No choice but all 3 courses well cooked using fresh local ingredients. You do need to be seated at 7.30 and inform the kitchen in the morning if you want dinner (or book in advance).

We’ve really enjoyed the food at Burrastow. The menu is good and changes every day. We had fresh salmon and pork as we stayed two nights over there.

Le propriétaire de Burrastow House utilise avec inventivité et harmonie les produits locaux pour proposer un savoureux dîner à ses hôtes dans une très belle salle à manger ancienne. La pause gourmande vaut le détour.

Who would have thought that you can get such a great meal so far out. When you have finished the three courses you will be glad you made the journey. Probably the best restaurant in the Shetlands.

Stayed one night and had dinner, there is no menu, you get served with whatever the owner fancies making. On arrival we were greeted warmly and offered tea and scones, which was delicious. at that time we were asked if there was anything we couldn't eat at dinner. My wife mentioned shell fish, the answer was, that's good as it not being served tonight. but still wouldn't say what was for dinner. It all made for an amazing stay wondering what would be served. A lovely starter salad, The main was Halibut and a chocolate covered something for desert. it was all very well cooked and presented. The room on the first floor was spacious, old and rustic. made you think you were in a "Who dunnit " film, especially with the horizotal rain one gets in Shetland lashing the window during the night. And now that I remember all this I've just changed my rating from 4 to 5.

This restaurant must be one of the best in Shetland. Pierre clearly loves to cook and this is shown in his attention to detail and suburb dishes. There is no menu and you need to book the night before, but we were never disappointed.

Stayed at Burrastow 6 nights and ate each night, excellent. No choice but will accommodate dietary needs with advance notice (like good veggie meals). Everything freshly prepared, home made (including bread and even croissants at breakfast) and making use of home grown produce from the garden. Lovely dining room with peat burning fire and views over the water.

The owner of the hotel, Burrastow House, is the chef. He is amazing. For our 8 nights there, we had 3 course meals, the starter was either a pasta or salad, the main varied from fish to lamb to chicken to beef. The desserts varied from cakes to mousee to brulee. People would come in just for dinner since the place is known throughout Shetland for its exquisite food. And indeed, the food is exquisite!

Seems like I'm not the only reviewer who had to pay a lot of money - £35 for cold overcooked vegetables and a bowl of tomato soup. The dessert was good but the price is just way over the top.

I was so looking forward to dinner here. We were non residents on holiday in Shetland and decided to eat here on our 25 year anniversary. We were greatly disappointed. Very ordinary 3 course meal. Tomato soup followed by roast lamb and chocolate mousse. It was very simple fare served without flare. It is a set menu which we expected but was not worth £35 per head. My main course was barely warm. We have had better 3 course meals for £20 in our local pub. I could have produced this myself and ensured that the vegetables were not overlooked and served cold. Not a great 25th anniversary celebration!

Wonderful experience at Burrastow House last week. I called Pierre as my wife cannot eat seafood and fish and he confirmed there wouldn't be any. We had an amazing roast tomato soup, followed by local lamb with a selection of delicious vegetables – dauphinoise potatoes, creamed potato, French beans, braised beetroot, etc. The dessert was a delicious light chocolate pudding with thin layers of sponge and almond butter. I don't eat chocolate desserts normally, but this was sublime.A good selection of drinks and wines and very personable service made this a wonderful evening out for myself, the wife and my mum. And it was also excellent value for money.

After living in Shetland in the 70's and 80's we wanted to take our two sons back to the islands where they were born, and first visits for their wives. A week self caterring at the Aurora in Walls, which is an amazing place, culminated in a meal for the six of us at Burrastow House on the last night....and what a memory. You must do this, do not leave Shetland before ringing Piere, the friendly little Belgium owner, peat fire lighter, chef, waiter, and booking a table for his set menu. Nervous at first as you have no idea what you are going to get. 'Anything you do not eat' asks Piere desperately trying to speak to you over his answer phone. No we eat anything......'not shell fish' shout my daughters in law.....'not black pudding' says another, the list goes on and Piere just takes it in his stride. Fish soup to die for as a starter, pork loin and amazing vegetables followed by home made orange ice cream....coffee and a walk around outside, a must in Simmer Dim. You will just love it!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We have stayed at Burrastow House three times and each time also stayed for the evening meal. We have also had a further evening meal there while staying elsewhere. In our opinion it is the best place to stay and to eat in Shetland. The place is bursting with character and style in a very relaxed, down-to-earth way and Pierre is absolutely lovely, so friendly and warm, let alone an amazing chef. Beautiful bedrooms, local food whenever possible (they grow some of their own veg and salads too), and even home-made croissants in the morning. The evening meal experience is not like a normal restaurant - there is no menu and you can't just book a table for whenever YOU want - dinner is served at 7.30 and you get whatever they have decided to concoct and it has always been absolutely amazing in our experience. (Obviously he tries to be flexible in case of food allergies/preferences if given enough prior warning). The house and the setting are also absolutely beautiful.

We had just been on a very wet and windy sea-side walk. The local cafe at Walls was closed and my companion was determined to have her afternoon tea and scones. We followed the signs to Burrastow House not knowing if they 'did' afternoon teas to wet walkers. To our delight we were given not only a warm welcome but a large pot of tea and the most delicious polenta cake.We had a quick browse round the bookshelves and decided that this place was such a jewel , we will definitely stay here on our next visit.

When you first realise that the building is actually a shop you are delighted to have found somewhere to buy food or in fact almost anything else you can think of. The bakery section is particularly welcome for hungry explorers. It’s a shame they don’t still have the DIY cafe.

The fish was good but the onion rings were the worst. And this is traditional so only salt and vinegar for flavor. This is the second time in Scotland I have had onion rings and I could not tell if there was anything there but batter. People were nice.

It’s more of a good cafe than a restaurant and it is also a caravan and motorhome site plus wigwams ( colourful wooden weatherproof huts). It’s at Braewick not Brae which is 15 miles south. It has all the facilities that a caravan/ motorhome site needs. Electric hook up, drive over drains, black water disposals, clean water available, good parking surfaces. Problem is it takes a bit of finding these facilities! Even the pitches take a bit of locating as only a couple are numbered. All the rest have been washed off, blown away etc. The showers are looking old and are difficult to manage. There is a playground and the beach is 5 mins walk but bear in mind this is 1000 km north of London, nearest neighbours are Iceland and Norway so the water is refreshing. But the views are spectacular cliffs of red rock and in the sea a set of rock stacks (the drongs) look like a Viking longship turned to stone. Wonderful to look at at midnight. You might see Foula, 40 plus km away. There are blow holes through the cliffs, take care. The Northmavine musicians play at Hillswickplus informal dancing for a great night out but it’s a 5 minute drive or an hours walk. Great place just needs an update.

Got scallops for a starter, it was a little too cold and a little unfamiliar with a few slices of sausage 🙂 Had the fillet as a main course - probably the best prepared and most tender meat ever. Exceptionally friendly service by a young but very attentive waiter.
