What a wonderful day we had,my two grandchildren, myself and jackoo my parrot. We had food that was out of this world even the kids said about it,from there we seen the animals and jackoo was in competition making noise with the cranes we then finished with ice cream. Really friendly place and people a wonderful day had by all.

Banging Sunday dinner, loved the little zoo and would eat here every weekend if I lived closer ( and didn’t have 3 kids) good job guys. Also love the artwork in the gaff

We enjoyed a wonderful evening meal (off the Specials board) here this week. It was the best meal of our holiday. Top marks to the chef! The decor of the pub Is brilliant, loved it! Highly recommended.

This place is a gem. Staying in the area for a few days and we're so glad we stopped for food. Very tasty food, the staff were genuinely friendly and the place looks great. We'll be back here before heading home for sure.

We had lunch today four different main meals plus two starters. Although they were busy we felt like we were the only people there, service was prompt staff were friendly and the food was all freshly cooked and local produce, they even cooked mushroom linguine which wasn’t even on the menu. It was truly a delight for us all. We have recently moved to the area and since I am in a wheelchair it is difficult to find excellent places for food. Most places like one down the rd are not interested in catering for wheelchair users. Here you can eat upstairs or down stairs as the also have a lift inside. Absolutely made my day Oh yes portions were huge Wonderful surroundings really relaxing atmosphere. Forgot to take pictures of other two meals lol Ty see you soon.

Stayed in the adjacent cottage for the weekend with family. Great accommodation and having the pub next door is ideal. We had a delicious breakfast Sunday morning too. Great walks nearby. The zoo was a little noisy early morning but otherwise a lovely stay. Staff at the pub were soo friendly and helpful

Meal was fantastic. We were a group of 7 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs. Staff were brilliant and attentive. We all had various starters, mains and desserts and there were no issues. It was a special day for us as we were celebrating my sister and dad's birthdays. Thank you so much for having us!

A fabulous pub to eat and drink lovely atmosphere inside and out. Food was excellent ( burger, venison & ham) lovely deserts and Great service too. To top it all the micro zoo😊. Make a donation and get to see Parotts, meerkats wallabies, cranes ( with recently hatched baby cranes,) peacocks and other birds. Great lay out and clean. Fabulous, highly recommended.

We didnt have food here but definitely will go back to eat. Had drinks and visited the small zoo of rescue animals . Who are extremely well looked after lovely large enclosures. Beautiful beer garden Fabulous location

Stopped for a coffee on a sunny day en-route to Swansea. Had an excellent cappucino served in the sunny garden with views of surrounding hills. Very nice bar area, with Ducati motorbike and there is a zoo at the back adjacent to the carpark. A peacock was strolling through the rear gardens as we left. We stopped off again for another high-quality coffee on our return trip the following day.

We stayed at the Sleeping Giant Hotel on the grounds of Penycae Inn for a long bank holiday weekend in March as a group of 4 plus a little doggy. We came to eat at Penycae Inn every day and the food was delicious every single time! The portions for the main dishes are large and the quality of ingredients and cooking is very high. The desserts were incredible. We had the special salted caramel creme brulee - we since went to a French restaurant and had the creme brulee but it was seriously lacking in comparison to Penycae Inn. As well as the food, the staff are lovely. Especially Chef Anthony and Nathan who was there morning until night from what we could tell! Chef Anthony (the owner) is a truly lovely man to speak with. He gave us some excellent tips on nice walks whilst avoiding heavy tourist traps - and if you have the time, he has such an interesting life story to tell too! We would definitely return here for the food and recommend it to anyone in the area - well worth the drive too even if you aren't local.

Food was amazing, service really attentive, and lovely atmosphere. The zoo is a nice extra thing to do as well. Definitely recommend popping in for dinner if you’re in the area, the cheesy garlic bread is delicious and my partner said his gammon was the nicest gammon he has ever had!

My partner and I were staying at a local campsite for a place to eat for our anniversary. This place exceeded expectations with very attentive staff and a lovely service. There was this specific gentleman taking out drinks orders and he knew every there was to know - explains what every drink was! The food was delicious and the only downside was my partners steak was rather over priced. Besides from that the burger was amazing, the starters were better than anything, and the staff should all give themselves a good pat on the back. Thank you for making our day!

What an amazing meal we had, the staff here are second to none and the food was amazing. We had a great time here it was all reasonably priced too, although the ladies toilets didn't have any soap in the dispenser 😔

Stayed at the Sleeping Giant lodge on site- the cookery was on par with high end restaurants in london- and the staff super attentive and friendly. Couldn't fault anything and would recommend a visit or 3! The creme brulee was excellent

Well, what a surprise, it is never certain how a place will measure up even if the reviews look great, cannot agree with a recent negative posting, was the poster somewhere else? Last night 18/04 we enjoyed a fantastic dinner at Penycae Inn, from the minute we walked in we were warmly greeted by smiling friendly staff, what an asset that is to have a team all on board with delighting their customers, it is exceptionally rare to see that applying to ALL the staff team. Anyway, we chose 2 Beef Rib and 1 Linguine, plates arrived HOT, portions generous and well presented, taste of the rib beef with the jus quite stunning really. The owners and staff team should be very proud of what they all achieved last night. A generous tip was obviously deserved. Very highly recommended indeed. Thank you.

I can’t recommend this place highly enough. Great food, great service, especially Aaron the drinks waiter and fabulous atmosphere. If I lived near here I’d be there at least once a week. Every dish we got was faultless.

Well! we are only the first night in and wow. Everything has been top tier! We came to stay in the suites for my wife's 40th. The room is exactly as advertised. Super clean and just perfect. The staff that welcomed us were so accommodating and friendly and went the extra mile to make the room special for my wife. Just got back from dinner and another wow! The food was amazing! Everything homemade and delicious. I'm a hard critic when it comes to food but that was great. Wife had the creamy mushrooms and I had the fried halloumi for starters, everything was well seasoned and tasty. We had the cajun chicken and the homemade burger and that it was! No frozen packet rubbish here. Chicken was cooked to perfection and the homemade chips were to die for. All very reasonably priced. Hats off to the chefs, keep up the great work. I saw another review about all the staff being young and inexperienced, yes they were young and most likely new to the industry but they were all amazing. A breathe of fresh air and so friendly. What a start to our trip! Thank you Pen Y Cae Inn and all of your amazing staff.

Little pricey on bar snacks, nice place though and would return.. staff are friendly and place is clean.. seemed difficult to get a booking for food, lots of empty tables inside but said fully booked..settled for bar snacks outside.. parking is tight and flows out to the road on the kerbside. Zoo in the back area is a good idea and in fairness probably has better and more animals than a national zoo..I'll try again to book in advance for a table for 4..

Stopped in late, and they found us a table, and all staff really friendly, we had a delicious meal, couldn't even fit pudding in. Also had a rescue zoo but didn't see it as dark. Would definitely eat there again the main course £20- £30 ish but worth it. There is some quirky artwork and a motorbike 😁 to keep the conversation going!

Brilliant find while on our travels in Wales. Great choice of music, fantastic food and Parrots were a bonus for the kids! The children loved the zoo! Beautiful inside to the pub also. Massive food portions. Don't miss it.

A beautiful selection of art and animals delicately collected with the utmost respect and dignity... Haven't got as far as the food yet but it's certainly on the agenda soon!

The food was excellent, but we felt the hospitality lacking 😪 I had booked a table advising them we would have dogs but we were shoved on the coffee table to eat our meal which wasn't comfortable and then other people with dogs were shown into the restaurant. It was a shame as the waiter did his best but we felt ignored.

Best steak I've ever had - great atmosphere and food - was given the wrong bottle of champagne and a dirty glass, but was promptly ltly corrected

Had a great burger and a wonderful beer. Told the waiter to surprise me with something local and he didn’t disappoint.

Really disappointed as the review is over rated. Food is ok but we have been to a lot better. A chain of pubs normally do more in this circumstance The steak is fatty. The fish pie is mainly mashed potato. Not have enough fish, prawn etc The salmon roulade is nice but that start and ends there. The gammon is dry and not appetising. The chips and onion rings looks like from a frozen bag. Soggy. Nothing gastropub the way it's presented😱😱😱 They don't serve cocktails!!! The staff are young and not really that knowledgeable or interested. No proper hospitality experience or customer service. We asked for bluelight but both had no idea or interest. It's just a matter of yes and no. We were not even asked if we want another drink, not offered a pitcher or glass of water. We did not have the interest to order pudding. My husband even have to go to the bar to pay as no one is around or asked us if we want to pay athough they already collected the plates. We just can't wait to go. Very dissatisfied as it's my birthday dinner and staying locally in the area and would have expected bit more. Definitely not coming back. The cottage we are staying even recommended the place. Will feedback about our not so nice experience

So i stayed here for 2 nights. I could have stayed forever! The area is lovely for starters. Very close for hiking in the brecon beacons which is why I was there. The only reason I couldn't stay is that I will be extremely fat and very poor 😂 The food is absolutely levels above anything I have eaten in years. And it was consistent! We had 2 breakfasts, 2 mains and some sides and had zero complaints about any of it. Tipping isn't something that common i don't feel in the UK, however if my meal and drinks can to £51.20, I gave them £60 and said keep my money. The staff are so welcoming, helpful and polite I felt they deserved every penny. The roast beef i could have eaten with a spoon it was that tender. I live 2 hours away and would definitely go purely to eat and drive back. Worth it! This is genuinely a hidden gem that deserves every bit of praise and recognition they get. (Even though I kinda don't want everyone to find out so it's harder to book a table) And just to top it all off, after eating all of the beautiful food, there's a little zoo around the back to wonder around to walk it off. 😀

The food was great. Believe me when I say it's tasty. I have the palate of a Filipino and a tastebuds of an Arab.

Very good food and service. With regard to the service, I was very impressed by Aaron who took our order. His knowledge of the menu and range of draught beers on offer was excellent. I would thoroughly recommend a visit to the Penycae Inn, which is located in a beautiful countryside setting (close to 'Graig yr Nos' Country park) and gateway to the stunning 'Brecon Beacons National Park'. I visited the Penycae Inn (29/03/25) along with a large group of family members for an evening meal to celebrate a family Birthday and Mother's day. Considering we were a party of 15 people in total, the staff were extremely helpful and the service, along with the meals were excellent. If you are looking for somewhere with a choice of special dishes, including a varied selection of meals on the menu, excellent food and service, along with a good atmosphere, then look no further than the Penycae Inn.

Travelled from Hereford for my wives birthday. Totally amazing everything about it. Food is amazing as are the staff.

Beautiful location however the service and attendancy lacks character. Selective service and double standards.

Anthony, Claire and their wonderful staff didn't disappoint with our lunch today. Extremely good value for bowl and platefuls of deliciousness. We love the food, the atmosphere and the zoo. We recommend this fantastic business time and time again 😀

This is one of the worst places to go please don’t go here the animals look like they are not fed and I don’t think they are I think this cruel place just has them as display the workers here are horrible people and the food is horrible i found a hair in my stake and it wasn’t mine because I have blond hair and the hair was black please get this please closed down!

We fell in love with Oak Lodge the minute we arrived. It was a perfect home from home but also a great base from which to explore the four waterfalls. The pub/restaurant next door was second to none. We will not forget our meal last night for a very long time. The icing on the cake was the beautiful zoo. Absolutely charming and all of the animals so happy, well cared for and in great condition. Very highly recommended as a family getaway.

Came here for a meal whilst on holiday, nine of us including three children. Got off to a great start with a walk around the mini zoo. Member of staff came out to bring the two parrots in for the evening, let my two kids have them on their arms. Service was prompt and friendly, quality of food excellent. Menu varied. Kids' portions generous. All in all an excellent experience, can recommend

Had a special birthday there yesterday with 23 people. Was asked to pre book the meals which was done 5 days prior. When we were eventually served they had run out of certain meals !!! so no point in rebooting and some meals were brought way after others. Such a shame as we have always had really lovely meals in the past. Not sure what happened but they let themselves down.

Very poor service. Tried to book an earlier time but was told it had to be later, which I happily accepted. All drinks and food was slammed down on the table and the drinks spilt over my phone and wallet, which we cleaned up ourselves, not to make a thing of it. Asked twice to place a food order, when the same waitress on the second time of asking snapped back at me that the kitchens are behind. Rarely complained but did. Really don’t mind paying a premium for food, but not to be treated that way. Many dishes on the menu were unavailable. I get being busy, but my booking shouldn’t have been taken. Would much rather been told we are fully booked than treated that way.

Driving through and last minute searched Google for somewhere to eat. This place was 5 minutes away! What a little find! The food was amazing. The animals they have outside my little boy loved and staff were very friendly. Not forgetting the locals who were all chatting to us and made us feel welcome. If I’m ever in the area again I’ll 100% be going back

The service from Aaron was fantastic. Food was good but fairly expensive for the area (£18-22 for most mains). Two of our group were vegetarian and were disappointed that there were only a couple of vegetarian options on the main menu and not a single vegetarian special (on a board of about 4-6 specials). The micro-Zoo at the back was a really nice touch and great if you have kids. If the menu was more balanced for diverse dietary requirements it would have been a 5 star review.

Whilst on our Christmas camper travels, we stumbled upon this amazing pub and restaurant. As soon as we stepped through the door, we were welcomed with a smile. The staff were so friendly, service great and the food was fantastic. We were lucky to get a huge sofa by the fireplace, which was roaring when we arrived, so our dogs Albert & Dolly were also so happy to sit next to after a long day walking. There is also lots of wonderful art around the whole building, which you can purchase and a zoo in the back garden (yes, that's right). If you are travelling through or staying close by, then make sure you pop in as you will not be disappointed.

Breakfast was delicious and big portions. We also went for dinner and got steaks and they were amazing. Fillet had so much flavour and chips were actually hand cut, you can tell everything is made fresh.

The food is good, but not as good as some other local places, but they did make changes to adjust my meal to allow for food allergy, which was very much appreciated. The service was great, positioning is awesome, and they have a little zoo out back, which was a real pleasure to explore. Inside the artwork around is glorious - a very nice place to stop and have a meal and and explore.

Had a lovely pre Christmas meal with family. The belly pork was the best I've ever had and the gravy was superb.

Great size Sunday meals 1 beef, 1 lamb. The vegetables were cooked well and plentiful. Service was attentive. Excellent oubtof meat and gravy. 2 points to take away: cold plates and tepid food; only 1 roast potato- stingy. This can be offset I guess by mash however 1 roastie was a bit poor

Had a lovely meal in this dog friendly pub last night. Dogs are welcome In the bar area downstairs. Good menu choice and very difficult to pick what to have, in the end I went for the linguine with prawns and chorizo and my partner had faggots, which was one of the daily specials. The portion sizes when they came out were fantastic and the food was simply delicious. I also ordered a side of the garlic bread and this was like a pizza! Staff were really friendly and attentive and we couldn’t have asked for a nicer meal in a lovely welcoming pub. Will definitely try to come back before the end of our holiday. As I always say when I love somewhere, I wish this was my local. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Myself and partner booked a table here for last night 02.11.2024. We got there little earlier and was shown to our table, out drunk order was taken and delivered to table with in minutes. My partner ordered the sea bass but didn't want the veg and mash. The accommodated him with chips and I ordered the chuck steak burger. Food came piping hot and plenty of it. Service was fantastic and nothing was to much trouble. Will call again.

Lovely cosy restaurant, with tasteful decor, wood fire, delicious food and excellent selection of real ale, but the absolute best thing about this place are the staff - each and every one of them was exceptionally friendly, helpful professional. They were delightful. Extra note for veggies - the nut roast on a Sunday is a really good one 👌🏻

The food was great. But the portion size wasn't quite what I thought it would be for the price. The service was spot on though and the food tastes great.

We looked at the menu online, before we arrived and the menu we were presented with at the table, was very different with far fewer choices! My chicken was inedible as it was so salty, tough and stringy. The other menu choices made by our group were disappointing and over priced. I certainly won't be visiting here again to be "ripped off"!

Very poor Sunday roast dinner. Lamb overcooked, one roast potato and half a roast parsnip. Some of the other vegetables were undercooked. Mint sauce just vinegar with a small amount of mint floating in it. Very disappointing

Fantastic food, fantastic service

We went there 2 days in a row and were received with the same enthusiasm, the same empathy and the same kindness with a different team! The (historical) setting is really very nice and the food is good with very reasonable prices and wise and relevant advice. Alas no Guinness on tap.

Very nice food but hellish expensive for what we had. Sunday carvery pudding and a few beers for 4 adults and a child £250.

Staff were so accommodating and took time to talk to us. They also made us a cocktail that wasn’t on the menu at our request. Great people 👏

Stopped here by Chance whilst on a Long Road-Trip. Ordered 2 almost identical Baguettes for Lunch. Without Exaggeration; it took about 45 minutes for the food to come! They weren't busy either! The Food was Absolutely DELICIOUS!! QUALITY Ingredients used! Tried to book for Sunday Lunch (travelling 20 miles each way); but they were Fully Booked!!

Very nice location , nice and very educated staff , we stayed also over night in a very welcoming room , but the food wasn't what i expected, and i believe can be improved, the steak could be better ,not the best quality of meat ,in my opinion two star for steak, the salad also can be improved, the chef put 2 or 3 leaves of salat with 2 tomatoes and that's the salad , thank you.

I spent a few hours here today. I sat on the couches by the bar. It was quiet as most were outside or eating upstairs and I had a peaceful and relaxing time. I ordered a ham baguette which was prepared and served promptly and was delicious. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Food was lovely, but we were not told that instead of garlic bread with our 3 x lasagne we would get a single substitute bowl of chips for 3 of us to share when we had already ordered a bowl of chips as a side. Doesn't take much to: a) ask if we would be ok with another bowl of chips or something else. b) This place is expensive (£20 for pub lasagne) so substitutions aren't really what you would expect without some sort of lip service to say sorry or offer something else. But the lasagne itself was very good and tasty, strong flavours.

Very lovely atmosphere in the resteraunt. The waitress gave us the perfect amount of time for me and my friend to decide what we wanted. The little zoo was just phenomonal, such a unique place in a lovely, quiet, and beautifully secluded area.

Lucky to have this place on the doorstep... A beautiful venue run by, wonderful staff. Great food and drink. A cozy place in the winter and stunning beer garden for the dry days and summer. My niece had her wedding reception here also a few years back...it was fantastic. A huge added bonus are the feathered and furry friends out back in their mini-zoo! Handy...a community gated park next door for the kids too! What more could you ask for? If youre reading this...Get over there...as soon as you get chance!! Highly recommend x
