OX Cave in Belfast

Dined out with my wife tonight in OX having the 6 course tasting menu and pairing wines. The food was of an excellent standard and the accompanying wines were very well matched. Our waiter was attentive and knowable. No complaints except on one issue....the size of the portions. Come on OX! You're having a laugh!! Yes I'm a self confessed foodie in my 60's and had a fair share of 'tasting menus' in my time but never have I left a restaurant hungry after one such menu. Your portions are miniscule. Again, great taste and quality but when one leaves your restaurant hungry after six courses the price you're charging does create a bitter after taste. Not value for a great deal of hard earned money in my humble opion. Cheers.

Have been for a wine tasting. Wonderfully hosted and delicious accompaniments served. Ox restaurant, which opened previously, is Michelin Starred. This is one of the joys of eating out in Belfast.

Extensive list of wines available by the glass, lovely friendly space to relax in. The Sicilian white wine is particularly good.

We wanted a quick and relaxed wine bar meal. Ox Cave delivered. Our waiter had some great wine by the glass recommendations to compliment our appetizers.

Se ofrecen menús de degustación de 4 (50) o 6 (60) platos con vinos combinados. El plato principal era chateaubriand cocido a medio raro. Se ofrecieron aperitivos interesantes que fueron anunciados por el servidor. Los vinos combinados también fueron interesantes, ya que incluían un blanco de Chipre y un delicioso tinto húngaro que realmente combinaba bien con la carne.El servicio fue excelente ya que la Cueva no estaba ocupada. Las tapas de las mesas no estaban cubiertas de lino, pero eran adecuadas, aunque un poco desnudas.Volveremos

Nice place, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff. Seated and tall tables available. Some natural wines. Some choice and high end options as well. Pickled Irish herrings were tasty, though could do with a little more sourdough bread.

Llegamos al restaurante Ox para las 8 pm. La mesa no estaba lista, así que aconsejé ir y sentarse en la cueva de al lado. Pedimos 2 cócteles. Un fizz de ruibarbo y un pisco sour. Estos fueron los peores cócteles que he tenido. El fizz de ruibarbo era plano y carecía de sabor y el pisco sour extrañamente sabía a plátanos y no era amargo en lo más mínimo.Dándome una patada por no mencionar en ese momento, ya que era completamente inaceptable y a cada 10 era un robo puro.La habitación también estaba vacía, con 3 miembros del personal detrás del bar bromeando y riendo a carcajadas sin que uno de ellos nos vigilara. Dejamos las bebidas en la mesa ya que no pudimos aguantarlas para terminarlas.

This is a fantastic little place if you love your wine. The staff are knowledgeable, patient and welcoming. They also serve some excellent if not a small range of beers. The various different cheeses and tapas are marvellous with the suggested wines. A true treat for the taste buds. There was also a bit of live music which was good but a bit loud for the space. This all could be very pretentious but it is done so well that it is carried off brilliantly. Great ambiance and I will definitely be back.

We stopped off for a spot of lunch and weren’t disappointed. Magda served us great wine with a meat and cheese board platter while we were there. Great atmosphere and definitely worth a visit .

Ox cave had a lovely atmosphere. Good selection of wines and list of cocktails. Staff very polite. Part of the Ox restaurant and nice to have pre dinner cocktails.

Some really nice alternative touches on the drinks menu. Enjoyed our visit! We had some craft beers and kombucha. Would definitely return.

This is going to be a short review. We popped in for pre-dinner drinks as we were eating at OX next door. Decor is great and we were looked after as soon as we arrived but the heat in the place is unbelievably oppressive. If it was under 28c I’d be surprised, more like 30c+ with the ceiling grilles pumping out stuffy hot air. I had no more layers to take off so we simply had to leave. Shame.

Only stopped in for a quick drink but very impressed. The decor is spot in and very atmospheric. Great selection on the drinks menu with friendly service. We will no doubt be back.

A lovely bright and yet old style bar with old school high tables. Very cosy & comfortable. Great selection of Gins, so I went for Berthas revenge, perfect tonic pairing. Spot on.

Realmente me gustó el ambiente en este lugar, nos sentimos muy bienvenidos inmediatamente. La ayuda con la elección del vino fue excelente, bien de precio y con muchas opciones. El queso, el pan y los bocaditos eran encantadores pero difíciles de calibrar al hacer el pedido. La próxima vez sabremos cuánto necesitamos pedir. ¿Podría ser mejor preguntar por primera vez si quieren "comer" o simplemente quieren un mordisco? Espero que sea útil = pero definitivamente regresaría. Buena música también.

Great staff and knowledge. Not scared to lead or be listened to. Nice to be able to gain some information about the food and drinks rather than some service with attitude and arrogance. Great selection of wines but would love to see even more choice as I'm sure they have the customers who would try them. Belfast needs somewhere where you can get decent wines rather that the usual supermarket stuff.

Nos encontramos con este wine bar/restaurante mientras caminando de regreso a nuestro hotel. La decoración es muy moderna e industrial y de inmediato me hizo pensar que era diferente de los otros bares y restaurantes que habíamos encontrado en Belfast.

Found this place during a walk in Belfast. Good selection of wines and service was absaloutly 110%. Been there few times after that and always perfect. Excelent for bottle of red accompanied with cheese selections.

The wines are as delicious as you might hope and the appetisers were similarly delicious. Great quality and a cool, chilled atmosphere.

Group outing for a friend's birthday. I had the 5 course tasting menu with wine pairing. A real treat. The food was exceptional and the wine a perfect complement. 3 out of the 5 dishes stand out; the celeriac, trompette with autumn truffle; finnebrogue venison, and the caramelised apple with fig leaf ice cream. In addition, the petit fours were superb.

What a phenomenal wine bar and with some great perks ... olives and cheese !! Staff are excellent and the owner Alain is a great guy !! We will be back again !!

Después de cenar en OX, aparecimos a un buey Cave para una bebida después de cenar y café. Como OX, el servicio era excelente y nos quedamos impresionados con la carta de vinos y la calidad del café. Tuvimos la suerte de coger el fin de la música en vivo y fue un final totalmente para nuestra noche.

Wd paramos en el buey Cave en sábado después de ver que el restaurante ox tenía un lugar más informal al lado. En primer lugar, sólo tienen una licencia de restaurante, así que puede parecer como un bar, tienes algo de comer.

I attended a food and wine pairing evening where the hostess, Mine displayed an exceptional pallet and understanding of what wines went with what food e.g. pairing a rose with a French ham sausage; an Irish cheese with cumin seeds with a Shiraz. Outstanding.

Ox Cave is a great experience if you are into good wine, fine cheeses and interesting nibbles. Live music at the weekends is unobtrusive and a pleasant background. staff are very knowledgeable and will guide you to great selections and pairing.

Food was lovely although there wasn't much of it! Was taken for a celebratory lunch but wouldn't choose to go back.... I have given it a good score though as it was lovely food - just don't go on a completely empty stomach!

If you are planning to dine at the ox, stop into the ox cave for a glass of bubbly and a nibble while you wait.

Perfect for any occasion - I enjoyed an evening at the Ox Cave with a friend drinking wine and snacking on their delicious cheeses/olives/ meats. The atmosphere is very causal yet has a luxury feel. The waiters are very knowledgeable about the drinks being served and aren't afraid to tell you the background and ingredients in each.Suitable for a romantic night out, or a catch up with a friend, or family occasion.

What a fantastic restaurant with a young team and great personal service. Suggest by one of my guests who knew the place and he didn't said too much. Perfect combination of taste, excellent wines and personal service. My complements to this young team and their Michelin star, they should go for their second but maintain this atmosfere. The food was An explosion of tast and color combinations, perfect presented and right portions. Thanks OX, coming back next time.

We visited Ox Cave last weekend after meaning to go for a long time and were not disappointed! We were so impressed with both the staff, the food and the selection of wines available. Fabian (I think that's his name!) our waiter, was brilliant and a real example of 5 star service. He even moved us to a nice window seat without having to ask and was so knowledgeable, especially when it came to the cheese and wine pairing. He was informative without being pretentious and you can tell what a high level of training all the staff have. Yes, it's on the expensive side but in my opinion, it's totally worth it. You get what you pay for and the staff really look after you so it's a lovely treat. We'll definitely be back, thanks for a great night!

Ox Cave, next door to sister restaurant Ox, has an extensive wine menu, a lengthy gin menu, and serves a few other drinks. Also cold tapas and cheese. All very nice, all quite expensive. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. There is live music at times. You can reserve tables - although I can't quite understand why people do - to drink wine and nibble cheese? Its all a wee bit pretentious, but if you're happy to overlook that a decent spot to while away an hour.

Found this place by accident when my husband and I were staying in the nearby Hilton. We went in late evening for a glass of wine and some cheese. Lovely atmosphere, fantastic service. Mine was a fantastically welcoming host - she displayed a great combination of real interest and knowledge of wine without being a 'wine snob'. If I lived in Belfast I would be a regular visitor - go and try it.

I had to write a review about this beautiful wine bar and sing Mine's praises. I almost felt that I was visiting a friend's place as she was so welcoming, helpful and informative. My boyfriend and I visited Cave two evenings in a row. Mine suggested wonderful wine based on what we usually drink and we were not disappointed. We opted for the cheese and wine tasting on our second visit and it was delicious. I will recommend Cave to my friends and hope to return on our next visit to Belfast. Thanks, Mine.

You will never have cheese in any other restaurant after you have eaten here. We now have dinner and head here for the best part of the night, the wine and cheese is out of this world. With expert knowledge on the various cheeses you eat. The service is also second to none! Beautiful ambience with the live music on a Saturday too. Just go!!!

This place was fantastic, really knowledgable and friendly staff. The cheese was to die for and some was locally sourced. The wine was incredible and matched with each cheese by our server, who also gave us information about each cheese and the wine, including flavours and origin. Anything we disliked would have been changed for us. Good value for money as everything was of excellent quality. Highly recommend this little gem, will definitely be back!

We recently visited Ox Cave before and after a visit to Ox restaurant next door. I had emailed in advance that my party of four would be visiting. Mine looked after us and kept a table for us. As we were about to experience the five course tasting menu next door we did not have any food but we all sampled the delicious ShortCross gin with beautiful botanicals. After our meal we returned to the Cave and sampled some more of the gin menu. We also enjoyed the live music. The atmosphere was lovely with a nice crowd in and excellent service.Whilst we visited in conjunction with our trip to Ox we will definitely be back soon and we will sample some of the food. This is a rather hidden gem in the city and whilst more people should know about it I hope it doesn't get too busy!! This was a real discovery for us!

We made complete gluttons of ourselves by slipping into Ox Cave one evening after a visit to the restaurant. A really romantic chilled out wine bar with excellent cheese selection. Staff could talk to you all day about the various cheeses and wines. So knowledgeable and interesting. Love it. Thank you.

Pre- and/or post-prandial drinks spot for its sister restaurant OX next door. Small and cosy with expensive drinks. Nothing really special about this place at all.

Attended a business function here, which really was a superb event. The venue is homely and cosy with lots of exposed wood. Staff were very attentive and helpful- but best of all were the spoils ! Delicious platters of cheese, charcuterie and breads, washed down with beautiful wines. What a lovely way to spend an evening. Wouldn't hesitate in retuning.

Having eaten in Ox previously we were expecting a good experience and to have dinner however what we got was a poor imitation of what is best in France . We thought we would get charcuterie plate and also a cheese plate to share, what we got were small expensive portions which no restaurant in France would ever serve. It was a most disappointing experience. I would not recommend this to anyone. We went home and had dinner because we were all hungry. If I was asked to describe Ox cave I would say"trendy" not for the discerning food lover

We stopped by cave for a light dinner while in Belfast one night. The cheeses, charcuterie and wines that Madame selected for us were sublime. It was this best I've ever had, and that includes restaurants in Paris. We returned to Ox and had a great meal there, topped off with the wonderful cheese.

We came here after our tasting menu at Ox and were able to sample a few more wines and have some cheese. Great environment to sit relax and chat. Really enjoyed.

Range of wines and platters is excellent, the staff serving are extremely knowledgeable, and friendly, and cannot do enough to help.

We went to have the £25 cheeses with paired wine. It was superb and we enjoyed every minute. The waitress was very knowledgeable and pleasant. A lovely evening.

Just recently spent an evening at Ox Cave attending an Italian wine tasting with tapas. This is a great venue and we were catered extremely well. Wonderful staff. Even better try Ox. They have an amazing chef and a splendid maitre d'. The food is phenomenal. Lunch prices within easy reach. Scores 10+ from me everytime.

We had pre-dinner drinks and nibbles (sounds terribly 1980s) in Cave before dining in the fabulous Ox. The waitress was absolutely superb in every way. She was very knowledgeable about the wines available (try the Portuguese sparkling white) and recommended ever-so tasty treats to munch on.There's a good atmosphere and nice views of the Lagan. Thoroughly recommended!

I tried to get into OX on a Saturday night with no reservation, and alas they could not accommodate me - but they did bring me over to their wine bar - Cave - which was lovely. I agree with the other reviewers - the furniture could be more comfortable, but the wine list was great and the charcuterie plates I sampled were both excellent. The service was professional and pleasant. A wonderful surprise in Belfast.

This is a delight of a wine bar which is attached to the main restaurant. The main attribute to the place is the senior female waitress who has a wonderful personality and knows her stuff about the wines and cheeses.Great for a post dinner or late night causal glass of wine and cheese board. Also does a brilliant charcuterie bored or chocolate fondant. And extensive number of wines and Gina are available and if like ourselves are a novice to the whats what of the wine world then you will be educated and are in for a real experience and treat.Ox cave however has a drinks and food licence so if you are walking in off the street you must order food to be served

Tweet it and it could be perfect. An early evening, sampling wine and tapas, we thoroughly enjoyed. The female senior staff member is a joy, knowledgeably enjoys her job and life perhaps!But the room lacks atmosphere, it's cold and clinical, and a mirror, picture and some soft items are needed. A vase or two of flowers?It's an expensive treat but we enjoyed.Wishing you luck...

Me and my girlfriend visited here early June. It was a lovely place for a few nibbles and a couple of glasses of wine, from a very good and extensive wine list. We chose the Cave board of selected meats which was fantastic and beautifully presented, and brought to us from very friendly staff. However, the only thing that would put me off from coming back would be unfortunately very uncomfortable seats. This could be a fantastic place.. but just lacking in a bit of atomosphere and most definitely comfort.

We are in Ox downstairs and had the tasting menu with matching wines. The noise level on a Saturday evening was too high, we found it hard to have a proper conversation. There are no soft furnishings to absorb any of the noise. However, the food, whilst pretty good (it's not 5 star) was just too scarce, we all left hungry and disappointed. The first 2 courses were really only a few vegetables. The third was a tiny fish dish. The meat dish and dessert were ok, the dessert was really nice but we were just a bit fed up by then. It's not cheap either. There was no protein or carbohydrate to speak of!The staff were fairly attentive and when we said we were disappointed they said that we could have asked for more of anything... Not a concept we'd ever heard of before. The other odd thing was that they wouldn't tell us what was on the menu, even when we asked. This makes it hard to do anything other than have the matching wines. We wouldn't rush back.

This is truly the only wine bar in Northern Ireland ! Great wine list all served by the glass or the bottle depending on what you like . Fantastic cheeses and charcuterie served by highly trained and knowledgable staff . Can not speak highly enough of this lovely little cave !

Having enjoyed a fine meal next door at Ox, we took the opportunity to complete our experience by enjoying a night cap and selection of cheese next door at Ox cave. The ambiance was perfect for a later night experience and the knowledgable and welcoming staff made the whole experience special. The well selected wine and most amazing cheese selection rounded off the evening perfectly.

Lovely decor and service. Large selection of drinks and some cold food. Belfast needs more decent places. Recommended.

Nice setting but needs to up the game with a cocktail menu- I have no doubt the Ox team would deliver fab cocktails so jump to it!

This little wine bar blew my mind... I honestly did not expect to see something this nice in Belfast!Amazing selection of wines, which are easy to choose based on the recommendation of the extremely helpful staff. Great charcuterie and a mouth-watering cheese selection too. I wish this place was in London so I could go regularly!

Perfect spot for glass of wine & some nibbles...Next door to the unsurpassed food emporium that is OX restaurant, atmospheric wine bar. Wonderful selection of wines by the glass accompanied by cheese or charcuterie ..... What's not to like?!Fab

In on a Friday evening for some cheese and wine. Before ordering any wine had a chat with staff about what we liked and then tried a couple before choosing one. Then we were talked through the delicious cheese board before choosing a few of them to sample. Then we decided we would try some white wine, same as before we sampled a couple before getting a carafe of vermentio. To cap the evening of I had a sensational 10yr old tawny port while my girlfriend had a glass of sparkling red. Wonderful service and knowledge from staff. Can't wait to bring others to here regularly!!

The owners of Ox restaurant have opened up a wine bar next door to their restaurant. The wine list is interesting, and unusual, offering up some superb names mixed in with some small grower wineries. They have the best list of Sherry, yes Sherry by a country mile in Northern Ireland. I had on the way home from work, a glass of the Amontillado sherry, a sherry that offers a touch of sweetness, lots of nuttiness and a vein of salinity which was a perfect foil for the Comte with truffled honey. The perfect way for any gastronome to signal in the weekend with. You have wines by the glass, the carafe and alot of good bottles of wine for under £30, including one of the best Prosecco's in the form of Dogarina. My pick would be the Jadot Corton Les Greves 2001 at £75, this isn't too far off it's retail price and where would you get wonderfully mature Burgundy these days, a real find!
