I’m over 60 and used to eat pie and mash twice weekly in East Ham in the 60’s and 70’s at Robins in East Ham High St or at Nathan’s on the Barking Rd at the Boleyn. Today the Pies were hot, fresh and tasty. Mash was mash. Disappointed with stewed eels (unpleasant texture and no flavour - reconstituted frozen maybe- not the unctuousness of days gone by). The liquor tastes if nothing any more. Nice try but average.

First time in a while & left feeling disappointed, ordered 2 x 2 pies & mash with two cans of drink that came to £23 but the size of the pies seem to be getting smaller and the mash portions was so small that you could have fitted all on a saucer instead of being on a massive oval plate that looked ridiculous.

Ridiculously small portions of single pie and mash. A TOTAL RIP OFF!!!! We eat pie and mash in London regularly but this place was the WORST PIE & MASH WE HAVE EVER HAD IN 30 YEARS OF EATING PIE & MASH AS LONDONERS!!! The pies were very small, the mash had lots of bits and ‘black eyes’ in it from the potato. It was ‘grainy’ where there was a lack of seasoning or butter etc. The liquor was like water and didn’t look anything like liquor. We had to purchase double pies & double mash each to get a proper size portion as the single pie and mash was a joke! Even my 6 year old was still hungry after. In addition the place was dirty with tables empty with dirty plates and rubbish. We had to ask staff to clear the table. ROBINS SOUTHEND ON SEA YOU NEED TO STEP IT UP! It was Halloween Parade day and this place was half empty on a Saturday afternoon so clearly something is very wrong here. We WOULD DEFINITELU NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE, PORTIONS ARE RIDICULOYSLY TINY AND IT TASTED BLAND WITH LIQUOR THAT WAS LIKE DIRTY WATER. How embarrassing serving this to customers. £4.50 for a tiny pie & liquor and £9.00 FOR DOUBLE DOUBLE! A COMPLETE RIP OFF. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!

I popped into Southend and was not aware of Robins Pie and Mash as they are in a side street. I remember Robins from the 70's when I use to live in East Ham. On entry the shop is super clean, the young lady was constantly cleaning down surfaces. The ambience was that of a typical pie and mash shop, wooden benches, Formica tables, it evoked many memories. The staff were incredibly friendly and a special mention to Alfie who was a top fella. Sorry I didn’t know the young ladies name but she was an asset to the shop. I ordered 2 pies and one mash with gravy and a can of coke. It all came to £8 which was not out of the way for a decent dinner. The pies and mash was served up and I was not disappointed. The pastry was crisp and light, the filling was quality mince and the gravy was plentiful. It was all so tasty I even ordered a takeaway after my meal to take home to the wife with a portion of Liquor. I will definitely return when I am in Southend, this should not be missed.

I really like Robins. Everyone who works there is welcoming in an easy, natural way. It’s always spotless. Like many others, my roots are in East London and eating here brings back great memories. I'm 63. And have visited a lot of pie and mash shops. With my love of jellied eels. I have been a regular visitor all over the country. So please tell me what was in their pies it tasted close to Ransed.... the mash was like the lumpy mash potato that you had at school. Very lumpy. The only ok part was the liquor. I also had a portion of jellied eels. They were ok. I have never given a bad review before. But really. Only 3 ingredients. It's not to much to ask for a proper pie. Not the ones you get from the supermarket. It should have minced meat. And not much else. Very very disappointed.!!!

I usually visit the Restaurant round the corner for Pie & Mash which isn't bad, so was hoping this time to try something better...... if it lived up to Manzies..... yea !!!!!!However it didn't. I had 2 Pies & Liquor and decided to take 3 Pies back with Liquor for the family.I wish I had eaten the Pie & Mash first.I noticed the Pies were a little well done, but it just wasn't the Pastry, the Mince inside tasted Burnt, very strange.Must say, when I got home same opinion.I miss a really good Pie & Mash in Southend, sadly Robins for me was not a great experience and one I would return too.

Visited Southend on Monday and saw robins pie and mash, looked like the real thing. Tiled walls, bench seats and limited menu. We were told pies were made there so we tried them. Pie, mash and liquor. They also sell eels . Best pies we have had for ages, nice thin, crisp pastry that melts in your mouth. Where we live it's not possible to buy and we often travel into London to have this meal. Can recommend its the authentic taste and the service is swift and friendly.

My wife and I had the pleasure of my mother-in-law's company yesterday and spent a few hours in Southend. As an east end lass she was brought up on the traditional pie & mash shops of that area in the post war decades. I had never experienced a proper pie & mash shop but was more than happy to give it a go being a lover of anything that involves pastry. The seating and tables were traditional with narrow, double sided benches between the rectangular tables. The décor was clean with framed photographs of the East End characters and Robin's history. It was counter service and the staff were very friendly. We all went for double pie, mash & liquor(a kind of parsley gravy) and it was even more enjoyable than I would have hoped. The pies were filled with minced beef and the pastry was surprisingly thin, which made it light and very moreish. The mash was filling, smooth & delicious. Although I'd normally associate parsley sauce with fish the parsley liquor complimented the pie and mash beautifully. I would heartily recommend Robins and look forward to my next visit. They also do eels but I wasn't brave enough to try those!

Reminds me of childhood with my East End family roots.Too many of the current "pretenders" struggle to re create the mixture of food, atmosphere, and service quality of the historic London Pie & Mash Shops but Robins appear to have succeeded on all counts. I haven't visited their other locations/shops but assume that this is consistent throughout.Had "double pie and mash" and pies were tasty with the liquor an excellent consistency.Restaurant was clean and service good and the lack of knives in the cutlery tray a clear indicator that this was a "proper" Pie & Mash Shop.Highly recommended for day trippers to Southend and locals alike, close to sea front and High Street.

We came in on Wednesday 16th, with a disabled young man. The meat was good, but Yorkshire puddings were rock hard. Full of air. The veg was overcooked the peas where like bullets. But I went into the ladies' toilets and how disgusting it was. The toilet brush was absolutely awful. If the toilet is like that, what is the kichen? I took a picture. Will show you!!! I wonder what the company would think if there had done an inspection?
