Beautifully situated on the waterfront, opposite Queen Anne's Battery Marina. Wonderful panoramic views in all directions and a hot spot if you catch the sun right. Outside decor and furniture's not all that and could do with an update but the food, wine and service is divine. I only had a starter and was pleasantly surprised - king prawns I chorizo and garlic cream based sauce, served with garlic buttered Ciabataa on the side, & a wedge of lemon. I also had a glass of Pinot Noir Della Venezie, sharp, crisp and delisch with the food.

The service is slow and poorly staffed. The food is overcooked and probably straight from the freezer. Cleanliness isn’t good and desperately needs updating. It definitely needs some tlc.

The Moorland Hotel is under new management and it is now absolutely shocking. We've had 2 out of 2 bad experiences in the last few weeks which will mean we will NEVER go again despite the fact that it used to be our favourite place to go (before it changed hands). Firstly, we had a 50th birthday meal booked. A pretty big occasion you'd agree. However, we were phoned just a few days before the meal to be told that they'd have to cancel because they had a large wedding on with the guests staying over and implied, therefore, that they were more important and took priority over us. We were left looking for somewhere else to go at short notice. At that point, I suggested they had lost our business, but foolishly we gave them another chance. Their second chance was today. We've just got back from holiday abroad, no food in etc, so we decided to eat out. We checked on the Moorland's website and booked a table for two and received the reservation confirmation. When we got there, the manager looked surprised and said "we are no longer doing food". We explained we had a booking and he just stated again "we've stopped doing food". "But we have a booking" we explained again. It turns out, that despite the signs outside saying "Sunday roast 12-2pm" and despite the website, new owners took over a month or so ago and have stopped doing food and just haven't bothered to update the website. What sort of amateur runs a company like that? Takes over, doesn't bother to make even a single little change to the website, not even a "under new management" notice. But worse, leaves the old site working so that you can book a meal and turn up for it to find out they don't do food! I wouldn't go back in a million years now.

Family meal for four out at the Moorland Starters 2x King Prawns, 1x Grilled Mozzarella really enjoyed the Grilled Mozzarella , lots of different flavours with the tomato and crispy bacon bits mixed into the cheese. A very tasty dish Mains 3x Rump, 1x Fillet Steak A rare blip on one of the rump Steaks, looked very thin and over done compared to the others on the table and was tough to cut. we bought it to the servers attention who said its sometimes just how the cow is cut but when i pointed out how it looked compared to the other two rumps on the table she took it back to the kitchen and the meal was replaced and much better and appreciated. Everyone then enjoyed there mains. Dessert 1x Strawberry Brulee, 1x Bread Butter Pud, 1x Cheese board Nice choice of cheese available to choose three from for cheese board. and good size portions of cheese and plenty of biscuits as well as chutney, grapes and celery. Got a great flame going on the brulee when bought out with desserts. Shame about rare blip with one of Steaks but still another good night at the Moorland none the less :)

A good selection of starters, main courses and desserts to choose with a good wine list. Would highly recommend the Seafood Chowder and the Roast Tomato Soup. The fish and double cookedchips is a "whale" sized portion so be warned ! With such a variety of well cooked and prepared food it is difficult to chose what not to have ! Competitively priced, and a relaxed and quiet restaurant, the restaurant staff are keen to be of service but are never intrusive. Wherever you are staying in the Plymouth area a trip up to the Phoenix Restaurant at The Moorland at Wotter is well worth the effort - you will not be disappointed. One thing - ring first to book a table as the restaurant is rather popular !

Christmas Party with Theatre group from Ivybridge, 23 of us in total and staff had absolutely no trouble what so ever dealing with such a large group. From moment walked in the door staff were friendly and welcoming both the girls on the bar serving and the other staff attending to other clients. everyone friendly, smiling and saying 'hello, welcome' etc. When entire party had gathered and mingled for a bit in the bar area we were lead to private upstairs function room and met simple but nicely decorated Christmas table with crackers. Meal was booked for 7.30pm and bang on 7.30pm the Starters came up the stairs and were served. I had the Baked Goats Cheese ~ Fresh Fig ~ Pine Nuts ~ Crostini Toast Starter. Very generous portion of Goats cheese, warm and easily spreadable on the Crostini Toast and plenty left to eat along with the side salad. Toast was perhaps a little tough/over done but still a very enjoyable Starter. Tables quickly cleared after everyone had finished starters as well as clearing up some of mess from crackers and games we had bung. Traditional Roast Devon Turkey ~ Festive Garnish ~ Roast Gravy for mains. Again a very nice meal and very generous portions of food. plenty of turkey and veg pots of two to share amongst our selves but was more than enough for everyone. Cheese and Biscuits desserts. Nice sizes of the 3 traditional Cheeses (Cheddar, Brie and Stilton) but think general consensus amongst myself and others was could of done with more biscuits as only 3 wasn't enough for the cheese sizes, though its better to have more cheese and less biscuit than other way around. Tea, Coffee and Mince pies offered and served to finish off After meal there was a disco downstairs for us for choose who wished to partake but those who didn't could still stay upstairs and chat so perfect for everyone and didn't have to worry about belongings on dance floor as safe in private room. All in all the perfect venue for the perfect Christmas party. God bless us, everyone :)

My rump steak was tasty and of good quality but unfortunately served Luke warm. The same could be said for my son's swordfish. Good choice of steaks on the menu but the rest of it was rather limited. That didn't particularly bother me as it is a steakhouse after all! Just not so good for those not wanting a steak. Lovely position on the edge of the Moors with good views towards Plymouth and the coast from the rear. Staff were attentive and pleasant.

Taking advantage of the two Steaks for £12 deal. only available if you pre book in advance and advise that you will be having this deal. Arrived for our 7pm sitting and headed to the bar to be shown to our table. quite busy in the bar area and when the lady serving had finished the few people before us she shown us to our table. Think maybe people going into eat in the restaurant area could maybe be met or wait to be seated in a differ area (if meant to we completely missed this) just because got very congested at the bar considering we weren't actually interested at the bar, 3 people drinking on bar stools at the bar, and two other customers just ordering drinks got quite crowded in smallish area. Anyways on to the main event the meal. both of us ordered starters, I had the Bruleéd Brie and my fiance had the garlic King Prawns. both were excellent. the Brulleed Brie came with generous potion of toasted bread to spread caramelised brie on with plenty of butter (actually forgot to use one of sachets) and nice cranberry dip/spread as well. Both very well presented on plate. The mains of course were 2x Rump Steaks for £12....BEST STEAKS IN DEVON!!! nice and thick but easy to cut and both excellently cooked (one rare one medium) and decent size for the price. plenty of other food on the plate as well peas, salad, coleslaw, and so many potato choices can't remember all (fries, twisted fries, sweet potato, jacket...think was more) not an empty space on the plate. bought very nice pepper corn sauce to go with both as well, again very tasty. no dessert as simple didn't have enough room after such a generous feed but will certainly be back another time (Christmas party already booked). Lovely clean and well furnish restaurant and staff were very friendly and attentive throughout evening. five stars! :)

Another leisurely birthday celebration at the Moorland with excellent well presented meals. Being a Monday it was fairly quiet but all three tables in use were adjacent. The meals did take a while to come but we were not in a hurry and they were certainly all freshly cooked. Service was good and we were kept informed on progress. Realised I put this review on Moorland Hotel page - well they are both the same business.

We ate there on two evenings. The food in general is well-cooked. The steaks we ate on the first night were done exactly as we requested. On the second night we had fish. The salmon was very nicely cooked, but the so-called "rare side of medium-rare" swordfish steak was somewhere between medium and well-done - tasty, but not as requested. The chef does not know how to do proper "crispy" chips; even the extra-crispy ones they offered were flaccid.

This restaurant, part of the Moorland Hotel, Wotter, enjoys spectacular views from its dining rooms, and its adjacent outdoors patio, southwards over Plymouth Sound and the ocean beyond. Our dining experience on the two days we ate there was a somewhat mixed experience, both good and not so good. A cooked breakfast was up to the mark and importantly freshly cooked , and the following morning's continental offering...continental! What surprised us was the first Sunday evening's meal, beef dinners allround, was simply superb, with high quality Devon grass-fed meat, beautifully cooked and melting in the mouth...simply sublime. However, looking forwards to dining here on the Monday evening, we all expressed our disappointment, mine a supposed Kangaroo fillet, cooked rare to medium was tough and gristly, accompanied by an uninspired large salad. My companions were underwhelmed with their choices too. After our earlier experiences, this was such a pity, but would not stop our returning to dine here again because most of our eating was well enjoyed.

Stayed here for two nights and ate here both nights. They gave us the menu whilst we enjoyed a drink in the bar and took us through when our table was ready. Service was good and friendly. Tables were well spaced out and not crowded. Prices for main courses ranged from around £13-18, with starters and desserts priced at £5 or £7 for cheese. They specialise in steaks so I had the 'steak of the day' on the first night; a rib-eye which was probably the best steak I've ever had! They have a chart of 'done-ness' for the steaks and are reluctant to cook steak any more than medium, which was fine for us. I had salmon on the second night, which I think was the largest salmon fillet I've ever had. Nice starters and desserts also, we didn't indulge in the cheese, but there was a large choice of cheeses to select from, with a description of each. A window seat will give you a view right down to the Hoe.

Surprised that this hotel restaurant is under the Plymouth listings. It's a fair trek out of town. I have marked it down only for that. It is not fancy or flash food but it is hearty robust fodder, predominantly steaks chips and peas where the steaks are good. There are other choices of main courses including fish and nothing over £16 which is competitive and genuine value. Some slightly odd decor in the dining room, not least the lamp standard but it has a certain dated modest appeal. If we spent a day up on the moor then we might well call in here on the way home but on our two visits here it has been busy and the website suggests that reservations are almost essential.

This place is worth the travel. You may have to book a day in advance as it's well known in the area. It's attached to the Moorland hotel which means peak seasons it's packed. The Phoenix decor inside is a little quirky and adds to the charm of the menu. You have to wait a little while longer than some places due to staffing. My favourite steak on the menu is the Kangaroo, honestly I know what some will be thinking as I thought it too...before I threw myself in and tried it. I was a sirloin or fillet girl before but kangaroo is beautiful and decadent. The best way to taste it is rare. The waffles are lovely after and the chef provides a wide selection of ice creams with desserts. The Phoenix will always be a favourite for me, if not for the staff and food, for the hotel, the restoration of the art deco exterior and the lovely view outside over Dartmoor.

Really worth the short drive (25 mins) to get out of the bustle of Plymouth centre to the serenity of the moors. And that view must be the best in Devon. Last visit, we sat outside on the sun deck and just soaked in the Summer evening whilst gazing over Plymouth Sound, watching a little group of ponies and a foal wander off the moor and into the car park. Visited here for the first time on a quiet Friday evening. For some reason tables weren't available until quarter to 7 despite there basically being no one in there on arrival. After around 15 minutes (way too long) orders were taken - we both opted for sirloin steaks, cooked medium and medium rare. These took a further 25 minutes or so to arrive. The steaks were quite tender and cooked accurately though a little fatty in places. The chips were good as were the onion rings. The peppercorn sauce was a little thin. We didn't have time for dessert due to the slow service and so had to pay at the bar and leave. Whilst the food was fine, I wouldn't return as the service was slow, although it was friendly. Cost around £17 a head including a drink for one course plus side.

As we was staying at the hotel we decided on eating here as that way we didn’t have to drive and we both could have a drink. We ordered a drink at the bar and had a seat whilst looking through the menu for our starters and main. Our orders were taken and just before the starters was brought out we was directed to our table in the restaurant. For starters I had the butterflied garlic king prawns and my girlfriend had the duck breast with peach slices. The duck and peach combo worked really well and was cooked to perfection. For our mains I had the 16oz steak with chips, side salad, mushrooms and a side order of onion rings. Sadly my steak was more like medium to well cooked than the rare to medium that i ordered. My girlfriend had the guinea fowl with pear puree, fondant potatoes, carrots and courgettes. Again this was cooked really well. Desserts followed and I had Lemon and orange sorbets whilst my girlfriend had the pannacotta. The pannacotta was full of vanilla and set to perfection and one of the best she has eaten. We then shared a cheese board a Cornish blue, a mild cheddar and Wenslydale with apricots that was too sweet for us. Celery, grapes and heavy oat biscuits also came with the cheese board. We would eat here again but I would ask for my steak to be cooked rare. A big thank you to Hannah who worked her socks off and made our night a very enjoyable experience.

Whilst staying at the Moorland Hotel, we used the Phoenix Steakhouse for our breakfasts. Great food, exactly what a full enlgish should be. Set us up for the day. Add to this the friendly staff and you couldn't ask for more.

The pigeon and black pudding wellington was simply devine.Followed by Kangaroo steak, all with an unbelievable view. As this evening was a nice clear evening I had a view all the way down the Plymouth sound and the Plymouth eye.The whole evening was finished off with great service, which made the visit even better.

We ate here twice in a row because the meals were simply but perfectly prepared. Steak and veg cooked just right. The children were happy with their meals as well, but couldn't help but request more and more bites of steak from the grownups.

I cant think of any words other than yum yum to describe the food. Its a good restaurant, food is cooked very well, service is spot on and the wine was tasty. I cant think of a reason why more people dont go here.

My partner and I have visited Phoenix around a dozen times now and have never had anything other than an excellent Steak! Be it Rump , Kangaroo or filet they have all been very good quality and cook exactly how you want them ( rare or blue in our case). The waitresses were all friendly and attentive and there was nice buzz about the place , from both residents and non-residents, the décor is a little Spartan ,unlike the bedrooms in the hotel which are smart and contemporary ( we have stayed a couple of times ). The menu is very good value and the views are panoramic and fantastic over the moors towards Plymouth sound well worth the 15-20 minute drive . We left full and happy and will be back again soon :-)

The staff are friendly and helpful and the steaks excellent value for money. My sister who isn`t a steak lover had a wonderful sea bass. Portions are the right size, and the staff attentive but not intusive. It is not flashy, but very comfortable. Worth the trip out of town.I would imagine during the summer months it would be great to sit outside and look at the views.

went to the hotel for a meal. service was awful, waited around for 10 minutes to be seated. once seated the menu hardly tickled ones palette! with very limited choices. we opted for the roast beef dinner eventually. the waitress seemed disgusted with my partner for not having a starter and tried to force him to have something (it wasn't going to happen). we finally got our roast dinners. me and my grandma had to share the vegetables, my partner was given his own and instructed he MUST eat all his veg by the waitress. the food was barely warm (I'm just thankful it was beef or god knows the consequences). my partner ate all his food for fear of what the waitress would say if he didn't. he was apparently a good boy for finishing all his. needless to say we didn't have dessert. we couldn't get out of there fast enough and headed to the nearest supermarket for a dessert instead.

Unfortunately extremely overpriced and very limited choice. Is not what Sailor V was in previous years! Wouldn't waste my time going back... Plenty of nicer venues in the centre of town at more reasonable prices

Awful from start to finish. The staff were clueless and the food and drinks were mediocre at a push. Loaded fries were more like semi dusted with topping and straight out of the freezer. The buttermilk chicken burger was more like a mini chicken fillet. When we complained we were met with a staff member who obviously wasn’t trained to deal with complaints as her response was ‘you keep complaining’! I would not recommend this restaurant and I find it strange how they claim to have hundreds of happy customers but only a handful of reviews on TA. Work out what you are. Are you a cocktail bar or a restaurant? May I also suggest that if you are the owner you maybe spend a bit more time working at your own restaurant and also train your staff.

The coffee is great and the best prices around for the quality and size. The light bites were delicious, again very well priced for what you get. Would definitely recommend if you aren’t too fussed about coffee with a view or environment or brand name.
