River Kwai in Reigate and Banstead

Just had an appalling delivery from River Kwai! Sweetcorn fritters which appeared to be microwaved! As they were soggy and lucky if I found one sweetcorn in them! The pad Thai which is a popular dish, equally not fresh and was bland! A slither of spring onion couple of strands of bean sprouts and very little else! Flavourless! This has to date been the worst Thai I’ve ever had! Will avoid you from here on in for this reason! Where is your quality control! That order was not fit for anyone!

Really nice chicken pad thai! We also had the sizzling beef and duck which were really good quality. Prices are very reasonable- would recommend coming here :)

My score system. 3=good 4=great 5=special. It's nice Thai food, nothing special. Went as a large group of 7, only 4 other diners. Starters took 20 minutes to come, then a further 30 minute wait for mains.

We ordered take-away, the portion is big, price is cheaper than most Thai restaurants around Redhill/Reigate area. But the food is very sad for me.

This is a regular of ours. We always call ahead to book as it can get busy and they don’t have many tables. Food is always fantastic and very tasty. Service is always great! Nothing more to say, it’s brilliant

Best Thai restaurant around Redhill/Reigate. Highly recommend the Beef krapow, Som tam and the Yam Nua, both of which are authentically prepared and absolutely delicious. I ate here twice recently having not visited the restaurant in a few years and was pleased to see that the place hadn’t lost its charm. It’s very reasonably priced too, fantastic value for money in these times.

I was amazed by the food today. Didn’t expect much but i was surprised that the food was so tasty. All the dishes were very flavourful and i kept telling the waitress that the food is so amazing, definitely coming back.

Fried rice was fantastic, green curry very nice , pad see lew was rather unidimentional, perhaps a sweet soy sauce slightly caramelized in it. Fish cake starter was great. Overall a nice meal with quick service.

Ordered a set meal for 2 which was extended to 3. Everything arrived promptly, was nicely presented and tasted delicious. Good service and nice family run atmosphere which sets it apart from standard chains elsewhere in Reigate.

9 of us had dinner here. The food was excellent. It all came at the same time-such a wide variety to choose from. We have been here before.Good prices- we would definitely go back again.

Casual Thai restaurant in the high street. Prawn crackers were amazing. All the food was so tasty, we had sharing starters, a selection of curries, pad Thai, rice etc, all was very good. It’s not fancy, but really nice food with very good service.

Food are good, like home-cooked meals. Not tasty for every dishes but portion is big. Curry is the best, papayas salad is just average. A bit disappointed is that there is no cocktail. Service is excellent. The restaurant is good if you want nice food but not hang out with friend to enjoy the environment.

Real authentic food and prepared and served with thought and care. Waitress is absolutely adorable and very helpful, making the experience 100% better. Food is cooked from fresh and a real Thai taste so you do wait a little longer but who goes out to rush their food and want it on the table within 10 minutes? Always excellent and continues to be. I decided to finally write a review for the River Kwai having had genuinely excellent takeaway food several times in the last year. There's some solid competition in the area too, and the River Kwai is now our 'go to' for all things Thai. Bold flavours, very generous portion sizes, speedy service and excellent VFM. Particular favourites include most starters, massaman curries, prawns in garlic pepper sauce, pad Thai and lemon chicken. 100% recommended.

The food was amazing! We ordered menu for 2 and we couldn’t finish all. Everything was so tasty! Service was great, we even learned a little bit Thai 😻 Super cozy and delicious 😻

Good attentive service, red and green curries were tasty but I have had better. Spring rolls as a starter were very good, fish cakes were a little soggy. Would go back again.

Deliveroo took precedence over our service and deliveries made every few mins made us feel 2nd best.

A small and compact restaurant and one recommended to us by our niece who uses it regularly: a thoroughly enjoyable evening and meal and everyone in our family group had a lovely time. Especially recommend the sharing starter dishes and red curry dish. Our first time here, but definitely not our last.

One of my many visits to the River Kwai over the years The food here is superb, beautifully flavoured and just an absolute pleasure to consume The staff are lovely and friendly, especially the main host… such a lovely lady! The atmosphere feels so authentic with Thai style decor and even very soft oriental music playing in the background. The restaurant is small but this just adds to it’s charm and helps it maintain its intimate setting Went with a friend who has not been before and he said he will definitely be returning too! Wish I’d taken more photos but when the plates landed, all I could think about was eating! 5 stars / 10 out of 10 / 2 thumbs up… whatever top praise I can give!!

We hadn't booked a table in advance and took a gamble that they would have space. I've eaten here once before, so I hoped the food would be as good as before. The food was incredible, presented beautifully and just so very tasty. We ordered a set menu and the amount of food for 2 people was amazing and we ended up taking some of it home. Really cannot rate this place highly enough. Can't wait to visit again soon!

Great take away— we had the Set Menu for 2 which was a great variety and a LOT of food! It was delivery quickly and still warm when it arrived. Will definitely order again!

Had a Deliveroo takeaway from here at the weekend- cannot believe I’ve lived in Reigate five years and never eaten here! Food was excellent- we had fish cakes and satay to start , followed by red curry and massaman- all delicious and spicy, but flavourful over hot. The delivery was ready really quickly too.Will definitely be eating here again, really impressed.

Driving through Reigate and spotted this restaurant. Really lovely customer service and the best Thai food i have had in Sussex to date. The set menu 3 for 2, was such a great mix and would prob feed 3.

The food was actually quite tasty but I can’t justify leaving a 5 rating due to the strange behaviour of some of the staff and service in general. We had pre-booked a table and once sat down the slow service was painful. The drinks took about 15 minutes, the food took forever and came out at different times despite the we asked for it all at once. When I went to pay the bill the staff member asked if I’d be paying her tip in cash or by card. I had planned to, and did, give a tip prior to this. I just found it very rude and assuming that she thought there was a tip coming. If you feel that strongly about a tip then add a service charge rather than putting people on the spot. One final observation. The younger waitress was coming over and asking very politely if everything was ok. When we asked to order the food, more drinks or get the bill - she couldn’t assist us as it seemed only the senior waitress is allowed to deal with these kind of basic requests. Nice food but takes a long time.

We decided to book River Kwai for my husbands birthday. Over the years we have eaten here many times. Since the beginning of Covid we have not eaten out until now. We were not disappointed. The food was beautifully cooked and couldn't have been better. Thankyou for a great evening. Always love the jasmine tea.

Really hit and miss. I’ve eaten in the restaurant before and had great food. The last takeaway, however, caused me to spend the next day in the bathroom. First time I’ve ever had food poisoning, and won’t be eating here again!

Food was first class! Just as a birthday meal and supporting local business it turned out to be one of my best Thai experiences so far. Everything cooked to perfection, even for someone who is not big on rice these dishes were inspirational and delicious. Great atmosphere and friendly customer service. A definite recommendation from me and I'll be sure to return. My only regret is I didn't have more cash to leave a larger tip!

Ordered delivery: prawn toast was ok as was squid starter - a bit oily but soft and tasty. Pad Yang (Duck, sprouts and soy sauce) would have been nice but was steeped in an overly sweet sauce. And that is where the problem started. Both Pud Thai (noodles and prawns) and Kao Mapro (coconut rice) were overly sweet. So everything was so sweet that only my partner reasonably ate the meal. My kid and I could not. A shame because the prawns were freshish and juicy (

Very nice atmosphere, quite busy at night so reservations are recommended. The 4/5 stars are due to us not liking the squid and the rolls, however the set menu for 3/4 people was very good. Would go back!

We have generally enjoyed eating at the restaurant and take aways until tonight. It was my partner’s special birthday and we were looking forward to our take away, however it suspiciously arrived within around 15 mins of ordering and tasted as though it had been frozen and then microwaved rather than cooked from fresh. The Pad Thai had an awful smell to it that meant my partner couldn’t even eat it. Not sure what was going on but we were disappointed and won’t be going back.

The food was absolutly lovely, however this is the second time we have been ripped off here. As a Compare the Market customer, we get 2 for 1 on starters, mains and deserts. I phoned prior to check this, and mentioned as we ordered, checking which items were available under the offer. As the bill came, it seemed over priced but the lady insisted I had just forgot about our two colas. She did not let me look at the receipt fully, and took it away after. We ended up paying roughly £10 over what we should have done. This is the second time this has happened, the first time I thought was a mistake, or I had caculated wrongly, now I know she just rips people off. I will never be going there again. Let me repeat, the food was really nice, some of the best I have tried. It was just a let down regarding the service.

Nice atmosphere and delightful staff but a little slow on the cooking front. Portions are generous on every dish. However squid and chicken wing starters were not fresh tasting. Sticky rice was an impenetrable block and sent back. Second try rice was only slightly better. Curry, pud Thai and duck were fresh and tasty. Will probably go back and try other dishes to decide which half of the menu is great and which half to avoid.

Not sure what the problem was, but we treated with JUST enough respect to keep us sitting in the restaurant, although it was close. Been here a few times and the food has been ok and this evening the food was served quickly, however won't be returning due to this episode as there are other, more welcoming ,Thai restaurants in Reigate!

6 of us met up for our annual gathering here and enjoyed the set menu, which has changed a little since our last visit. We added a couple of additional dishes added for good measure, not because the set menus were lacking - more out of intrigue. Ample delicious food, good service and a pleasant atmosphere in a relatively small restaurant.

Walked past this restaurant many times and eat in there over 10 years - with Deliveroo we thought give a chance - crackers ok as good as others - dim sum really good - jungle curry soooo bad frozen prawns - sauce is water - I understand it can be a broth but really really bad - very basic - I will carry on walking past

Get rid of the new lady manager before your customers disappear! Having eaten here for the past 6 years being served by a very friendly Philippine lady we were shocked to see the owner has employed possible the worst manager I have ever experienced. To sum up how rude she was, we just walked out and I have only ever done that a handful of times in a restaurant. It’s a real shame as the food is nearly always very good and they clearly have a good chef, but customer service like we experienced is unforgivable. After no acknowledgment on arrival, we found our own table. The new manager just pointed but did not smile or welcome us to the restaurant. She seemed immediately unhappy she had another customer to serve (clearly had more important things to do) and we did not feel at all welcome. To tell the truth we are normally quite boring when it comes to ordering at this restaurant and always have the same thing. The mixed starter is a favourite and as neither of us like the dim sum we always swap it for extra fishcakes or ribs (as we have done for the last 6 years). On this occasion however the new manager refused to let us swap raising her voice in broken English saying…. "No!" "You on taste card so no swapping", "I the new manager now and you need to pay double if want to swap" “Understand”. We of course explained that we had always had the same dish for the last 6 years etc etc. but she still refused to swap the dim sum, seeming slightly resentful that we were using the taste card for a final discount on our bill. Being in a amicable mood I decided to not argue with her and move on to order a starter of prawns which was unfortunately met with: "You need to pay £2 extra for prawn" "No more cheap taste card, you need pay extra for prawn and all seafood, squid, mussel everything" . Now nowhere on the menu does it say all seafood is extra and again in the last 6 years we have never been charged extra for seafood, so we asked her if it was a new policy. To that she replied: "It’s not me, it’s the chef, you need to pay extra" “You got problem I go get the owner but you need to pay" . We of course encouraged her to go and find the manager as her rude and unfriendly service was now becoming an issue. She quickly returned from the kitchen saying “Manager not here so either pay extra or have no prawn." Now we would have paid the extra and it’s not even about the money. My issue was with the stinking horrible sour faced woman that served us. We just went out for a quiet meal thinking we were supporting our local restaurant, yet the miserable new manager had ruined the evening before we had even ordered! For that reason we got our belongings and left telling her she was the reason we will not be returning, not the food. I must say she looked a bit surprised as we walked out and she realised she had taken her bad attitude a bit to far. I don’t know the owner of River kwai, but I’m sure at some point he will read this. My message to you is get rid of that women, she is poison for your business! We would love to see Philippine lady who was always smiling and happy return and apologies for the 1 star review, it just needed to be said…..

Fantastic fresh tasty food. With new Thai food restaurants popping up in Reigate the market is now crowded. This restaurant has survived for many years by simply providing high quality food every time. We will be going back.

The food was fantastic! Very tasty, very good quality and portion sizes were impressive. We ordered Dim sum to start, and a Thai Red Curry and the no.33 dishes for main, along with plain and egg fried rice. We would thoroughly recommend every dish.On top of this, the atmosphere and music was pleasant, and the service was top notch.We are not from Reigate, however next time we are nearby we will definitely return!

Having three Thai restaurants in Reigate seems a bit excessive but this one, unlike the others, has been around for a long time. It is quite small and so it is not a bad idea to get there early, but the food is very good and the service is very pleasent.

What an awful experience I have just had here. Staff were not welcoming at old. Had booked a table for 3. 3rd person delayed in traffic, due to a having had a hospital appt. We arrived said 3rd person delayed were ordered regardless 3 starters and our main meal. These took ages to come. Starters finished two OLD men sitting and talking were the only other people in the place. Only find that one was the manager/owner. Still waiting for the main and was then asked about 3rd person as they need the table.. no one else had come into the place! Said we are still expecting the 3rd, heard one old man manager/owner made a comment to the old Thai waitress about is it two or three of them. She came and asked again because they need the table. No one had come into the place just the two of us 2hrs after it had opened. We said take the extra table we don't need it! You need it more although no one is here. Felt rushed and unwelcome. Decided to pay for starters and leave as the main had still not arrived!! The kitchen wasn't even busy! On leaving 3 people arrived and sat at a table for 4!!!! Doesn't make sense. Only go there if u want a Thai meal in an unwelcoming place with rude staff!!

Very rude Thai lady..who were being manipulated by two old men. So we booked a table for 3 but unfortunately 1 fell out at the last minute, so this lady came straight to our face asking rudely about the other person who couldn't come even though we ordered like we were 3 anyway. I thought this was uncall for and not professional. I would think twice about going there if anyone is thinking of a good service.

My wife and I decided to order a Deliveroo and chose River Kwai for a late dinner in after a hard day of work. We order Tom Kha prawns which was delicious (and the only reason I am not giving 1 star). Also ordered chicken Gaeng Ped and Pla Pao seabass. Both these two dishes were SO SPICY HOT that I have been sick. I am talking “vindaloo” hot. Never in my life I had something so spicy! The description of chicken on Deliveroo does not mention any spice and “our special spicy sauce” does not carry a warning like “please have a fire extinguisher ready by your side”... Needless to say I called the restaurant and, after talking to a lady who put me on hold three times before passing me to the Manager, I could finally try to explain my disappointment about the food. After a few times telling the fella that the food was out of any normal “spicy” expectation I could not move him from his position: the food is like this and not spicy at all. I even offered to bring it down and have him to eat it in front of me.Now, it is not because of the food I will never set foot on this establishment, nor because of how much chilli pepper they enjoy putting in their dishes. I will never go back or order from them as I cannot tolerate bad customer service and to be treated like a liar. I did not care about freebies or certainly did not want to eat anything any more. I was truly ill and my dinner ruined, just needed a bit of empathy. So beware: rude and unprofessional behaviour may be what you get when you are trying to flag an issue. Very, very disappointing!

Absolutely amazing meal last night. Walked in at 9pm with no reservation. They fitted us in without too much of a wait. The food was sensational. The best Thai food I've ever had. Highly recommend!! Will definitely return even though we're not local

Food was outstanding, so fresh and the chillies were fabulous! Loved every dish - my new favourite in Reigate. Amazing service also.

I've been coming to The River Kwai for years. It's comfortable and the girls who serve are lovely. The food is excellent and always fresh and yes it can get a little busy, so sometimes there may be a slight wait in between courses but it's never long. I've tried other Thai restaurants but this always comes out tops and the portions are generous.
