The Rose and Crown Charlton we had Amazing food, Amazing staff, probably the nicest Sunday lunch I’ve had in ages. Definitely worth a visit

Went for Sunday lunch today and it was the best I've had in a long time. From the moment we walked in the staff were welcoming and showed us to our table straight away. Within minutes a waitress came and took our drinks order then she took our food order. We didn't have to wait long for our starters to be brought out and then each course after that flowed very nicely. They have clearly got a great system going on and all of the food that we saw coming out looked amazing. We will definitely be returning. Thanks Roger & Jane

We were staying at nearby Deddington and looking for somewhere to eat. Looked on Tripadvisor and came across this place which had good reviews. We didn’t book but were able to get a table. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Good menu choices with reasonable prices. Food was excellent. Well cooked and good sized portions. Would definitely visit again if in the area.

We had a fabulous meal here last night. It was a family get together for nine of us, with five travelling from overseas for Silverstone. The menu has wonderful choices with several options for everyone, the staff are efficient and attentive and the food is delicious. It was a truly wonderful meal, thank you so much.

A great get together with old friends and family! The staff were extremely attentive and so happy to please! Food was delicious, not just the standard pub-grub, you’ll be surprised with what is on offer, in a quaint little pub in Charlton. The men at the table said the draught beers was tops!

Found this lovely pub by accident - looking for a central place to meet family. Received a warm welcome from landlord, staff and gorgeous dog. Service was excellent, food amazing, followed by a very pleasant drink in the garden. Impressive view too. Thank you - hope to be back another day to try the rest of the menu!

The perfect mid point to meet our friends for lunch. The location is just off the A43, secluded, country fresh, pretty gardens with newly rebuilt dry stone walled boundary. Delightful young enthusiastic waitress, great lady chef/joint patron from South Africa but has for lots of years have settled in the English countryside. Huge well priced menu, fish from St Ives daily, local produce, local butcher. My pate’ was home made, super flavour, the others all enjoyed a filled mushroom to start. Mains were equally tasty, sea food salad with lots of smoky salmon and king prawns, a chicken Caesar salad, a tasty beef pie, wonderful jus/gravy, more served on the side! A bottle of Chenin Blanc and a 250ml of SA Pinotage left each couple with a £90 bill, good value, good service, well cooked food made with top drawer ingredients. Thanks Glen

Took my Mum and Wife here for Mother’s Day along with my kids and we had the most amazing meal. Not only was the food superb but the service was outstanding. They couldn’t do enough for us, all of them are so lovely - even helped cater for our 2 fussy kids. Will definitely be going back soon! 👏🏼👏🏼

Today, we took my father out for lunch on his 86th birthday and chose here because of its reputation in the area and our own past experience of it being so positive. Today still managed to exceed expectations as every one of the seven of us really enjoyed everything we had across three courses. The food was excellent. I hadn't mentioned when I booked that it was my father's birthday but it came out in the conversation with staff between courses and when his dessert arrived it was on a larger plate with Happy Birthday written on it in chocolate and a sparkler burning. Great food, great and friendly service. I'm already looking forward to the next visit. Maybe mix it up by having a quiet drink by the lovely open fire.

Been wanting to go here for ages! Managed to book a table after 2 answerphone messages and a conversation. Turned up on a Saturday night to find no table due to a "miscommunication" ! We were finally offered a totally unsuitable table in the walkway right by the bar. We were very disappointed and left. Our evening was saved by the Saffron in Brackley. See my review!

Went to the Rose & Crown today and we both had the steak and ale pie with chips. Really great. For dessert we shared the honeycomb cheesecake which was delicious. This was our third time and would definitely recommend this pub but make sure you book in advance. We will be back.

We lived coming here. We met family here as we live north and south, and the owners were brilliant at getting us in. It is a great country pub, friendly, nothing is too much trouble, the food was delicious. Would wholeheartedly recommend. The only comment I would make is that as a vegetarian, I would say it might be good to have another veggie option. The veggie dish was lasagne, which I absolutely love, so for me was perfect (and the chips they do are amazing!!). Thank you for a wonderful evening!

About twenty of us flew into Hinton in the Hedges and descended on Rhona and her team for lunch. At her request nearly all of us had pre-ordered so she had a list of names and orders. She had prepared an area to seat us all, and the piping hot and very tasty food was served incredibly promptly, by Rhona and her friendly smiling team. Individual payment was also made simple. We were all very impressed and look forward to returning to this delightful village pub. Thank you all.

The welcome at the Rose and Crown is always warm and friendly. The meals are always delicious and the specials are very varied, it’s frequently difficult to choose! Their Sunday lunch is always excellent too. They really go to a lot of trouble if it’s a special occasion, so kind and helpful ensuring it really is a special day.

Visited here for weekday lunch with friends who live locally. Had a lovely lunch, we all ate differently from the menu and all dishes were well cooked and presented. Staff very friendly.

Beautiful location and friendly atmosphere. Food is good quality comes out hot and we really enjoyed it. Extremely busy pub so it is essential to book. Lovely garden and parking was fine. Downside for us was the slow service at least 45 mins from being seated, ordering and getting our food.

We had Sunday lunch here with friends and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The landlord and landlady were very welcoming on arrival and the service was great throughout our meal. The menu provided plenty to choose from, and the specials were excellent. The Sunday roast came with locally-sourced beef which was very tasty, tender and plentiful, together with a good selection of vegetables.

Always excellent food and great service . The food is freshly cooked which I think is quite rare nowadays. The meals are good value for money. There is sually a nice fish dish not necessarily battered! The specials are always fab.

Were expecting some great food from this pub as researched it thoroughly for a lovely sunday lunch with the family. The starters were disappointing (the spring roll was all soggy and undercooked inside). There was hardly any meat with the roast but worst of all - there was not much choice of sides like coulifouer and cheese which is a MUST for all sunday roasts? The potatoes seemed like they've been reheated at least 3 times or cooked the day before as they were waxy inside. All in all we won't be back.

We popped in for a couple of lunchtime drinks, but the lure of the open fire and a roast dinner was too good to pass up. We both had pate starter, roast beef main, and for pudding I had the Affogato and hubby had the key lime pie. It was all delicious! The roast beef was really tender and perfectly cooked and there was plenty of it. Veggies, roast spuds and Yorkshire puds were all spot on. The beer is kept really well (good choice as well - Tribute, London Pride and Timothy Taylor Landlord). All the staff are really friendly and welcoming. This was our first time eating here though we’ve been for drinks plenty of times. We’ll definitely be back for food again and have already recommended to our friends.

We were staying in the area and looking for somewhere to eat and called in made us feel very welcome and the food was really great. We ended up eating here 3 nights while we was staying and got talking to some of the locals they all made us feel very welcome Alvin and his staff are very good nothing was to much trouble will be going back very soon

A very warm welcome into a charming, British village pub with great British atmosphere and amazing food to go with it. Very attentive staff, friendly and very helpful. The owners and staff were really welcoming throughout. This is exactly what I’m after if I want great home cooked food in a typical English stone-walled pub. We will most definitely return!

We received the warmest welcome, were sat by the warm and cozy fireplace, which was perfect for a cold night. The place was lovely, fresh and clean. We were very impressed with the menu, as it’s not just the usual pub food, i had the smoked haddock on a mustard mash with delicious wilted spinach and a poached egg on top, it was wow!! The service we received made it extra special, thank you. We finished off with a single malt, it pretty much summed up a perfect evening.

Our party had a delightful Friday night supper in a cosy old pub with a great atmosphere. Three of our party raved about the lamb chops, and I had a large portion of fish and chips. We all enjoyed superb puddings, the staff were attentive and friendly whilst the bill was well priced. Highly recommended and well worth another visit.

He certainly hit a jackpot when we discovered this hidden little beauty earlier today.We parked in the large car park to the rear of the pub and decided to sit in the large rear garden.Our orders were taken and after a very short wait our lunches appeared.My wife had the Steak and Ale pie with chips and vegetables and i had my usual Sunday lunch...options of Beef or pork, i chose the former.The food was excellent and sitting in the most peaceful garden added to our enjoyment.The roast potatoes were outstanding and the beef was so easy to chew.We both ordered desert, i had the chunky apple pie with ice cream and my wife had a nougat desert ( sorry forgot the name!).Staff were fabulous and genuinely so and with 2 pints of lemonade and 2 pints of coke our food totalled £50 exactly.Keep up the excellent work and let's look after our pubs.Visited 9th August 2020.

Just finished my amazing pizza, Gone Trufflin' from the Rose & Crown in Charlton. In these awful days of lockdown, it was great to pick up my dinner in a convivial atmosphere and then get home to eat one of the best pizzas I've had ever. Can't wait til I can eat it again in the pub, but in the meantime this will do.

Popped in a few times lately and have found the atmosphere warm and inviting. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff regarding the drinks and food. The food options are varied, from tasty traditional pub grub to extremely tasty curries and alternative spicy dishes and to top it all very, very delicious pizzas. Arrived to a great parking area with a wonderful outdoor area :- I will be back to try this out in the summer!! We walked into a wonderfully warm pub and was taken to a gorgeous table by the fire. We had fully loaded burgers, which were incredible, accompanied by great wine and beer.The staff were so attentive and the pub had a great atmosphere. We will be back!!

I took my family to the Rose & Crown in Charlton last night and it was fantastic. The pub was heaving with locals, lots of people propping the bar up and there was a great atmosphere. The beer was crips and fresh (I was drinking Tribute) and the staff were excellent. The lady who served us was very attentive, knew the menu really well, very polite and efficient and she made the experience all the more enjoyable. We ordered pheasant and apple brandy pate to start, and the mains were steak and ale pie, bacon and cheese burger, fish and chips, and macaroni cheese with crayfish. I recently paid £16 for a burger at Coast to Coast in Birmingham which was absolute garbage, and yet The Rose & Crown put together an absolutely belting burger for £13, Everyone else loved their main courses and although the macaroni cheese was actually made with Penne instead of macaroni is irrelevant, it's just a different shaped pasta and there was probably a good reason for it i.e. they'd run out of macaroni pasta.The fact is the starters and mains were delicious, it was served promptly, it was hot, fresh and hadn't been sat under hot lamps for ages. The kitchen staff clearly care about what they send out and cook it with pride and the taste and quality clearly reflects that (the chips are ridiculously good!) We've discovered a real gem in this pub and we will be returning without any hesitation. I'm looking forward to trying out their Sunday roast as if last night is anything to go by we will no doubt be in for a treat. I think what this shows is that village pubs can maintain their character of being a good village pub but also provide excellent food for local and visitors alike. Just had 2 of the new pizza takeaways. Absolutely superb. Warm up was some award winning Taylor's Landlord too. The menu now has great kids options and more. After an evening draining their excellent cellar, I can be a kid too.This team just get better and better. The currys are exceptional. I had the best venison steak I've ever had here. The pie and mash is easily the best around. Do just try it. This is by far the best pub grub around, better than the gastros without the hype or the prices. This is an exceptional team delivering exceptional hospitality and great food. Well played.d

Popped for a Friday after work relax. Good people at the bar, good chat, great beer, fantastic food at good rates. Two families of 3 generations chatting (and no iPads), 2 terriers and a spaniel too. This is the genuine article when it comes to what a village pub can be. Simply superb. D

This is a very friendly pub with a great atmosphere. The landlord and locals make you feel very welcome. A huge selection of drinks, I'm now a Gin drinker! The food selection is very good, even had gluten free food for me. Outside area is wonderful. Definitely worth a visit. We will return when we attend Silverstone next year.

We have been here a few times and this lovely country pub offers consistently great food and great service. There is a really welcoming atmosphere and great views from the beer garden a lovely please to visit for some tasty food, or to use as a start finish point for some lovely country walks. Recommend.

We’ve been visiting family in a nearby village and heard great things about the Sunday lunches at the Rose and Crown. We weren’t disappointed! Food and service were fantastic. Great choice of beers on tap with knowledgeable and friendly bar staff. The Sunday roast was excellent and really was cooked to perfection, we’ll definitely be back soon. After both my husband and I working the day before,(outside in uniform!!)on the hottest day in England, we decided to treat ourselves to a lunch out.

I went recently for a meal as part of birthday celebrations. Firstly the parking was not the best and luckily I was able to park near the gas/oil canaster. This was obviously not the best solution. The pub itself is nice and is very warming. The food was good but I feel that the portion sizes where not the best and did not feel that I was getting my monies worth. We were also not asked once if our meal was OK, luckily it was but I feel that the service should have been there. I feel this pub has a homely presence to it and feel with the above addressed this would be an ideal place to eat.

First time we’d been there for several years and we were certainly not disappointed. The menu was limited but interesting, We thoroughly enjoyed our choice of food ,delicious and well presented. We have added the Rose and Crown to our list of favourite places to eat.

Food here is excellent, proper pub food, tasty, well cooked and good potions. Three of us had the steak pie which was delicious and my husband said his Sticky Toffee Pudding was the best he had ever had.

Five of us ate here on a Sunday lunchtime. The food was beautifully cooked and the service commendable. A good range of classic recipes, including bouillabaisse, and a very nice Sauvignon to wash it all down.

Lovely cosy pub and very attentive service. The food was very good and reasonably priced. The menu although not extensive, which is always a good sign as far as I am concerned contained some unusual dishes.Well worth a visit and I look forward to returning.

Mothering Sunday is always a challenge for both host and guest as demand is often difficult to satisfy on such days. However on this last Mothering Sunday, my wife and I were treated and the selected venue was the Rose and Crown. From the moment we entered until we left the experience was of the highest order. From the exceptional Gin and Tonic prepared by Struan right through to the non-dairy ice cream prepared especially for the grandchildren, every one of our meals was outstanding, the presentation was excellent, the tastes were beyond compare and the service was impeccable throughout. We shall be visiting again, no question, see you there!

All you could wish for in a country pub. Interesting and well cooked food, regular changes, gracious and interesting host and staff. Atmosphere as you would hope for. Reasonable prices for food and wine. South African influence in the cooking, but not intrusive.

We usually come at lunch time but we wanted to treat our neighbours to a thank you meal for their kindness to us. we were welcomed by the hosts tonight who were Alvin and Rhona. The staff who took our orders and served us were friendly , knowledgeable about the food on offer and the specials. Our party of four had the lamb shank in red wine, smoked haddock fish cakes , hunters chicken and vegetarian lasagne. Our friends are trained caterers and ran ski schools and ran restaurants. We had sweets and excellent wine and liquors. We had a wonderful night and excellent food. We will be returning for more of their scrumptious food and warm welcome.

We have eaten here several times before in this lively, child and dog friendly, very busy, country pub. All staff friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food was delicious and sensibly priced, we had a Roast Pork Sunday lunch - faultless ! We also recommend the Rose and Crown for it's very good range of real ales. Absolutely fantastic Burns night from the team at the Rose. Great piper, but getting 'proper' haggis from Scotland made all the difference. Attention to detail is the hallmark of this fantastic pub.

We are here as a last minute decision having heard great things about it. It was a weekend evening at 6pm and busy. We hadn’t booked so were lucky to get a table. We were told they would need it back by a stated time and we were fine with that as we needed to be fairly quick anyway. However we were made to feel hurried throughout by the “efficient” service - I hadn’t even finished my last mournful of food before my plate was whipped away. We were well within the time we had available so there was no need to do this.

We have eaten here several times and the food is excellent as well as the service. This pub has a great atmosphere and traditional log fire. Highly recommend for fantastic food and a great menu. They cook amazing Steak but the crayfish macaroni cheese is a wonder. Lots of parking lots of local walks.

This was our third visit in three months, Struan is an excellent host, explaining the menu in detail, and taking your order without writing it down. The food and service were excellent. My only criticism is that I don't agree with having dogs in restaurants, as not all owners are responsible, but I accept this is common in many places now.

We were a party of four plus a dog for Sunday lunch, not our first visit we have been in the week before but the Sunday Lunch was great, lovely rare roast beef and a good size portion of vegetables, nothing to complain about at all.

16 of us made a group booking. Rhona was very understanding about various changes to the pre-order we made. The food was superb, large portions so those of us that had opted for 2 rather than 3 courses were thankful! There was even complementary mince pies and coffee at the end so the value at £25 a head for 3 course, £20.50 for 2 was outstanding. Particularly memorable was the escalopes of sirloin and slow braised ox cheek suet pudding. Also highly recommended is the starter of vegetable tempura, and the luxury chicken liver pate. One of the party had cheese and biscuits - there was enough to feed at least 2 on the plate. Enjoy!

It being a Wednesday we did not think it necessary to make a reservation, but when we arrived we were surprised that we got the last available table; obviously the pub had a good reputation. From then on everything proved our initial thought to be correct. The service was impeccable, the menu varied, the food delicious and the bill not daunting.

Recently visited Rose & Criwn for lunch. We were warmly welcomed by the Patron and the warmth of the welcome was matched by the ambience.

Struan is an excellent host, he explains the dishes in detail and takes your order without writing it down. The menu is a great mix of traditional and more unusual dishes. The food was freshly prepared and very well presented, it all tasted amazing (the chips are incredible). For the standard of food, it is reasonably priced. There is no doubt that we will be back soon! It's not often that I rate anywhere a 5, but this is well deserved.

We visited The Rose and Crown on a Friday night for a family member's birthday. We were a group of 10 so quite a large party. The hosts accommodated us extremely well. The service was fantastic, from our waiter explaining in great detail the menu, to the food all being home made, and more drinks being offered when required. The waiter was able to memorise everyone's order, starters and mains, a quite impressive feat, especially as a number of our party asked for changes to the original menu offering! The food itself was really good. I personally had the jungle curry and it was great. The right level of heat and a lot of chicken and prawns in the curry.

Great meal and drinks. We were on a very short time scale but they delivered so promptly we had time to relax afterwards and even had time for 'puds! Great variety of wine and beer. Extensive menu reasonably priced. Will be returning in a couple of weeks! Wish we had found this pub years ago.

What days does your waitress Shannon Turbill work she's amazing and i would love to give her a tip and a pat on the back :)

We came here for a bite and was not at all left disappointed! The food is absolutely gorgeous, and the chirpy young girl serving us made us feel very welcomed.

I didn't want to score just 3 as the service, deserts and quality were high but there is still work to be done in the roasts to make them stand out from the average. The green veg was just boiled, rib of beef wasn't offered pink, the apple sauce tasted like it was out of a jar.... saying that lovey surroundings, superb puds and clean plates from my 5 year old! So would try again on their regular menu!
