Popeye's in Cheltenham

Arrived near closing time i think was owner stood by door was uninterested in making any food, there was food in display, had been recommended by a friend who used to go there years ago with his father , regret wasting fuel to go there. Guess as i was in work cloths he didnt think i was a reviewer unfortunately for him. Dowt ill ever go back...

Best fish and chips in the south west no doubt. The haddock is freshly battered and u gotta be quick cuz they run out very quickly. I’ve been waiting months to try but today was my lucky day. Good prices aswell 6.30 for a whole haddock. Will be back every time I pass it

I’m not sure why this is named Popeye’s and advertising southern fried chicken as if it’s the American franchise but this is horrible. It’s sad that alot of UK restaurants do that and it’s so off putting.

Great place. Owner is a real Saint. Food is second to none. Chips are always crispy with plenty flavour. I love a fish cake from here. Best around.

Excellent fish and chips and nice service from the young women. My only criticism would be to provide better quality tartare sauce.

I was a regular customer, will now avoid. Apparently the “restaurant menu” is different - asked to move on when bought fish and chips and sat down(raining) in chippy eating in train station - shame as the scran is good not the first time I’ve heard owner be rude to customers such a shame as great food. No one had booked the table no one in chippy shame…

Popped in with the family after we left the nearby train station. Friendly staff and quick service and good sized portions.

Think it may have closed down. Went there on a Thursday evening but it was shut despite Google saying it was open.

Tried this place for the first time. It was easy to park outside and nip in on my crutches. Service was quite quick.

Very good fish and chips. Cooked fresh and worth the wait. Young serving staff, a boy and a girl, were polite and friendly. When the boss appeared, the mood changed. He was quite abrupt and talked down to them. It was awkward as a customer to listen to it. Very patronising. It's a shame because he is clearly brilliant at cooking and knows his business inside out. Definitely recommend the food. Eat in available too.

DO NOT EAT THE CHICKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bought some fried chicken whilst passing through Cheltenham returning from work and spent the whole night throwing it up in the toilet, absolutely horrific will not be returning.

Just what you want before a long Train journey home after Cheltenham... nice food, good selection, and great service from the girls, nothing too much trouble for them...

As always, excellent food. We have been gping to this restaurant for well over 20 years and it's been - and is - very consistent.

A strange place, I'm not sure about it, I've been several times and can't figure out the opening times, seems to do more lunch time trade than evenings. The food has been good, nice size portions and well packaged to take home. Service is a bit hit and miss, though. The older chap who does the frying is quite unfriendly; the girls who usually serve seem OK. The atmosphere in there is just a bit iffy, not a place to hang around.

The young man behind the counter was very nice, friendly and efficient when completing my order. However, he was belittled and criticised incessantly by who I presume was the manager. The food was lovely, affordable and a reasonable price but the attitude and tension in the shop was uncomfortable.

I was here the other day and I have to say the chips were very tasty. Every star is for the lovely, polite young gentleman behind the counter who was very efficient. I found the older man with glasses to be confrontational when asking about burger dressing and in general oddly unfriendly to other staff. Confusing to be told the chairs and tables were part of a separate venue when serviced by the same staff. Also, could use a dusting, there was a brussel sprout on the pukka pie sign, which I can only assume didn't grow there but could have been a decor choice. Thank you to this young man.

This place can be excellent most of the time hence 4 stars. However you can be unlucky sometimes and get below standard chips. Fish on the whole is excellent and well priced. Normally a load of kids working behind counter, they do a good job. Manager/owner always seems to be stressing over something, not the friendliest man in the world but harmless. You can eat in here and they do table service. I have only ever done this once and it was good. The take away part of the business is by far the busiest bit. Curry sauce is always good here.

This was just what you'd expect from a chip shop, the staff were friendly and happy to help, the restaurant was clean enough. I didn't use the WC so I can't comment on that. If I did have a grumble, it would be about the portion size... I asked for a small, but it was HUGE and I couldn't finish my meal, tasty though it was.

Worst customer service in Cheltenham. The girl at front was unfriendly and unhelpful for the 2nd time in a row.

Called in here whilst waiting to catch a train at the station. I ordered Pie and Chips. The chips were lovely nice and crispy coating and lovely soft fluffy warm potato inside superbly cooked also the pie was nice and warm fresh not over cooked. Friendly welcome from the staff, reasonable pricing as well. If your in the area it’s worth a visit ideally located across the road from the train station.

Absolutely fantastic! I've just finished my beautifully cooked cod and chips, the batter was top notch, light as a feather, served with a good portion of crisp outside and fluffy inside chips, plus side salad. Top service from the proprietor and staff too. Highly recommend.

Popeye's do a delicious bacon, egg and chips. Naughty but nice! Today I also had apple pie and custard for dessert. Oh yes! Just want I needed.

Stumbled on this place by accident. Asked if they had any Cod (scarcer than you think these days) and was shown a line of huge battered fish. We ordered Cod, Chips & Mushy Peas twice. The portion was huge but more importantly everything was fresh, crispy, hot and tasted delicious. Go try the place!

Even though we turned up as they closed (sorry we hadn't realised!!) they still cooked us fresh cod and chips which tasted absolutely amazing!! Sorry we kept you a bit late, we will arrive earlier next time!
