Porters Bar And Grill in Mid Devon

We really high hopes for a good local restaurant but unfortunately we had a terrible experience. Service was awful - one waitress serving on a bank holiday weekend (despite the fact we had seen other staff wondering around). When we arrived there were only 2 other tables yet it took forever to even get our drinks or have our food order taken. When the food arrived (nearly an hour later) the order was all wrong (the waitress never bothered to check our order back and just seemed to write down whatever she wanted). First issue was she gave our burgers the wrong way round but told us they were correct and it was hard for us to tell the difference (especially as things were missing that we were expecting to be in as per the menu). The kitchen staff should have made it clear to the servers which was which especially for any allergies or intolerances! So half way through tucking into our burgers we realised we had the wrong ones. My burger was completely dry (and over cooked) and no sauce was added that I asked for. We had asked for Parmesan and truffle oil flavoured chips and they came with just Parmesan. We told the waitress what we had actually ordered (as soon as the food arrived) and there was no apology or offer to rectify it, so we simply asked for some truffle oil to drizzle over. The waitress was so rude and said she wasn’t sure because the kitchen was so busy (we just asked for a pot of oil not even new chips like we deserved) in quite a harsh tone so I proceeded to tell her it is what we ordered and the waitress never read the order back to check and we’ve had pretty awful service tonight. Her response was to bite back and say it wasn’t her fault and she made a bit of a scene to which we felt embarrassed and uncomfortable. It was awful, I have never been treated like that. What happened to the customer is always right?! Regardless of which individual staff member’s fault it was, it wasn’t ours and they didn’t seem to see that! And by this point it has ruined our night. No apology, no offer to sort out the problems which had occurred through staff incompetence, no attempt to make our night any better. From then on no one spoke to us or checked how anything was. I understand the waitresses shouldn’t have to deal with complaints but why wouldn’t the manager address us? I am just shocked that we got treated like this in a independent restaurant that thrives off customer satisfaction. And to top it off they charged us for the things they never even provided - absolutely awful! Not to mention we booked a table and were shoved in a corner behind a wall and the place was dirty and extremely tired looking for a new restaurant! Won’t be returning again and the food was not even worth ordering a takeaway! I felt so unwell after from how greasy it was. Waste of money! But even worse service and experience!!!

We had a delivery tonight from porters and the food was fantastic. Best Mac n cheese and halloumi fries we’ve had in years! The quality of the food was fabulous, the delivery was on time as expected and very polite. Cant wait to order from here again! Best takeaway in cullompton by far!

Unfortunately the produce was cheap and bad quality and simply heated to a luke warm temperature. My breakfast was salty and so the taste was over powered by this. The mushrooms in the breakfast were sour, the bacon was pleasant but undercooked and the sausages were stone cold. It was awful. The eggs we were served were so pale in colour and undercooked and I can only assume the Hollandaise sauce was not home made. After a disappointing meal I used the facilities and this just topped it for me. The toilet was stained brown, the bins were over flowing with rubbish and there was celotape holding up the wallpaper. It was nothing short of disgusting. The staff we met were friendly and helpful but felt they were quite new to the job and so felt we couldn’t voice our opinion, also it was painfully quiet with other guests arriving and we didn’t want to cause a scene. When asked if our meal was good we said “Um it was ok I guess” the response to this was great good to hear it! Unfortunately as much as we wanted this local business to wow us as we have seen good things about it it was something I never wish to experience again.

An absolutely fantastic lunch at Porters. Mac cheese (with pigs in blankets 😮 🤩) and ultimate burger. Food and service were exceptional. Great atmosphere. Highly recommended to anyone that hasn’t visited yet! The menu has so much to choose from that you can keep visiting and visiting! Highly recommended! 😀

We went to Porters for my birthday. Lovely food and great cocktails. Staff very pleasant. Would definitely recommend. Will be going back soon.

I felt I needed to leave a review as the food really was delicious! Although I only had a chicken burger, it was genuinely one of the nicest ones I have ever had. The staff were nice and the service quick. The batter on the onion rings was surprisingly good to - possibly tempura batter. I think I’ll go for a non burger option next time to test the chefs!

Having heard and read good things and given that it's local we thought we'd give it a go, they stated they offered gluten free choices for hubby so that sold it for us. The staff were lovely, it was busy but didn't feel crowded despite it being a small venue, very tastefully decorated and bright if a bit warm. The menu was pretty standard but we all found what we wanted although the GF choice was limited. Hubby's burger ,which came in a GF bun was served with a deep fried battered pig in blanket and his dessert of GF brownie came with ice cream on a biscuit base....lessons are needed to understand just exactly what Gluten Free means..... The rest of us enjoyed our food although a bit too much batter on the fish making it difficult to eat. The toilets need some TLC, it felt a bit grubby and there was water on the floor and there is only one for both male and female , I did like the individual hand towels though that was a nice touch. We did enjoy it but with some tweaks it could be better especially for those with dietary needs, please eduate your chefs

So I have to start by saying I don’t understand some of the reviews on here with all other reviews on social media being so good?! This wasn’t my first time and definitely won’t be my last! Last evening we booked ‘The Vault’ for our 5 year olds birthday meal. What a great function/party tomorrow! Yet again the food for everyone was spot on, my girls had the hotdog & chips and the lasagna with garlic bread and totally loved it, at £5.95 they are amazing and no cheap kids version it’s just the adult quality food in smaller portion! Was great to see some new dishes tried by my family, the pulled pork burger brought moans of delight while being eaten 😂 around the rest of the table we had Hunters Chicken, couldn’t believe how “balanced the flavours were” then Pork Chops “how on earth do they cook it and keep it so tender and moist” Lasagna which Nanny didn’t realise could taste so good, and I had to have the competition wining ‘Jelly Burger’ which was as perfect as always (still LOVE that chilli hit)! When it comes to the deserts, if I start reviewing them I’ll run out of words to describe how good they were! Sticky Toffee Pudding with a hint of ginger I think that just knocks its out of this world! Homemade cheesecake, mixed berry crumble with exactly the right mix of sweet and tart, and a good traditional Banana Split that had the partner moaning in delight again 😳😂 They were packed tonight and have new staff, no easy task for them, but they were attentive, efficient and did a great job. My family cannot recommend enough!

We booked a table for four and were allocated our table. Not given much chance to review the menu before being asked for our order. There was an excellent selection and food was good all except the chicken skewers starter which was tough and did not taste like described. This place has potential but there were so many issues e.g. flies which were worse than being in Spain, cutlery designed for children, clearing the table whilst people still eating, allowing dogs in of which there were quite a few in a small space. The lighting was bright and ambience poor that we all felt uncomfortable and couldn’t wait to get out of the place. Such a shame!

We decided to go for a last minute meal, so I checked the opening times online and rang for a table around 7pm. I asked for a table for two just after 8pm and the lady said as they weren't very busy that evening could we come earlier and I said no due to my husband being in an appointment until then; she said she needed to check, but was begrudging when agreeing to let us have the booking. We arrived and were promptly served, ordered our starters which were quick to arrive and were enjoyable, we shared the calamari and the meat platter. Unfortunately the meal was totally let down by the mains. I had a classic burger, which the burger was unlikely in my opinion to be 6oz as I often struggle to finish a 6oz burger, the salad it came with was two slices of tomato and two lettuce leaves and the lettuce was brown all around the edges. There were no gherkins as stated on the menu. My husband had the macaroni cheese, which stated it would be bacon topped with pigs in blankets and there was no bacon on top at all. There were two not three pigs in blankets (the waitress confirmed there should have been three) and the "garlic bread bites" was a piece of garlic ciabatta that if dropped on the floor, I'd have worried for the floor more than the bread. It was burnt on the bottom and rock hard, completely inedible. We gave this feedback to the waitress and she gave us a discount but overall it was not a pleasant experience. It's a real shame as we've heard some great things about it but it just wasn't what we had hoped for.

The place looks clean and we were able to hand sanitise, asked to wear masks to table and seated in a nice area. The buzzing fly who came with us not Not only did it constantly ‘bug’ us but no attempts to get rid of it for us. The waitress was polite but hovered for our order even when we placed the drinks to give us time to look at the menu. I asked for more time and she got the drinks and came back. The waitress was able to recommend a cider which was lovely What was good Starters were large. Prawn cocktail was in a Bloody Mary sauce. It tasted like normal dressing. Lots of lettuce and avocado and sauce. Prawns slightly hard but it did taste nice. Came with thin bread which unsure if it was garlic flavour or not. Slightly off putting was the lettuce garnish which was going brown Chicken skewers with rice noodles. Spicy, chicken was liked by my partner. I felt there was no stickiness or honey flavour. We swapped meals in the end as he enjoyed it more. So unable to judge as he felt it was ok. What was poor I had CFC burger. Chips were really nice. This was about it. Chicken flavourless, had a funny fish taste and where the southern fried was, I have no idea. Even the fly avoided it. It was on a bed of coleslaw which was horrible. Purple, leaking all over bun which was sodden so unable to pick up. It was unpleasant in taste and look. Steak with peppercorn. Had to ask for more sauce as even the fly would have struggled with small size. Chips were ok. Mushroom was wet We had side dishes. Onion rings with cider batter No cider flavour No onion flavour Not even batter flavour Literally no taste Prawns in tempura batter with sweet chilli sauce Wet is how I would describe them. At the end of the meal. No one checked to see if we were enjoying the food. I asked for the bill and commented that chicken tasted like fish. As the waitress flapped the fly away she said she would tell the kitchen as another customer had also said the same thing. No comments back or apology just the bill presented. I said I felt I was not happy to pay for my meal of chicken burger and to her credit she took £10 off A real shame. The place needs to look at the quality of food as it’s a lovely building and pleasing to sit in. I have a new friend in the fly but that’s all I recommend Ok

Went for lunch with friends and had a very relaxed and 'covid safe' experience. Excellent food which was well cooked, very tasty and good value for money. The staff were attentive without making us feel rushed. Will certainly return and would recommend.

What a great place. Five of us had lunch here as we wanted to try the new venue. It’s lovely. We were welcomed into the bright, smart and spacious restaurant and sat on the lovely comfy sofa by the bar before our meal. It’s been very tastefully renovated and has a modern Bistro feel. We all had a different meal - fish, pork and veggie burgers; fish and chips; and the steak special. We were all very pleased with the food which was well cooked and presented, tasty, hot and a generous size. The service was excellent throughout our lunch. The staff were attentive but allowed us to take our time and feel relaxed. The place is nice and clean and feels Covid safe with good social distancing. All in all a very good lunchtime experience and we’ll certainly be back.

Had a great meal with family and friends with amazing food served in a great atmosphere. Plenty of choice and while I had one of the best burgers I’ve ever tried my wife had sea bass which was cooked to perfection. This restaurant is a great little find and with good service and food and will be a regular destination I can recommend to all.
