Pennyroyal in Cardiff

I hosted my 30th at Pennyroyal in their private function room. The atmosphere and setting is fantastic but unfortunately I did not have a great experience. As a private party, we were not allowed to order at the bar and were told that someone would come and take our orders. There were about 30 people in the room and roughly half of those managed to get a drink in the three hours that we were there. I went to the bar three times and was told someone would come to take my order… when someone did come eventually, they took my order and our drinks never arrived. From what I hear, the cocktails that the lucky few did manage to snag were lovely, but I cannot personally confirm! It would be a great birthday venue if the service was better… also considering we had a minimum spend, it was touch and go whether we were actually able to spend enough to meet that! We could have spent much much more!

Some of the best cocktails around! Creative and perfectly balanced. Bartenders are very knowledgeable and happy to make off-menu drinks too.

Jordan (bartender) was really helpful knowledgeable and good helping our friends pick out cocktails for an upcoming event, no bother at all making other cocktails not on the menu and mocktails too. One staff member was very new I think and she was less great with customer service but everyone else was really lovely. Drinks around £10 to £14 (£7 for mocktails). The atmosphere was chill and comfortable despite being 8pm on a busy Saturday in Cardiff, it wasn't too crammed and staff were great. They have a lot of vegan options e..g they use vegan foamer, and oat milk, although limited chocolately-type cocktails.

Excellent cocktails, they really know their stuff. Didnt have music too loud either which was great, nice chilled atmosphere where you can have a conversation with your group. Mocktails available as well.

OMG! This is possibly the best cocktail bar in Cardiff if not the UK, so welcoming and such delicious cocktails! Would defo recommend!

I’m visiting. Liam the owner served me on a Monday night. This gent really cares about the service and the drinks. A true artist. I knew when I told him my alcohol intolerances and he responded with excitement that something was different. Unknown to the staff, I have VIP status at a few city bars. I was treated so well, as standard. It’s very rare that I leave a review on a bar. The location is great. The environment is on its way up. The drinks and the service moved me to review.

Me and two friends visited Pennyroyal on a very hot eve in June. The owner served and he was super helpful, making personalised recommendations - which turned out to be SO delicious. He also shewed away some blokes who were making unwelcome advances, without being asked, which was so so nice and unusual. You should absolutely go here for cocktails in Cardiff 😍

I visited Cardiff for several days and ended going here both nights because it was so good. The cocktails are not only fantastic, but unique and often made with homemade and locally sourced mixers. Liam and Alex gave incredible service and are the most knowledgeable bartenders I've ever met. Cannot recommend this place enough!

A great cocktail bar with some lovely drinks. I particularly liked the Kiss My Dragon. Some really interesting and tasty cocktails. I can’t wait to go back

It doesn't take long to work out the team here is passionate about their craft. They are a bar that focuses on the actual cocktail and their ingredients. I felt very looked after as they wanted to get you the right cocktail. Don't come here if you want a flamboyant peacock cocktail that is all show and no substance. The tunes, were also very good.

Wonderful cocktails, went in when it was a little quiet and were very well treated. Staff recommended some fantastic custom cocktails and gave us tips for where to go and what to see in the local area.

Changed over the years. More money making than the atmosphere. Staff are great but it’s not longer a bespoke experience. Just come in, have a beer and a cheap shot. Play pool and enjoy. Shame!!

A great little bar, very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff. Tried a few Japanese whiskies on their recommendation and we had a lovely time ....... but! We went there as it was advertised as a "speakeasy", its not! It's a lovely bar but not the speakeasy atmospheres we were looking for.

Not right for what we were after. Cocktails served with ice and nothing else in a plastic beaker for 11 quid a pop. Cocktails were average. Uncomfortable seating, disappointing.

The waiter at the pastor restaurant sent me over for a drink, and, well, this was an excellent choice… The bartender was super on top of things and very accommodating! Highly recommended…

Lovely grown up cocktail bar. Staff are hugely knowledgeable and will make you whatever you want, but don't skip the menu which has some really interesting stuff in it. Alex made me a superb caperberry martini, exactly what I wanted even though I didn't know it. Will definitely be back

HUGE WARNING! There have been a fair few 1 star reviews about staff stealing from customers, which have seemingly been removed. I know this as there was one posted yesterday, and the week before, as I had personally seen them, and experienced the same issue myself! This behaviour is HUGELY ALARMING in itself! This will be reported to google, as they are falsifying reviews. BE WARNED

Staff were very pleasant tonight even with the bar being busy nonstop with our large company working party there.. be it for cocktails or a stiff drink or even a simple lemonade, quality & a smile 😊.. The music was nice but a bit too loud for a bar, couldn't hear person standing next to one another... Will recommend a visit on a regular non corporate party day/evening 🙂

We were visiting friends in Cardiff who suggested Pennyroyal for drinks. Our visit turned into an amazing evening and Pennyroyal is certainly one of the best bars we have visited. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming and the drinks are fantastic. A massive thank you to the team for making us all feel comfortable and making sure we had a brilliant night.

Friendly staff, nice atmosphere and great drinks

So I booked a back room in Pennyroyal about 6 weeks prior to a 21st birthday celebration, I was excited to have the back room for my friends and I so I went in a few days prior to check it out and they said we couldn’t go in which was fine, until we went to our booking several days later only to be told we can’t use the room as the weather had “damaged the ceiling”. We were told this AFTER we arrived and we’re given some tables at the back of the bar which was not at all private, they said at some point they darken the lights and louden the music but the lights kept being weirdly turned up and down and the music was too much of a mix between genres (which makes it difficult to want to dance to the songs). I’m mainly so disappointed that I wasn’t informed prior to the booking that the back room was not in use for now. To make it worse, we haven’t had severe rain in about a week which means they’ve had plenty of time to contact me and let me know. I emailed during the week just to double check everything was ok but received no response, and just an automated email about my booking the night before. Aside from this, the drinks were incredibly expensive and of course just filled with ice, some of us couldn’t even fit our whole drink into one cup because their cups are tiny. The place is a cool concept and the staff are lovely, but I won’t be going back in a hurry due to the disappointment of no communication.

A pretty woke and forward-thinking bar with incredibly nice staff. Just reading the house rules alone will give you a good impression of the kind of place you’re in. Drinks were good too

It's not the cheapest, but it's 100% worth what they charge. All my best nights out end here for a nightcap. Ask them what they want to make and drink that. You won't regret it.

Brilliant experience. Fantastic atmosphere, great service from the staff and amazing cocktails. Expensive drinks but worth it for the quality and the ambiance. If recommend getting a bowl of their super large olives with your drinks as they make for an excellent pallet cleanser. Also, unless your plan on getting hammered don't order too many drinks too quickly as they are very potent! Highly recommended night out.

Booked a table and arrived early to be seated inside… music was so loud we couldn’t hear each other speak. Asked to move outside, which they did but had to watch the doorman swooning over all the young girls… not pleasant! Service was slow so didn’t order another drink. They even charges us the £10 holding fee.

Love this place!! Second time here and the drinks are absolutely 100% top class 👌 People who work here are a joy to be around!!

Best cocktail place in Cardiff. If you love good booze - these booze wizards will help you have a great evening. Very informal place. You can wear jeans, you can wear a hoodie, none of this judgemental pseudo-fancy cocktail bar vibe that I absolutely hate. Also very decent music.

We had an absolutely brilliant night at Pennyroyal last Saturday. We had a booking from 9-11pm but luckily for us there was a cancellation and we were able to stay until closing! The cocktails were amazing and actually tasted like alcohol, rather than the sugary, watered down ones you often get served 🙄. I really loved the effort they had put into their menu and liked reading about the origin of the different cocktails on offer (an extensive list!) The waitress who served us was lovely, really friendly (I didn't catch her name but it said Mummy on the receipt, and I think she was wearing a rust coloured shirt with black trousers?) as were all the other members of staff who seemed genuinely happy to be there...even though it was a super busy bank holiday Saturday, and only the 2nd week bars were able to open indoors! One of our party doesn't drink alcohol and when we asked the waitress she said they would happily make mocktail versions of any of the cocktails for her 😊. All in a fab evening! Thanks 👍

Booked in the week to go here for last night they sent me a email in the morning confirming my booking only to turn up and turned away say they over booked

Great cocktails and Great staff! Have frequented this bar many times and every visit is a new taste sensation experience. The new menu Extract is fantastic and if you go you must try the Tea Punch. Honestly it's one of the best drinks I have ever had.

Excellent service especially with COVID restrictions. Alex the Owner/Main waiter was excellent with his presentation, explanation and presentation of our cocktails and gave us a very personalised and bespoke services which we our party really appreciated!!!! Thank you Penny Royal

Upon walking into the venue I knew I would be in for a fantastic evening, the staff are knowledgeable, the drinks are out of this world and the incredibly built menu is to die for. By all means if you want to treat your tastebuds and experience something fresh and new then this is a place to go.

Outstanding selection of some of the worlds best whiskey, rum, gin etc. Staff with absolute expert knowledge of all the drinks. They knew all about location of origin, cask types and how they were created. Enabling them to reccomend drinks based on what your preferences are..... I will be back. With paracetamol in my rear pocket!!

Great it was a Wednesday night so it was dead but the bar guys made it seem like it wasn't. Delicious drinks and a fantastic atmosphere.

Kyle and Dan were very welcoming last night had some great drinks sat at the bar, had no idea what I wanted and they whipped up a couple of fantastic drinks for me great evening highly recommend Definitely be visiting again cheers guys!

Discovered this little treasure about 6 months ago and go everytime I'm out drinking in Cardiff. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about cocktails, you can order off menu or just tell them what spirits you like and they will bring you something. There is security on the door and it's table service so your guaranteed a seat every time. Would definitely recommend and have taken visiting friends in for a cheeky drink. The cocktails are a bit more expensive but for me it's worth paying the extra if you know there going to be good.

Amazing cocktails, we were a group of 4 and ended up trying 13 cocktails amongst us, only posted photos for a couple as I want to leave some surprises, each were incredible, and still so many more cocktails left on the menu to try next time we visit. Our server Ben was wonderful, telling us the story that came with each cocktail with wit and panache. If you are in Cardiff definitely go here!

I love a pretentious cocktail that can back up it's promise. I've had an experience there where the staff where the waiting staff were way too much, but this was a one off. My favourite thing about Pennyroyal is how well they make some old school favourites. They make a right hand and a French pedal that rival milk and honeys.These guys really know their business

Stopped off at Pennyroyal on a work night out. 12 of us and the gentlemen behind the bar were brilliant. Sorted us out with a table so we could all sit together. Tailored our drinks to exactly what we wanted. Very impressed with the staff, bar and menu. Highly recommend to anyone.

I have been to PennyRoyal countless times and never has the standard of service or drinks dropped below perfect. Alex the owner is one of the most knowledgeable barmen I have ever come across and is always willing to give some background on the liqueur or origination of the drink itself and will cater to any taste or style, whether it's on the menu or not. The bar environment is comfortable and relaxed, with a real vibrant vibe in the evenings. If you're looking for quality drinks, I truly could not recommend a place more highly in Cardiff!

A wide range verity of cocktails with a funky big unique menu and a nice descriptions about the all the cocktails/ drinks. Great place to visit. Please try "Horus" the cocktail if you are Keen for a scotch based one.

More expensive then other cocktail bars, but premium strength. Great selection, quite different selection to the other cocktail bars close by. I enjoyed the drinks here. Very strong, different choices to the alchemist and the Libertine.... Both of these are also good..... If you fancy a different type of cocktail and like a strong drink then this is the place for you
