Rock Salt and Sole in Aberdeenshire

Very good fish & chips. Used to frequent another chip shop in the area. However, it has been less impressive of late with quite tasteless chips. The chips at Rock salt &sole were really tasty, as was the fish. We'll definitely be using this chippy again.

Popped in with family whilst on hols in Banchory as recommended. Service was excellent . Hubby and I had the over 60s special which was Haddock, chips , choice of peas , pot of tea and bread and butter . We opted for mushy peas . There was a choice of cod if preferred. Daughter had haddock too which could have been upped to large if required but portions were generous so not required . We also had a portion of onion rings which were plentiful and by far the best we had ever tasted . All food was cooked and crisped to perfection . We were also offered a pot of home made tartare sauce which I had and very tasty . Large pot of good strong tea washed all of this down . We sat in but there was takeaway option was available too . All in all I can heartily recommend this eatery for food, service and price

First class service. This was our second visit while visiting the area and on both occasions we have no complaint and plenty of praise. We chose to sit in rather than take out and the haddock and Scampi was first class. The batter on the haddock was light and ‘dry’. Would recommend to anyone visiting Banchory and like s ‘fish supper’

Bought a freshly prepared haddock supper. I’ve never tasted better. The batter on the fish melted in your mouth. The staff were very friendly.

The best fish and chips I've ever eaten. Fish was fresh and tasty, the batter was so light and crispy. Chips were good too. Sit-in costs a bit more than take-away but that's okay, home-made tartare sauce was excellent, best mushy peas ever (still had some texture and not too much vinegar) and individual glass jars of ketchup. Staff friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Was so impressed with the friendly and helpful Paul who runs the restaurant/takeaway and makes the most delicious fish and chips ever I had a light bite supper perfect portion for a pensioner like me and I ate every last morsel 10 out or 10 Paul

Stopped off here for fish suppers with family and friends. Ordered six suppers in advance and they were freshly cooked when we arrived to collect. Lovely chat with the owner. Very attentive to our gluten free requirements, even down to the vinegar! All the food was extremely tasty. Would highly recommend and will definitely visit again if in this area in future.

We went to Rock Salt and Sole on Sunday 11th Oct for our supper. What a brilliant service and food. Their covid procedures worked well (we pre-booked and collected), and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The best bit was when we got to the top of Cairn O' Mount to eat them and watch the fading sun over Grampian because the fish and chips were delicious; chips and batter weren't greasy, batter was crisp and golden, fish was fresh. I usually have sauce on mine but for the first time none was required. I come from a family of fish and chip owners so like to do the taste test and be be honest I've not tasted better in Grampian. It really was a super supper, thoroughly recommended.

Complete con artists. Got £4 worth of ice creams for the kids, said I’d pop to the cash point as I didn’t have change (£10 minimum spend for cards). Very nice older chap (Or so i thought) said not to worry he’d put it through anyway. Wasn’t until my bank statement came through I realised he’d over charged me by £36!!! Over charging may help balance the books but trust me we locals you are doing it too will never offer you repeat custom and neither will our familys. STOP deliberately over charging.

Dog friendly and people friendly!! Fun and courteous staff, great food and service! Fresh produce and tasty homemade sauces.

Lovely food but we were overcharged by £11 which will put us off going back. We didn’t realise until we had left in fairness to them them. They’re very customer friendly, this is our only complaint.

As we drove to Braemar so that my daughter could do research on the river Dee we noticed Rock, Salt and Sole. We decided to stop by and had the best fish and chips we have ever had. It is a year since we discovered this wonderful place. As we were visiting our family again in Banchory we could not have our Fish and Chips without visiting Paul and his staff. Just like last year, there was a Homely welcome from Paul and time for a catch-up after i placed my order. Everything is made fresh when you place your order, so as the food was prepared and cooked I had the opportunity to catch up with Paul again. He is a genuine Man and even asked after my GrandKids who he met last year and made them Shakes, he even remembered their order ! This was really impressive ! So to our order , we had fish and chips, thankfully the smaller portions , which were more than enough for us. The menu is varied and plentiful , they are many food options and they also cater for people who need a Gluten Free Diet , this is a Passion of Paul's wife who is the very capable chef ! Unfortunately on this visit to Banchory we could only visit once , Sorry Paul , but we are already looking forward to our next time. Paul and Staff, keep doing what you are doing , everything is perfect ! Hopefully we'll see you all again soon. :-)

reasonable fish supper but chips not crisp, Fish good batter so so. Staff friendly and shop was clean

We should have rung ahead as then gluten free fryer need warming up, but it was worth the wait chatting to the man in charge. We had 3 normal Fish and Chips and one gluten free , all were excellent.

Went for dinner the other night. We decided to sit in. I'm Gluten intollerant, so a fish and chip shop is not always the best choice for me.I was served the best gluten free battered fish I have ever had! The batter was light and crispy. Paul, our waiter was very helpful and friendly. My partners fish supper was equally as good as mine.

We were staying in a nearby hotel while attending a Geocaching event nearby. I have to say the fish and chips here were fab. The owner even did breaded fish for our 2 year old as we didn't want him to gave the batter. We finished off our meal with some really nice ice creams. Even if your not looking for chips you should visit here for the ice creams.

We popped in to Rock, Salt & Sole half an hour before closing time and ended up staying for nearly two hours.Paul is the host with the most and Jen and staff couldn’t have been nicer. The fish tea was amazing, they have state of the art fryers which combined with the home made tartar sauce really hit the spot. If you visit please try the home made Gelato and the coffees. Everything is home made and cooked from fresh to perfection. Paul especially could brighten anyone’s day and his obvious enthusiasm for the food he serves really shines through. We thought we were just popping in for a quick chippie tea that would be so-so and ended up having one of the tastiest meals we have ever had. Absolutely brilliant.

We visited 3 times during July and each time it was great. Super selection of hot food, snacks, cakes, bagels with choice of fillings. I’m a bagel lover and you get a choice with these, I also am a decaf coffee drinker and unusually their decaf was really good. I’m accustomed to being presented with a watery taste free version of a real coffee, but not here. Best decaf I’ve had.The Cranachan cake went down well with my sons girlfriend and the lentil soup was delicious.Well worth a trip if you’re on the area.

Take away fish & chips. Large portions and very tasty. Served by friendly staff. Reasonable prices. They also have a sit in option. They close at 8 or 8.30 which seems a bit early for a chippy but otherwise no complaints.

Visited here yesterday for takeaway meals. Fish was appalling, Covered in hardly any batter and small in size as were the chips. The other 2 meals weren't much better either. Not very good value for money. Having read other reviews about the staff being welcoming, I am sad to say this wasn't the case for us. Very unwelcoming and curt. Won't be using this place again.

Lovely warm welcome. Sit down facility and table service available, but we chose the take away. A Fish and Chip shop catering for Gluten Free Fish and Chips daily a Goldmine. Home made Tartar sauce very tasty. Recommend this for Celiacs.

Fish and chips excellent quality and crispy batter. The home made tartare sauce was to die for. Very hospitable staff. I would recommend to anyone who appreciates good food, to give Paul and his staff a visit.

I came in with my girlfriend for some food on our way home . It was amazing! Service was fast and super friendly. I had the breaded fish which was the freshest tasting fish i have ever had it was crispy and not oily at all . I also had the mushy peas which are amazing and you can tell they are homemade. My girlfriend had the burger which was the best burger either of us have ever had . Would definitely recommend if you are in banchory.

Great fish & chips and generous portion sizes. We thoroughly enjoyed the lemon & pepper fish goujons for starters. These were served with salad & a lovely tartare sauce. The proprietor was very friendly & staff promptly put the heating on to ensure we were comfortable whilst we had our meal.

I dined at Rock, Salt & Sole last night and have to say that it was the best ever haddock and chips that I’ve ever tasted. The fish was extremely fresh, and the batter was delicious. The chips were perfect too, nicely cooked and a great taste. I asked the owner about the cooking process and he very kindly showed me some fish fillets, and explained the how you tell how fresh the fish is and also how to cook it so that you get consistently excellent results. It’s definitely a lot more than just chucking stuff in a fryer - if it’s done properly (as it is at Rock, Salt & Sole) then it’s actually a food science. I’ll conclude by saying don’t take my word for it, go check it out for yourself. These guys really are passionate about what they do, and clearly know what they’re doing! Will definitely be back, cheers!

There are 3 chip shops in Banchory and this is my least favourite. Grumpy staff and food not to the best standard

Excellent fish and chips (with the best tartare sauce!) and super friendly stuff! You also should try the homemade ice cream :).

I’m a local to banchory and came to the new chipper with my friends, the second we walked in the smell of the restaurant was absolutely terrible!! I ordered a scoop of ice cream in a tub and for £2.50, the size of the ice cream scoop was smaller than half of your average ice cream!! i was absolutely shocked and when i asked if i could have sprinkles, the man serving me replied with “i don’t know, can you?”, I found this extremely rude as the comment was very unnecessary.Will definitely not be returning ever again!!!

As recommended by a family member we thought we would try this new cafe and take away. It didn't open til 1pm on Saturday but we were happy to wait. The welcome was very friendly and welcoming. We were first in so no problems getting seated. The battered fish were excellent. Light crispy batter and fish done to perfection. The home made tartare was lovely too. There were delicious Arran ice creams to follow. The seating is functional not luxurious buy hey ho it was a really nice meal. Pop in next time you are in Banchory. They do lots of other food too which would suit most palates.

Had the large Haddock and chips. Fresh tasty fish with batter that was not saturated in grease. Chips were not greasy either. Mushy peas and tartare sauce very good too. Friendly staff and owner.

What a great surprise, this place source their own fish daily and never from frozen. Everything is made to order and while it may take a little longer, you can definitely tell the difference. My son has severe allergies and for the first time was able to eat the chips (which are also freshly made to order). Service is great and straight from the owners, who are also very friendly. This place is a gem and we’ll definitely be back.

I was recommended this place but was very disappointed! Fish was okay, not great. The chips werent great, unsure if they add something to the batter but had a funny taste. Heinz tomato sauce bottle did not have heinz tomato sauce in it. Service was okay, not very friendly and overall was overpriced for the not great food we got.Wont be going back or recommending

Jings, crivens and helpmabob, this is a wee stotter. Fantastic fish, very fresh and very tasty. Eldest judged it the best fish and chips he’s ever had, “and to be fair, I eat a lot of fish and chips”. Youngest inhaled her scampi in about ten seconds, which she never normally does. Well worth it.

Maybe I caught them on a bad day as I have enjoyed their food before but this time my fish portion surprised me. It was about the size of a pie, square in shape. The chips were stale also. Fish tasted nice enough but I just felt ripped off somehow, though I tried not feel so. Never happened to me before anywhere. Anyway, just feedback for the restaurant.

Visited here when the more pretentious Cowshed decided to close for a private function - and glad that we did. The fish was fresh and sweet, the chips light and the service was exactly what service should be. Could not be faulted and also excellent value - apparently has only been in business a year - I wish them every success!

I was determined to have a good fish and chips on our trip to scotland, I passed by many,many shops simply because of the smell of overused oil/fat. This place has hit the nail on the head , with feather light batter and super fresh fish .You can find bigger and cheaper all over scotland but you'd be hard pushed to find this excellent quality. I will be back !

In my opinion - best lunch place in eastern Scotland, if You hungry go there, For fish and chips or hamburger.

I would not normally comment on a fish and chip shop but this justifies a mention. We happened to come across it when visiting the Aberdeen area. We took advantage of the pensioners special which was a fair size and served with bread and tea. The food was freshly prepared and as good fish and chips that we have had for some time. the staff were helpful and as we had a bit of a wait for our food to be served we were given free ice cream which again was excellent.This is well worth a visit

We stopped by mid afternoon and were in time to take advantage of the Lunch time Pensioners Special.We were not disappointed, nice portion of fish in their delicious light batter with an equally pleasing portion of chips. The dish included bread, butter and tea. the bread was super fresh and the tea pot easily held 8 cups, more than enough for our needs.The staff was very welcoming and friendly and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our visit.The bathroom was spotless , as in fact was the restaurant.In conclusion, we had a really good visit and shortly we will go again to enjoy their delicious food.

Fresh cooked to order, not greasy at all really enjoyed the fish supper and the owner was really friendly and chatty - even gave our dog a free sausage just for looking pretty.

Visited Rock, Salt & Sole this sunny evening. Greeted by friendly staff who were more than happy to help.I can quite honestly say I had one of the nicest fish and chip meals I’ve ever had. The batter was so thin and crisp. The fish was super tasty and as fresh as too. The chips were really tasty and not greasy in the slightest. The tartare sauce tasted so fresh and delicious. I personally felt the portions were good too :-) I couldn’t help but see the ice-cream menu, I just had to have a Knickerbocker glory and it was really very good. My friend and I had a really enjoyable, delicious meal and a relaxing evening. I would highly recommend a visit and great value for money. Happy customers :-)

Ordered two fish and chip suppers to takeaway.Paid with £20 note and change given was £2.40. Service was good. Disappointed with the fish supper. Very greasy and fish on the small side considering what we paid.Unfortunately will not return.

We enjoy fish and chips and know good from average. Our fish suppers were good but despite having a large and normal we were disappointed with the size. We normally go to the competition i.e. the Cowshed but went here for a change. The large fish was the size of a normal at the Cowshed and the normal one was more akin to a Pensioners portion. The 'large' one had L written on the box, just as well as we would never have guessed from the fish! Please note we are not persuaded by volume over quality it was just all a little bit meagre! We would go back but hopefully the management will pay attention to reviews and be a bit more reasonable with the portions. PS - we are not alone in this view as we mentioned it to friends and they said the same thing.

Was passing through Banchory last weekend and as we had had such a good meal last year we stopped here again. Once again we had lovely food and service. The place is very clean and we certainly recommend that you pop in and try for yourselves. Next time we are in Banchory we will be back :)

Siamo entrati per puro caso e abbiamo trovato un proprietario gentile e disponibile che ci ha accolto con calore. Il pesce freschissimo era buonissimo, lo ha mangiato persino mia figlia che a casa non lo mangia mai. Inoltre ci ha fatto anche un espresso in tazza piccola. Lo consiglio vivamente.

This has to be the best chipper along deeside and well worth a stop heading back from a day out.Fish and chips were delicious, and great value for money... I was so full after. The fish was also really fresh. The staff are really friendly and you'll come out with a tasty meal and a smile!

Beautifully fresh food served in a stylish restaurant with ice cream to die for! The fish melted in the mouth and the homemade mushy peas and tartare sauce really took it from ordinary to extra special. Proper Italian gelato reminded me of holidays in the sun, we will be back again and again

After a 10 hour drive from London and looking for somewhere substantial to eat lunch we stumbled upon this little fish and chip shop. Delicious fish and chips cooked fresh for us as soon as we walked through the door. Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here would definitely recommend. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to take any pictures as we ate so quick.

Friendly and very clean. Ice cream is wonderful, especially the rhubarb. I took visiting friends who loved the fish and chips and the great folk who run it.

Had a wee visit to Banchory,and came across Rock Salt and Sole restaurant. Very friendly , was welcomed in and served quickly .We both had Fish and chips which was lovely , the batter was nice and light , would definitely be going back The also sell gelato which the owner let me sample first ! Well worth a visit if I do say so myself .

Www had 2 regular and 2 gluten free fish suppers. Both were fantastic, tasted great, generous portions. Lovely gluten free batter, probably the best we've had.

Stopped here an route to Aberdeen and will be back. Excellent service from the young lad who served us first and from the Manager who followed up to see if we were happy with meal etc. He even went to the bother of refilling our teapot and adding fresh teabags to boot. He also added a tartar sauce for my husband to try with his fish. It's not been open long so decoration and layout look good, as well as the clean tables and clean surroundings. Not much in the way of vegetarian selection apart from a deep fried vegie burger which I couldn't have eaten. However I am sure if I had asked for a grilled vegie burger they would have accommodated this. Enjoyable meal and good price.

I’ll admit to some local bias towards Blackpool/Lytham here, but me and the hubby used to love a weekend fish & chips sit-down meal with a cup of tea and all the trimmings. Had despaired a little since moving to Scotland of finding a really good quality place (which is crazy when you think of how much fresh fish there should be in the area!). Anyway, we had a fantastic lunch at Rock Salt & Sole today with such warm and friendly service, good chat and really good quality, fresh fish in crisp batter. The portions were generous, mushy peas and tartare sauce are homemade and the gelato ice-cream was lovely.Chuffed to have this little place in Banchory. We’ll be weekend regulars in future!

It’s so good to have great food and a friendly host. This is a small place but one which we’ve gone back to due to the friendliness of the staff and the fresh fish. Worth a visit either as a sit-in or takeaway, just try it out.

I'd love to report the food as mediocre in order to receive a refund from the staff who I had a bet with but it would be a lie. I detest frozen fish and chip shops choosing profit over quality. Not here. The fish was excellent and the chips even better. Friendly staff, very clean establishment and lovely fresh food. Keep the high standards going folks.

Sadly, both the service and the food let it down. The service was grumpy and the opposite of welcoming. We were bossed around, and treatment bordered on arrogance.Our order took ages to be prepared. Both my wife and I felt ill after eating it. Fish was dry and the batter burnt. Chips were more or less raw, some still cold. As we live just down the road, we really looked forward to having a good chipper a short walk away. One visit, but not again.

It’s located right next to the Church of Scotland in the town of Banchory.We had a wonderful lunch. It’s a small, cosy and simple set up with great food, efficient and a friendly service from host Jennifer and Teresa.There is vegetarian option and I had vegetarian burger served with salad and chips. My other friends had fish, scampi and sausages and they thoroughly enjoyed their meal. The batter is light and crispy.Prices are very reasonable and affordable. It’s cheaper with the take away menu. There is also a fish & chips deal for seniors.They serve good coffee and hot chocolate with marshmallows. Last but not least to finish off the meal with, a smooth and creamy Artisan ice cream.A place recommended for a full quick meal.

Tried this when it opened , very good , sadly fish not 100% fresh today and batter tasted burned and bitter - didn’t have chips . Come on guys change or filter that oil u have a great product but keep it fresh - a lot of competition out there .

We live locally and only found this great restaurant by accident but we were absolutely stunned at how good everything was. Excellent food, super service, quality products delivered to a very high standard and marvellous staff. I had lobster and my husband had haddock and chips with mushy peas. The home made tartare sauce is delicious. We will definitely be back now we've found this amazing restaurant selling fresh off the boat fish and seafood. Go, you will love it!!

Stopped here whilst passing through Banchory. It had newly opened and was very clean and fresh. The fish was lovely and fresh. The young lad that served us was friendly and very polite :) We even had room for ice creams after - they were lovely too!Would definitely stop past if in the area again.

Arrived here after a long journey ... ordered the freshest haddock I've ever tasted with the lightest crispest batter. Chips and mushy peas were simply perfect .Not overly priced , very clean , warm & welcoming staff.Noticed it became busy very quickly after I took this pic .Of course I couldn't leave without having an ice cream ....lovely .Looking forward to my return visit

Not too bad. Everything apart from the chips tasted fine. The chips tasted like they'd been through the frier a few times. The batter on my Haggis pudding was very nice. Decent sized portions. Didn't wait overly long. I'll probably go back.Not related to the food but I didn't like the rustic timber seat in the waiting area - too easy for kids to snag clothes on (as my kids did!).

My mom amd I went there to get Fish &Chips after a long day in town.Place is new and cool, they are very friendly...Even with the sting of a wasp while i was waiting our food. They quickly help with. I 100% recommend this place for a nice ice cream ( they gave me as a treat for my painful wasp adventure) I love the salted caramel ice cream. And the fish and chips was lovely.Is a place that for sure i will back.

I took my Grandchildren to the newest spot in Banchory. The exterior looked inviting But when we walked in we found a barricade of chairs and 2 signs NO TOILET ULESS YOU ARE A CUSTOMER and also Tables and Seats are only for Dine in Customers. I found this very rude. Nevertheless we were not there for a meal but simply Ice Cream. The Ice cream counter is located a scant 3/4 feet from the well of Fish and chip friers, The odour of overheated oil permeated the air.The three of us each ordered an ice cream and we were asked small or larg cup. I said a cone. The server shrugged. So I presumed cones were not yet available. He served our ice creams and as he moved to the till I saw the cones behind him? I asked him and was told oh I did not see them.At the outside I took a spoon of my ice cream? it was supposed to be Traditional Iron Brew. That was what the hand written card said. It tasted like Chip Fat. As I headed this comment even a starter cook learns very fast that Dairy Products like Ice Cream pick up unsavourary flavours that may be about. Even my grand kids said their Ice Cream tasted FUNNY. On the health and safety side I did not see one sign advising that Nuts were in some Ice Creams and NONE at all whether the Fryer Fat was Peanut Oil Rapeseed or Vegetable oil. It did smell an awful lot like Ghee or over heated Fat. A very poor experience if only for an ice CreamA.Robby McRobb
