This was our second visit to Raj of Islington (we live locally and have just discovered it), and we were once again so happy with the experience! The food is a knock-out! Authentic regional dishes from different parts of India were varied, tasty and delicious. Favourites includes chicken jalfrezi, a really good paneer and spinach dish, a Goan prawn dish with coconut and a bindi vegetarian side. Fresh naan from the tandoor was also extremely more-ish, and my husband enjoyed the pilau rice (personally I’m not a fan of rice when surrounded by much more interesting dishes…). We were served by the same friendly and capable waiter both times. He was warm, courteous and struck just the right balance in chatting to make us feel very welcome and then leaving us to enjoy the feast in front of us. This place is an absolute gem on the Holloway Road. We will be back again soon!

Food took a long time to arrive and then arrived cold (even though there was hardly anyone there). We ordered the korma and sheekh kebabs and they had almost no spice or flavour. The goats cheese and sweet potato tikkas were nice however

I think good Indian food is hard to find in north London. I was very impressed by the Raj, very flavoursome curry and the service was great. It was extremely quiet, I can’t think why - more people should go here.

We walked in without a reservation looking at the rating on Google maps. That's a big mistake it turns out. They didn't have tablets free and told us it would take 20 minutes. We were ok with it. We got a table within the specified time. BTW, there is no waiting area. Just a sofa for three. Then, the bad experience started. Nobody showed up for twenty five minutes to the order. Then, they took the order. Then, we waited, waited for close to an hour. No food. No update. We tried to get the attention of the waiter. No luck. He would simply pass us by. One of us finally got up to corner him and asked for the status. His answer was that another party of ten before us was still waiting for food and it would take at least another 20-30 minutes before they could serve us. We finally decided to walk. The server didn't even express a regret. I never had a worse service experience. We never got the food so no idea how good it was. And, the place noise level is closer to a pub than a restaurant. They messed up our evening so badly.

Take it from a south asian, hands down the best south asian food in Islington. Every dish had its own unique taste, which is amazing. Fresh food, great service and great prices for fine dining experience.

Food was mediocre - too sweet and not very spicy. We wanted to order 4 fixed sets for 5 people suspecting it was going to be too much food. They told us we had to order 5, as it wasn't for sharing. So we did. After 2 appetizers they gave us mains to be shared... And it was too much. Pure greediness, never coming back.

Booked a table for 2, has to keep asking for everything like, drinks menu was very limited, ran out of lamb shank, taken cocktails of the list, waiter never came to table at all to see if we needed more drinks or to ask if food was ok, didn’t wipe down tables when finished food, I went here 2 years ago & it’s really changed, won’t be going back!

We had lost our previous reliable Indian restaurant. Not careless of us, a new owner stole its soul and sacked the chef. The Raj was therefore a new venture for us, after an unanticipated fasting period, so we went with high hopes and experienced palates! Although we were the only inhouse dining customers on the drizzly post-lockdown Tuesday evening, the Raj did not disappoint us one jot. Assad & Nayeem, the two waiters on duty were enthusiastic, knowledgeable and attentive. We ordered a typical set of dishes, but noted with interest the wide range of unusual dishes and the heritage locales (Kashmir, Delhi etc.) which identified them. There was care over service, and consideration of appropriate pauses between courses. The ambience of the expensively refurbished restaurant was romantic and stylish. The sister restaurant is in South Kensington, and this Holloway siting is an audacious move. It deserves to triumph if Islington food-lovers give it the support it seeks! All the food was first class. Imaginatively presented, well spiced but not overly hot, tasty and generous proportions. The mushroom rice was delicately fluffy and escaped the usual pulao oiliness that often comes cloggingly with it, and the aubergine dish was the best we had tasted of its genre for years. The tarka daal was prepared and served exactly as the memsaab specified. Perhaps the spinach could have been a touch less fluid in the main paneer dish, and a diminution in the chilli added therein, but this would be our only critique of the cuisine. We welcomed Assad's bold assertion that "The chef is the head of the restaurant!". The courteous 20% discount (until June) off food has been inadequately advertised, in our opinion, and this makes it a particular destination to seek out at the moment. But even when this welcome feature ends, the quality of the cooking and the upmarket experience at the dining tables, raises this establishment head and shoulders over others in Islington that seem uninspiring by comparison. Excellent food. Some of the best Indian I've had in North London. Big issues with service. One couple walked out without paying because they had been waiting so long while I was waiting for my take away. However, they gave me free beer for my wait so I left feeling rosy.

Watery and chicken tikka had not been marinaded in tikka. I wouldn't mind but it was £18 for a takeaway containing rice, bread and a chicken tikka massala. For a first experience I probably won't be back unfortunately.

A cut above most Indian food. One of the best places in town. They also use good quality ingredients including the chicken. Samosas were obviously hand made. Unusual range of regional specialities and not overpriced.

Ordered from Uber Eats, and I accidentally ordered Chicken Biriyani instead of Lamb (I don't usually go for Chicken because I find it to be dry) but to my surprise to chicken was so juicy and succulent and full of flavor! The Lamb Rogan Josh was also delicious!! Overall 10/10! Will now be my go-to Indian Takeaway.

I read that this place was highly rated so we cycled up last night. We were not disappointed, a nice little menu that feels a lot more sensible than most curry houses. I had the railway lamb and HelBel had and excellent prawn dish and shared black chickpeas. It was delicious. The service was excellent and it's a lovely looking relaxing place to eat. We'll be back.

I went here for my cousin birthday meal they were very rude made us feel like we shouldn’t have been there and very over priced the food was standard really nothing special not some place I would consider re visiting

Came here for my birthday meal. No flavour in the food and lots of sneaky charges on the menu. Servers watched whispered about my table for most of the evening creating and not friendly at all. Another customer even asked for something to which one server hid behind the bar to laugh at her request, very unprofessional and uncomfortable. Definitely wouldn’t recommend.

Stylish interior, good service, and tasty dishes (especially liked the paneer shashlik). Re-designed over the lockdown period & all the better for it. My dinner companion enjoyed the passion fruit cocktail.

Delicious! Generous portion, fair price, and have a wide range of vegan options available (below are Saag Bhaji - cooked spinach and Tadka Dal - cooked yellow lentils). The staff is very friendly too. Would definitely go back.

Having eaten here three or four times I would recommend dining at the restaurant rather than ordering online. On occasions where I have eaten in, it has been quiet, service has been about right and the place generally has a pleasant and welcoming vibe. The menu is interesting and has more detailed and helpful descriptions of the dishes than most of these restaurants. However, the cooks don’t really understand western tolerance for spicy-ness. My companion asked for the Railway Curry (lamb) on the proviso that it would be mild and, you guessed it, too spicy. Similarly, I recently ordered takeout from this place and it was awful. For the most part it was cold and the curry itself was more water than food. The worst part is that I felt sick all night and ending up vomiting most of it at 4am!

Went here for a pre cinema dinner. It was fantastic. I had had three Indian meals during my two weeks visit to London all included lamb and this by far was the best . The meat was so succulent and tasty. Would highly recommend

Probably one of the nicest Indian meals I have had. The presentation of my Chicken Tika was superb. The chicken was succulent. The accompanying vegetable side dishes were varied and all excellent. The service was attentive and informative when it came to the menu. Absolutely worth a visit.

Welcoming and friendly staff, food was delicious. I'm vegetarian and had plenty of choice. Wpuld recommend the sweet potato tikki and the ananas dessert. So lovely!

Really good food, I had the Mung Salli Zandaloo and it was delicious. I also loved the Bhaji and the samosa, super tasty. The venue is really tastefully decorated and the staff are friendly and professional. Good selection of wine and spirits too. I will definitely come back and bring some friends along.

Tried the Raj for the first time this season since it used to be The Indian Ocean. It has a fantastic menu and the food was incredible. Top top quality meal and will be a regular for me from now on!

I found the design of this restaurant is very nice and stylish. It has the right vibe for the evening meal. The staff is very polite and nice. The food is super tasty and the price isn't high for this quality. I definitely would recommend you give it a shot.

I walked past her last night and saw the set menu outside. It was 2 courses for £9.95 or 3 for £12.95. I decided to go in and was really surprised at how modern and nice it was inside. A really big bar, looks like a cocktail lounge. I ordered a basked of poppadum's and chutneys which were all fresh and a bargain at less than £2. The set menu was very limited but really nice. I had the only starter which was a samosa and chicken thigh, both really fresh and nice. The main was a choice between a few dishes, I opted for the lamb. It came with rice or naan, I had the the rice which was cooked to perfection. The lamb was so juicy and tasty. I had a small beer with the meal, all it all including service it was about £18. Really amazing food, service and value. I will be back when I am in the area.

Fair play, as a guy who has eaten hundreds of indian meals, that was absolutely insanely good (late at night). The mushroom rice was infused with garlic beautifully and the Saag Aloo was superb. The Lamb Vindaloo was fantastic and the chunks of lamb were huge and super moist- really different to most Indians I've had. Really a super surprise and really pleased. Absolutely one of the best meals I've had. Thank you Raj.

Sit in, take away or delivery; the food is always fresh, fulsome, flavoursome and passionate. The menu covers the full flavour range of the sub-continent with sincerity and attention to detail. The portions are generous and reasonably priced. I am largely vegetarian, and they excel - their Sag Aloo is outstanding as is their Baingan Thiyal (aubergine, tomato etc), while even a simple Dhal is subtle and flavoursome. I have tried a variety of their meat dishes, and have been equally impressed, especially by the selection of authentic regional dishes on their menu. Eating in is a special treat (the service is excellent, the venue spotless), but I live close enough by that home delivery arrives fresh and hot. I have visited India multiple times and eaten in multiple States with their own distinct menus and I highly recommend Raj of Islington. They are a real asset to my home neighbourhood of Holloway.

Myself an my partner came here last night on a date and had a completely fantastic time. The portions were really generous, the food was utterly delicious, and the staff were lovely. We had appetisers (the chicken tikka starter was ENORMOUS and unbelievably good) followed by a main, with 3 drinks each, as well as poppadoms, bread and rice, and the whole evening came to around £33 each! We had to leave in a rush due to a cinema booking, but the team were fantastic and potted everything up in takeaway boxes immediately. When my girlfriend left her hat in the restaurant, one of the staff ran after us down to road to make sure she got it back! We'll definitely be visiting again soon, and this is absolutely now our go-to takeaway for curries!

Found the Raj for the first time this evening and was really impressed! Started off with some cocktails, I never considered cocktails with curry but these cocktails were great - the watermelon martini and Hendricks cooler were our favourites. Very impressed to see a separate allergens menu and it just looked like a normal menu rather than the embarrassing ring binder you usually get given. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and the food was lovely. The interior definitely makes you feel like you’re on upper street rather than Holloway Road - a very pleasant surprise. Thanks all, we will be back time and time again.

I went to Raj in August with a friend. We had appetizers and a main meal. Honestly, we were impressed by the huge portions and by the delicious food. Staff is absolutely amazing, very kind, friendly and attentive. As I have few food intolerances, the staff was very very kind and helped me to choose accordingly. Also, the place is spotless..so I totally recommend it!

Very good food and reasonably priced

The restaurant is very chic and has fantastic food. We had the butter chicken and kadhai gosht (which is pretty spicy but still amazing) with some rice and garlic naan. Naim has done a fantastic job serving us. Will definately visit again!

Stumbled upon this restaurant almost by accident and I was delighted I did. I’ve eaten in dozens of Indian restaurants, and this might just be the best of the bunch. An interesting menu which goes beyond the standard fare, and everything we ate was top-rate. They even know how to mix a great cocktail. We’ll be back
