We popped in for lunch on a Friday. It’s a great traditional village pub with wood burning stoves, wooden beams and flagstone floors. The food is excellent and they have something for everyone. Plenty of pub classics. My friend had faggots and mash. And lots of lighter bites. I had the prawn cocktail. Both meals were very generous. I’d have struggled to eat a main course after my starter. They have a couple of good local real ales and a good selection of other drinks. It’s a walker and dog friendly pub. Highly recommended

A hidden gem. Read good reviews. had been to Cheddar Gorge & Wells so decided to visit. Very friendly cosy country pub, dog friendly. Meals were amazing value for money & huge portions (took some of it home). Not your usual standard chain menu. Definitely recommend home made broccoli & stilton quiche, proper chunky chips . Bit in the middle of nowhere but worth going to.

A lovely old pub in a somewhat isolated location, it’s got all the ingredients of a proper country inn with a flagstone floor, some exposed brickwork and wood panelling on the walls, a friendly barmaid and a good choice of beers. The only downside was a couple of rather noisy children running around, although they were at least largely contained to the smaller rear room. The menu offered an extensive selection of “pub grub” dishes, although it would have been nice to have been told when getting the menu that the fish pie was off – it’s always very disappointing having spent some time deciding what you want only to find out that it’s unavailable when you try and order it.As my first choice wasn’t available, I queried how hot the curry was as it was described as a Madras which is generally too hot for my liking. The barmaid informed me that it wasn’t as hot as the chilli, but was very tasty, so I went for that. All I can say is that I don’t know where she gets her curries from, but it’s certainly not the same place as me if she thinks that is tasty. There was absolutely no heat to it at all – if you imagine a Spanish dish perhaps with chicken, tomatoes and peppers, you’ll get the idea. It certainly wasn’t a curry of any description, never mind a Madras. Other than that, it was ok, although certainly nothing spectacular. I’m not sure if it was home-made or not, but I suspect not, it had that boil-in-a-bag appearance to it and it’s really the sort of thing that I would have expected to get in a Wetherspoon’s for about half the price. It came with a couple of poppadums which again were ok, if a little on the greasy side, and it wasn’t until I started the second one that I found some mango chutney hidden underneath. This was in a disposable paper pot, so again, presumably bought in and really didn’t taste that great. Across the table a beef, Butcombe and mushroom pie fared slightly better, it was certainly a generous portion and cut from a larger pie rather than being self-contained. It had some decent chunks of nice tender beef, but was a little lacking in flavour and needed plenty of seasoning.Overall, whilst this is a lovely pub to stop for a pint, in fact one of my favourites, I won’t be rushing back for the food any time soon.

Even the kids finished there very generous sized portions. Puddings are often a let down but not here. Kids loved the ice cream and the chocolate fudge cake I’m told was lovely. But the treacle sponge with custard was so soft and scrumptious. Just a lovely pub in a lovely area. Such a shame that these places are slowing closing. Here’s hoping that this one is here to stay. My wife and I visited this pub on Father's day the 16th June and I did phone before to make sure we could get a table as our first and second choices were full. I spoke to a chap who said that he does not take bookings and to "come along mate" and he would find us a table. We arrived and ordered drinks and found ourselves a small table and then managed to move to a larger table with more room and out of the main walkway. Once we decided what we wanted to eat I went to the bar and ordered our food and there was no mention of any time delay so we sat and waited for our meal to arrive. After 1 hour and 15 minutes I asked the waitress if she could please check on our order as people we know had actually arrived well after us and had already been served. She said that it was on it's way so we waited until I went to the bar and asked the chap if he could please check our order and he said yes and then turned his back and went to the till so I went back to my seat to wait, and wait we did until I returned to the bar to ask again and was told by the chap to calm down as it was on it's way at which point I told him we have been waiting for one and a half hours for fish and chips and a lasagne. He accused me of abusing his staff because I asked her politely to check on our order and stated that it was Father's day so they were busy!! He also stated that if I did not like his service he would refund our costs but at this time we had not had any food!! I held my tongue and went back to the table and eventually our average meal arrived, which we consumed and paid the bill and went home. A happy Father's day had by all.Yes the pub was busy, yes it was Father's day but surely a couple more staff would have helped and also if the food was going to take that long to arrive maybe this should have been mentioned when we ordered, I'm afraid that the attitude of the landlord was unacceptable and we won't be going back again even though we are local. There are other places to eat at within 10 minutes from the Queen Victoria. I have not written down exactly how I felt at the time and how I feel now as it would involve expletives, I am still angry that our meal was spoilt by one person.

I was disappointed with this. The beer at this pub is good, and it’s a homely sort of a place. The food, however, was not great. If a kitchen overdoes the chips, it doesn't say a lot for it. And the portions: the mound of peas with the steak and chips was far too much even for Jack Pudding's healthy appetite. So I'm afraid I won't be rushing back. Oh - and I was hoping for an all day breakfast, which wasn't an option...

Over the Christmas period, the landlord festoons the outside of the building with lights and ornaments to make it look like a gingerbread house - it is very effective and very pretty. There is also a very peculiar Christmas tree made out of used wine bottles! Once you venture into the pub, thing do return to normal and the rooms are more subtly decorated. The Inn is quite old and you can tell this from the low(ish) beamed ceilings and traditional stone walls. It is a lovely cosy place when the log fire is rouring away. This has to be one of the most friendly pubs I have ever visited as the staff alway greet you with a smile. From what I saw, the mainstay of the beers on tap is the local Butcombe Ales but I understand they do guest beers as well.We stayed for food whilst there, my wife has Simerset Ham & Eggs whilst I opted for Handmade Faggots - both of which were superb. The menu on offer is traditional grub rather then anything fancy (and I see nothing wrong with that at all).Being fairly local (WsM) - now I have found this little gem, I will definately be going back.

Friendly staff, great location and fantastic food. Loved it and with great company too. Just up the road from Ebbor Gorge which was a great way to walk of the huge stomach!

I rang to book a table for Sunday lunch and was told we do not take bookings first come first served basics, so we arrived just after 12pm and the place was packed, this place really as a name for itself, we grabbed one of the last tables and settled down with a pint of draught Butcombe beer fab, typical country pub order at the bar they drop the food, nothing wrong with that . The roast Beef was to die for and more that a plate full. Great atmosphere charming staff, love this place makes it worthwhile coming back home for. Thank you

A bit idiosyncratic inside - furniture reclaimed from many sources; pews, barrels and the like. I suppose you'd term it "eclectic" but the overall effect is lovely - as though time had frozen a long time ago! And log fires so very cosy.It took a few minutes to get seated at a table as it was quite busy at the bar but everyone friendly, smiling and helpful. You order food at the bar and, in spite of being busy we only had a short wait before our meals arrived. A number of the items on the menu are available as smaller portions and having seen the size of the beef and ale pie meal we settled for smaller portions for our lasagne and curry. Glad we did as it left room for a pudding and coffee! Couldn't fault the food - it was excellent and great value for money.Dog- and child- friendly and they don't mind hikers' boots. Pubs don't come much better. We'll be back with the family!

Some chains of pubs do well but they can never be the "real thing". The Queen Victoria is the "proper job" for sure and just a bit eccentric too. First time I have ever sample Rhubarb Cider - just mentioned it having seen the sign and the next moment a sample was handed to me. Just like not having to lodge your card - this feels a proper pub and you feel they trust you. The scampi was as you would expect but the salad with bacon and chicken was just amazing - nothing arty - just a damned good plateful. It is a wonderful place which goes well with the wonderful area. Please will brewers not read this report - it is just lovely as it is and a pub chain would be sure to ruin it

Staying locally in Priddy, for a short break I visited the "Victoria" for evening meal. The most striking thing about the place is the exterior:- what seems to be a very attractive building of local stone and dating almost certainly from the middle ages, is completely hidden by the framework of a marquee and an old horse drawn wagon full of beer barrels. This is what is first visible as you approach the place! The frontage is also cluttered by a plethora of coloured picnic benches. The interior has a certain character but appears cluttered, due to over-size tables in very limited space. The "log fire" is a glass fronted log burning stove. For some unfathomable reason there are two ancient and extremely ugly, cauldrons; one each side of the log-burner, in what was an "Inglenook" fireplace.Close by the log-burner is a modern "repro" rocking chair with a notice attached instructing that it should not be used!A wide range of beers are available and the food is okay. The staff are efficient and friendly. The greatest asset this pub has is its location, the whole surrounding area of the Mendip Hills is breath-taking. I mile outside the village to the east is a view-point with vistas over Wookey Hole to Glastonbury and to the west views to South Wales over the Bristol Channel. You can visit ancient monuments which are only reachable on foot. Priddy village is not the prettiest of places, but has a splendid village green, a lovely church and village school. There is a shop about one mile out of the village to the north-west, although limited stock, there is a newsagents. Wookey Hole and Wells are within easy reach and there is B and B accommodation, campsites and a caravan park on the village outskirts.2,

We were invited here with friends who had previously visited, it is a drive of around 30-40 minutes from where we live, quite busy when we arrived, it is in a lovely setting and very well laid out, the beers are excellent and very well kept, we all decided to go with the beef, butcombe and mushroom pie, and wow!!! I can make a good beef pie but this was exceptional absolutely fabulous and so huge I could not finish it, much to my annoyance, well worth the drive and will definitely be re visiting in the very near future, a great menu whether you want meat or veggie dishes, highly recommended

This pub is a little off the beaten track but I would drive a number of miles to visit it if I stayed in the area again. We were staying in Wookey Hole and stumbled across the pub on Monday evening. Tired and not wishing to drive too far we decided to call in and I'm so glad we did. We were greeted by lovely, friendly staff who were keen to make our visit special. Nothing was too much trouble and they were extremely attentive. And the food, well all I can say is - this is the best pub grub I've had in a long time, and the prices are very reasonable. We enjoyed it so much, we decided to go back last night for a second visit and again we weren't disappointed. I would definitely recommend this pub to anyone wishing to get a superb meal with a friendly service.

This country pub has a lot of charm and character, popular with the locals. The beer selection was disappointing but acceptable. I have given up expecting great food at pubs. They simply cannot afford a good chef for the sporadic trade they get, so be prepared for freezer food. The Queen Vic is no exception apart from the fact they have priced it accordingly and you are not being ripped off. It is cheap and cheerful so full marks to them for no pretensions.

So after reading a few bad reviews on here about this place I decided to write a review myself, after being here today I can say that these people writing the bad reviews are being extremely pedantic, you're in the country you're not in Oxford or London now so yes there is going to be flies and the buildings are more than likely going to be old, writing a bad review based on that is pathetic! If a place genuinely deserves a bad review then I'll be one of the first to write about it but this place certainly doesn't deserve one. After a long day of walking I decided to pop in and have a drink, after reading the menu I decided to have something to eat.The staff were friendly, the food was served in good time and was delicious nice and hot and full of flavour. Everything was decently priced. The only bad thing I have to write which isn't really that bad is that the outside seating area could do with a sweep. Well done guys thanks for a lovely meal I'll definitely be coming back!!

Decided to have lunch here as my partner and I had not visited for many years. On arriving at the pub, the car park was virtually full which was a little surprising as the time was only 12:30 on a Wednesday. However, when we went into the pub there were only a handful of people to be seen. Slightly puzzled, I enquired of the friendly young lady behind the bar whether we would be okay for lunch. Smiling, she said of course and that we could sit anywhere but recommended that we sit to the left of the bar as there was a party of 30 ramblers due in at 1 o'clock who would take up the whole of the pub to the right. Great advice and an answer to the puzzle of the full car park.Settling in, we ordered a jacket potato and the beef, Butcombe and mushroom pie, washed down with a glass of Merlot and a pint of Butcombe Original. The food arrived quickly, was piping hot and quite frankly, superb! The pie had a great crust and a equally good pastry bottom. The beef was lean and succulent. The chips were large, crisp and plentiful. The prices were also very reasonable.Sure enough, whilst we were eating the ramblers arrived and the noise levels went up but they quickly settled into the right hand side of the bar which meant we weren't bothered excessively, leaving us to enjoy our lunch.Overall, we were glad to have revisited after so long. I don't think we'll wait as long for the next visit. One small gripe though was that although the pub carries Butcombe branding, you can't use your Butcombe Loyalty Club card as it is tenanted rather than managed. Don't let this put you off though as you'll be missing out hugely!

We had a family gathering at the Queen Vic. As we were a large group I had to send our order through before (but we added to it on the day) - no problems. There is seating outside as well. The place was packed. Dogs are welcome. I had the garlic mushrooms followed by a mixed ploughmans. Others at the table tried the salmon and prawn cocktail, crab cakes, soup, cheddar ploughmans, fish pie, fish and chips, chicken and bacon salad and hunters chicken. All of our food looked great and everyone said how tasty it was. Some of the group went back to the pub in the evening for a drink and the pub was still packed.

A Tuesday in September with the sun shining made this a very good selection. A number of couples outside in the sun, but we decided to eat inside as not too warm out.A good welcome from the bar, with good beer and wine range.Decided to eat and we were surprised at the portion size, really good.My wife had crab cakes and salad to start, I had Brie wedges and salad. Both very good, but a little more of the dipping sauce would have been nice.Main course was a ploughman' for each of us, smoked salmon and prawn for my wife, mixed cheese and ham for me. Again very good portion size.Over all, a very good find in a little Somerset village and very good value for money.

Proper old village pub, we stoped to get an early evening meal. Beers and draught ciders were excellent. Helpful barman allowed us to try samples of cider which were all lovely. The food was wholesome, not fancy. Steak and ale pie was delicious, as were the home-made faggots, mash and peas. Nice relaxed atmosphere. The pub was very busy with lots of local customers. The service was excellent, prompt and friendly.

Situated high in the Mendips is a traditional pub with retained old features and artifacts - none of your plastic makeovers here as they would not go with the stone floors or accommodate walkers in comfort. There is a wide selection of good pub grub. The lady serving was polite and efficient. Meals arrived within 15 mins of ordering. It looked good, it was hot, it tasted good and there was plenty of it. If you like homemade beef pie, chilli beef or fish pie you cannot go wrong. It was our first visit to the Queen Victoria and I am sure it will not be our last

Always a pleadure to visit this typical English pub particularly now the rival New Inn has closed. Large car park with hardly an empty space - always a good sign! Only popped in for a lunchtime snack. They were happy for us to share a baguette with a beautiful bowl of chips. The choice of draught beers was a little disappointing, However, the ambience was good, the staff smiling and obliging. Lovely location.

Gets very busy, serves decent beer and reasonable food. Very disappointed with the quality and standard of the toilets, my wife was particularly wary about eating food at an establishment with toilets of that standard. Let down by something quite straightforward (you would think) to keep on top off!

This is a traditional pub just off the village green. Nice welcome and cool inside on a Summer day away from the crowd outside. Good ale and basic but very good pub food. The corned beef hash was excellent and I'd love to have it again. I would imagine in Winter with the fire going it is really cosy and you won't want to go home!

Family meal and taste of local cider. We were camping near by, so very convenient for quick meal out. Food was served fast, reasonable standard of food. The kids enjoyed the gammon, cheddar and ham ploughman's was a good size and too big portion for myself to eat. Bacon and cheese burger was reported to be delicious. Washed down by local cider. Tasty and refreshing. Good value meal, reasonably priced. Good playground for the kids to keep them occupied. Only criticism would be dirty glasses and dishes left in the playground area tables attracting local bug life.

My partner and I had dinner here not so long ago, whilst visiting the area (we were camping at Nettwood Farm not too far away). The service was all good from the various staff members and they had a good selection of food & drinks available. My partner is vegetarian and they were able to offer a couple of decent options (not just the usual mushroom risotto that most places think is acceptable). They did yummy desserts too!The pub had ample parking and when we arrived there were plenty of free tables. We were told that they don't take bookings, although my partner had rung a few weeks before to reserve a table, so that was a bit odd. Not an issue when quiet, but something to bear in mind if you plan to go on a busy Friday/Saturday evening,Overall it was very good and we would certainly go back.

I've never been impressed with the sound quality at this venue, but last night's Afro Celt gig was a new low. The sound system totally failed to project into the hall and had no presence. It's flat and lacks any dimension. You'd need to be right in front of the stage to feel any sense of immersion. Even then, the overall quality is low. To make matters worse, the sound engineering was shocking, with fiddles, pipes, flute, whistle so far bant in the mix that they could barely be heard at times. A really unprofessional event that left me feeling like I'd been ripped off. I'd be really reluctant to see a band here again. Frome deserves better.
