After a warm welcome from the friendly barista, we were choosing our drinks from the menu. We asked the difference between a few of them and the barista kindly offered to make mini versions, tasters, of three different drinks for us to try! I've never been offered that anywhere else before and I really appreciated the extra effort he went to in helping us choose something we would like. We've been here before and intend to come back again.

This is one of those fabulous little coffee shops that you both do and don’t want to tell the world about. The issue being that if you do tell the world it might be too busy next time you visit! Wandering down the Royal Mile and Canongate we spotted this little coffee shop on St Mary’s St and decided to pop in. Really good coffee, a great selection of cakes and sandwiches, friendly service. Features on many 'Top 10/15/etc' lists for coffee and brunch in Edinburgh. Last place we stopped before getting the train home. Disappointing. Flat White was average and lacked any character or any distinguishable flavour from the coffee (yes i know the milk hides it but geez). Worse was the almond croissant which looked fantastic all dressed up with icing and dusted with icing sugar but was literally a dense dry bread inside, kind of like a very stale iced bun in texture. I must say that the service was good, menu for drinks and cake/snack options at the counter looked good and offered artisan sweet and savoury products including vegan and gluten free. Since we didn't order much i can't comment on these other than to say they looked nice. There are so many great places in Edinburgh that i'd have to suggest looking elsewhere for a better coffee and certainly of you want a croissant...

I just couldn't stand the idea of going into that american coffee chain when the smaller coffee shops almost always offer better quality, so I set my sights on Procaffeination (which I had spotted a few days earlier). The capuccino was great, and it was a temperature that didn't burn the whole inside of my mouth, which far too many coffee shops don't seem to be able to pull off. My girlfriend has the hot chocolate and it tasted really nice as well! Procaffeination is a very small attractive cafe with an interesting selection of drinks and snacks. I felt a bit weird though when I asked the staff how they make their frappe and they just looked at me really strangely, in a rude way. Its basically my country's national drink and even though they make it in a blender I still decided to try it. It was more like a milkshake than an actual frappe but I still enjoyed it. Also I ordered the vegetable soup but one of the waitresses forgot about it and twenty minutes later I had to remind her. The soup was watery and tasteless. The Edinburgh indy coffee scene is tremendously vibrant. We, the customers, are winners. No-one who values their coffee needs to go to Starbucks. Except when the indy coffee shop didn't open on time, or at all, or ran out of a vital ingredient or staff. Such is the situation at Procaff - it seems to be hopelessly disorganised. I've bought coffee here once or twice and changed my mind on several occasions due to one of the reasons given above. I was even forced to go to the dreadful Starbucks for breakfast on October because it was, well, "open" and "stocked" and that helped.
