Roma Fish Bar in Swansea

Only managed to eat a few chips from the portion due to them being uncooked. Was one of the best places for chippy but slowly going downhill.

Called in at opening time today in the hope that our chips would be hot and freshly cooked which they were,unfortunately the massive pile of chips they gave us were mostly crap and inedible,

I'm absolutely gutted to have to write this review as me and my partner come her often and the food is usually lovely. Unfortunately this time the food tasted bad (dirty oil maybe?) And we both found long blonde hair in our food. Not impressed :(

Great food in a superb spot with lovely views. Quality food is guaranteed, with large portions & very good prices . The best option for your takeaway fill on Gower by far !! 👍👍👏👏😍

This used to be a great chip shop, Roma has a great reputation around Swansea but unfortunately this one has gone downhill dramatically. The food has been going downhill for a while but last night was the worst yet. Chicken and mushroom pie and chips…..pie was almost white with a crust so dry you could use it as chalk and a struggle to find the filling, chips were oily and slippery as if kept warm for far too long. £10 for 2 pies and a bag of chips which was almost inedible in enough. I am one customer who has had enough and won’t be coming back

Usually I enjoy food from here on the rare occasion I call in, but this evening I had a mince & onion pie it was just awful horrible pastry about two teaspoons of tasteless filling it was £2.95 along with a totally tasteless rissole £2.10 and even the chips were tasteless £3.50. Incase you think I have covid I shared with two other family members which also confirmed it was all bloody awful. Chippies need to order Celtic pies they are delicious and they would still make a good profit. I feel chip shops are buying the cheapest nastiest products and charging the maximum possible prices. Today’s fare was just Yuk and a waste of money as we binned it. 🤢

The best takeaway of fish and chips we've had in a long time. The food was lovely and hot, the batter on the fish was crispy and the fish was delicious. It was obviously a busy time at the shop but the staff worked hard to keep things flowing smoothly and no-one had to wait more than ten minutes. Will definitely go there again next time we come to The Gower.

Visited a couple of times and tried the cod in batter and the breaded plaice. Wife proffered the plaice, myself the cod. One order was enough for the two of us, plentiful. Great fish and chips, would recommend.

We buy our fish dinners here. Huge portions and good value. Sunday lunchtime you can eat in or have a takeaway Sunday roast with all the trimmings for £7.95. Lovely grub. Great value too. But you need a big appetite to finish everything!

We went to Roma for food on Wednesday and was really shocked at the poor food we had.. the chips felt like they were reheated from dinner time and the rissole was tasteless. Really disappointed and surprised at the quality of the food.

We had food here this week for the first time in a while, we were so looking forward to having cockles in batter as we have had before but we're told by the two young staff in there at the time they are no longer doing cockles in batter as they are to small...ok fair enough. Instead we opted for Rissole and chips and a large sausage in batter and chips.....what a disappointment!! The chips were like left overs the Rissole was awful and although we asked for salt and vinegar on are food I think there must be a shortage of these condimentsas we had practically none. So my partner bought a bottle of there vinegar so we could then put as much or as little as we wanted......well that was a huge disappointment too! Now my partner doesn't mind a bit of vinegar but when i asked him to but a drop on his finger even he said it just tasted of water. Honestly what has happened to this place!?? Save your money and your time and go else where....we are!

First impressions very good . Friendly staff and fish cooked to order . Asked for a large fish and normal portion of chips . Over £9:00 in money for a piece of fish which in my opinion was not a large battered piece of fish . Chips ok . Considering the fish was cooked to order the batter was soggy . Great fish and chip shop in the heart of Penclawdd village. Good selection of chip shop fayre. Huge parking area opposite with a kids' playground and an ice cream parlor and bar opposite that. Try the Penclawdd cockles and lava bread. Delicious.

Visited here as it was across the road from our hotel for the evening called the estuary. Nice and clean chip shop loads and loads of food ready to go no waiting around, I wish I tryed the battered cockles but maybe next time. Menu reasonably priced, the two girls were helpful and knowledge about the area and even give me a taxi no for later that evening to go to the rake and griddle....

The cod fish, amazingly fresh lovely taste perfect. The batter, Oh My To Die For. They have nailed it. I don't normally eat all the batter I did! Went last night, just so happy to enjoy Great Welsh Fish and Chips. Lovely staff, friendly, great to chat with as your fish is being freshly cooked just for you! We add a great range of chippy classics - plaice, cod, battered sausages and loads of chips - very tasty.It's a busy place with a good ticket number system when the queue is out the door. Good value and very friendly staff.If I'm back in the area I would not hesitate getting dinner from here again.

One of the nicest fish I have tasted in quite a while!!! The chips not so good just about cooked. The view and fish made the chips seem nothing.

Unsure where to actually queue as customers standing everywhere. When you get served you are given a number to wait until you are called yo say your food is ready. Don’t know why they don’t just serve people as they go along? Long wait for food. Chips not the best. Won’t be rushing back.

After an afternoon on the beach exploring rock pools on the beautiful Gower Peninsula we asked the grandchildren what they fancied for tea. Fish n chips and nuggets and chips and they said. So off we went to the Roma Fish Bar at Penclawdd. Wow!! Absolutely superb, freshly cooked, piping hot, excellent batter, loads of chips and a friendly service. We sat in the car park opposite by the salt marshes to eat them. What could be better!!!!

Got to chippie around 8 oclock - it was still busy lots of people waiting, organised fish fryer asking for people wanting fish so he could start cooking it to order while you waited to be served. 2 staff serving and more in back room but was so busy still had to wait 10 min or so.Opted for cardboard try/boxes - lined with greaseproof paper to take away as we were eating in carpark opposite with friends. Great chips - i had a pie wife had small fish and was plenty..

It had been a long day on the coast and decided to finish it off with some chips etc. My wife fancied a cheeseburger the sign said all burgers come with Coleslaw & Salad NO THEY DON’T all she had was a burger in a bun with a very small sprinkle of cheese she ate half and binned the rest. My meal was Pie & Chips with a Rissole the walk of 200 yds to the car on the foreshore took less than two minutes but by then after eventually after opening 3 sheets of paper found that all the breadcrumbs had stuck to said paper and here’s the clue paper not grease proof. The Pie was fine made by someone else other than Roma so couldn’t spoil that but then came the chips remember the Rissole yes on opening another 3 sheets of paper not two minutes later mind find a mound of what can only be described at fried mash. I struggled on but refrained from feeding the multitude of gathering Seagulls and binned most of it bar the Pie. Moral is if you want Paper ( not grease proof ) go to the Roma Fish Bar in Penclawdd but if you want food try elsewhere.

Excellent freshly cooked fish and chips. Use Roma regularly and always have good fish and chips. Large chips are massive so we normally share the chips.

A friend and I were motorcycle touring around Gower today and stopped st the Roma Shop, Penclawdd. We were at the door at 11.40am but it was closed even though 11.30 am is opening time. It was cold and there were 2 people inside - they clearly saw us but took no notice after about 10 minutes what seemed to be the manager came to the door and just turned the sign making no effort to open the door or welcome us. He didn’t smile and gave us a most unwelcome look. We went in and no attempt was made to serve us - I made a joke saying - it’s ok to smile! He simply turned around and ignored us. His assistant looked surprised - I said well I’m not eating here, far to grumpy and we left. We are both mature riders in our 60’s and I have never encountered such negativity - shame asi have eaten here before and it was good. Perhaps the Roma is not biker friendly or doesn’t like older motorcyclists. I won’t be recommending this place to others in the clubs.

Have loved every meal I have had from both the Roma fish bars, the staff working there are always up for a chat. The restaurant section is nice and the food is just amazing. I live near so it is my go-to for a quite dinner after work.

Have to say, best fish and chips I've had in a long time. The batter was crispy, the fish firm and the large chips were enormous! Would recommend scaling back on the chip order when you have large. We had loads left over. The rest of the family has scampi which was its usual predictable self

Stopped in for food after travelling down from Berkshire on a Friday night - was not disappointed! I've seen a few reviews complaining about the quality of the chips, saying they are soggy and stick together, and that the batter is too greasy on the fish. To those people, I say: what on earth are you looking for from a fish and chip shop?! The fish and chip shop is one of the last places you can reliably get chips that are a bit soggy and greasy, and Roma Fish Bar's were absolutely delicious. I had a battered sausage, which was beautifully grease-laden, and I'm reliably informed that the fish was equally tasty.Apart from the lamentable fact that they allowed one of my friends to buy four portions of curry sauce (since, as we all know, curry sauce is an abomination and deserves to be banned), I have precisely zero complaints. The portions were massive too - more than we could manage - while at the same time being a very reasonable price.Would definitely recommend!

Have stopped here a few times due to convenience and the hope that we will get a decent bag of chips. Unfortunately every time they have just fallen short. Always rushed, the chips are soggy and stick together in a big mound and have that raw taste, the batter is always swimming in fat and soggy. Take your time and give them a few minutes longer.... people are more than happy to wait for a decent bag of chips especially when that is your main selling point.

The chips were really greasy and didn’t taste very nice, this isn’t the first time either. The batter on the fish was incredibly soggy and inedible. The only positive I can say is that the portions are very generous. I never write reviews but in this case the chips were so bad I felt the need to. You don’t mind if the chips are greasy if they actually tasted nice that would be something.

Exactly what the title says. Genuine, straight up traditional fish and chips. And the perfect example of a proper Welsh fish and chip shop...faggots, rissoles, battered cockles, saveloys, gravy etc.. And the perfect spot to eat them, on the estuary. Top marks.

Lovely chip shop also does other things such as jacket potato. They do sell little portraits. Well recommended

Have just had excellent fish and chips once again Since moving to Penclawdd I have be to Roma quite frequently over the last three months and they have been consistently excellent. With this very high standard, I cant inderstand how they could be criticised by other reviewers.Keep it up guys...you are doing a great job!

I like this chip shop so I don't want it to detriorate , but the cooking is becoming inconsistent , I am no expert but suspect items are being plunged in sometimes when fat is not hot enough , the result being too much absorbtion of fat in the food . Two plaice last night oozing oil and chips wappy , again too much oil absorbed . Time before was Ok but prior to that too much oil again , consistency gents is what keeps us coming back .

ROMA fish and chips are legendary in the Gorseinon and local areas. This place is on the corner before you run through the village of Penclawdd on your way to the beaches of North Gower. There is a car park directly opposite and great to stop and eat your fish and chips in the paper as the tide comes in up the river on a fine day. Very friendly staff as in all ROMA restaurants

As you can see from my other reviews, I don’t give bad ratings. But this places main selling point is fish & chips and they can’t cook chips. I’ve tried the chips here maybe 3/4 times now and every time they’ve been a disappointment. All stuck together, some burnt and others so thin they’re like crisps. Compared to the other Roma chip shops in Gorseinon this place is no where near they’re standard. They could do with a new manager to get the place back up to a good standard. How anyone has rated this place as excellent just baffles me. Given it a few chances but I won’t be returning to this place again any time soon.

Super fish and chips from this spotlessly clean cafe. The chips were crispy, like the lovely batter on the fish! The portion of fish was a good size, and the piece I had was chunky and well cooked. Had as a take a way, and ate them outside over looking a beautiful estuary - fab!

The food is usually of a good standard , certainly better than most others around and if that means a higher price then fair enough . However recently I suspect they are joining in the smaller portion for same price a la Toblerone , would rather they stuck with good size portions and if needed increase the cost a little .

This place became a regular place to pop in to on the way back to our holiday cottage. Always busy because the food is so good. The fish was just delicious. Can't rate this place enough.

Amazing fish bar, huge cue and that's because this place is just the best. Brilliant system of service holding a ticket waiting your turn. Helpful staff really know what they are doing. We had chicken and Faggots and it was just perfect. We also tried deep fried cockles and they were delicious! Very happy customers will return !( chicken cut up )

Excellent chip shop, go here every time we are in town. We ordered large chips, large cod and large battered sausage and that was just right for the two of us. It's right on the corner of the main road through penclawdd but the is parking opposite next to the park Highly recommend open mon-sat from march to Dec

Chips were horrid and mixed in were burnt chips and burnt bits from earlier cooking maybe? Can't remember a time I had a bag of poor chips first and last visit will not return!

Lovely chip shop, portion sizes are big so if you're a couple who don't eat much, a large portion of chips will probably feed both of you. If you've never tried them before, order a portion of battered cockles, they taste far better than they sound!

The food was amazing, cheap, and insanely fast. We were staying at the nearby Lyndon Cottage and thankfully only discovered this place late into our visit, or we would have eaten every meal here! Just really good fish and chips, with a surprising amount of vegetarian options to boot. A real gem.

We travel the world and love our seafood. We stopped in on our travels and WOW, what a surprise. It has to be the best takeaway fish and chips we have ever had. Even beats fish on the rocks at mariners warf in houtbay our home town.

I like it here - the staff are always courteous - the place is always immaculate - and the wait times are minimal. Food is always gorgeous - well worth a visit

The fish shop was taken over by the owners of the Roma chain a few years ago, the previous owners having retired. The food is good and always fresh. The location is good, in the middle of the village, and there is car parking across the road.

When planning our trip to the Gower Peninsula, I came across a fish and chip takeaway close to a car park, with a view. As we live in Spain, we miss the simple things in life, so we stopped for a takeaway lunch on the way to our cottage. The staff were very friendly, and we were served two portions of cod and chips, which we took back to the car, and had a picnic. The chips were well done, and looked and tasted like chips used to, brown and crunchy. The fish was the best we have had for some time, and the helpings were enormous. Unfortunately, we had to leave some of the chips for the gulls and did not eat again that day. On our first visit, I noticed an advert for Battered Cockles. We went back a few days later and shared a portion of the freshly harvested and fried cockles. They were lovely and one portion provided us with an adequate lunch. We both agree that if we lived in Penclawdd we would not bother to cook fish and chips at home.
