Just had a takeaway from here for the first time and it was absolutely superb, tasted so fresh; nan bread was really nice and the rice excellent. Chicken bhuna had a lovely spice to it. I would say this is our favourite and we’ve tried most of the Indian takeaways in Durham.

Food amazing as always, always tastes unbelievably fresh, you can taste the fresh herbs, definitely our go to & has been since we discovered it.

Visited this lovely restaurant early on an evening and the food was authentic and great value for money .The squid and prawn starters were excellent. Service was good. Would definitely return .

Absolutely disgusting customer service, complained about the chicken chatt not being a usual chicken chatt that I am used too, no fluffy bread n dry as sticks! To be talked down to by the manager, said he dosnt know where I have gone in the past but they are the best! Really!! I have been to many Indian restaurants and never come across anything like these people, not nice at all, Save your money don’t go there!!! Didn’t even get to the main meal🤢

Nicest Indian restaurant we’ve been too in so long ( can’t actually remember how long tbf). Service was brilliant, food was lovely and drinks were lovely as expected! Would highly recommend and looking forward to returning for a meal again!

When we stayed last time, the restaurant was closed, but the chef rustled up a superb meal that we ate in the bar. We had been looking forward to choosing from the full menu and were not dissapointed. Lovely authentic and tasty food, friendly & prompt service and good atmosphere. Just a pity that it's 260 miles from where we live.

Extremely pathetic food. Even not fresh. Onion baji was refried and had been extremely salty, alu bhaji was sweet, chatni had artificial colour and not like the indian mint chutni. Alu ticki was extremely dry very salty andnot edible. Please avoid at every cost

We ordered a takeaway tonight, which was inedible. The onion baji was far to dry and salty. The lamb madras, lamb was just fat and gristle, the sauce was so salty. The chicken tikka starter didn’t taste of much. We will never order from them again. Worst takeaway we have ever had. It all went in the bin.

We were staying local to this restaurant. This is a pub/hotel with the restaurant on the premises. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was superb. A little gem of a place and well worth the visit. We will definitely be going again next time we are in Durham.

We have had a few take always from here and none of them have disappointed. Tonight’s was amazing! Best Indian we have had. The lamb was beautiful. Highly recommend. Thanks so much. We will be back soon!

I love my Indian food and often go out, never have I had the most amazing quality and tasting food!! I can't say anymore other then always amazing and has to be the best that I've been to.

1st time back since covid started and really missed the meals here great welcome back from the owner and appreciated . Food as always authentic full of flavour and freshly cooked 3 courses later know why we missed it.

Visited Penash on the Saturday evening as a group of 12 with all pre-orders sent in advance. Service was excellent but even of higher quality was the food itself. The curry based dishes contained very plentiful pieces of meat / prawns but combined in sauces that were amongst the best i have ever eaten at home or abroad. So nice to see a more traditional curry with meat and a gravy and not filled with unnecessary flavours or ingredients to bulk it up. Absolutely outstanding.

I have visited twice for take away food and all I can say is that the food is outstanding quality and flavour. The owner is very friendly and helpful. I will look forward to my next visit.

I went here with my family for my birthday. It was excellent all round! It wasn't very busy and there was just one server working (which was understandable). He still took time to stand and talk, explain different spices and possible food combinations. We never felt rushed and he was attentive when we needed anything. The food was just outstanding. I wasn't wasting a bit of it. I was disappointed when others in my family were offered a box to take leftovers home. I didn't know this was an option, I ate every bit I could which was possibly a mistake. The food was so good, I can't wait to go back! The chicken bhuna is amazing. I'd also recommend the gulag jamun as a desert. Yum!

Penash Indian at the Croxdale Inn. We had the most amazing meal. Superb quality, generous portions, great value for money and so tasty. The menu is very different from other Indian restaurants. Ask for advice. We really over ordered so took gone a doggie bag. It's a shame we live so far away!

We were staying in the attached Croxdale Inn so made great sense to eat here especially as we like Indian food. The restaurant was very comfortable and with good service. The food choice was good and quality excellent. Our guest who lives locally but had not dined here remarked it was one of the better ones he had tried. Service was attentive and polite. Would recommend to locals.

This was my first visit to this restaurant and was pleasantly surprised. It was a table for 7 people with starters and main meals We ordered both meat and seafood platters and two chicken dishes one been chilli chicken, all where really good and good size portions.We ordered 3 mains with rice and nan breads and must say the curries were really good not the normal Indian restaurant but much more flavour and spice.This is definitely a place to try, don’t be put off with location plus free parking to rear of buildingWill be back soon

Stayed at pub so decided to stay in and eat in the Indian. Excellent chicken sagg and perfectly cooked rice. Good portion size. Very friendly staff. Highly recommended

This is a treasure, tucked away in the Croxdale Inn. Attentive staff served delicious starters of onion bhaji and chilli chicken, followed by chicken dansak, lamb jalfrezi and the crispiest coriander naan. Well recommended, this was our first time here but will not be the last.

I had a lamb madras and garlic naan, both outstanding. My starter -- a prawn puree -- was also delicious. Decent choice of drinks (a chocolate porter for me) and a dining experience that cannot be bettered. Brilliant.

We recently stayed at The Croxdale Inn and ate at this fantastic restaurant both nights. The food was amazing and the staff so friendly and accommodating. Three of us shared a meal here and the food was most delightful. When the food arrived at the table, the aroma was entrancing. While we talked about being satisfied with the fragrance, when we tasted the dishes, we were enthralled. Based on the variety of dishes we ordered, I suspect that the whole menu is spectacular. Though it is a little beyond most beaten paths, this restaurant is worth a visit.

Booked at last minute. Booking on phone and welcome on arrival friendly. Extensive menu. The usual curries available but all well described on menu. Lots of curry choices, multitude of rice choices such as garlic, onion. Variety of naan bread such as butter, coriander etc. All cooked fresh so bit of wait but well worth it. Plentiful chicken in curries and all portions generous. Food very tasty, cooked well, presented well. Service very efficient and young grntleman who served us very polite. Delicious curry, will be back!

The best lamb chop and lamb biryani I have ever had! It was very delicious. Very authentic Indian dishes. The chef and the staff were all nice and friendly. Will definitely come regularly. We stumbled in here having pulled off the A1 on a long journey and looking for somewhere to eat on a Thursday evening. Penash is sort of inside a pub called the Croxdale Inn, neither the pub or restaurant were busy when we went. There was only one member of staff working but he was friendly and helpful and seemed to be manning the pub and Indian restaurant round the other side on his own - he was great. The place is super dated, as was the music and menus etc.

We stayed in the hotel above the restaurant and used this restaurant. I love a good Indian and they are hard to find. Wish this restaurant ws closer at home as it was really nice. service was good and inside it was clean and food was super

We ate here while staying at Croxdale Inn and found it overall very good! We got the butter chicken, egg fried rice and a lamb dish...it was very tasty. Surprisingly, this was my first time ever going to an Indian restaurant and i am pleased with the experience i had. The staff were very friendly as well! They had plenty of vegetarian options as well. Would recommend.

A lovely Indian restaurant on the same premises as Croxdale Inn. 3 of us visited on a Saturday night. We were shown to our table very quickly and the waiter was very polite. Not the biggest menu but still a good range of popular starters and mains. All 3 of us ordered different dishes but ended up with the same, a nice clean plate lol. We all said how nice the food was and thanked the waiter and chef. The bill came in less than £60 including drinks for the three of us, so very reasonable priced too. Highly reccommend you give it try if staying at Croxdale.

We had dinner with friends here and the staff were a delight and the meal was spectacular. I am Indian so for me to say an Indian meal was good takes a lot. We had lamb chops which were devine and so was the Chicken Tikka. We started the meal with a taster plate and this was particularly good. If you want Good Indian then Penash is the place to go.

We were picking up our undergraduate daughter's 'stuff' and needed a night to break the journey so were staying at the Croxdale Inn. Eating there and popping our daughter into a taxi back to college was a great option and the food was gorgeous, the staff lovely - nothing to fault! Try the Penash please.

We visited the restaurant before leaving the neighbouring hotel, Croxdale Inn. The early bird offer of 5 courses for £10 was fantastic value and lived up to our expectations, as good as our local indian back home. We got popadoms and chutney, a vegetarian starter each, rice, naan and Chicken curries (Jalfrezi, Butter and tikka masala), they were all lovely. The butter and tikka were quite similar to each other. A smallish bowl at first sight but absolutely more than enough for us all and it's quality, not quantity. Everything cooked really nicely and the garlic naan is fantastic. Staff friendly and service quick, we weren't waiting long for food.

Theres just something special about this place that makes me keep wanting to come back! We visited Penash later last year and decided to come back. As walking through the entrance we were greeted by the same young lad as our previous visit and he shook all of our hands as he welcomed us back (which was a nice touch).

Looking for a new place to try for an early evening dinner, mid week, with a friend, he suggested that we try Penash; neither of us had been before but the reviews looked great. So we met, on a cold Wednesday evening, to try it. And I'll be charitable and put the quality of our experience down to just that; it was early evening on a Wednesday.

Have to say the owner and all the staff are so friendly and welcoming nothing is a bother to them.

Have parking which is great. Food average, especially considering the owner is from India I was expecting better food. Fish koliwada is recommended. Friendly staff and owner.

Dropped in without a reservation on a Saturday night with my Father and had no trouble getting a seat. Smells from the kitchen were delicious. Staff were busy but we got out drinks and food order in without too much of a wait. Waitress was very friendly and made us feel at home. The indian was freshly cooked and without food dyes which is always a good sign. Tasted delicious no chance of us leaving anything. Recommend this place to anyone you likes decent indian food and is in the area.

A good range of dishes, well cooked by the chef (from Pakistan) so good naans as well as popodoms. A friendly and reasonably quick service. Dishes not large but very acceptable. We had a fish starter that was excellent and a vegetable paneer dish that was a triumph - not too oily

Decided to dine out & fancied an Indian meal, live local but not been before, nice welcome by young man behind the bar & swiftly seated as no other diners, drinks brought to the table, had popadoms followed by lamb & chicken Karai with onion & mushroom rice, lovely meals, great service, nice atmosphere & friendly staff, my meal was a little too spicy do mention how hot you would like your meal before ordering.

Penash is the restaurant of the Croxdale Inn . It has friendly service in a smallish area . It serves very nice authentic indian food and great value. Well worth a trip outside of Durham and with easy parking , it is an easy place to visit.

I visited Penash with my husband and mother in law on a very quiet bank holiday. We were so well looked after and food was lovely and so fresh! The staff were so friendly and helpful and even the chef came to the table to talk to us, giving us lots of information on Indian food and flavours. Can't believe we've lived so near for so long and I've never been before! We will most definitely be back!!! Thank you!

I have been recommended The Penash restaurant by a few friends that have each told me how amazing this place is, and they were not wrong! I visited last weekend with a bunch of friends and the place was very busy, which made the atmosphere great! We walked through the front entrance and approached the bar were we were greeted by a very friendly young man, he served us each our drinks then we were led to the restaurant by a friendly waitress. We had popodoms, starters and mains (we couldn't fit any deserts in). The onion bajis which most of us tried were phenomenal, very large and fluffy with a hint of spice. The Lamb saag was one of the best i've tried and the onion rice and garlic naan went great with it! All in all a very fun and enjoyable night at Penash and we will be back shortly!

my second visit to the Penash.Ive eaten Indian food all over the country over the last 50 years, and never had better than this.not a vast menu, and as the website states, you have to wait a while for the food to arrive. but believe me the wait is worth it.Amazing food, excellent staff, great management.Cant imagine me going anywhere else in future.

Having read other people's reviews I decided to take a punt on going to Penash. Croxdale is not your first thought for somewhere to go out for food but it certainly will be now. The place is a combination of pub (including pool table), restaurant and rooms. As you walk in, the mix of these is initially a bit unexpected but the staff instantly make you feel welcome.As a vege you are usually guaranteed a decent choice of food at an Indian restaurant but on the whole it is usually vegetable versions of the typical curries. Chef specials tend to always be meat based. Well at Penash the menu has a whole vegetarian section with such a great choice of dishes that it flummoxed me and my partner got bored waiting for me to choose.Starters, mains and puds (mango kulfi) were all outstanding. The meal was the closest thing I have eaten in an Indian restaurant to visiting the homes of Asian friends who are fantastic creators of Asian food. You can specify the heat of any dish and the flavours were magnificent.My partner (an omnivore) had a delicious chicken dish alongside of a Peshwari Naan. The Naan was reportedly the best they had ever eaten and believe you and me they have eaten many in the process of seeking perfection.Just to add that the whole experience was added to by top class service including chef coming to speak to each table. Service was professional, of high quality but also friendly and relaxed.....a really hard combination to achieve.Well done everyone at Penash, we will be back.

Visited Penash for the first time with my wife this weekend, we were eating early (6pm) and were the first people in the restaurant, how ever there were a few people drinking in the bar area. We were greeted at the bar area by a very pleasant young man, after ordering a couple of drink he took us to our table. We were served by two very nice young ladies who were very upbeat, as though they wanted to be there and it wasn't a chore. We ordered our meal the starters were all very tasty, there was a slight problem with one of the samosas but this was removed from our bill which was a nice gesture. You get 4 mini samosas, personally I'd rather have 2 larger samosas but that is just my personal taste. The chef came out to talk to us and offered some alternative to the dish I ordered and I gladly took his advice. Both our main courses (I had a chicken dish and my wife a fish dish) were excellent. the presentation was great and the service really lovely. We will be back soon.

We were greeted with a smile and lovely welcome as we walked through the door.The restaurant is a well converted former pub tucked away on the outskirts of Spennymoor. Having eaten at the majority of Indian restaurants in Durham this is by far the best. Staff were courteous and fun and the food was excellent; The curries were well prepared and seasoned, my chicken dish melted in your mouth, it was a clearly well thought out taste. If you haven't been yet you need to...nice restaurant , great staff, fab food, well priced, what more could you ask for!

I can only say something about the quality of the food - which is superb Indian food! Best quality! Very friendly and helpful people. I have not been inside to eat, but rather asked them if they were to deliver to our house, which they did each time in a very friendly and helpful manner! - The quality of their food certainly is different than that of a normal take-away!

I'm a food development chef working for a variety of high profile company's and travell all over the UK for work, ideas, trends and inspiration.Well what can I say I was in the Durham for a week and was told by a colleague who is a massive foodie to eat at Penash @ Croxdall Inn. I can honestly say the food just BLEW me away. I ate every evening and every meal was different full of freshness and unique flavours and totally breathtaking. It would be unfair to say which was my favourite because there was no Hint of distraction from flavours,textures and spice balance is superb.I spoke to the chef about his inspirations and passions about his food and I was humbly surprised that his motivation comes from home and family. His knowledge about food is second to non and has been head- hunted by many but without success and could easily command a highest professional pedestal in the food industry. This guy is a GEM and I wish him WELL.

Fabulous food was very impressed. Lovely staff nothing too much trouble chef coming out to discuss which way you would prefer it cooked. It was a quiet Wednesday night but gets busy on a weekend. Last minute decision to go for food in couples. Called into Penash as our usual Indian restaurant isn't open on Monday. What a brilliant discovery. Staff very attentive, chef spoke to each table asking how we would like food cooked. I had a meal that wasn't on menu. Everything is cooked fresh to order so obviously a little waiting time, but freshness outweighs quickness.Lovely relaxed atmosphere, didn't feel rushed to eat and vacate the table.Excellent, food, staff and experience

A few months ago I visited friends in croxdale and we ate at Penash located inside croxdale inn, I decided to return last weekend and it was even better!You get a warm welcome as soon as you step foot in this place! A young lad called luke sat us at our table more or less without a wait which is good! He recommended me the onion bhaji as a starter which I did order, he was true to his word they were the best I've ever tasted! It was quite a busy night but the place was spotless I can't fault it whatsoever. Luke did a great job of looking after us whilst we were there but all the staff at Croxdale Inn are great and make you feel really comfortable their hospitality is excellent. I can't wait to come back.

We have eaten in this restaurant a number of times within the last few months and it never fails to amaze me! The food is consistently amazing and always served with happy, talkative staff. I have recommended this place to nearly all of my friends and will continue to do so.

We'd driven past many times and a friend had previously recommended but we'd just never found the chance to visit until tonight. It's not a massive restaurant and not an extensive menu although we were advised the chef can make other dishes if asked but I couldn't fault a single thing. Staff were friendly, attentive and helpful despite it being busy, then there's the food- all very well presented and tasted amazing, starters, mains, rice and nan- I couldn't fault a single thing. The dal ghost was possibly the nicest curry dish I've ever had and the tikka masala was fantastic. We'll certainly go back- very soon. Next time we'll leave a double tip as embarrassingly I didn't have a penny in cash on me having paid the bill on my card- huge apologies to the staff- the well deserved tip is on its way! Chance visit as staying in the hotel, friendly and attentive staff, chef came out to speak to us, brilliant recommendation and catered to our needs, made a dish that wasn't on the menu. Everything cooked to perfection, definitely recommended for any occasion! Will be back :-)

I took my mother to Penash for a birthday meal it's the first time we have been there but it won't be the last,we were greeted by a very nice man who was very friendly and wished my mother a lovely birthday,we picked our meals and were asked how spicy we would like them they were delicious when they can and the chef can to see if we were enjoying them he even asked us how long we wanted to wait in between courses we could not fault anything all food drinks staff and price were great can't wait for the next birthday to go back.

This restaurant is amazing! I eat in the restaurant a few weeks back and was extremely pleased I had to come back for a takeaway! As we arrived to the restaurant we were approached by a very welcoming young man who sat us down and looked after us throughout our meal, the staff were very polite and we even had a nice conversation with the chef about his food!

The food was great best onion bargis ever. Greeted with smile. A happy land lord always helps. But best of all was the elvis impersonator. Never seen anything like it
