Robatary in Wakefield

Attended on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant was less than a quarter full. The car park across the road is free on a Sunday and just a two minute walk away. There is parking on the road outside the restaurant, but spaces are limited. This restaurant doesn't know what it wants to be and as a result it doesn't quite do it's dishes justice. Are you Indian, Japanese, English, Thai... What? Don't get me wrong, it's edible, but it just didn't stand out. I feel they were trying to offer too much variation in the menu and not able to really focus down on getting each dish spot on. Starters average £8-9 and are tiny. Mains thankfully have better portion sizes and offer better value for money. However, I actually got bored eating the ramen noodles and left half of it, it was uninspired and the amount of meat was minimal. I would of been lucky if there was half of one small chicken breast worth of meat in it. I suggest they cut down the bowl size and increase the meat content for that dish? Sadly, the toilets were a bit of a mess, I nearly slipped over on the tiled floor. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, so I've no idea how long it had been that way. They just need to step up their toilet inspections and that would take care of that issue. On the way to the bar you pass the kitchen. Weirdly there was a pile of Yorkshire puddings on the draining board (I'm hoping they were just there ready to throw away and not actually stored there). There were also pans, half full of food and covered in black carbon just laid all around. If I had noticed the state of the kitchen when I walked in, I may not have stayed to eat. Surely when your kitchen is on display you at least make an effort to keep it clean and tidy? This restaurant has potential to be so much better. I'm not saying anything new either, several people have already said many of the points I've raised. Management just need to take note. On a plus point, the staff are lovely. Thank you for looking after us.

Visiting my sister and she suggested this restaurant. Very impressed with the food, portion sizes were more than adequate and good value for money.

Yesterday was the third time I’ve visited after a few bad experiences prior (over salty meat each time) Both meals came missing items. The poke bowl as shown should have had avocado, carrot and nori sheets and also a beef short rib missing tenderstem and chimichurri unfortunately. The venue itself is clean and looks good however the new menus look cheap and tacky with no thought put in them. If it wasn’t for the amazing staff and lovely drinks I wouldn’t have returned the last few times.

Called on a whim for the set Sunday lunch, lovely food which was very good value and with very friendly and efficient service. Marked 4 though as the restaurant and toilets could have been cleaner. We will return and hopefully this was just a one off. Oh and the music choices were excellent, very nice vibe.

The service today was very good but the menu has changed and just isn't as good as it used to be. The food is ok, no more than that and this is a shame because it used to be really good. We have been enjoying lunch here for years but will probably be going elsewhere from now on.

Great service for our big party (10 people) Food was very nice. The seared tuna was incredibly tender. The Calamari was nicely spiced with a nice lemon vinaigrette. Good selection of desserts.

7 of us eat before going to theatre! Firstly the service was good by the 2 waiters very friendly and speedy! But the food left a lot to be desired! Personally the menu is confusing and don’t think the owners know what they are trying to achieve! To start I had the Mongolian lamb! My question would be what was Mongolian about them! 2 tasteless small lamb chops for £11 no spice, seasoning etc… for my main a chicken biriyani - possibly the most bizarre dish I’ve eaten. Very little chicken and tasted sour! Looking round the table at the end lots of food still left on plates! Unheard of! Comments from others! The tikka masala wasn’t good, curry’s were watery! Best meal was my daughter chicken strips chops and peas. Unfortunately won’t be going back! Walked past the restaurant on way bk to my car at 945 pm and lights were off. Was it a one off? Reading other reviews probs not! Never really wright things on here but this was not good!

The starters were poor. We had mac n cheese balls which were bland and needed seasoning. Lamb kebabs which seemed and tasted like it was bought from a supermarket, its was also burnt. We also had bao buns and although they looked good, the taste was lacking. The katsu sauce was quite flavourless and again the chicken tasted like it was from a supermarket. The main meals were much better and the portions sizes were very good but overall very average and I wouldn’t recommend or go there again if I had a choice

Arrived to the restaurant without a reservation which was no problem for the staff for that time of day. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed and all the staff seemed really friendly and happy to be there. We were greeted by a friendly and smiley girl named Chelsey who primarily looked after us during our visit. Prompt drinks and food order which was great and also giving a great drink recommendation by Chelsey which my friend really enjoyed. Our food arrived no longer than expected for the tomahawk steak which was nothing less than absolutely delicious. The portion size was great to the point even 2 people could not quite finish it off and the taste was even better. This i s now my third visit to this restaurant and the third menu we have ordered from, all had great choices so we will definitely be back again.

Very disappointed with the food. Been going here for years and tonight the food was very sub standard. Must say waitresses were great though. Had the Chilli beef. Meat was tough and not what we are used to. Asked where the burnt ends were what were always on the menu and was told it's owned by Muslims so no pork allowed. I thought they would cater for visitors not just their own preferences. Toilets not great. Broken seat and no hand towels in the baskets. Bring back the previous owners please.

First time coming here with friends from work and it didn’t disappoint. Meal was tasty, the atmosphere was lovely and the staff were attentive. Big shout out to George who was only 16 but so knowledgeable about the food, gave us his recommendations and was always there if we needed anything. A very polite and funny young man. Thank you

Do not come on a Thursday - we had to reorder or drinks 3 times as they didn’t have them in or had sold out. One of the servers kept forgetting my boyfriend’s drink order and I had mine before he did. We had to wait 20 minutes to even order a dessert and watched the server go to all the other tables before us. People who came in after us were served and had their drinks/starters etc overall seemed very slow.

Fairly average. Not the cheapest place and portion sizes are a bit tight. One small roast potato on a Sunday lunch. Been here a few times in the past, wouldn’t bother returning.

Brilliant service, food, and cocktails at brunch. Ellie and Elle were funny, kind and took really good care of us. Would highly recommend.

This place has changed recently, menu and atmosphere. Went recently for Friday evening food and drinks, the place is nice but it’s too bright and the music is really too cheesy and loud. The pale ale has been replaced by their own ‘Ro-beer’ which isn’t nice at all (just my opinion) menus are laminated paper too like the ones you seen in a market place cafe. Foods decent enough and reasonably priced which is nice but the recent changes do not improve the experience. I don’t think I will be returning soon.

My friends and I recently visited as part of an annual birthday gathering and we were unfortunately disappointed. The service was absolutely fine we had no issues there but the restaurant has changed it’s menu so we were surprised when we were handed the new one which was now quite a juvenile design. The website still hasn’t be updated (checked again before this review) as we checked this before visiting. There seems to be now far too many cuisines to choose from offering sushi, burgers and Indian to name just a few. The restaurant was a third full which last time we visited it was at max capacity and the music varied from pop music to dance anthems. Very different to the atmosphere, music and food the restaurant used to offer. The food was ok, but we didn’t feel it was worth the price tag. We hope that the restaurant does consider revisiting the old menu or select one cuisine to focus on before we would consider returning.

Good service. Great ambience. Good value. Nicely presented and cooked food. I ordered the Korean dish Bimbimbap. It was a hearty portion with big cubes of tofu on the side served with soy sauce, but there was something missing from the flavour, so I asked for some spicy Asian sauce and was given sriracha which helped. It was only after I left the restaurant that I realised it was advertised as being served with kimchi. I didn't get the kimchi and the dish was a lacklustre without it.

Great night out at robatary, we went for a family meal and the staff were very friendly and helpful, the service and food was excellent quality, very clean 👌

This place has gone downhill a lot recently. Always had lovely meals here, but the most recent visit was disappointing. The ramen broth was average, had absolutely no depth of flavour, no spice at all. And why on earth were vermacelli noodles used in the ramen? They have no place in ramen. The Bibimbap was quite nice though. Service once we got our meals was extremely slow. It's a shame, the decor is really nice. We will not be back.

Very disappointing, was recommended to it. Went for tea ordered chicken satay skewers with peanut sauce £9 and my friend had belly pork skewers £8.50 we added home made chips £4, the chicken skewers were tiny, burnt taste and the sauce did not taste of anything, belly pork bigger and marginally nicer, chips were fine. The portion size are way over priced, looked like a starter but not starter prices you would expect to pay. Medium wine also at £8 is over priced compared to other places in Wakefield, gave it 2 as staff were pleasant and friendly and comfortable place to eat but totally disappointed with food, sorry but won’t be returning.

Thought we would give this a try… for a Monday looked quite lively. Ordered a couple of drinks to start whilst we browsed the menu. A young lady then came and took our order. More people came in eventually they gave their order, some even got served? After 35mins the young lady came back to apologise… ‘Sorry we’ve lost your order, can you remember what it was?’… no thank you, we’ll have the bill🤬

Having booked a table for my wife and I at Robatory after looking at the 4.4star rating I was looking forward to our meal together. Unfortunately the food was nothing short of poor leaving us refusing the food. For one of the starters we had burned chicken satays. Giving them the benefit of the doubt it was eaten. When the mains came however it was much of the same. More burned chicken, burned bottom of the pan rice, bland sauces. The mains were rejected and offers of new food cooked refused. The general staff service was OK, they offered to remove the starters from the bill leaving just the drinks to pay. I also had to go to the bar to get staff to raise my issues as the 3 floor staff were busy talking among themselves

Visited today with three friends for lunch. No silly expensive rip off prices. We sat outside in the sunshine but the interior is lovely. We took advantage of alfresco dining. Outstanding food, big portions and really tasty. Lovely friendly staff, I'll 100% be back, what a great little place

Sorry guys to be so negative but I feel I must be honest so you can improve for future costumers . Four of us visited last night . The general opinion was our experience was very poor . Food was small portions . Food was average and over priced . We ordered drinks then food all seemed well . 5 mins later waitress returned to imformus our main dish had the rack of ribs missing . We were asked to pick another item off the menu . We was not offered any substitute for our main dish . After some negotiation we were offered pork balls as a substitute. When the meal arrived we were informed only half was ready so the girls had eaten their meal before our main dish came . The pork balls were burnt. When had virtually finished our already spoiled dish when realised an item was missing. That was served once again saying the cook had forgotten to add it to our meal . The only positive was the waitresses who served us we very cheer full and offered any help they could they .tried there best to ease our disappointment .

We had a nice meal but not quite as good as our first visit in 2023. The new menu seemed smaller and the 3 small plate offer is no more making it a little expensive. Service was good and the food tasty so still worth a visit

We were served by Ben, who matched our humor straight away with good classic wakey charm. Food was beautiful and one of the best cheesecakes I have tasted.

Lovely place, food was delicious, chao Sui lollipops are a must, ribs and Korean chicken were delicious, literally meat falling apart levels of satisfaction. Ben the server was brilliant, cracking service and delicious cocktails. Will definitely be back

Another Excellent visit to this wonderful Restaurant. A new menu which was even better than the previous one. New Manager and Chef have taken the standard even higher. As always the staff were excellent.

3 of us ate and drank Friday May 24th. It was great! Food was lovely, cocktails top notch and the staff were fantastic. No pushing or constantly checking but always ready to help. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Went with my wife around teatime. My wife had duck which was a good taste but tough. I had a small portion that was meant to be brisket but it was not. It was dry, tasteless beef that I left. Behind us were 3 or 4 guys that were swearing and loud. One of them started shouting and banging on the plate glass window when he saw, I assume, someone he knew, who came in. The guy banging on the window was dressed like he was at the beach with tiny shorts on and heavily tattooed legs. The girls who served us were fine, but after the food we just wanted to finish our drinks and go. 3 times in 5 minutes a waiter asked us if we wanted more 'alcohol', we told him no every time. I would not go back if I was offered money to do so and I would suggest to anyone thinking of going there to avoid.

Amazing food, I wouldn't even say on the pricey side. It's refreshing to go to a restaurant and pay that little bit more and that cost be mirrored in the quality of the food! Probably had some of best garlic bread I've ever had with the Mac n cheese! Service is brilliant here, staff are polite and conscientious. Had to give 1 less star, as there is no baby change/ baby change in the gents toilets and I had to change my son on the floor in a cubicle.

First time, loved it, lovely food.

This used to be my favourite restaurant in Wakefield but unfortunately it’s gone massively downhill, not sure if they have a new chef or what has changed. Visited around a month ago and got the crispy chilli beef, the rice which came with it was awful it was mushy and wet and just tasted of butter. The salt and pepper fries were completely different to the ones we had the previous time and were not good at all. Decided to try it again on the bank holiday for lunch and ordered a crispy chilli beef sandwich but was given chicken. After waiting almost 20 minutes for the correct one to come what arrived was untoasted sourdough which due to the wet filling disintegrated. The crispy chilli beef was drowning in sweet chilli sauce so it had become mushy and didn’t taste of anything else. Really disappointed and won’t be returning here again despite receiving another 15% off voucher. Maybe this is their attempt to get people to return when the food is now subpar?

Ordered the land and sea sharing platter for 3 people at £30 per person and the platter consisted of 1 steak, 4 ribs, a small lobster tail, 2 octopus tentacles and 2 sides. Not anything like enough food for 3 people and £30 a head. Queried if it was correct with the waiter who didn’t seem shocked and just said they will knock £30 off with no apology and never asked if everything was ok during or after the meal. Seems like they just gave us the amount of food for 2 people and tried to blag it. Waiter had an attitude problem. We then ordered desserts as we had a £100 voucher to spend and they had agreed to knock off £30. The waiter with the attitude then decides to be passive aggressive and gives us ridiculous soup and cocktail spoons for our brownie desserts. Won’t be coming again after this which is a shame as we liked it here and the food is good. Still hungry.

The food was dreadful. The chunky chips were black. due to being flash fried, black on the outside and raw in the inside.

First time visit and can highly recommend! My starter of duck pancakes with hoisin sauce was delicious and plentiful (had to share with hubby!) our main courses of red snapper and curried belly pork were beautifully presented, hot on arrival and very tasty. Will definitely be returning in the future.

Went in on the off chance after spending day in Wakefield. Luckily didn't have to book in advance and a table was available. Me and my partner went for the two courses for a set price and they had a children menu available too for my son. The food came out hot and freshly done without having a long wait for it. The amount of food on the plate was more than enough. We was celebrating our anniversary to which I asked when we had dessert if they could do anything special on my partners plate, to which at my surprise they brought a plate with hand written Happy Anniversary in white chocolate and edible flowers. 5 out of 5 for the food, 5 out of 5 for service and 5 out of 5 for them all going beyond the extras to make it special for myself and partner with our son also loving the experience. Had the set menu for Mother’s Day and the food was brilliant, never had a bad meal here and the service was fantastic as always. Every dish was delicious!

Robatary has always been a great spot for me and my friends. Unfortunately, the dish I always have had fallen short. The Crispy Chili Chicken with rice was just too salty for me to eat. The other food my friends had was still nice though. Don't get me wrong, the restaurant was till great, a good selection of drinks too. The place was clean and tidy. I will be back, but I hope the food is less salty!

Visited here a few times…had some great meals and some not so good (was once served undercooked chicken…I’m talking raw in the middle) but always like to give places benefit of the doubt. Went on a Saturday a night and was good to see it busy, there’s always something reassuring about a busy restaurant. Our drinks order was taken swiftly and food order not long after, good start. Thats where the good things end. We waited nearly an hour for food that was inedible when it was served. The duo of duck! Nothing good to say. Could barely cut through the breast…it didn’t taste good at all. Seemed like it had been quickly defrosted in a microwave and thrown on a grill! The sauce was…unusual. My partner had the Katsu chicken. Chicken was seconds from full cremation and not even sure where the Katsu was! So was basically burnt chicken and stick rice! Staff were working hard, but didn’t once check in on how our meal was, it was only when we asked for the bill and they saw we still had pretty much full plates did they ask if everything was ok. Restored some faith by not charging us for the meal!! One too many questionable meals here so won’t be visiting again.

i attended there on the 29th of jan for a staff do and there was one waiter there which really stood out, he was checking up on our table, joking around with us, and even doing some table side theatre which made our experience there 10x better, i believe this guys name is fatiha, he claimed it was his first day but he looked to good for it to be his first day, overall the food was alright, the duck which i ordered was a tiny bit chewy and my wok loaded chips were cold which was a tad annoying.

Absolutely amazing experience as always....Reece is exceptional at his job and one of the reasons we return.....the food is amazing especially the tapas...an overall amazing restaurant ❤️❤️❤️

Second time visiting and as good as I remembered, my cousin who I I introduced it to loved it so much she went back a few days later to find there was a midweek offer on too. Food is gorgeous with loads of great options. A lovely place with nice decor and friendly staff.

Real mixed bag. We had 4 starters and the Sunday dinners (Chicken and beef). First the bad, the chicken thogh meatballs were shocking. No flavour, tasted sour, really bad. Tempura prawns were OK, but 4 prawns for £10 is really poor value. The seaweed that came with the prawns was chewy and not Crispy. Burnt ends and Sriricha ribs were good. Sunday dinner was really good.

Walked past and dropped in for a quick lunch and stuck around as we were so pleasantly surprised. A lovely menu with beautiful decor. The waitress that served us could have been a little happier but as a waitress I get it, but maybe loose the chewing gum. Will be returning :)

Fabulous atmosphere ,staff were amazing coudnt do enough for us .We had a lovely time my son and family from Blackpool and then the rest of us .The menu is different and beautifully served .And amazingly material serviettes not bits of tissue that disintegrates as soon as you touch them . Everyone thought the food delicious and it really was ..I will be going again .My son says that’s the only place he wants to go for a meal when he visits next time .Well done to the staff and chefs very impressed .

We have visited Robatary on many occasions and it’s never provided us with anything other than a great experience. The staff are really friendly and are always on hand to assist you. The menu offers a wide range of both small plates as well as larger main meals. On our most recent visit, we ordered; (small plates) duck pancakes, duck fried gyozas, (large plates) katsu chicken curry and crispy chilli beef. The duck pancakes came with a hoisin dipping sauce and were really flavoursome. With the gyozas, you actually get a choice of whether you want them deep fried or steamed and a choice of two different dipping sauces as well. We opted for deep fried with the miso sauce- I would highly recommend. The main dishes were also really tasty and well presented, the portions are huge as well! The only slight complaint I have is that the egg fried rice that the crispy chilli beef comes with, was a little too goopy on this visit, another minute or so and it would’ve been perfect. Other than that though, I really can’t complain and on top of that, they also have 25% off the whole menu between 5PM-7PM as part of their early bird special! This restaurant is well worth a visit, we will definitely be returning again soon.

Visited a few times over the last couple of years and has always been great. This visit really wasn’t great. Starters, bland and flavourless. When the waiter collected our plates he asked how we found the starters so we replied ‘ok, quite bland’ and he replied ‘that’s brilliant’… clearly in robot mode not listening! Then the mains were marginally better, but still bland and lacking for the price. The chicken katsu was no better than something I could have ordered from a Wetherspoons. No opportunity to provide feedback as no one asked us. We left feeling really disappointed, especially for the price… I really don’t think we will waste our time coming here again which is a shame as it has a lot of potential!

Food lovely, service very slow Pretty poor when you get given a dessert spoon between 2 people to stir espresso coffees, which were Luke warm , so ordered 2 more coffees and got ,wait for it …. 2 straws each to stir coffees!!! One waitress got an attitude by trying to give us the dessert spoon we had to stir coffee with as a dessert spoon , got a bit of a huff on when we asked for 2 spoons to eat our desserts with .

Food took 1hour to arrive, burger was so dry I wouldn’t have fed it to my dog, nobody ever asked if the food was okay so had no opportunity to say it’s bad. We sat for 30min waiting for the bill only to go up and find all the waiters standing at the bar. When they cleared the table and my full plate of food they still didn’t ask if it was okay

After 5 years I risked going back.. The only good thing was the nice server. The food is still average but sky high prices for what you get quality and quantity wise Overpriced

Service was prompt if a little unprofessional- a lot of noise coming from kitchen area which was between waiters and kitchen staff having some kind of joke . I ordered burnt bits pork belly which was fine. I also ordered noodles which were incredibly salty and chicken wings in soy The chicken was terrible- tough - dry and inedible I told the waiter and a slight discount was offered. A very mediocre, forgettable experience.

We came here for our Christmas do on the back of previous good service and food. Firstly let me say the food was nice ( when it finally arrived!). Our problem was with the service. In the past service in this restaurant has been excellent but I’m not sure there’s been a change in staff but last nights service was so slow . Over an hour between started and mains ( with an excuse that it was the grilled chicken which too so long!). Also we found staff were either surly and unsmiling or way over the top. It’s a shame because for some reason standards have slipped in what used to be one of the nicest restaurants.

First of all the place was freezing the toilet was full of water one of staff said they had a leak then why wasn’t it mended really shoddy toilets. The wait time was over a 1 hour when there was only 2 other people in some more came in and they served their food before ours. They had run out of everything it wasn’t very good when they had no ice cream for kids so had to go somewhere else for it. What really let it down was they said they didn’t have any coffee and couldn’t make any espresso Martinis think they just couldn’t be bothered. All in all our total bill was £500 so we would like some refund we went on Sunday 3rd of December at 5 pm and there was 12 of us with 3 kids.

Iona was fantastic at her job and think she deserves a pay rise excellent service.

Excellent restaurant with relaxing decor and great atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food is spot on! Sunday lunch is a must. The steak night is great value, and the menu is varied with good quality meals!

Went for our Christmas team night out, food was excellent, staff gave exceptional service, was a lovely experience, will definitely recommend and will be returning.

Great asian-fusion meal here. Nice varied menu and great staff. If you like an 'old fashioned', they do a nice one here.

Went for Sunday lunch and ended up having scallops for starter the Goza dumplings and beef tatiki was absolutely gorgeous loved every mouthful My husband had the steak and lobsters and was equally impressed Will definitely be returning

This place came as a recommendation and unfortunately I was left incredibly disappointed with the food. My starter was scallop sashimi, it was tasty but the portion size was tiny! It looked like one scallop and it cost me £12.50 which is overpriced for what was served. My main didn’t get any better, I ordered ramen with prawns for £17 and it was the blandest saltiest ramen I’ve ever eaten! There was absolutely no depth of flavour and it was almost like they’d thrown in some ready prepared stir fry mix, I’ve never had red peppers and red onion in a ramen…I decided not to have dessert as I assumed it would be as disappointing as the rest of it. I can only assume by some of the recommendations I’ve seen and even my friends that maybe before they have served better food but for our visit it was awful and I’ve been left very disappointed and cheated from the money I’ve had to part with for such terrible food!

Firstly, a huge thanks to Hadyn for excellent service- friendly and professional, dealing with all our extra needs ( my SIL has allergies and he was incredibly well-informed). The food is good, but...We have been coming to Robatary for years now and the portion sizes are ever-decreasing; the Tataki beef is half the size it was 8 months ago and the Gyoza serving is only 4. The Tempura prawns are no longer true Tempura and at 9 pounds were a little disappointing. The burger was great as were the chips! The portions either need increasing or the prices slightly lowering. Thanks to the service though we did have an excellent afternoon.

Vegetarian starter and main course nice, lots of flavour and sauce. Starter of crab and main course of tuna terrible, dry and not flavour. Drink OK, few cocktails and beers. Discount offered to bill which was accepted but still doesn't change the quality of food. The service was decent.

Lovely food and ambience, very nicely decorated and great service. We had Bao buns and dumplings to start, both were tasty and plentiful, mains, crispy beef and rice and a sandwich with chips, lovely crispy beef, a little sweet for me but offset by lots of spicy chilli and spring onions, so much I had to take some to eat later! My friend really enjoyed her chicken and bacon sandwich and was disappointed that we had to leave some chips there were so many. We had a bottle of wine at £20 which was very good and free water on the table, the whole bill was under £70 which was great for what we had. One big negative - the ladies toilets, why on earth is the lighting so gloomy?? I saw the men’s was lit up like Christmas but the ladies has such subdued lighting you couldn’t put lipstick on or potentially look for sanitary products, let alone see to use them! I also pity anyone with any kind of disability (sight in particular) it was so dim you could do with a torch! Get it sorted, it’s ridiculous style over substance!

Made order through their own website. Order got cancelled by the restaurant (I had to call them to find out, no contact from their end.). Was assured it wouldn't be charged / undone within 10 days. It was not. Called them, would have it sorted by 'monday because saturdays are busy'. Nothing. No responses, no solutions, no contact. Had to do a chargeback through bank. Avoid. It's a shame, the food is actually decent quality.

well priced, amazing tasty food. cocktails are easily the best we’ve had in wakefield, so many unique flavours and options!!
