Rest and Be thankful scotland in Argyll & Bute

Stopped here this morning visited Johns snack bar. Lovely roll and square sausage with bacon and nice coffee. Will be back first time stopping here

This is a stunning location with a magnificent view. We got lucky with the weather and traffic on the day we stopped here. Now knowing this is here I would plan to stop with a picnic and a coffee next time I'm headed to the Highlands.

Wonderful place to stop for a brew and the view. We stopped on a trip around Loch lomond. There is a coffee/food van there aswell. Perfect place for a stop.

Beautiful place to stop off on a long journey. Awesome views, and a couple of interesting ruined old buildings to explore if you fancy a scramble! Close to lochgoilhead, where there is a petrol statio, shops, cafes, and pubs.

Stunning scenery from the viewpoint. A great place to park up and enjoy the majestic panorama. There is sometimes a mobile catering van for a drink and food if required.

The coffee is freshly made and probably too cheap for the quality. . Bacon and egg Rolls (buns) are the tastiest I’ve had. The owner always gives Bracken (dog) some free meat treats. Always pleasant and engaging. Not there in a Tuesday. Awesome.

We were stranded at Rest and Be Thankful with a flat tire. Rest area has a lot of spaces and a great food truck. No bathrooms.

A favourite rest spot for my parents, when they were holidaying maybe 30 years ago. We use it whenever we can. The tranquility and the view are almost emotional. And we see it as the gateway to one of our favourite touring areas.

Great run through the glen with amazing views from start to finish. Road works currently in the Glen. Would recommend travelling through the Glen along this road.

Beautiful scenery and even with the traffic controls in place. There was still a car park with a hot food van where you could sit and admire the view.

So we had read that Rest and Be Thankful had been closed from August landslides and by convoy you could do the Old Military road. Then it was reopened early September but sadly whilst we where visiting another landslide closed it with convey again on the Old Military road. We had been staying near Dunoon so had easy access to the ferry but we decided we could not miss the scenery and Loch Lomond so chose a Saturday morning when leaving the area to drive and so glad we did. Was no issue driving in convoy in fact made it an adventure. Was shocked the traffic but perhaps had been spoilt all week being off the beaten track

Apparently it's a well-known location for landslides that close the main road. We were able to use the military road (one-way system, so queues can build up) but when that's closed too it's a 60 mile detour!! When we reached the head of the valley we had to stop for a look, it was so stunning. One of the best examples of a U-shape valley I've seen.

It’s a scary road for those whom don’t travel it often but I’m used to it and it’s stunning views however it’s a small toad only enough for one car at a time. There are little places for cars to give way from time to time. I’d advise drive safely no speeding. It’s twisty and turning but incredible views

This area is stunning and the climb up the hill offer spectacular views looking back. The area is particularly busy with hill walkers understandably.

Beautiful place and great views if you are passing by but wouldn't go out of my way too much to visit. No other facilities apart from the food van but I suppose it's part of its charm.

We had a planned only a quick stop on the drive from GLA airport to Inveraray, especially because it was very, very windy and rainy. We ended up spending nearly two hours hiking down the Old Military Road. There were at least a dozen waterfalls springing from the wee hills all around. It was magical, majestic, and moving. We may not have been rested after the walk, but we were very thankful to be in such a beautiful place in 'good Scottish weather'.

With the look we got as we turned into the car park, should have probably kept driving. Wasn’t particularly friendly either when we ordered the food from his van. Only person that got any sort of pleasantries was what seemed to be a regular. Food was average, what you would expect from a roadside burger van.

This section of road is beautiful especially on a sunny morning or late afternoon. From the high point one can see the sweep of the mountains into the valley. Special place.

We had to call there after reading so much on line and it is a magnificent view. The main road from Glasgow through to the west runs along one side of the valley which does spoil it a bit, but then again, we came along the road to get there in the first place......

What a magnificent view no wonder it's called Rest and be Thankful. Stopped off on our way to Lochgoilhead. Recommended you stop and take in the view

Stunning road and journey across the beautiful Scottish scenery. Beautiful climb up and run down and serenely is stunning in every direction, well worth the drive

Ohhhhh myyyyy goddddd, this place. I must have been here fourteen times accords my thirty years on this planet and I swear it looks different and more beautiful every time.

It's a bit of an odd name but Rest and Be Thankful probably has it's origins in the travels who had to hike up the steep valley. Now the location is pretty much a rest stop at the top of the winding road. Still, it's a nice view looking back over the landscape you just traveled. It's worth stopping if you happen to be on the road.

Comparing this pass to others on a three week trip touring the West Coast of Scotland is probably a little unfair. Enjoyed the drive up to the peak and the views are good but not exceptional as I later found out in other locations

If you are visiting Scotland and actually still enjoy driving this is a must do trip. The scenery Is wonderful. To the West lies Argyll Lorn and a lot more. There was a wee mobile food van at the summit.

This is such a lovely place for a picnic and there is so many hills around for a good days walking. You have a view down the Glen and there are some great walks if you want to get some Corbett tick off. A lovely low level walk can be dun in four hours or so if you want to drive down the Glen.

The top of the glen on the old military road, and anyone who has walked or cycled up Glen Croe to get here will fully understand how it got its name. Great views from the top on a clear day. There is a small mobile refreshment canteen on site which serves surprisingly great coffee and a variety of carry out snacks.

Good walk in the rain, we had rain coats on and enjoyed the walk. Be aware, toilets are very far unless you prefer the big trees. Road under construction which takes a bit of time but this will be resolved in due time. Nice serene place

The view is amazing from this point. Hopefully you'll have a tour guide to explain the significance of this stop along the way.

A stop here, on our onward return journey, was worth while and memorable. You get a 360 fantastic panoramic view from this point and the weather god too was kind to us.As you turn around,you can see snow capped mountains all around you and a deep valley on one side and rocky mountains on another.

Explored the area around here quite a bit but found this spot to be quite spectacular. Park in the car park and you can look back down the valley and see for miles, no buildings, so totally unspoilt. When we visited it was not a completely clear day but still amazing, with blue skies it must be even more spectacular.

Impressive spot, worth a stop though for me it's the view over the small loch that draws me every time.Glen Croe very under-rated.Great drive.

Don't know how many times I've stopped at the top of the Rest - with family, with friends, with club mates and with my climbing guide Graeme.

I really like this road have been through many times and think the scenery is outstanding some places to park for a better view along the way undergoing some stabilisation works at the moment but delays not bad.

Well worth a visit. Stunning views yet again. Car park there to where you can park up and even stop for lunch at the burger van.

It has taken us a number of years to return to this beauty spot, and o was it so worth it. I do not remember the refreshment van but its good to be able to stop and gather ones thoughts with a hot drink. I hope to take the children to this spot soon, everyone should be able to see this

Add this to the list along with the Wryenose & Hardknot Passes and Applecross. They are all different and this has the 'big landscape' factor. Did not see any food outlet but that certainly did not detract from the time spent there. Whilst in the area also drive up Hell's Glen on the way to Loch Fyne...... beautiful country

Never seen the refreshment van but the views are worth the visit. We have been here in the summer and...

Just an amazing stop off point, I would highly recommend taking a short detour of the main road to have 5 minutes or longer just sitting and taking in the breathtaking views.

We drove past what amazing views just breathtaking from the road you are looking down to it i had to get my other half to tell me what it was called twice as very unusual name rest and be thankful glen coe.

Stop for a while, get a coffee or tea from the food truck if it is open, and just sit and take in the view. The clean air, the cool breeze -- wonderful.

A beautiful view. Peaceful and tranquil. Excellent views over Loch Long, which is itself a wonderful loch.

Great food always cooked to perfection and served which a smile.If your on "The Rest" make sure you stop for a snack you'll not regret it.

Climbing up the pass to get to Rest and be Thankful, what wonderful scenery all along the way, and when you get to the top -OOOOOH!! what a sight, the mountains with their snow capped peaks, it just looked as if we were in Switzerland it was so beautiful. We were in a coach and travelling up the mountain side which the road was a single track with passing places along the road, and was quite narrow, but ok, but when we arrived at the top and saw the view, it was certainly worth the visit, it was so peaceful and picturesque words cannot explain it. Anyone in the area MUST visit this place.

This place has one of the most magical views I have ever seen. Stop here and take in the view, especially on a warm summer evening. You may be lucky enough to see stags in the nearby mountain areas or watch the birds of prey take flight looking for supper! There's a wonderful property set in the heart of the valley, what a fantastic place to live. The single track road winds for 8 or so miles up through the mountains and back down to the most peaceful village of lochgoilhead, a place I have visited and stayed may times over the last 40 years. Once you have been it will draw you back many more times.great for walking , wildlife water sports or just a quiet relaxing break.

One of the best drives in Scotland in both summer and winter. You really get to see the countryside around you.NB: single track roads!

Must stop to take in the view. Never the same scene when stopping here. Recommended break to prepare, or recover for the road to / from Lochgoilhead,

Unfortunately the van was not on site but the view of the rest even on a damp January day is stunning

The name says it all. This is a beautiful spot to stop and take in the view so be careful not to miss the entrance to the car park at the top of the pass.

Worth stopping off for the view, even if the piece is Brocken by a diesel coach pulling up and 60 sightseers clicking away !

If you are travelling Glasgow to Inverary and beyond take a moment at this viewpoint.R really nice place to stop and picnic,tables and benches there.The viewpoint is at the peak of Old Drivers Road,when the cattle and sheep etc.were driven to the Market in Glasgow. The view is down the valley onto the Old Military Road( and for us who live here ,our default road,when landslips occur)PS The bacon buggies from the van are delicious,ge sells all sorts of snacks and drinks

Been up here many times and you just find that it takes your breath away. Travelled yesterday from Kintyre to Lancashire and stopped both ways for a welcome break from driving and had a top class bacon roll.

The view from the top is quite spectacular. Be careful when standing near the edge to take background pictures as the wind can suddenly gust even when it is not windy.

Amazing place to stop off for a picnic and rest up from the drive. Spectacular scenery and so beautiful at this time of the year.

When there is little or no traffic you cannot beat the drive over rest and be thankful, without needing to break the speed limit you can have a very satisfying journey.

One of the many great views that you get in Scotland !I was on my motorbike and I can really recommend this route over the pass for anyone on a bike.

Gorgeous spot with really stunning scenery and lovely for stretching your legs after a drive. Can get very busy but worth a brief stop if you can park. There's a mobile catering van for teas/coffees etc but nothing else other than views!

Stunning part of the country if a little busy. Difficult to get parked but well worth trying just to stop and take in the vista. There is a food van that was very popular too for those needing refreshment.

Not sure why this says it is a restaurant, as it is not. It is however an incredible view and a very historically significant place for the highland cattle drovers of long ago! There are places to sit and could place blankets for a picnic so I suppose that makes it like a restaurant. Rumor has it there is a tea van that visits there also but I have never seen it on either of the times that I have been there. Definitely worth a stop though on the road to Inverary from Glasgow!

Umm... was there a restaurant here? If so, I never noticed! We just stopped to admire the view! Definitely a great view down into the valley! From the previous reviews, others seem to just be commenting on the view too!

Best spot to take a break, soak up the views and sup a good cuppa from the excellent tea van. serves up a grand bacon roll and smashing chips too!

This place is special. A great view no matter what the weather and a perfect place to stop and take in the scenery.

I only drove up it and it was steep enough. My boyfriend cycled up it. Let's just say he was good for nothing after!Stunning view point.Lochgoilhead is peaceful and eerily beautiful. Great weekend escape.

Well worth a drive to get the panoramic view. We pass this viewpoint on our way to Glasgow.Lots of opportunities to take photographs as the mood changes every time.Plenty of walks and mountain climbs.

Wat a picturesque place to stop ....fantastic views across the old military road....weather was stunning ...viewpoint bustling with people marvelling at the views ....lovely and serene ...well worth the drive just to admire the views and picturesque settings

Great place to stop and marvel at the view. There is lots of parking here, some benches to sit and enjoy and plenty of space for a wee walk around and stretch of the legs.

This stunning vista is perfect for taking incredible photos and just admiring the Scottish landscape. The area also comes with a fascinating history. Visitors should be aware that landslides have and do occur, so should visit with caution and awareness.

Roadworks aside, lovely drive up to the crossroads to see this viewpoint. like to have a wander and take in the view. If the weather is favorable, there are several benches and picnic tables but dramatic even if seen from inside the car in a storm! This time, the hills around were snow-capped but it was sunny and clear at the crossroads....beautiful. It is a car-park/crossroads and many folk make a flying pit-stop of a visit but it is a place to just rest a while and be thankful even if just for the view....PS I've never coincided with the burger van!

Beautiful just beautiful! Well worth the travel and make sure you take your camera! Lots of wildlife and nature. Nice to get back to basics!

Bij toeval kwamen deze prachtige plek tegen; ik had hem wel gezien in onze reisboeken, maar niet gedacht dat we dit daadwerkelijk zouden gaan bekijken. Je komt er langs als je reist van Loch Lomond (Luss) naar Oban. via de A83. Prachtige natuur met adembenemend uitzicht. We gingen zitten op een bankje tegenover de pass en daar ontdekten we allerlei gedenktekens, in de meest serene, vreemde of mooie vorm. Hier wil ik graag terugkomen. Hier was het heerlijk om te vertoeven. En ook als ik mijn leven laat, wil ik hier herinnerd worden; een goed excuus voor mijn gezin en familie om Schotland te bezoeken.

this has to be one of the most stunning ares of europe that we have traveled in and through, also there was a place for coffee with great lattee

Stopped on our way to Campbelltown and had a roll with Stornoway black pudding and fried egg. Fresh cooked with 2 slices of black pudding, and I was asked if I wanted my egg yolk burst or not. Tasted awesome. I'll definitely be back. Not the cheapest I've ever had but one of the best and good value. The staff were very friendly and polite.

On route to inveraray jail we stopped at the viewing point and took in all the views we spent about an hour here and there's a burger van you can get something to eat and drink. The gran kids aged 2 and 11 loved it also a good stop for the dog.

We travel over the pass nearly every month, always pleased to see the man in the van. Fresh rolls, crisp bacon and a slice of the Stornaway to complete, keeps us going until we reach home. Excellent value, excellent location. If you have the time stroll down the relief road for some memories!

I've stopped here more than once over the last years. The view down the glen is beautiful. But a burger from the catering van that (not always) parks on the car park makes the visit must! Tastes great and the service is always good.

Car park with a view, is closed sometimes when road works are in operation, but is worth stopping for 5 mins to enjoy the view, Ben Ime and the Cobbler on the left and Ben Donich and the Brack on the right

Stopped here on way back, all I can say is, what a spectacular views, worth stopping here, you could spend ages just taking in the view

What a view we stopped here on the road home from a caravan holiday recently and it took our breath away, just stunning beautiful Scotland at its best !

A fabulous view through the glen you can stop at the car park at the top and if you are lucky the mobile van selling teas, coffees and bacon rolls will be there

There are just not many places in Britain, where you have such an amazing view, and can get a wee bit if grub to match! Great coffee, fabulous food cooked to order, and very, very reasonably priced too! Even on a dreary day, with the rain beating down and the wind blowing a hoolie, it's a pleasure of a pit stop, with Wee John cooking yer breakfast, a spattering of banter and an ever changing dramatic backdrop. I would say, don't make it an occasional stop if your passing through..... Make it a pilgrimage. Can't recommend it highly enough.

after contact in facebook we turned up with 16 people cpld and wet on a sunday lunchtime,we were warmly greeted and extremly well fed,the food was fantastic,freshly prepared and cooked,our german members were well impressed,a Big thankyou to you,we will definatly be coming back

The very best, fresh filled rolls. Love the bacon, sausage topped with onions and the Stornoway black pudding. Cannot be beaten!Lentil soup in the winter hits the spot also.

The views from the Top of the Rest are stunning regardless of the time of year. I drive up there to stop at the fantastic food van , the burgers are the best ever and on a cold day the hot chocolate is just what you need ,it's the best hot chocolate I've ever had. The owner John is always friendly and has a chat. I drive up from Glasgow as often as possible and it's worth the drive. I've recommended this place to all my friends. If you are in the area it's worth stopping you won't be disappointed

Superb view down the glen and great food. Clean, fast and reasonably priced but no loo! John is a fount of local knowledge, great blethers while you wait for your food to cook. (Everything freshly cooked) and the range of grub is impressive. Good coffe too.

Great place to stop and take in views. We didn't actually eat in the van but admired the view. The car park was a good stopping point.

if you are visiting there is no finer scenery than you get here the views are awesome and there are places all around here that have been used in many films such as restless natives

This is a great spot to stop on way from Glasgow the views are breathtaking and seeing the old military road gives you a feel what it was like for travellers before theroads were improved picnic tables and also a food van is available and its the best spot to sit and take in the views

What a beautiful spot to take a break & soak up the views. We were doubly lucky in that a food stall was operating & his chips were excellent. A lot of traffic was stopping to combine the food & views.
