Preto in Colchester

Hadn’t been in years. Average welcome. Sat at rear of restaurant only because we wanted to be out of the bright lights and away from the service area. We had two drinks and left because the smell of drains from the toilet area was overpowering. There’s got to be issues to sort here.

A real treat for meat lovers. Fresh, well cooked and great variety of cuts. The buffet was well stocked and a fairly good choice.

I would like to start by saying the food was excellent as were most of the staff and in particular JJ. However, the evening didn't start well. We were early and the place wasn't busy and we were sat opposite the disabled toilet - the door leading to the toilets was open so when the toilet door was opened, the toilet and the smell were very much on display. We asked if we could be moved and we were told no ... we then asked for the manager. JJ (not sure if he was the manager) asked what the problem was and we told him - and he said yes of course - and all was good. Interestingly another couple asked later and were moved straight away with no issue. Whose ever authority the first chap was working under really needs to improve their customer service. We also struggled to get our drinks order which took ages and we were eating way before we were drinking ... not the right way round. Anyway on the whole it was a good fun evening which would have been great had it not been for our little toilet door incident that was handled badly.

Visited in a group of four. Food was excellent as were staff. No problem being served regularly and had plenty to eat (and we ate a lot). Plenty of salad and rice etc if that's what you want. We'll definitely visit again.

was a last minuet decision to come to Preto and have mixed feelings about the experience . my boyfriend had been before but a long time ago and it was my first time . The guy serving us was a little bit rude to my partner I didn't feel like he wanted to be there or serve us. The waitress took our drinks order almost all of what we wanted was out of stock . The meat itself we loved the guy that brought that around was pleasant and we enjoyed that service . We was disappointed with the salad selection we didn't feel like there was actually much to choose from , however what we did have was pleasant . At the end we settled the bill but this is where I do feel the waiter was rude to my partner. He couldn't actually see the screen on the machine and the waiters response to partner was are you gonna pay then and just stood there holding the card machine. I'm sorry but firstly if he cant see the screen how does he know what he is paying for and secondly don't be rude we are the customers . This just left a sour taste to the evening and unsure if we would want to return .

Hardly any salad to choose from, meat was slow to come out and wasn't great, expensive for what you get and to top it off ordered a bottle of new Zealand wine for 30 which when arrived in ice bucket was a cheap bottle of spanish wine! I questioned it and was told yes we do that if we don't have what you asked for!!!!!

Really bad food , salad bar nothing like photo, meat dry and over seasoned. Place feels like a drop in cafe and needs deep clean

Very poor , like a canteen. Manageress needs to crack a smile. Floor ripped, rest of decor like a youth club. Salad bar / buffet awful. 2 of steaks ok rest of meat horrible , worse chicken ever had and pork just mush.

Well, don’t go here if you expect the salads, sides etc to look like those posted on here. Very lack lustre, boring average chopped lettuce, sliced cucumber and tomatoes with the addition of a sourkraute and a pasta. Hot sides again very boring, ‘roast potatoes’ swimming in oil, chips which were cold, rice bland and a couple of dishes with beans. The steaks that were served were tasty, albeit a tad salty, and quite tender. Lamb was ok, eel the very thin slice we got. Sausages tasty. Chicken thighs were ish, pork was tasteless even though it smelt lovely, it was very underwhelming. The chaps doing the rounds with the meats were pleasant enough, as were the ladies who were clearing plates. The lady who I presume was the manager/supervisor was not welcoming, looked like she didn’t want to be there and not even a hello or goodbye. No atmosphere, lights as bright as so no ambience, tables were dirty canteen style. Not the nicest place and expensive for what it is, had better in other Brazilian BBQ establishments.

O.M.G food was amazing the meat was tender and full of flavour. Fantastic choice at the buffet. If you have room for dessert I can recommend the passion fruit. The staff were attentive and very friendly. I would definitely recommend a meal here.

We have visited here several times and the food is consistently excellent. Very flavourful and well cooked cuts of meat. The complimentary buffet of side dishes and salads also compliments very well. However, there are some criticisms. You need to visit at an off peak time or if this isn't achievable, insist on having a downstairs table. On our last visit we were seated upstairs and were served ribs or plain steak with no variation. We had to ask repeatedly before any different options were brought upstairs. It felt as though there was little to no communication between service staff or that the other meats advertised were 'running out' as the downstairs tables were being prioritised. One member of our party also wanted plain fries, which were available at the buffet, except they weren't because as soon as a tray was brought out to replenish it was emptied almost instantly. These definitely needed a quicker turnover or more volume cooked. The service charge is also automatically applied to your bill at a pre determined rate. This is probably more opinion than a gripe but we believe that the customer should reserve the right to determine the amount of tip, especially when you have been seen to by a variety of staff with little consistency. This won't stop us visiting again, as the food is very good. However, we will probably be sticking to quieter lunch time services from now on.

Visited and it was very busy. Staff kept the salad bar topped up and clean the entire time we were there. Meats were all succulent and a fair variety. The carving guys did walk straight past us a few times as there was 2 large groups at one end who would devour an entire skewer and a smaller group party the other end who always wanted at least 3 slices each of everything which meant not enough meat for others as they had to go back for more cooking. The salad bar had a fair variety. Only thing that was slightly off was the bread as it was dried out, but that happens when you place it next to heated section. Would return if in the area.

I came in to this restaurant, told them could we have a table just for some drinks, they said that was absolutely fine and sat us down at a table. Shortly after sitting us down when we had some time to decide on the drinks we wanted to order, a waitress with brown hair in a pony tail told us that we have to leave as they wound rather give the table to others that wanted to order food, a horrible experience, they were blunt and rude and simply told us to leave so they could give a table to someone who they presumed would make them more money.

We had visited before and it had been a pleasant meal, although fairly expensive. However as a treat we thought we’d try this again. It was early evening and we hadn’t booked a table but there looked to be several tables available. However the woman front of house was extremely rude (as others have mentioned here) and seemed highly irritated when we asked for a table. She then proceeded to show us to a table upstairs, in an area which can only be described as a staff room. No one else was seated upstairs, there was no music and a completely empty bar. In the corner were several coats and bags dumped on tables. We immediately left. With two young children it was clearly ludicrous to think they could manage the steep stairs with plates of food from a downstairs buffet (I think as an adult I would have struggled) and for the price I wasn’t going to pay to sit on an empty spare room. Needless to say we won’t be bothering to try to return again!

Visited this restaurant for a spot of LUNCH today. Just not worth the money ! Poor Service - Poor cuts of overcooked cheap meat - 12.5% Service Charge. Makes a Pint of Draught Beer - over £ 7.80 and HALF a Pint just under £ 4.50

Came here for the 241 Wednesday offer and left full! A good selection of meat and buffet options. Food was cooked well and had good flavour. Service was shocking. The women waitressing and front of house were inattentive. Didn’t seem to care when customers had arrived and took little to no interest in taking drinks orders. Meat man was good who kept coming round to provide more food though. Would I return? No. At full price this is simply not worth it. 12.5% service charge put on every bill is cheeky. You won’t leave hungry but don’t come expecting more that a buffet similar to a help yourself all you can eat.

Chose this as it was something outside my comfort zone. What a surprise and how epically fabulous. They know there meat! Everything was tasty, really tasty. I'm so full still the following morning! I suggest not eating all day before going. There's so much to try you won't want to miss out. Amazing

Visited Preto Saturday 11th March 2023. Restaurant was full and buzzing. We were promptly greeted and seated. Salad bar and hot side food bar was spot on. Meat kept flowing all the time. Food was hot, plentiful, and excellent quality. Service was spot on. Came away ready to burst.

The food was amazing and the service extremely friendly. The meat skewers were constantly bought to the table, all of which was cooked to perfection and a suitable range for all tastes. So glad we decided to have a dessert as the Cheesecake we had was superb. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience at Colchester. Can’t wait to see you all again soon.

After having visited other Preto restaurants in London we decided to give Colchester preto a go as we were in the area. We arrived at 12.30, half hour after the advertised opening time, to find the resteraunt locked. A member of staff eventually came to the door and told us they weren't opening until 14.30 due to building works. We decided to wait and come back then. So we headed back at 15.00 and the staff were in the process of opening. The food was the great quality we had come to expect from Preto however the service was dire. Staff seemed more interested in putting up Xmas decorations than serving clients. We asked the male waiter twice for a portion of chips that has never arrived. At one point I attempted to gain the female waitresses attention but again Xmas decorations seemed to take precedence. I had to walk down the resteraunt to the bar after she walked away to find her and the other two staff chatting by the bar. The meat serving gentleman was attentive and the only saving grace of our visit. I wanted to change our babies nappy and again had to find staff to unlock the toilet. The disabled toilet was broken and wouldn't flush. My wife asked the male waiter for the bill and he replied yes however then carried on putting on Xmas lights... which were trailing along the floor presenting a significant trip hazard. Such a shame that this experience has really marred our opinion of preto

I would love to put zero stars. Do not appreciate being fat shamed by the male staff. Or because a herd of customers come in the manager allows them to keep their dog in the restaurant. Will never ever be back and I will plaster...

We chose preto to celebrate someone's birthday but unfortunately we were sadly let down. 12 of us ordered the buffet to start with. They did not have all the meat that showed in the menu and didn't even tell us which that didn't bothered us much however the the meat we had was amazing and the chef working the meat was lovely and very helpful (Lucca), the front of house staff seemed like they didn't want work. We ordered a sangria and probably was one of the worse sangria I have ever had in my entire life so I took it back and asked at the bar if that was sangria and the bar manager replied saying he doesn't know how to make It .In the first place he should have said he didn't know how to make sangria so we wouldn't order one. To end with we asked the staff to bring the birthday cake which they did once we sang the birthday song we asked kindly if we could get some cutlery and some plates so we could cut and eat the cake and the bar manager refused and said that they are closing. We ended up to put the cake back in the box and take it back home where we all eat it .I found that very unprofessional and very disrespectful .I would not recommend it to none of my friends

The meat was dry over cooked and inedible and the side dishes were not much better, not worth the price!

Great service. Fresh salads and very tasty well cooked meat served and sliced at your table. 6 meats and lots of sides for £13.95. We declined the last meat as all 4 os us were full. Great value a must visit

Food was quite nice but the restaurant was very grubby which was off putting. The sides weren’t piping hot when served because they came down in a dumb waiter and then had to sit and wait to be collected.

We recently went to Preto for a birthday meal. The service was excellent and the food was amazing, but after we finished our meal we were brought over desserts and asked what we wanted. We were not told that this would incur an extra charge, so we all had dessert. When the bill came, we had the eat out to help out discount, but a £20 service charge, which should be optional. I questioned this and was told we had to pay the service charge if we wanted the discount. I then explained that it was not disclosed that we had to pay for desserts (at £5.50 each), and he rudely said 'all of our staff are trained to tell you' in which I replied, 'he didn't so they're obviously not trained very well'. We were given 10% off of the bill. Very good food, but beware of additional fees that are not specified when making a booking or being seated, and £5.50 for a tiny bit of chocolate mousse.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! This was my 4th visit to Preto Colchester and I have to say it was a bit of a culture shock to not have access to the unlimited side / salad bar (due to covid they now serve your selected sides to you on a plate - they can't allow people to help themselves due to the risk of bacteria spread which is understandable but if you want a 2nd plate all you need to do is ask!) but this place has never let me down and they weren't going to start tonight! We (table of 7) were out for our Mum's 60th birthday and seeing as she's a steak loving celiac (and we're greedy pigs!)decided Preto was the place to feast! I had previously called the restaurant to check the menu was Gluten-free friendly and was assured that the meat was fine but we'd need to check the side dishes on the night. Danielle was our hostess and she was faced with a multitude of questions. Which she was more than happy to answer and went to the kitchen twice to check what was and wasn't safe to eat! I asked about my favourite side dish - the little bread balls filled with cheese and she said due to covid and having to offer a reduced menu they were unfortunately unavailable at the moment, I made a joke about only having visited the restaurant to eat them and she went off to gather our drinks order. When she came back she told me she'd asked the chef and they were happy to cook some up especially for our table! We had 7 mini buckets filled with piping hot stretchy soft balls of deliciousness in total! The guys with the giant meat sticks were faultless too! More than happy to cut my brother the rarer meat from the middle and if there was something one of us fancied some more of all we had to do was ask and a few moments later there he is with exactly what we asked for! Absolutely amazing time was had by all. Everyone was completely fit to burst by the end!Now the "service charge" is optional. I personally get it removed add £5 to it and give it to the staff as a tip as they LITERALLY bring anything and everything you need to your table. When I came for my birthday last year they even gave us all a free shot of this delicious fruity spirit!Thank you Preto! See you soon!I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO EVERYONE!

Have visited this restaurant on numerous occasions and it has been very nice. .booked a table for this evening at 6pm we were back home by 7pm . The service we got was appalling, the wrong food was brought to us and half of what we ordered didn’t arrive at all. We were ignored for 15 minutes before someone acknowledged us. . The worst thing was picking up the meat tongs to find the had meat on them already . On a normal visit we would spend an hour an half in the restaurant but left after 40 minutes. My husband has just made a sandwich as he wasn’t satisfied from his meal . Won’t be visiting again

Terrible! Do not go here until this covid thing is over. After arriving we sat down and our VERY restricted buffet choices were bought to the table we sat for about 15 minutes until we had to ask for cutlery so we could actually eat it. They then proceeded to bring out dry over cooked inedible meat, palming us off with cheap rubbish chicken. But every now and a again some nice meat would come out, were we allowed any? No? A tiny slice of burnt crust and walks away, ignoring my wife multiple times giving her none. Then the buffet food became hilarious too, ticked lots of boxes, received 2 slices of cucumber. Walked out without paying....still hungry. Usually leave satisfied and full. This place needs to employ competent staff or stay closed!

First time here. Easy to understand menu. It's a buffet usually and meat is brought to you.However they changed it due to Pandemic and now you choose the salad you want, tick it off list and they bring it to you.Meat comes continually.. Wasn't sure on one pork, think we got first slice and it was fat.My favourite meat was the sirloin.Overall recommend.

Disregarding Boris Johnsons request to not visit restaurants we had a team Meal out from work at Preto...so glad we did!What a meat fest! Such a large variety of meats plus a great buffet of sides salads rice etc to accompany the meat! A thoroughly tasty night out with great value for money...even though the wine was a bit pricey!Will be going again..sorry Boris!

The all in option is great! There are so many options to have and they certainly do not hold back, bucket of beer for 10 gets you 4 bottles which is good value.

We choose to have the all included ,all you can eat meat BBQ. Quite good ,chicken and one beef tasty, but sausages and other type of beef slaggy and tasteless ,but all around fare price fare service.

We decided to opt for the all you can eat, meat fest (don’t think it’s called that) it did not disappoint! A huge selection of salads and sides, which were replenished every 15 minutes. The meat coming round was delicious, fresh and perfectly cooked. The “meatadores “ were very skilled in their craft. Loved the green/red card system, worked perfectly! All in all a fab and fun night out. Wish there was one in Tunbridge Wells, my kids would have loved it!

I visited this restaurant for the first time at the weekend and thought the food was very good with a good salad selection and tasty meats brought to the table by cheerful waiting staff. The downside is the look and feel of the interior. This is not somewhere you would bring someone for a special occasion and it feels like they're missing a trick. If they could just make the tables and chairs a bit less canteen they would get more punters in. Nando's seem to do it better and are cheaper. I will be back but only for a casual lunch if I'm particularly hungry!

I thought this was good. Always wary of salad buffets due to the iffy hand hygiene in general. Staff were nice and the meats were good, though being near the end of the 'run' our cuts tended to be a lot more rare than medium. Was interesting to go for the experience, but that's that.

A group of four of us visited on the 2 for 1 deal. On arrival it was clear the buffet element has reduced in size by 50%, less choice, the rice and pasta on offer were dry as they had been hanging around so long. However, some items that were previously on the buffet now are added as chargeable extra’s on the menu. The service was on par with previous visits, servers were attentive. The meat for me was perfect however my partner found some of the meat to “rare” for her.

Had such a great experience at this restaurant, lovely food, unlimited meat that is all so yummy and juicy and full of flavour, cooked to perfection From steak, to ribs, to pork, to gammon and chorizo sausages literally no end to the crazy amount of selection. Unless you go at lunch as its cheaper which means less available! All delivered out to you on a massive metal skewer, hot and sliced in front of your eyes onto your plate. Salad bar is unlimited too and the pasta was yummy and salad all fresh.Definitely be coming again

I have been to Brazil many times for work. It was wonderful to experience an authentic Brazilian restaurant in Colchester. Buffet selection, plentiful and the meat coming to the table on spits to be carved were succulent and mouth watering. Not for vegans!!!

Myself and my family had an early dinner here and have all been ill as a result. This is the only thing we have all eaten together today so I know it’s come from here.

After a mix up with a groupon voucher, we had a great family meal. As always meat was cooked to perfection, with endless supply by the waiter's.

Being a regular Rios fan which offer very similar in Ipswich my wife and I had been thinking for a while about giving Preto Colchester a go. I found a groupon voucher on the Friday evening which saved us about £10-12. The voucher states you must wait 24 hours before booking a table.

I went there once with my friends and I cannot fault the food. The meats and the rest of the food you could get from the salad bar, sides and all were very tasty and we had a lovely time, but our jaws dropped when we had to pay. First, they don't accept your Groupon voucher unless you have booked a table beforehand and specified that you are using a Groupon voucher. We were not aware of this. This would have been fine, but the drinks are very expensive (which again we hadn't realised) and the service charge is ridiculous. I understand you have to pay your waiters for carving up the meat and serving you but nowhere is it mentioned that there is a service charge which ups your bill a lot.

Went for lunch - and it's only good value if you eat meat - the vegetarian option/salad is limited. Much of the meat was near raw, even the supposedly well-done servings were oozing. Wouldn't go back - felt like eating like a caveman.

Lots of freshly cooked meats to enjoy, which are carved at your table. A wide array of accompanyments to add. Just keep the green tag on display and they will keep bringing on more food. If you want a pause, turn thr red side up.

The meal was lovely - no complaints. Great salad bar and server regularly came round with the various meats. Perfect. However, the drink prices are extortionate, which added to the fact that a service charge is automatically added to your bill and isn't discretionary is a damn right cheek. Even though we were lucky enough to have a voucher for one of our meals, the bill was still very expensive and we're sorry to say that we didn't feel the food was worth even the reduced amount we paid. We felt a bit cheated in all honesty and won't be returning as the experience wasn't that great for the price.

Lunch Monday to Friday best value for the buffet so fresh! Sirloin served at the table just how we like it rare, superb selction of meats the choice is yours! Atmosphere like being in Brazil authentic music in the background.

My husband and children decided they’d like to treat me for Mothering Sunday, we were all looking forward to it as we eat in RIO’s a lot in Ipswich which is more or less the same.

We visited for lunch today and the service and the food was fantastic there was a great selection of meats including sausages, sirloin, chicken, lamb kebab, chicken kebab, gammon, garlic steak, pork ribs plus the extensive buffet wait 3 stews lasagna and crispy chicken . The food was all hot and well presented and the meats served in generous slices. The dessert tray is like something from the 80's a printed menu would be more appealing as the actual desserts are far nice than the examples. And automatically adding 12.5% service may not appeal to some although the service we had was excellent so I didn't mind paying it.

Excellent meal. Food was fantastic. Great value for money. Staff were brilliant. I would definitely recommend and will certainly be going back soon

Went out with friends last night to Pretos and cant help but feel very ripped off. What made it worse was the fact that our friends treated us.

Fantastic Salad Bar / Buffet great value / Fresh and varied / friendly staff / Certainly worth a visit when the opportunity arises, this is a regular event full five stars 🌟

A lovely buffet with brilliant selection of meats brought to the table until we could eat no more. Coffee and a caramel cheesecake followed by Brazilian rum with passion fruit as a complementary drink after paying the bill completed a brilliant dining experience

Very nice greeting explained how it all works you go up and help your self to buffet and then the chefs come round with freshly cooked meats on screwers sliced at the table. Fantastic buffet could have eaten well just from there from stew to salad, the meat was cooked perfectly. Good selection of deserts and again very well done. The Brazilian draft beer was good complement with the food. All the staff were pleasant friendly the whole evening was a wonderful experience a taste of Brazil. This is one to try.

Visited this place as part of a Groupon deal and wow it was definitely value for money. A delight for this meat eater... steak slices, chicken skewers, gammon and chorizo sausages. Buffet offered nice sides and the staff were very friendly too. Well worth the visit.

Visited with friends of a lunchtime..it is half price at lunchtimes..we had a great selection of food..nice friendly service..really was great value for money..made a nice change from normal dinning..

Lovely staff. Very helpful. Excellent Argentinian food and beautiful steak and chicken etc. and plenty of it. I prefer to go at lunchtime as it is half price. I went with my grandchildren last time, the youngest of whom is 9 and they all thoroughly enjoyed it. There were 12 of us and the staff put a couple of tables together so that we could all be together. The one slight downside is the price of drinks but they are happy to bring you a jug of tapwater which I prefer anyway. A great meal out and a jolly time had by all.

We have been coming to this restaurant as a family since it opened. We have always loved the food and the staff have always been helpful. Last night when we went as a family of 4 before fireworks I noticed our bill was just shy of £100! When I looked closer I realised I had been charged 12.5% service charge and bill was actually £88. The guy behind counter said that it was to “help them out” as we had received good service! Well actually there was considerably less variety of meat than we have had in the past, I couldn’t actually eat some of the steak as it was so tough plus they ran out of things on cold buffet and didn’t replace it (this is a regular thing now). He begrudgingly told me SERVICE CHARGE IS OPTIONAL!! So I told him to remove it and gave him a £5 tip. It was such an uncomfortable moment and for that reason I’m going to be very reluctant to return.

Just come back after having a wonderful meal with great food really friendly staff and absolutely full to bursting point 😳😳 Won’t be too long before we go back and thoroughly recommend this place to anyone who hasn’t tried it yet 😃😃😃

I visited here recently with my family and being a bit of a carnivore it looked like the perfect experience, succulent meats carved at the table by a Passador (the man who prepares the meat) there was a table of serve yourself fresh salads and dips what more could you want I hear you ask?

As a wheelchair user I was helped greatly getting in and out, the staff are always incredibly helpful and friendly. And the food is to die for! Every time I go the food seems to get better.

For a Brazilian living in England the meats were good. And the service was excellent. Totally recommend it.

An incredible place to eat and explore a different culture of meats, never been before well priced the food quality was outstanding as they bring the meat out to you until you tell them to stop. Definitely recommend it, happily go back again.

do go hungry to this restaurant it is a mega feast of unlimited meats red to stop being served more suculant well cooked meat lamb , beef chicken and green to keep going 3 time back here and still never dissapointing good friendly service great atmosphere

We have dine last week there and the food was amazing, have visited other pretos and this one we loved the decoration, food was very fresh, meats were great selection, we like the beef a rare cooked, we loved it.
