Oscar's Inn in Newark and Sherwood

Large free car park. Craft beers and cider. Dog friendly. Good food served but expensive.

If I have not left a review before it’s because I didn’t really know how to then. Oscar’s is an excellent pub and much more.. It’s a little out of the actual centre so serves Newarks community the bulk of which are to the East along London Road. It’s a total relaxing place with great food and beers and an atmosphere that makes one feel at home but is rather cool. The owner is a Gentleman who is rather senior but still comes in and takes time to talk to and get to know his customers, always pays for his beer and is generous with his time and hospitality. When I lived nearby we had my mums wake at Oscars with a rather large family group on a difficult day and they made that bad day better in the great way we were all treated and served to help us through it. That alone will always make me feel that Oscar’s is great and indeed I miss it being my local pub but like I said it is way more than that if you want somewhere that’s not just another pub. In Newark there is actually a big difference in what each individual bar or pub offers as most are owned and run by individuals and not big companies. What a great town to enjoy yourself in. Nice pub, the staff are lovely but the atmosphere can be a little off, with some of the locals hating the other locals, if your just after a quiet drink it's not so bad but I only drink in here with my dad as it's local to us both.

Nice pub, recommended by a local , 4 or 5 different draught beers on and a choice of others too. Nice interior

Fab Sunday roast well done keep it going

We booked into one of the private rooms upstairs for a party of 9 after hearing great things about Oscars. However we were very disappointed and shocked with the lack of customer service. On arrival we were not approached or welcomed, and when we decided to approach a member of staff behind the bar ourselves to mention we were booked in for 1pm, we were told to go and sit upstairs in any room of our choice. We had never actually been here before and were given no directions of where to go, I’d have thought we’d be shown upstairs by a member of staff. Anyway after finding our way, we sat at the table which had not been set, no cutlery in the room. Waited a while assuming a member of staff would come take our drink order, to find out that we had to order downstairs and carry our drinks up, plus jugs/glasses for water. Not to mention having to dig a high chair out of a store room ourselves even though we requested one when we booked in via email enquiry. We were just left to our own up there with no service whatsoever, even after ringing the bell. Overall the food was okay, but service was majorly lacking, not to mention a certain member of female staff who was quite abrupt but the manager did speak with her. As someone who has worked in hospitality in the past, I was shocked to find out how such a popular place had such poor customer service and I won’t be in a rush to return.

Wow! Wow! Wow! We were on our way to Derbyshire and searched on line while in car to find somewhere to eat in the way. Well we stumbled on a real find. Booked on phone for 30 mins hence. Warmly welcomed. Had primitivo by glass-always a bonus. Ordered 2 steaks with sauces and fish and chips. Arrived 10 mins later. Piping hot. Tender steaks great sauces. Crispy batter on fish. Beautifully presented, smiling staff and fantastic prices. Just amazing. Give this little gem a try.

Nice pubb with a good ambience...I loved it had a chance to be there unexpectedly....had good music playlist.. we had steak and kerala beef curry and rice with pappadam and chutney..basically I'm from kerala and even it's not spicy curry but the taste was similar like a homely food like my mom made and lemon pickle is exactly same...

Good food, parking clean and tidy

The owner (it was certainly the owner) is rude and obnoxious, amongst other negative traits, which are well known amongst Newark locals; the beer is over-priced.

Good food and fine range of draft beers and lagers. Also a nice friendly welcome.

We hadn't been to Oscars for a while, and on entry, we realised quickly that this may have changed hands. It was no longer a bustling, busy or inviting atmosphere. We were met at the bar with a less than enthusiastic welcome from an older blond lady who in all honesty, was downright rude when I simply asked whether they did the square pizzas anymore as we would have brought a larger one and shared this. One could tell the question had irritated her and just responded that they didn't do them anymore. She never offered a menu of other food they did and I had to hunt for a menu and was pleasantly surprised to see that they did still do pizzas with the same, or very similar toppings as such. I was extremely surprised by the prices. We're talking nearly £18 pounds for a 12"pizza, which was nothing in comparison to the beautiful pizzas they used to do hence the sheer drop in clientele in my view. Alarm bells should have rang when I called to book and there was no need. Never again will we set foot in this pub to be served overpriced,less than average fod by someone so miserable that it is evident they do not want to be there. Such a shame as we spent many a good evening in this pub!

Great takeaway pizzas. Service and presentation all good. Chips are way overpriced for portion size and standard french fires being sold as being julienne fries.

Me and a friend meet up here regularly to enjoy lunch and drink and to play backgammon. Food always good - not high cuisine, but tasty, well prepared, healthy and affordable. Space outside - hidden from the road so passers by might not even realise its there. And most important for us - dogs really are welcome with water bowls and free biccies provided. :-)

An elderly gentleman, around 80 years old, was questioning his bill, which was three times the value of his purchase. While a female bar staff member was genuinely trying to assist him, she sought support from another, presumably superior, staff member. Unfortunately, this superior was rude and dismissive, telling the elderly man to check his account and implying they were too busy to help, suggesting he should come back later. Thankfully, the female staff member ignored her superior and resolved the issue. However, without my support, the elderly man might not have received a solution. After the situation was resolved, the superior continued to be rude, insisting that their mistake was actually the old man's error. Older and vulnerable people should not be treated with such disdain, and this incident speaks volumes about the quality of customer service.

Work retirement do. Food was done by the pub and decent. Function room had plenty of seating and bar. Good time had by all.

Great food. Very tasteful decor. Some classic songs. Obscure b sides etc. From Jethro Tull to Cream. Brilliant memories 👏

Service below average, felt an inconvenience to the staff. Good food but unsure it was worth the money. Wouldn’t rush back, which is shame considering how great it used to be.

What a little gem this place is, menu changes regularly and there's a theme most evenings. Large portions served quickly. Lots of polite staff on hand to quickly serve the food hot. Will definitely be returning .

Had a great first time in the pub just before christmas, but the change of menu and sub-par service each time ive been since has been disappointing. The pub has a lot of potential, but im not sure whats not quite working at the moment.

Best place to dine in the Newark. Tomato soup is legendary. Owners are the nicest people. We have not looked another place to after first time

Visited at lunchtime and night as we were staying in a b&b up the road. Had a lovely burger and fries and chicken curry with a nice pint of Timothy taylors. Great atmosphere in there, friendly staff and chill out seats. Dog friendly, too . Recommended.

Great pub for a beer, especially in the beer good sized garden. Good menu with a great range of pizza and can recommend the fish and chips. What adds to the experience, is the staff. Ellie, B and Steph are all very friendly.

Was waiting outside for Oscar’s to open and was surprised when the door opened there were already people inside. The lady serving just completely ignored me whilst she took their orders and proceeded to make the slowest coffees ever. Never at any point did she look in my direction acknowledge me or even say I won’t be a moment. A man came through to bring some lemons, saw me and walked away. After 7-8 minutes I just decided to walk out, no-one even looked in my directions …. Really bad customer service as I was meeting someone here for lunch and you probably missed out 50-60 pounds of trade ???

Popped in for a pint 👍 lovely staff and good choice of beers 🍻. Shame the children were allowed to run all over place !!

We stopped off for lunch on a drive from London to Scotland. Real wood burning stove, Timothy Taylor Landlord and great food. Massive portions. I had steak and chips. Both delicious. Other diners seemed to be eating open sandwiches which looked so good I had food envy, until mine came along. It is famous for its pizzas which we might try next time. It has a substantial amount of outside seating, including some in what I can only describe as beach huts and others in a row of covered open chalets. The covered seats all had infrared heaters.

Went to Oscars to have a giant square pizza and was extremely disappointed to find out they don’t do them anymore!! Had a Margarita which was over cooked and tasteless. The pub was virtually empty and no square pizzas is the reason, we shall not be returning as the overpriced pizza was very average.

Need to bring back the 16in square pizza's it's not the same now they have cut the size of the pizzas down but looks to have keep the price the same.

Late notice booking. The squeezed us in and gave us a table outside. They were really helpful throughout. The night was a bit rainy, but we were dry under the gazebo. The staff were exceptional and the service was best I've had anywhere in Newark. In these pandemic times, the awareness and precautions were 100% correct, and all the staff were completely compliant with the rules. Again, I think the best I've seen anywhere. Staff kept checking if we wanted anything. They were always friendly and made us feel at home. Incredible service throughout. The menu tonight was just pizza..... but it was excellent, lots of toppings, and the pizzas are really massive. One between two people is enough, although it is really easy to take some home in a box if you order one each. Great experience, and 100% credit to the young waiting staff for being so good.

Always enjoy here, although anyone looking for bargain prices wouldn't find it suitable. Food is normally good also.

For many years, this pub has been my go-to spot, and it never disappoints! The selection of cask ales is unparalleled, with the Jaipur topping my list every time, though beware, a few pints might leave you pleasantly wobbly. While I miss the huge square pizzas, the new ones are still delightful, albeit with a spicy kick that'll make your taste buds sing and your eyes water – a true pepperoni lover's dream! What truly sets this place apart is the exceptional staff who go above and beyond to ensure your visit is memorable. On my last visit, they not only provided exceptional service but also surprised my children with free puddings, not even on the menu! A heartfelt thank you for the extra mile. Moreover, the dog-friendly atmosphere adds an extra layer of charm, with treats available for our furry friends. With its welcoming vibe and outstanding service, this pub is a gem worth returning to time and time again. Cheers to many more years of great memories!

We popped in for a quick pint to shelter from the rain during our dog walk. The bar staff were welcoming and attentive.

Only about 12.30 but there was only beef left on the Sunday menu. Good was good. Staff were a bit under pressure

10/10 Great food and service had steak pizza and beef roast. Recommended you book as its quite popular but a lovely atmosphere.

We booked a table for 16 for a family reunion and Christmas Lunch on Dec 25th. The food was superb with a choice of a traditional Christmas turkey lunch, salmon en croute, or roast beef. Oscars were catering for a full house across three rooms on two floors. The generously portioned food was served piping hot, with just the right amount of time between the three courses. The staff had given up their own Christmas Day to contribute towards this amazing day. The staff were friendly, courteous and very professional. We cannot thank them enough for looking after our large party including an elderly lady in a wheelchair. We would definitely do this all over again.

Pizzas are good , choice of beer good. Nice pub would recommend.

We had an Hawaiian pizza takeaway. Very large square pizza , plenty for two . Was tasty however it was undercooked.

We held my brother’s wake here & everything was perfect.Steff & his team ensured it all ran smoothly & definitely went the extra mile.A large number(100 plus) were catered for with pizzas & chips & almost drank the bar dry but the service was courteous & efficient.Steff even brought a pot of tea for my Mum & kept an eye on younger children in the other bar.It really made a difficult day so much easier.I would 100% recommend for a similar event.

We had a recent 70th family party in one of the upstairs rooms. Food was lovely as was the service. We had a lovely evening.

First visit …I’ll definitely be back. The menu is great and they’ve added touches to make your dining experience special… it’s not the boring menu that most places put out. The mussels were delicious 😋 with a sauce that added a slight kick to the palette. My friend had the Dahl and likewise thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was also spot on. Both had puddings.. again delicious 😋

Popped into Oscars this evening for a drink and some food,drinks I cannot fault, plentiful, the food on the other hand was at best terrible, I had the dahl and my wife had the Thai mussels, and a portion of chips,all blessed with an abundance of salt, far too much salt,both meals wete left uneatan, when the waiter did come along to clear our dishes we had th opportunity to tell him the food was blessed with far too much salt,his response, I will let the chef know..For anybody who reads this review and thinking about eating there, don't given this day and age and the abundance of food outlets out there Oscars is definitely not one of them......

Nice place, let down by the service. Food from my experience has been good quality and fresh. Last visit called for coffee, bar maid refused to serve anything that wasn't "the hard stuff" eventually got served by someone else, the coffee was not worth the wait! Not even remotely passable, I've actually had better from macdonalds and that cost a fraction of the price and pain and suffering to get it! Lovely place but so hit and miss with your sevice

We were in Newark for one night and Oscar’s was just round the corner. It had a pleasant atmosphere and very lively for a Saturday night. The food was great I had the beef rib and my wife had the fish. The couple next to us had pizza and it comes in a neat wicker tray and it was huge. I almost wished I’d had it that instead. Great place worth a trip.

Yes we were back at Oscars, and we were not disappointed. This time it was for a private party. The pizzas are the best. The service at the bar was very friendly. Good work to all the staff at Oscars keep up the good work.

The pizza is really great here, enough for 2 and they do half and half if you can't agree on what you both want (or just want to mix it up). A few decent ales on tap too

Only went for a quick lunchtime drink with friends. Sat outside in an area that used to be part of the carpark. Lots of HUGE tasty looking pizzas were being served. Will have to try one next time!

Only popped in for a pint seemed like a cracking little pub

We visited here one evening two weeks ago. The drinks and variety of ales were amazing. However, most meals were not available so we had to eat pizza, which was huge, dry and tasteless and almost inedible. It was the worst pizza we have ever had and we had to send most of it back. We had heard great things and had high hopes but we will not be returning.

Nice place for a drink in Newark, with a car park too. Lovely inside but the garden is the winner. Cheap-ish drinks too!

Oscar's Inn and John, the Assistant Manager in particular, came to our rescue when a venue let us down for our family gathering, to celebrate our Ruby Wedding. We were able to have part of the bar area and had a wonderful buffet and pizza. The quiches were particularly delicious, as were the chips. The food was presented really well and served right on time. Thank you so much John for accommodating us and doing everything we asked for professionally and reliably.

Perfect pizza and really friendly staff with a very cosy atmosphere and good selection of Ales. Highly recommend. Really dog friendly with a menu just for dogs.

Came here with a group of work colleagues and we shared some drinks and some lovely pizzas! They were massive and so delicious! Beer garden is massive and plenty of seats for everyone. The pub isn’t wheelchair accessible from what I’ve seen but the beer garden is. Would definitely be back for the pizzas!

Friendly bar staff and a really nice atmosphere in the pub. The food was delicious too, and they had a good selection of beers available on tap.

Fabulous local pub, friendly reception, good draft selection and the best Guinness in Newark. Pizza is enormous, kids food is great - open fire in the winter and a decent outdoor space in the summer.

Love this place - fabulous pizza in a casual setting at at very reasonable price. Staff are very friendly and efficient - would highly recommend.

We booked a table here for Saturday lunch. Great atmosphere and attentive staff. The food was amazing and everyone in our party enjoyed every mouthful. One of our party ordered the pizza, however he didn't realise it was going to be so big! We will be back to share a pizza again soon. 😀

I was hungry, we had no idea where we were. We saw Oscars and pulled in. Friendly atmosphere, staff and excellent food. Worthy of a Michelin star any day. We were expecting 'basic food' but we got an excellent, well presented vegetarian Sunday roast. The wine I chose was a Malbec. Very good. Pub wine can be 'iffy' but this was very good. Oscar’s catered for my aunties funeral reception and my dad would like to thank the staff for their service and large selection of food provided.

We are regulars at Oscars and probally eat there at least once a week. This year we decided to go to Oscars for our Christmas lunch. 8 adults and a baby and 2 french bulldogs. The food was amazing-probally toooo much, the staff were incredible and the atmosphere fantastic. Some Christmas music would have been nice though. Well done Oscars
