I went with my partner for some food and to do the quiz with another couple. We were placed on one of the high tables which clearly had limited space when eating as I believe these tables are more suited to drinking. Our food arrived and was literally hanging off the edge of the table to the point where one of us had to place a plate on our knee. We asked nicely if we were ok to temporarily use another table to eat to which we were rudely refused and told other people manage. Eventually, after further conversations with extremely unhelpful staff, we were moved into the function room upstairs to eat. What a depressing space with no atmosphere. Only one staff member bothered to help us carry our food. The two girls (the ones who were rude and unhelpful) just left us to carry the rest by ourselves and struggle to open doors with our hands full. We then went back to our original table and completed the quiz. As the results were read out a clear dig was made at us due to one of the team names reading, “If you’re not happy with your f*****g table then bring your own”. What a joke of a place! I have never come across two staff members who are so unprofessional and unhelpful. Due to this I will not be returning and wouldn’t recommend anybody else to attend either. I have seen other reviews who also state the staff are unhelpful. Clearly a recurring theme. Complete waste of time and money!

I have been a regular customer to Pig & Pump for over 6 years and for the last 3 years despite moving to the other side of Sheffield still come to the pub for the quiz. I have always loved the food and the beer selection and it’s one of Chesterfields last few remaining places worth visiting. That being said after my last visit I won’t be going back. After booking a table for food and the quiz we were put on one of the high but very small bar area tables. As we ordered food we asked if we could use one of the other tables to eat our food from then move back to this table for the quiz. We were told several times by the somewhat unhelpful staff we couldn’t. The reason being that they had all been booked by regulars. Most of these tables weren’t in use still and the pub quiet as it often is before the quiz. When the food did arrive it didn’t all fit on the table and my partner had to start eating her meal off her knee and everyone else’s food was hanging over the edge. My friend went back to the staff to ask again if we could use one of the empty tables and was told that regulars to the pub book specific tables and they cannot be moved, all this while still looking at empty tables. When it was explained one of us was having to eat off of their knee the staff member replied “other people manage to eat at those tables”. We were then told we could eat in the upstairs function room so after carrying our food upstairs we were left in a dark miserable room to eat our food. When we returned downstairs to our original table for the quiz, at least two of the tables that were reserved for 7:30pm still had nobody at them despite it now being almost 8pm. So we could have eaten our meals there and still been back at our original table without causing anyone any inconvenience. I’m not sure most places would hold tables for people 20 mins after a booking time in a busy pub where people were being turned away who wanted a table. It was quite clear at this point being a “regular customer” at this pub gives you special privileges. Despite all the drama and abysmal customer service from the staff we continued on and enjoyed the quiz. The straw that broke the camels back was when one of the regular teams at the quiz changed their team name to “If you don’t f**cking like it bring your own table next time” was read out at the end. Both bar staff looked at us and made a point of laughing. If this is the sort of staff this place now employs that look after regular customers like visiting Royalty and then mocks other customers, who have spent over £80 on food and drinks and not just turned up to nurse a pint and gobble the free chips they put out then I’m glad I won’t be going back. I’m quite sure this review won’t harm or damage the pub and I’m sure they won’t miss the revenue we brought to the pub but the terrible staff will eventually upset enough people that people will find other places with quizzes, nice food, nice beer and maybe even proper sized tables.

I have been to the Pig & Pump numerous times over the last 2 years, mainly for food and the Tuesday night quiz, which has always been great. However after tonight’s experience I will never return to this establishment again and won’t be recommending it to anyone either. 4 of us booked a table for food at 7pm to be followed by the 8pm quiz. When we got there we had been placed on a high, small round table near the bar. These tables are more suited to drinking rather than eating. Due to there being several other empty tables for 4 available I asked one of the blonde waitresses if we could possibly swop. I was told no as they were both reserved for regular customers. I went back to our table, another large table came free so again I asked the same waitress if we could move there. To which I got the same reply ‘no it’s reserved for our regular customers’. Our food came out which was a large sharing platter, fajitas and a pie meal. Along with 4 drinks and condiments. The table was so full that the sharing platter was hanging off the table and 2 people had to start eating off their knee. I went over to the other blonde waitress and said that this isn’t acceptable and we was not eating off our knee. The waitress turned around in an arrogant tone and said ‘well there’s nowhere else for you, everybody else eats fine at those tables’ I said ‘my friend is eating off her knee, how is that right’. The blonde older waitress said the only option was that we eat upstairs in the function room away from everyone else. We had no other option but to take this. We had to go up a flight of stairs to a cold, empty and lifeless room to eat our meal. When we came back down for the quiz at 7:45pm the other large tables were still empty even though they had ‘reserved for 7:30pm’ signs on them. All the 2 blonde waitresses had to do was allow us to eat our meals at those tables and we would have happily gone back to our smaller table after. Instead we were met we 2 of the most arrogant and unhelpful bar staff members I have ever witnessed. They didn’t care about the issue and certainly didn’t try to resolve it. To make matters worse each team that participates in the quiz has an anonymous team name, strangely one of the team names was ‘if your not happy with your table then f***ing bring your own’… coincidence, I doubt it seeing as the 2 blonde bar staff laughed when it was read out. An absolute disgrace that clearly someone was having a dig at us. For anyone going I wouldn’t bother, it’s clear that the only people the staff are bothered about are the ‘regular customers’ and this is even more apparent in the fact that the winning team of the quiz are usually ‘one of the regular’ teams. I can’t fault the food but we certainly won’t be returning to this pub, where the 2 female bar staff need serious retraining on customer service seeing as they work in the hospitality industry. A bad review can be damaging for a business and thanks to them the Pig & Pump now has one and has lost 4 customers and potentially more due to their actions.

Excellent traditional pub located right next to Chesterfield's famous "crooked spire" church. We stopped here for lunch on our way back south after a visit to the Peaks. Very glad we did. The service was good. And the food was great. They have a large menu with a variety of choices. I had one of their many burgers which was delicious. Thoroughly recommend this pub. And will gladly stop here if and when I visit Chesterfield again.

This visit we enjoyed a mix of massive onion rings side, hot honey halloumi rolls, grilled sourdough triple cheese, salami and jalapeno sandwich with house slaw and fries... All really tasty and good portions. Definitely looking forward to the next visit.

We went on a Sunday for some dinner, they serve food until 7pm on Sundays and we got there just before and still were served. Came in on a cold Sunday evening when everywhere else looked closed. From the outside it lulls you into the illusion of a good place for food ... The staff are friendly enough and I thought I would try their turkey Christmas dinner. Waited 45 mins for re used microwaved black carrots ; toasties so hard it took several attempts to saw through them. Meat ok but nothing startling. I've eaten better in a Weather spoons and frankly at least you know what you are eating there. This is definitely somewhere for people who either like badly booked microwave food or people too drunk to care what it tastes like or people who have bad their taste buds surgically removed. Definitely one to avoid

Great service, great atmosphere and an even better selection of beers. But oh my god does the food let it down. I ordered the buttermilk chicken wrap and it was laced with insane amount of salt. The red wine chorizo I ordered was made with far too much garlic that not only overpowered the dish to the point you couldn't taste the wine or chorizo, but ruined the pallete and overpowered the entire dish. My friend had the pork cob and she said it was very chewy. Pretty disappointing visit to be honest. Would return for drinks definitely bit not for food

The prices here are very typical for pubs nowadays but the food is most certainly not. Not only is the menu impressively varied with some south east Asian items not usually found alongside the traditional pub grub. The servings were very generous and the food was very high quality. On top of the excellent food for reasonable prices, The Pig & Pump is also right across the road from surely Chesterfields main (possibly only) attraction, the wonky church spire. Well worth popping in if you're visiting. 5/5

I was meeting 3 friends in Chesterfield - we were travelling by train from different towns. It was our first visit Chesterfield so I had no idea where would be the best place to meet up. So thank you Google for navigating us to the Pig & Pump. I searched for the nearest walkable pub to the train station in the direction of our accommodation and what a find it was. There was only one other gentleman in the pub as 2 of us arrived - but it soon became clear that it was a popular pub both for having a pleasant drink or a meal. We did just that, and had a sharing platter which was very good. I want to make particular reference to our waiter - Will. A young lad with a great personality. He was attentive, interesting and a credit to the pub - thank you Will.

First time at the Pig and Pump. Booked a table as read it gets very busy. It was quiet when we arrived. The staff are very friendly and polite. My daughter and son in law ordered the nacho sharing board. Plenty of food for a starter for 2. We then ordered our burgers on the sharing board. We chose the Elvis. Unfortunately my daughter and I found them abit dry due to the peanut sauce. We should of known as peanut butter is dry, so our fault. Chips were lovely just like you would cook at home. Plenty of food for 2 on the board. As it was my birthday I was the only one to order a dessert. Apple crumble with ice cream. I did expect a deep apple crumble with plenty of apple. As the portions are plentiful but I was disappointed at the size. Very small. I think I just had the crumble no apple. £7 was abit steep. So would give dessert a miss. I didn't like to complain as my birthday and manager was very nice. Would love to go again and try their pies.

Visited for the 1st time yesterday, late Saturday lunchtime, without booking a table. The pub was nicely decorated with a few special original features like the stained glass windows with the white swans on ( the pub's original name. ) Most of the tables had little reserved signs on already but they all had the time they were booked for so after asking permission we were able to sit at a table reserved for 5pm as we knew we'd be finished long before then. The 3 of us all ordered burgers, my husband & I had the burger sharing board which is excellent value at £24 for 2 people, it was a really generous portion of delicious homemade chips, homemade coleslaw, 2 dips & tasty onion rings with the 2 burgers of your choice. My cousin also had a burger with chips & coleslaw. The meals came after a reasonable wait, not too quickly or slowly, just the right amount of time to show the meals are homemade & they were piping hot. We all really enjoyed the food, the chips especially were excellent & the burgers thick & tasty. We were really full for the rest of the day ! We felt the food was good quality, well cooked & good value for money, we would definitely return to the Pig & Pump the next time we visit Chesterfield. The staff were also very friendly & smiley & patient with our requests about the garnishes on the burgers ! The only reason I've knocked a star off was the toilets were a bit plain & basic compared to the nice decor in the pub. Thank you for a lovely meal & see you again, we'll book next time as it's obviously a popular place to dine in Chesterfield.

Firstly, I never write a good review upon a first visit, just in case I landed on a good day, so ….. Fifth or sixth visit to The Pig & Pump, each time a more than positive experience. Our most recent visit involved reserving a table via phone for a Saturday evening supper for two. Buses being what they are these days, we were delayed for 45 minutes - called ahead to explain, and were told that was not a problem. The food is always excellent and the portions generous. Kitchen to table time is swift and the staff friendly, helpful and attentive without being in your face. There’s a good vibe about the place, it being light and airy with a nice cross section of young and old, drinkers and diners. There’s selection of craft ale (if that’s your thing) and prices for both drinks and food, tremendous value. *Home made fish finger bloomer, with mushy peas and large portion of the best skin-on-chips I’ve ever tasted, comes in at about a tenner. Yes, this is a somewhat gushing review, but good service along with quality and great value is something to be applauded. Well done Pig & Pump, a Big Up to all.

Been here before and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. But this time, I was stunned, and not in a good way. We had meatballs as part of the starter, they were a soggy mess. Found out that the meat had been mixed with breadcrumbs. Far too much if the meatballs are soggy when you bite into them. Then we had burgers. Very strange consistency, again mixed with breadcrumbs, but the 'meat' was very pale in colour. Not convinced it was all beef. Presentation is lovely, and the venue is great, but I certainly wouldn't eat here again. I'd sooner eat at the weatherspoons next door than here again!

If we are in the area again, we will be back but we'll be sure to book next time!

Chicken caesar salad consisted of chicken croutons and lettuce. The bacon was almost none existent but the chicken was moist and well cooked

I visited with friends on a Saturday afternoon. The pub was busy (we got the last table) despite arriving at 2pm but this gave it a nice atmosphere. If you were a group, I got the impression that you ought to book to be sure of a table. The food offering was your traditional pub fare. I had a burger with onion rings and my friend the lamb pie of the day. Food arrived in a reasonable time. Portions were very generous. My burger was nice, onion rings slightly over cooked, chips were delicious and looked hand cut. My friends were very impressed with their pies. The staff were helpful and polite.

I arrived a bit before my friends and secured a table which was good because it was packed out. However before I could finish my drink and my friends could arrive the staff put a reservation card on the table I was sat at which meant I only had 20 minutes to drink up and leave. This would not give my friends enough time to arrive and eat so I had to leave. Very disappointed that I was essentially made to leave. When I arrived and bought a drink and garlic bread the bar staff had difficulty identifying what table I was at and was quite rude in the process. Not sure why they didn't have table numbers like anywhere else or know the layout of the pub.

We went with friends and booked a table as we were going there to eat. The table wasn't even big enough to get two peoples food on it never mind four. However we all had the fajitas and it was very nice.

We also had to send one dish back 1 Star – Overcharged for a Dash of Lemonade We visited this pub and spent over £90 on food and drinks, only to be charged an extra £1 per dash of lemonade added to lager. £3 in total for what was basically a splash of mixer—completely unreasonable and no justification for it. This kind of pricing feels like a joke, especially after ordering multiple meals and drinks. We won’t be back, and I’ll be sharing this publicly so others don’t get stung the same way. Greed like this leaves a bad taste
