Myself and my partner decided to try this cafe as a new venture. We visited on a Sunday at around lunch time, and it was very busy. We didn’t mind waiting, however staff didn’t seem to be making any extra effort to get the queue down quickly. They have seating inside, upstairs and outside but as weather wasn’t great we wanted to sit inside. We saw there was one free table however wasn’t sure if we had to wait to be seated, and out of curtesy for the person in-front of us we wanted to wait to see if they wanted to take said table. Rather than telling us we could go and sit down, one of the staff members turned around and quite abruptly asked if were were together, to which we said yes, and then told us to go and put something on the table to reserve it before someone came in to take it because they were busy, and only getting busier. Whilst I appreciate this was probably meant to be helpful, I actually found it quite abrupt and bit pushy. When we finally got to the front of the queue, half way through taking our order another member of staff came to the waitress on the till and asked to swap, which they did, but then the new waitress started totalling up our order and trying to take payment without even asking if we had finished. It took my boyfriend 3 additional attempts to complete our order, as it seemed she had no patience or manners in making sure we ordered everything, it just seemed like she wanted to serve us as quickly as possible. On top of this, I could also hear the two members of staff making hot drinks gossiping about another member of staff or customer in direct earshot of all the customers waiting in the queue. We then sat down, and had drinks and a scone brought over to us. About 15 minutes later, we saw the waitress from the till and another in the kitchen looking confused, to which she came out and shouted in-front of the whole cafe, to which everyone went silent ‘has anyone moved from that table?’ And pointed to a couple we were mid meal. Everyone said no, to which she then read out an order which happened to be ours and said ‘I’ve got you two as sat down on that table’. At this point, I felt incredibly awkward and flustered, and quite annoyed that she felt the need to do that rather than approach the other table and/or us to sort out a simple mistake. Not only that, but it felt somewhat like she was blaming us as opposed to a mistake she had made. Our food then came. Overall, the food was average at best, if not below average. The paninis lack flavour, and the scones come ready made with jam and cream inside them that have been sat in the fridge on display making them very dry, the cream hard and the jam tastes cheap. The hot drinks we had also came boiling hot, meaning we couldn’t drink them for a good 10 - 15 minutes. If this wasn’t enough, I could see the worker in the back preparing food wearing an apple watch, no apron, and I did not see her wash her hands in between handling different meals. I admit that I am not particularly knowledgable about establishment food hygiene practices as I don’t work within this sector, and they do have a food hygiene rating of 5 as of April 2022 however I could not help but feel slightly alarmed by this. Overall, I felt incredibly uncomfortable and awkward eating in this cafe and my experience only got worse the longer we stayed there. The staff need some serious training in customer service and just genuinely need to change their attitude to seem like they care for their customers as opposed to making us feel somewhat like a burden. We will not be visiting here ever again.

Been visiting Peacock over the years but not been for a few weeks now. Think staff need to take stock and avoid complacency. Coffee was very weak and poor in taste. Bacon sandwich,,, as with another recent review the bacon was marginal in quantity and quality. Pleasant staff and fabulous setting but need to improve, if I have the same experience next time I will not be back !! plenty of other options in our lovely town of Chesterfield......

I really enjoy my visits here. The place is clean, the menu varied and the food and coffee delicious. I visited 13 April for a latte and pannini which were both absolutely lovely and very reasonably priced. The staff are very welcoming and efficient, it feels as though nothing is too much trouble for them. I would recommend the Peacock to anyone wanting breakfast, lunch or just a delicious cake with their drink served in pleasant, clean surroundings by lovely attentive staff.

2 people at 10am - Simply went in for a bacon sandwich and a drink. They describe it on their board as ‘crispy bacon sandwich’. The sandwich was anaemic, lacking much bacon, made on normal white sliced bread (not fresh) but worse of all the blonde til lady was very abrupt with us and lacked friendly customer service skills. Sent the sandwich back to get crispy and they looked at it confused and loudly spoke about my polite request. Many other nicer places to go - I won’t return

We have been coming here in and off for a few years, always found it nice, good food and friendly service.e like to sit out in the courtyard in warmer weather. The upstairs area is warmer in colder weather and rather cosy. The last couple of times we have visited we have noticed a change, you have always had to find a seat then go and order and pay at the counter and that's fine, but we have noticed is when you find a table they haven't been cleared of cleaned down, there are hardly any menus(and on asking one of the waitresses her reply was you have to have a look around on one of the other tables)when good and drinks came which were really nice,I asked if they had any mayo and was told again to have a walk round there should be some on tables.I did think that was rather rude as she just walked away,I seemed to spend most of my time getting up and down looking for things,I hope things improve I know it was a little bit busy but don't think that's much of an excuse.

The space downstairs is very small and gets busy. We were told about the seating upstairs, but unfortunately my mum and dad can’t get upstairs. A table became available and we ordered some drinks. They do soya milk, which is great because I am a vegan, but there didn’t appear to be much on the menu at a glance. I’m sure they could make something if you asked. I had tea, which was fine, but everyone else had coffees (cappuccino and lattes). They said it was far too hot and the milk had been burnt and had formed a film on top of the coffee. It’s a very average place. Plenty of better places in Chesterfield to go to.

Stumbled across this on a recent visit. The building looked lovely and theirs lot of room near the counter, the lovely courtyard and upstairs with a lovely barn roof. The building is its main selling point. Upstairs there are no menus except for one on the far wall leaving you having to upset the people underneath it staring at it. Prices are ok, mainly light bites £5 and up. Had a nice jacket potato but the chicken curry filling was lovely til i got a few hard chicken pieces and the side salad was quite basic, banana milkshake had the faintest taste was frothy milk . Didn't see a kids menu but my daughter was fine with a potato, the older lady who brought out our food was so stern she had been lovely with other customers but we got food plonked down and no eye contact smile or anything, luckily its not somewhere we visit often. Also upstairs bathroom facilities were very very tight when you have a small child to take in and hard to get down stairs with a young child if they carry the food up the stairs at the same time too.

Lovely building and quite pleasant inside, there is no lift and the upstairs is difficult if you have mobility problems. I only encountered two members of staff but both were very pleasant. The downside I'm afraid was the coffe and cream scone, I had a latte which for me was much too strong and bitter and the scone was very uninspiraring. It was very cold as though it had been in the chiller cabinet for hours. The jam was strange and very lacking in fruit, no idea what flavour but it was red. I do prefer to be given the scone with the jam and cream in little pots so I can put them on myself. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again.

Visited with a friend for lunch. Because of my allergies I was only able to choose a plain jacket potato with salad which I'm happy with. The woman serving me rudely said that will be dry. I explained about my allergies & she showed me a gluten free menu. I unfortunately still was unable to have anything, adding that as well as being coeliac, I can't have dairy. She then suggested I have cheese on my potato. I asked if it was dairy free & she said no then said she didn't know what things are dairy! I really think a person that works in a food establishment should know the basics such as which food contain dairy. Shame really because it's a nice little place.

Visited here on Saturday 26th March with my family . Due to no room downstairs we had to carry our grandsons Pram upstairs, which wasn't the problem. But, once we were settled we were told that there wasn't a waitress service so, back downstairs to order the food and drink . I ordered a cheese and pepperoni panini . When it arrived it was the worst painini I've ever had, infact my glasses case was bigger. It couldn't have been any flatter if it had been rolled over by a steam roller. The filling was the smallest ever..... Five of the smallest ,thinnest pieces of pepperoni I've ever had . The panini was about 2.5 inches wide and the cheese didn't even cover the width of the bread!. Talk about thin, the chees must have been cut with a razorblade. It's the first time that I've left an eating place hungry, and the cobwebs hanging in the corner of the room would put any Halloween party to shame. The place is all front and no filling. Met friends for lunch here. The downstairs coffee lounge is quite small and crowded, so we went upstairs for lunch. This is the downside. You order your food and drink at the counter which is downstairs, then to get upstairs you have to go outside, across a covered yard, up some very steep stairs and into the restaurant area. Not good for the less mobile, and a bit of a pain if you want another drink or more food as you have to go down, and back across the yard, into the other building where the counter is. You pay (cash only) as you order, but the food and drink is brought to you. The hot drinks were hot, which was good, and so was the food, delicious paninis. The staff were very pleasant. We sat in the comfortable surroundings for over 2 hours catching up with our friends and we were never made to feel we ought to move on It was our first visit, but won't be our last.

Visited this coffee shop for lunch, and we were really disappointed. They had sold out of jacket potatoes, so the only other 'meals' were bread based - Panini or Sandwich. My mother in law struggles to eat bread, but opted for a Panini, as did my husband - I have never seen such thin, small Panini's! The salad garnish looked a bit pathetic and like it had just been thrown onto the plates. For the price, it was a very disappointing lunch, and we won't be going back again.

Had a really lovely cosy time in this well sized coffee shop considering it it a medieval building (OPENED BY DIANA) HRH, we was served very quick with a smile, good coffee, they have a upstairs and also the cups are pretty large so you get a good amount for your money. Didnt try the food but from what i saw it looked really nice, there hygiene rating was also 5***** rating too. I would go back if i ever go the chesterfield again.

Pleasant staff and a good range of food on offer. The only drawback was the cold from the door as a lot of visitors did not shut it behind them or stood having a conversation in the open doorway.

On a recent shopping trip to Chesterfield I went for a light lunch to The Peacock Coffee Lounge. The atmosphere in this very old building with oak beams was very pleasing. Varied menu with Jacket potatoes, panninis and baguettes. I ordered from the specials board a hot turkey and stuffing baguette complete with salad and it was delicious with a cup of fresh ground coffee. Good value at about £6.

We live in Sheffield and visit Chesterfield on a regular basis on market days.We use this little restaurant because of the quality of the food and the good quality coffee served by the nice friendly staff. they have a nice courtyard outback which is nice in summer and the indoor area is always warm and inviting.

I have lived in Chesterfield for 4 years and often thought how lovely this coffee shop looks from outside but never been inside. I have no idea why? A friend suggested we meet there for coffee today and she also recommended the custard slice. I now find myself in a position where I can recommend people try this place (and I can also recommend the custard slice!)

We spotted this rather nice looking coffee shop on our recent visit to Chesterfield. Looks lovely from the front, looked nice inside and had a rather nice seating area at the back. Ordered coffees, scone and cake at the counter and a very nice lady said she would bring it out. The scone was very good, the coffee OK but the cake was a bit odd, not sure if i liked it or not. the toilets although very clean were tiny and i had to lean over the loo to reach the paper towels and wait as there was only one ladies, which seemed odd as it is not a small place.

Very nice building matched by the service and product. Having not been to Chesterfield before I had no idea were to get a lunch time snack. I asked a market trader who told me about this lovely place. If you ever visit this town please go to peacock coffee shop, you won't be disappointed.

A great coffee shop in the Market area of Chesterfield. Snacks and coffee were very good, the service prompt and friendly, with a fine atmosphere. As an American touring around this is the place to stop if shopping at the Chesterfield market.

Nice coffee, very quiet little place. It's not the kind of place I felt comfortable to have a chat with my friends. It was mostly full of older people.

We have been to this café a few times. It is usually busy with a good atmosphere. It is a lovely old building. I was disappointed with my coffee. I ordered a cappuccino but it was more of a watery coffee with froth on the top. The coffee tasted ok but it just didn't have the texture. My husband's flat white coffee was scolding hot. The vanilla slice was delicious. All in all a pleasant place to stop but I would hope for better coffees next time.

how can a business that gets 5 star hygiene rating and be shown as a best practice by chesterfield council / food standards agency in a magazine possibly use a bleach to clean tables ?!!! this coffee shop is fantastic and it looks to me that someone is either a competitor or just a chancer wanting a free meal!!

I can't believe how malicious some people can be. I am a regular customer of peacocks, and having once been in the same trade I know for a fact they would not use bleach to clean the tables. It is not allowed. Also the council do regular spot checks and this includes inspection

My friend and I went for lunch. We ordered 2 paninis. We sat down at a dirty table a member of staff offered to clean it. She sprayed the table/jacket and off she went. After waiting half an hour it was plain to see they had forgot our order so we had to tell them. They gave us ONE free drink as an apology for our next visit. When going home I noticed my £78 jacket had bleach on the arm where she had sprayed it. IM STILL WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM THE OWNER ABOUT IT!! Disgraceful

Great place to stop and refuel when shopping in Chesterfield. It's always busy but the service is usually fast and friendly and coffee good and hot. Not a place really to linger for a chat as there is always someone with an eye on your table but other than that I always end up here when in town.

Great little coffee shop/cafe at the bottom side of the Market square. The coffee is very good and they operate a loyalty card for this and their pricing is very reasonable. They serve great bacon sandwiches and the terrace outside at the rear of the building is excellent on a fine day. Would certainly recommend.

Always freshly made very friendly service lovely little cafe. Home made scones, cakes and biscuits are a real treat.

Lovely service. You'll need a toothpick after eating their steak—it's dry, overcooked, and overpriced. The tapas didn't really resemble authentic Spanish cuisine; they were just small dishes.

This place has always been reliable to meet anyone and everyone's needs, however I was shocked to notice every seat, table, floor and wall space, and quietness that echoed from the sound of just two other people's loudness despite being silent.
