet is necessary, but this was very difficult.

Visited this restaurant whilst staying in Ballater.. Amazing food and service. As good as ANY Michelin starred establishments we have eaten in around the country and abroad. Probably the best scallops I've ever eaten.. Tried to book again before leaving for home, but unfortunately not open every day.. Would certainly return if back in the area.. Worth every penny for that special meal.. Would definitely recommend.. Well done chef and staff..

Not the most salubrious of surrounding and not over impressed by my waiter so that’s the negatives out of the way. On the plus side, the food and choice of wine was excellent, so on balance my rating is 4 star
