We called in for a quick cup of coffee and a glass of wine, both were good. The menu looked interesting for a future visit. Traditional style English pub with ingelnook fireplace. good character about the place. Car park and garden furniture to the rear.

Under a change of hands. Service at bar was standard, no chit chat from landlord. Landlady was more personable for dinner. Unfortunately the meals were also not of the same standard as before. Rice was over cooked and water logged which spoiled the curry. Flat bread was dense. Fish was much smaller than previous visits. Also weirdly, the pie had a salty pastry. It's a shame

Overall I enjoyed my time here with my family on mother’s day, I enjoyed my meal and there were no complaints from our party of 8. The staff seem to flow well and they seemed happy and polite and all food came out at the same time, the prices were no different to any other pub, eating out is just expensive in general. We had Sunday lunch here today and it was really lovely. The rarebit tart as a starter was very tasty, and the roast beef dinner was excellent……the beef was pink, soft and tender. Veg was lovely and a good selection. Special mention for the gravy which was fabulous ..we asked for more it was so good! We took our young labrador with us and sat outside, but could have sat in if we’d have wanted to….so the pub is very dog friendly. The manager was chatty and very friendly and the young lad serving was just as nice. They were both attentive but not overbearing which was great. All in all a very good experience and we will definitely go again.

Please don't just come here hoping for Sunday lunch in a country pub. It seems you must book one of the designated tables. It is clear that they only allow one sitting on the specific tables and if you haven't booked one of these, then, certainly it's our experience, you are not going to be able to order any lunch. We had spotted the pub online and thought it looked lovely, so set out leaving ourselves 90 mins for a lunch before our nearby appointment. When we walked in just after 12.05 and got a table and bought a drink we were told they were fully booked for lunch. Indeed all the tableclothed tables were marked with reserved signs. Half of them filled up while we had our drinks and the other half remained entirely empty and still were when we left around 1.15. So, no lunch, plenty of empty tables to have had it and indeed a perfectly good table we were sitting at. The meals the people on the table right next to ours were enjoying looked good, smelt good too. So hard luck to us. No flexibility at all from the management team and they missed a sale of 2 Sunday lunches and two more drinks, at least. I am a supporter of pubs, love country pubs and their hard working teams. However, when hospitality is as inflexible as this it's a real shame, so please make sure you book or you will be really hungry and disappointed like us.

We were warmly welcomed into this thriving village pub, which was surprisingly busy for a Tuesday evening. The menu is not as extensive as some places, but they concentrate on a range of traditional dishes that are cooked fresh to order. I tucked into a delicious lasagne that was made with proper minced beef and was beautifully seasoned served with a tasty, fresh side salad. For me pudding is always a highlight of any meal and the menu at the Rose & Crown did not disappoint. The difficulty is choosing what to have. As a chocoholic I opted for the Blackforest chocolate dessert which was beautiful - a light chocolate cake studded with cherries and served with fresh cream. At the bar there are a range of real ales on the hand pumps plus a selection of other beverages both alcoholic and soft.Highly recommended.

This used to be a favourite local pub, which we would choose for birthdays, and take "gastro" friends to. However, it has changed hands, with the previous owners taking their excellent chef to another local hostelry (which we haven't yet managed to try). Now the R & C is just a pleasant, good value pub, but the erstwhile extensive and innovative menu has been replaced by good, typical pub grub, and decent beer, albeit a more limited wine menu. That having been said, the greeting was warm, the service and food good, and the value excellent. A perfectly decent pub to eat out now, but sadly lacking the variety and innovation under the previous owners.

The relief of having a decent pub back open in Ashdon when it reopened in 2013 was such that my family made very frequent visits and could pretty much be guaranteed excellent food and particularly delicious Sunday lunches every time.Oh dear what a let down! After recently changing hands, its seems the new managers have absolutely no idea about what had made the R & C such a success over the last year. The food choice is limited, takes ages to be served and not anywhere near the quality of what was offered by the previous chef. The Sunday carvery is a disaster: cold, watery veg, rubbery roast potatoes and practically raw beef ( and I like mine rare!) making it a few quid cheaper certainly does not make it more tasty. The new manager seems to have no idea what is required of a village pub landlord either; no conversation, no welcome smile or sign of recognition. All in all it felt like a massive slide down hill and I'm really not sure if well go again. Sad.

Not sure what's going on here. It is a year since I last had lunch at this pub. All was well last time - a good menu, pleasant atmosphere and tasty food. Yesterday it was distinctly different. The menu was straight out of the 1970s, e.g. baguette with chicken & avocado or prawn & Marie Rose sauce (honestly). There were a few hot dishes too. Both of us had the battered haddock which I must say was an exceptionally nice piece of fish, generous in size and perfectly cooked.Staff were pleasant enough but seemed to be on autopilot, lacking humour or interest. The ambience was degraded further by overly loud and persistent "music" pumped into every corner of the bar by boxy-toned loudspeakers. We though we had struck lucky by finding a side room where we could escape the din but it turned out to be a gap in the recording. As soon as we sat down it started up again from yet another pair of loudspeakers!I don't know what to make of it all. It's far from bad - still quite a decent country pub - but not what I was expecting after the previous experience. Someone said the pub had changed hands. If so, based on this visit I'm afraid it hasn't been for the better.

We have eaten here on several occasions and so far have enjoyed every meal. My husband's meat is cooked and presented well. The mushroom wellington is wonderful as was the broccoli soup. The roasts are great. Be prepared to wait for your meal though, but it does mean that it is fresh and it is always worth the delay. Deserts could perhaps be a little more varied. The pub itself is clean and comfortable and attractively decorated, retaining the old character. The staff cope very well with a large group as well as smaller parties. The food was well cooked and very tasty and the prices were reasonable. Well worth another visit.

Lovely old traditional pub that has been recently taken over and refurbed to maintain the cosy feel but looks very fresh and clean. Have been twice now and have had the steak pie both times as it is absolutely gorgeous, the pastry is amazing. Chips are very good too. Looking forward to going back but don't know if I'll be able to tempt myself to stray from the pie! Cornish Orchard cider on tap is also a winner, please keep that stocked - look forward to drinking more of that when the sun comes out.

This is a comfortable and friendly country pub. We stopped here after a walk and didn't expect such good food. I had the fish pie, my husband the ham, eggs and chips, and our 2 friends the stew and dumpings. They were all well served and good sized portions for the less than £8.00 we paid. an historic pub too - ask the landlady for the story behind the drawings on the wall in the Cromwell room. We will return.

Went to the Rose and Crown, we had booked a lunch (for 2) and it so happened it was the same day as a large party. Got slightly worried, but needn't have, as the staff were incredibly helpful and fitted us in before the large party. We were in a separate room so away from the noise, with a lovely warm atmosphere. Service was brilliant despite the staff being rushed off their feet, and the food was fantastic, neatly presented, good portions and value for money. Everywhere was clean and tidy, couldn't fault it especially with it being such a busy lunchtime. Would definitely go back.

We came here on a Friday lunchtime. It was simple (ham eggs and chips) but very good. The pub has been recently refurbished to a good standard and all in all the place is well worth a visit!!

Visited the Rose & Crown for a birthday party. To start we both had the prawn cocktail. Not to my liking as the harisa sauce was too spicy for my taste. My wife declared it great. For main courses I had the Priors Hall ham with egg and chips and my wife had the fish pie with mash. Both of these dishes were well presented and very good. The homemade sticky toffee pudding was awesome.Unfortunately too far from home for casual night out but worth a visit if you are in the area

I was here a week ago had a lovely sausage and mash and veg, sausages were excellent, bar maid (a Yorkshire lass) pleasant and quick to serve.Only a week later I cam back, it took an ago to get any drinks, yes it was busy but it has been busy before, staff behind the bar were next to useless. Had sausage and mash again this time, no veg turned up, sausages suddenly seemed very big standard compared to a week ago and instead of three we only got two sausages. Should have complained, but had to get back for a conference phone call, however there was another gentleman in there complaining, all is not good there, over priced for what it is and staff need some serious training.

A Christmas get together for a group of us girls was very successful. Some chose from the specials board, others from The Christmas Menu. Beautifully presented food, well cooked - portions too large for us ladies! Enormous amounts of crunchy roast potatoes and fresh vegetables. Service was very good,we will be back!

The Rose and Crown used to be a complete dump - and that's being kind. Since it's refurbishment, it's been transformed. I've been going there for the last few months for a pint in the beer garden once in a while. The beer is very good, and the beer garden a great place to chill out. I ate there last week and had the fish and chips which were really tasty and good value at £8.50 (ish). Staff are friendly and the place is always busy - I thought the novelty would wear off soon enough, but enough people seem to think its worth coming back, and so do I.

After a substantial renovation the Rose and Crown offers a lighter, more spacious ambience than under the previous management. Five of us had lunch. There is a wide choice of dishes: a set menu, a la carte and specials. There are local beers, such as Norfolk Wherry and beers from further afield, including one of my favourites, Doombar from Cornwall. There was some waiting between courses, but when this means that the food arrives hot and freshly cooked this is no hardship. Five people, three courses, drinks and coffees for £100 is great value.

Have heard such good reports of this place but I'm afraid it did not live up to my expectations. Very ordinary menu. A rainy evening so not surprised that there was not too many people in the place so not much of an atmosphere. A shame but will not rush back

This was my first visit since the pub re-opened under new ownership. It was a typically quiet midweek lunchtime but none the worse for that - our food and drink was excellent. The refurbishment has been carried out well, retaining the atmosphere of a pub (with some of these gastro conversions they might as well call it a restaurant and stop pretending). The ham, egg & chips seemed rather pricey at £10.95 until we saw the huge helping of ham from the local Priors Hall Farm - not cheap stuff. A colleague really enjoyed the chicken supreme while my own 8oz beefburger must be the tastiest I have ever eaten anywhere; moist and succulent with a fabulous smokey flavour, set in a crisp focaccia bun.Spacious table, good choice of beers, pleasant staff.. what's not to like? Five stars would be OTT on the basis of one lunchtime visit, so it's 4 for now and maybe an upgrade next time!

Our first trip back since the pub has been refurbished. We were impressed with the decor which has carefully incorporated the original period features. The food was well cooked. However there were not enough vegetables for four people.I feel the food is a little overpriced for what it is.Service was good but the waiting staff do have to constantly cross the bar area to deliver food which makes standing at the bar for a drink difficult.Overall, nice but I won't hurry back.

We have visited three times now. The first time we went was fantastic, the second time not so good and the third time we were very disappointed. A Saturday evening where the specials board only had one item left and a menu that left little to the imagination, please advise the weight of your steaks as I don't think I've ever seen such a small rib-eye, also when advertised that it comes with Stilton mushrooms don't just think that a bit of flavored butter will do, the pub has been refurbished beautifully, the service staff are great but I'm afraid the owners mustn't take things for grantage.

This pub has been well refurbished, with some of the original beams dating back hundreds of years. The food is incredible, I can recommend the steak and ale pie, and the fish and chips. A small, intimate and friendly pub. A must for someone looking for a true English Pub, that is not a tourist spot. First class!
