River Fortune in South Lakeland

Order never came; given an hour wait (which is horrific anyways as most have only 20 minutes) and it never arrived so.

Placed an order around 6:30pm we had rung up twice in 2 hours to learn that the food isn’t even cooked yet and hasn’t even been sent off.

took two and a half hours from order to delivery. food was awful. probably the worst chinese takeaway ever. most went in bin..

Before this place changed hands it was our go to restaurant however this time it was awful the food was cold and dry not taste. For the cost it was very disappointing. I can definitely say stay away from the place and visit the other ones in town

We have just had a takeaway from No 1 Chinese Takeaway since it changed hands and can only say it was really good. Can’t understand the 1 star reviews at all. We always enjoyed it when it was River Fortune but now it’s just as good, if not better. Portions were huge and everything was hot and tasty. We got a small bag of free prawn crackers as well. Staff are friendly and polite. Also, don’t understand the comments about wrong orders, as they always repeat it back to you, for you to confirm it’s correct. Ignore all the negative reviews on here and get yourself there, if you enjoy a Chinese takeaway, you won’t be disappointed.

Very expensive for soggy everything, the salt and pepper chips are the worst , so you can imagine the rest £30 in the bin

Really enjoy this Chinese. We often have it delivered and it always still piping hot when it arrives. The food is always delicious. Would definitely recommend

Tried this takeaway after many years since my last visit. I've never had such tasteless Chinese food & it's not cheap. Unfortunate as it is good for parking & the restaurant used to be very nice. I won't try it again for a long while.

Been going to this place for years, before it changed hands (again), food has always been great, also the last few times when it changed to 'No1', but today I got a chicken in satay sauce noodle box and there was only about a tbsp of sauce for the whole dish and the sauce itself was oily and lacked the usual flavour. Up until now it used to be rich and sweet with a little kick of heat to it. There was none of that today. At least my partner's beef in black bean sauce dish was tasty and the side of chips was still as good as ever. Hope it gets fixed.

I wasn’t impressed at all. My vegetables were raw in my chow mein, everything else had a weird oily aftertaste and chips were also very undercooked. Would not go again.

Disgusting. Chicken curry was gloopy and tasteless, the chicken is the cheapest battery farmed chicken you can buy, and the egg fried rice over dry, clumped together and crispy! We asked for a refund and were given one, but we did then have to go out of our way to return the food but better than literally throwing £17 in the bin, as that’s where the food would have gone.

Arrived to collect food, had to wait an extra 45 mins before it was ready. When we eventually got home with the order, opened everything up to find spare ribs chopped into small pieces which consisted of approx 2 ribs😳. On to the chow mein, this consisted of noodles and meat, no veg whatsoever, these were greasy and tasteless. Avoid this takeaway at all costs.

Last night Husband got a munchy box the only thing not dried out to dust was the spring rolls . The Sauces that go with it is so tiny even though he sized up to a large box . My curry sauce had no flavour but corn flour. My honey crispy chicken came in a light water not honey flavour had to make my own sauce for it. Fortune cookies were soft and the prawn crackers were stale . All in all not great at all second time we've ordered hear and most likely the last .

One of the worse Chinese meals we have had. We ordered: Chicken and sweet corn soup Noodle box with beef and black bean Chicken fried rice Szechwan pork Salt and pepper chips All of it had no taste apart from the salt and pepper chips. The chicken and sweet corn soup was very gloopy and had hardly any chicken. The beef looked like beef but it had a weird texture to it and didn’t taste right. The pork… you get lots of meat in the tub, but the flavour was not great… it was like a red sauce with some chili in it. The chicken fried rice- there were small blacks bits as though stuff had come off a pan. The chicken was extremely soft but on the top soft side that I felt it was not chicken. The staff are very friendly, they gave us some free prawn crackers which were good and fortune cookies. You could pay by card which was a plus, but we won’t be back having spent just under £30, we were disappointed on quality and taste.

Read all the reviews (mostly not good)and thought I'd give them a go myself and give them a chance. Got the meal home and the chicken was absolutely disgusting and completely inedible. The chips weren't much better. Won't be returning.

not sure what all the hype with this spot is about tbh, i got my usual chinese order that i get from other places here in kendal and honestly from here it’s not worth the money they ask for. the rice is kinda dry and tasteless. i ordered shredded chicken and i couldn’t taste the chicken, only the coating. for the price you pay you would expect something a bit better. the only upside to this place is that they deliver, but if you don’t mind collecting then i would just go to the silver mounts in instead :/

Excellent service and tasty food!

Having been told our food was a 15 minute wait, we proceeded to wait almost an hour for our food, while watching people who came to collect their orders after us leave before us. In total it took nearly an hour and a half for our food to be ready. The woman was apologetic and they were busy, but it would be more helpful if they gave more realistic wait times, instead of saying that it would be ready ‘as soon as possible’ The food itself was very average- the shredded chicken contained no chicken and was essentially just fried batter and the dim sum platter was a collection of horrible textures with barely a teaspoon of dipping sauce given

Ordered at 7pm told 8pm and it’s 9:30pm and still no delivery.

The service was abysmal, whe the staff were really polite and friendly the wait was crazy. We ordered over the phone, told it would be 15 and went to collect. After waiting for 30 minutes we asked about our order to be told they're cooking it now... then finally received after another 30 mins. We got the dim sum platter too and was really excited only to be very dossapointed by a very anaemic small selection that was really soggy and tasteless. The rest of the food was average. Nice to get Fortune cookies though.

Ordered food. Prawn toast, dry, cold and hard, spring rolls quite nice. Hot and sour soup smelt and tasted disgusting and we’ve had it many times over the years in other places. Threw it down the toilet. Sweet and sour chicken sauce was awful. Pink, and tasted sweet with no body or any sour at all! My sweet and sour sauce I make is far superior. Rice didn’t look freshly done and didn’t enjoy it. Second worst Chinese I’ve ever had. Would definitely recommend to avoid.

This Chinese has recently been taken over. The food wasn’t bad before and now it is incredible! The quality of ingredients is first rate and the staff are lovely. Had a busy week at work - so been twice already! I recommend the salt and pepper dishes but the king prawn fried rice is lovely too. Any of the noodle dishes are also worth a try.

The staff were perfectly pleasant but I do not like being lied to. It was absolute chaos on Saturday. Despite the chaos, they continued taking new orders, some of which were prepared before other customer's that had been waiting a long time. I ordered online, arrived 10 minutes before it should have been ready (but 45 minuted after ordering). Upon arrival I was told my food was being cooked. 45 minutes later it was nearly cooked. An hour later I asked for my money back, and thankfully recieved it without conflict, but having wasted an hour of my time. This is not acceptable customer service.

Just as good as before with the added benefit of now doing delivery and taking card. Food was lovely.

Stopped in on our way home after a long day, immediately the staff gave our toddlers a fortune cookie each. We ordered and had some great food, the staff were friendly, considerate and the service was pretty quick. 100% will return!

Special curry...all meat inedible....dog ate more of the meal than I did....good portions, but that's no good if the main ingredient is all fat, sinewy and tastes horrible...don't expect prime beef, chicken and pork, but for God's sake, We are paying and expect a certain standard of food, enough to at least enjoy it and return again !!

Best Chinese food in Kendal, great value and friendly staff

Staying at local hotel for one night and ordered some noodles. Very tasty, good portion size, nice and hot. Would visit again.

I live just down the road from here, and this place is now my favourite takeaway in kendal. Orders are fast, food is great,staff are friendly, and large portions of great variety can't fault it. Noodle boxes are the best 👌 highly recommended

Personally, this is my favourite Chinese in Kendal. I don't often get takeaways but when I do, this place is a must for me. chow mein and prawn toast is wonderful. I also recommend their salt and pepper chips. However all their dishes are wonderful.

Have had a noodle box previously from River Fortune which was good, but my most recent meal (soup and a main), was far too salty to the point of being inedible. Sorry!

Where do I begin? Went to collect this order in the allotted time they gave us and sat there for an extra 15 minutes to wait for some food. It wasn’t even warm. Got home to find two of the dishes were wrong. Sweet chilli chicken ended up being sweet chilli prawn and vegetable rolls turned to be duck rolls. These were meant for a vegetarian. Not been back since this as it’s really put me off. Only positive is I got some free prawn crackers. Would recommend Beijing house, or Silver Mountain instead

Had two takeaway meals from here recently and couldn’t recommend highly enough. Ordered a variety of dishes, all were good portions, tasted great and still hot when we got them home. Payment is by cash only, no card payment is accepted.

i dont normally go here. boy why didnt i go to where i normally go new fortune.special chow mein. 7 40 for lots of noodles sauce 2 bits chicken 1 prawn a few mushroom and a piece of broccoli .it was certainly special.

Appalling S&P munchy box. Covered in salt and all just thrown in a pizza box. Was expecting something different like a partitioned box. Over priced and ready in 10 Honestly don’t waste your money, go to the silver mountain up the road Crispy beef was fine.

It's decent, good for the price

Take away only 1970's style. Meat too tough to eat. Shrimp soggy, onions undercooked, sauce glutinous jelly, seaweed over seasoned. If this is how Chinese is cooked, don't bother to reopen the restaurant.

Well where do I start ??? I went to the receptionist & she told me that they don't do sweet n sour pork so of course I was rather shocked & told her that I didn't want to continue my order. She then went into the kitchen & then came back out to tell me that they do do sweet n sour pork so this woman is a liar & I wasn't impressed. I ordered soup ( chicken & sweetcorn & won ton ) both which were disgusting & the sweet n sour pork was extremely soft not crispy at all like previous sweet n sour porks at other chineses I've been too. I left the whole meal & put it in the bin as I didn't want to make myself ill as I wasn't sure if it was cooked properly as it was ready rather fast. I completely wasted my money (£20) & I ordered two sweet n sour porks which both went in the bin. Never again am I coming back after the receptionist lying to me & the food was just revolting. I will stick to my regular Chinese takeaway in future. Only went to this one as the other is closed on Wednesdays. Wish I hadn't bothered...

Ordered over the phone with 45 minutes prior to agreed collection. Arrived with the place absolutely packed with no communication from staff. Looked like they were doing one order at a time and took forever - were very quick to take the money but very slow with the “service”. Definitely wouldn’t use this place again after an almost 60 minute additional wait. Blaming “new management” who clearly cannot run a food venue. Really really poor service. Kept telling people a 15 minute wait which was closer to 60. Buyer beware……didn’t even have the right order when we got home 😩😩😩

Amazingly friendly people who run this place, and the food is absolutely delicious! This has become our go to Chinese, way better than others we have tried locally.

Just what you want from a takeaway Chinese. When calling on the phone the girl who answered was polite, efficient and well mannered. Again, when collecting, in the shop, the girl working was smiley, very polite and made the whole experience enjoyable. I don’t usually leave reviews but the girl really deserves the excellent feedback. Food was perfect as expected.

Definitely a place we'd want to return to again and again. The owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming and the food was great, especially the salt and pepper wings - hands down the tastiest wings we've ever tasted. The Special Udon noodles were also very flavoursome and the peach and mango fruit teas with lychee bubbles were sweet and refreshing. The whole order was delicious. Just what you want to enjoy at the end of a long day.

Had our first meal off the new menu, firstly I was impressed by the variety of vegan/vegetarian choices, often lacking in many take aways; all the dishes were delicious and the vegan beef and blackbean was probably the nicest I've ever had even before I stopped eating meat! Tried this takeaway for 1st time, nothing special. Advertised done in, but doesn't. Food seemed very salty. Hot and sour soup neither hot nor sour. Chicken,ginger and spring onion,salty very little ginger, filled out with lots of onion. Disappointing.
