Rakthai in Scottish Borders

We visited here whilst holidaying in Melrose. The meal was one of the best we have had and everything was cooked to perfection - the tastes were amazing. Definitely recommend the special duck dish, Masaman chicken curry and Pad Thai. You have to wait a little longer for the order, but it is well worth the wait. We will definitely visit again when we are next in the area

Absolutely fantastic Thai food - it took a little longer than some other takeaways but that was clearly due to everything being cooked from scratch, and honestly I’d be willing to wait twice as long as we did for food this delicious! We had red and green curries, tom yam soup and a chicken noodle dish, and we would be hard-pushed to choose a favourite from among them! My only suggestion for improvement for this restaurant would be that it might be helpful to update their website with a clearer/ more recent menu as we were trying to order based on an old photo - having said that, the lovely gentleman on the phone was more than happy to help us pick the correct dishes, so this really wasn’t too big of a problem. Thoroughly recommended! ❤️

We love the food, which is consistently delicious. We usually choose Gaeng Daeng and Gang Massaman curries, coconut rice and chicken satay to start. Thank you. excellent food, excellent service.

This is a long overdue review since our first ever visit in October 2024. Thai-speaking Martin the owner was most welcoming and hospitable, and the dishes from his Thai chef wife were delicious! A good friend with us had his first experience with Thai cuisine 😋 A much enjoyed evening after recovering from a wet, muddy and windy Devil’s Foot Half Marathon 👍🏾❤️‍🩹😊 Hope to visit again before too long! We spent a week in Melrose and had a takeaway from here twice - we had to get a second because the first was sooo good. Each dish was beautiful - fresh, tasty and the quality of the cooking and ingredients was noticeably better than pretty much any of the Thai meals we have had (which is a lot!) If we lived nearby we’d be here all the time!

We stayed in Melrose for 2 nights & were lucky enough to stumble across Rak Thai on the 1st night. The service was excellent & the food outstanding, so good we returned on our 2nd night. We ate in on both occasions, the take away has a couple of tables which were fine (other diners had brought their own wine). The best Thai ever!

We'd never tried here for food before today. Wow. All the food we ordered was delicious and we'll definitely return when we are in the area again. The portions weren't small in our minds given a recent review. Fantastic. A must try.

We’ve been eating here since it first opened, and the food is delicious. Although delicious the portions are almost half of what they used to be. Prices have gone up which is understandable, but for what we pay we’d expect the same amount of food as you used to serve when first opened. Food is still delicious as ever.

Holidaying in The Borders and staying at Dryburgh, nine of us (all geriatrics!) decided we'd like a take-away for our last night. We enquired as to where to get a good meal and a local friend said 'Try the Rak Thai - just trust me!' So we did, and we were NOT disappointed. We chose starters, mains and sweets for nine, and delivered to a remote farmhouse - a big ask. But they did it - everything they delivered to us was sensational, in fact the best take away ever in my opinion, and I'm approaching 82. I can't remember what we all had, but I think that the likelihod is that everything on their menu is delicious, and really fresh. We won't hesitate to return next time we're there, in fact the Rak Thai alone is enough to entice you to the Borders! Please consider Chester for your next Take away!!

We drove 20 minutes to get a Thai from Rak Thai. My gosh did we hit the jackpot!!! It took a little longer than they expected but we have never had such a great Thai meal! I wish we weren’t on holiday and this was our local Thai cos we would be here every week!! If you are looking for a take away put this at the top of your list!! Incredible experience, from entering the door to ensuring that every last drop of food in our Express Boxes was consumed with a big smile on our faces! Return visit having travelled down from Glasgow and absolutely no criticism of this establishment's cooking skills. Those Thai ladies produced a meal that had us both thinking how lucky the folk of Melrose are to have such a high quality business on their doorsteps. On entering we were welcomed by the owner and our orders taken with a friendly, knowledgeable and professional attitude. Tonight's choices were Express boxes No.36 and 38, both of which were cooked fresh to order and served piping hot, with napkins and cutlery included. Absolutely incredible flavours to really awake your taste buds and the portion control was spot on for a couple who had been out walking. No sign of the kitchen taking short-cuts since our last visit or using catering pack pre-made sauces. Our choice of meats was one with pork and the other with beef, both of which were very tender and full of flavour. It's really hard to write this review as it was such an overwhelmingly positive experience with nought to moan about (other than trying to find a parking space and the Council trying to destroy the local economy with 20mph speed restrictions). Thanks again to The Rak Thai team for producing such an amazingly good meal - we know exactly where to eat on our next trip to Gala!

First time ordering from Rak Thai. We hadn’t realised the awaited text notification was an essential part of the pick up process and not just a friendly reminder that the order will be ready soon although the food was right on time so not a problem. The meals were absolutely beautiful. We’ve not visited Thailand - yet but we can say that the delicious meal was right on par with a couple of very well respected Thai restaurants. Even better, there are plenty of special dietary options.

Extremely high quality Thai food. Very fresh and they use an incredible array of spices and ingredients which brings out amazing flavour in their dishes. Best Thai food takeaway I have ever had bar none, and we eat out a LOT !

Entered the place ,pokey little tables . No one else in shop. Offered us a menu and when we sat down ,bluntly said if we were eating in it would be over an hour wait. Yet we had not chosen anything . It would be good for a casual night out/quick dinner but we had a take away... And it was really, really good. The service when we called was practical and to the point but so friendly. A text to say the food was ready is great when your in the pub across the street. No hesitation in recommending Rak Thai.

You might disbelieve the positive reviews. True, some are a bit gushy, but I know why. The food is really very good. Why is the best Thai food in Melrose - because it is. Choose no chilli symbol for mild dishes if you really don't like chilli, which I suspect is catering to British tastes. We had chicken green Thai curry, chicken Massamam as part of the banquet deal with spring roll starters - a portion is two, we had veg and chicken, and again light and fresh tasting. Also Pad Naman hoy - a veg stir fry (which didn't have lots of onion), which was light and fresh and a house special kao na bhet (roast duck breast). The food was not dominated by lime leaves and lemon grass, there is lightness and balance to this food, that is suspect is very Thai. I would have liked to try a noodle dish and something with crunchy peanuts but was outvoted. The kitchen handles peanuts, but a friend who has a peanut allery can eat there if she avoids it as an ingredient. We were left wanting to eat their food again, so order at start of holiday so you can do the same.

Would highly recommend this Thai restaurant. We actually didn’t eat in the restaurant but had 2 takeaways when staying in Melrose. We chose Chicken Massaman curry with sticky rice. It was delicious and the best Thai curry we’ve had for a long time.
