I don't like it when restaurants ask for gratuity before you have even been served. For this I refuse to add it to my bill. We went twice here, once for a lunch and again for breakfast. The lunch you order online and they bring it to your table, the person bringing it the food was quite miserable and the food was mediocre. With the breakfast they have a separate menu, this is not done online and they have a separate menu for this, this is not stated any where and the only reason we found out was because one of the servers talked to some one that walked in and we over heard. No one spoke to use even though we were a group of seven adults. The breakfast was slightly above mediocre but the service again was miserable.

I rang to book my family in and spoke to George, who was instantly enthused and friendly. Due to the time only being 4pm, George advised we could head down right away on a first come first serve basis, as many of their reservations were made for after 5pm. As we were ready to eat and staying 10 minutes away at Mullacott Park, we decided to heed George’s advice. When we arrived, we were greeted by Alex, who looked after us for the duration of our visit. He found us a table for 6 fairly quickly despite the restaurant being quite busy. Once settled, I tried to place our order using the web service via the QR code. This was a smooth process until I noticed pizza was not showing on the menu. Luckily, by the time I realised this, Alex had returned to take our order the old fashioned way, so no big deal, but I would advise you look into fixing this for the future. Drinks arrived promptly; great choice btw, especially ales. Food choices were also good, with plenty of what you’d expect. My wife and I are vegetarian and were not limited to the standard choices most places offer. Food quality was perfectly acceptable; the pizzas were pretty standard, nothing to rave about but tasty enough. My sweet potato and chickpea curry was good, although I did miss having a naan bread with it. The loaded fries were huge and shared around the table, and the veggie starters were fine. Alex also very thoughtfully brought our dog some water. Atmosphere was good; bar is going for the surfer aesthetic with plenty of interesting memorabilia displayed on the walls, including some charming photos of the bar from past decades. Music choice was jolly and balanced, resulting in my girls singing along. Price-wise, higher than normal but then again it’s a coastal town catering for tourists, so pretty standard. Best of all, once we left and crossed the road to the car park, Alex came running out to return my son’s headphones, which he left on his seat; top service right there. Would definitely go back for a snack and a pint.

Visited twice during a four day stay in Woolacombe. On the first visit, which dictated the relatively low score, I was served by a sullen member of staff. I will deliberately avoid gender pronouns and say that I found that I was the one saying please and thank you, with this particular member of staff seemingly feeling it was unnecessary for them to follow suit. Two visits to the bar were made on this first visit and my experience was the same each time. On my second visit I was served by two different members of staff and on each occasion I had a completely different experience with what I would call a completely normal and polite exchange. Not a lot to ask for as a customer with a choice of where to spend my money. I will visit again and give another chance as I've never had this problem at The Red Barn before.

Id checked out online the reviews and menu and really looked forward to coming here We came in Friday about 330pm and it was fairly quiet. Most of the tables were in a mess so we headed towards one next to the toilet. As we say down a member of staff said , I'm cleaning that, can you sit over there. No please, no welcoming attitude. Said with a fed up expression. I said we want to sit here can you clean it while we are sat here. He walked off, grabbed a kids menu , chucked it on the table and walked off without wiping the table. If I didn't have my kids with me he'd have had a mouthful. I went to the toilet and they weren't clean either. As a result we got up and left and we Def won't be back. Attitude stunk almost as much as the dirty tables

Overall a bit of a disappointing experience. Service wasn’t great, with lots of having to go up to the bar to get menus and service (because the internet based ordering just wasn’t working). Food was very basic, and not the best to be honest. We had burgers and they were just about ok, kids meal again was just about acceptable. Considering this cost over £40, I’d expect better quality. Relying on their location perhaps, rather than trying to drive better quality and service?

My family and I have been visitng Woolacombe for the past 27+ years. The Red Barn used to be one of our favourite establishments, frequenting it on a near daily basis during our trips. Unfortunately, since changing hands from the former owner our experience has not been the same. I recall the days where the bar was bustling, the tables were packed, food was flying out the kitchen and the servers made you feel warm, welcomed and at home. I regret to say that on each visit we have made since, there is little to no atmosphere, the servers are indifferent and at times blatantly rude, and there appears to be no consistency in terms of the service, never quite sure whether the kitchen is open or the bar is about to close, with opening hours all over the place. In addition the cost for a drink rivals the prices of inner London, and with the abensece of good service or atmosphere it is not worth it. The impression I have is that the focus is placed on acquiring the most revenue during the peak holiday periods and letting standards slip the remainder of the time. Certainly can tell it is now run by a chain/company as it has lost its personable appeal. Such a disappointment.

It's laughable as it's March the place was empty and yet the wait, the food, the service were all poor. God knows what you'll do in the summer! Just wanted to thank Hall & Woodhouse for being such an important part of the community, by staying open throughout the slow season, providing visitors and locals alike a place to go...Completely understand the philosophy of other businesses, by closing down when business slows down, but don't agree....if businesses are closed doesn't motivate people to visit, good example, the village of Croyde, always busier than Wollacombe by having bars and pubs still open thru the winter....Thank you, Red Barn!

Ham and cheese should be basic items for either a cold store or even a freezer and if all else fails - there's a convenience store minutes away. We should have known better as a visit in September was a disaster - a small section nearest the windows deemed to be 'dog-free' but the lights kept flashing so had to be turned off, leaving the tables in semi-darkness. We walked out both times and possibly won't try again which saddens me as I first went to the Red Barn as a small child nearly 60 years ago. The recent takeover has been a disaster for food and service and the decision to allow dogs back in is totally wrong. Dogs should not be allowed where food is served. To complete the problems, there are three cubicles in the ladies toilets - one has been missing a lock on the door for at least two years and one has a dismantled loo roll dispenser. Do the staff/management have any regard for their customers? Sorry Red Barn - it seems your best days are just a memory now.

Sadly the Red Barn seems to lose a bit more character each time I visit and its made me realise how well managed this iconic venue used to be by the previous owner Angus. Firstly the side door was closed with a sign saying 'please use main entrance' for no apparent reason. Locals used to grab a beer and hang out on the steps here to chat about the day's waves or lack of. The background music was really grating and too loud for a chilled afternoon meal and beer.. they never seemed to get the music wrong before, or there would be classic surf movies playing. There was a blackboard saying 'waiting times may be longer than usual due to limited staff numbers' or something like that - well in 25 years of visiting the Red Barn before the change in ownership I don't think I ever saw that.. it was just well managed and if they were short staffed, they just cranked it up a notch and got on with it! Some of the furnishings look they've been handed down from a Wetherspoons which must've been upgrading. There's also some tacky new sweet vending machines. I'm sorry but this once characterful and buzzing bar/restaurant is just becoming generic and boring.. I guess to be expected since its been bought by a national chain and I'm sure the shareholders won't be bothered about any of this. It's just a shame when a place close to your heart loses what made it special to so many people over several decades. I'll still come for a drink and a burger from time to time as the view is incredible and the staff are always friendly!

We've been staying in Woolacombe for 4-5 years now & this place has been very up and down in that time. I can't fault the vibe outside when we're sat out front with a cold one watching the sun go down but inside is a different story. The dining area is tired with a fair amount of dust & cobwebs in places. They're using numbered tiles instead of the table numbers which I witness cause confusion whilst I was there - bizarre. Ladies toilets aren't great, one of the doors doesn't lock, another the bulb has died & the disabled has mouldy sealant around the sink. Cleaning/ maintenance is basic, & with it recently being taken over by new owners I don't understand why it hasn't been given a deep clean to freshen it up. Their Instagram posts about a new winter menu but I think it needs love first! Years ago you'd be lucky to just get inside the Red Barn nevermind sit down at a table. I hope it returns to its former glory.

One of the best wetherspoons in UK. Always clean and tidy, great service, and always a good selection of draft beer. However the food quality has plummeted, portions suffering from shrink-ation. I ha

What a lovely cafe serving classic British food. Well worth ordering the English breakfasts as they are great value for money and extremely tasty. So much better than a chain coffee shop and much frie
