Orchard is located on an atmospheric pedestrianised street in Holborn. Sicilian Avenue is close to the British Museum and runs diagonally across from Bloomsbury Way to Southampton Row. The food at Orchard is innovative and accomplished. We eat breakfast here whenever we're in London, and somehow the scrambled eggs are always cooked just right. The toasted oat porridge with lemon thyme pesto (sounds weird but it's outstanding) has just the right amount of creaminess and is the best I have ever eaten. For lunch there's a daily selection of three salads, which are always tasty and creative. I've often enjoyed the truffled cauliflower cheese and also recommend the home baked soda bread. A couple of reviewers have said they thought the food was overpriced, but I think it's good value, especially for this kind of quality in central London. Only downside is that it closes at 8 pm.

We spotted Sicilian Lane while walking along Southampton Row. The Orchard is a quaint little vegetarian restaurant with an interesting, if small menu. We sat outside under large umbrellas. I had pea fritter with a duck egg and spinach, watercress & walnut salad with green pesto. Delicious and delicate. I decided to have some of the home baked bread too, which was also delicious. My friend had the tomato tart - an open confection on puff pastry. Their coffee is good and strong. The menu may be limited, but this means the food IS freshly prepared. Other diners were eating sandwiches made with interesting breads and imaginative fillings. One I can remember was Stilton with Braeburn chutney and iceberg on sultana bread. I think that was it! I definitely recommend this lovely place, and hope to revisit soon. They have another branch called Vanilla Black, in Tooks Court, EC4A.

We came here after a day of visiting London and discovered an amazing place for tasty and imaginative food. We loved the multiple small dishes and the opportunity to share plates. We realize that even not vegetarians we love this kind of place because it's so much more imaginative and tasty. What we loved also is that the waitresses were very much looking forward to giving us the best experience and the kids were very happy with this. Last but not least, mugs and plates and glasses are lovely.

I have visited the Orchard a number of times and have always been impressed. The combinations can seem a little unique but don’t let that put you off because the food is lovely. The staff are very friendly and there is always someone available to serve you quickly. Getting a table inside at lunch can be challenging as the place is very popular. The only downside is it is expensive, even for central London and so I don’t visit as often as I would like to.Their homemade biscuits are huge and taste incredible!

After a tiring day in the London weather, I decided to take my friend to Orchard to show him that vegetarian food can be just as comforting, filling and delicious as non-veggie food. Having been to Orchard before, I was greeted with recognition by the staff and we had a quick chat about the absolute crap weather we had just been rescued from. Immediately we were sat at a long table with another couple eating which created a great community environment and a nice break from London urban solitude. Being vegan, I ordered the soup (lentil, celeriac and tomato) and some purple sprouting broccoli with sesame oil. Our order was taken quickly and cheerfully by a tiny woman who was very careful I only selected vegan options. My friend having a heartier appetite ordered poached duck eggs with smoky croutons watercress and pineapple chutney AND a savoy cabbage and cheddar pudding. While the titles are a little wordy it was worth the complicated name! Our dining experience at Orchard was just what we needed. A reasonable price for great coffee, great food and undeniable attentive and comfortable staff. If you are ever in Holborn check Orchard out because not only is it an independent business (one of the only ones in the area) but the food is great, service is fast and the waitresses are genuinely interested in what you have to say.GO GO GO !

tube strikes on, long walk across London - what a delight ... the idea of breakfast at 10am at the Orchard. Lovely place, great atmosphere, delicious food ... UH-OH! No, not at all. What a change. There were only I table occupied, when I arrived. Strangely, we both asked for scrambled eggs on toast and were offered a set plate: eggs, mushrooms, spinach and I think some rosemary/tomato bread/cake, I think. No, we just wanted scambled eggs on toast, was that possible. Waiter had to go and ask. So, far - so fairly normal. Were told yes — Good, I thought, I'll certainly give them a tip. So we waited. We waited. Coffee take-aways came in and went, and came back again - coffee burnt tasting. My black coffee tasted watery. In a blind taste, I would have said instant or chicory, but I had seen in made from the machine. Who knows, I was cold, so settled for the comfort of black water. The other table was served with their eggs, I continued to wait. Getting warm and pleased to be near my destination on a difficult travelling day. Eggs came, with extra toast, which I wasn't sure was for me? No, it was for the now 3rd occupant at another table. My goodness, 3 orders to get right!I asked for more black pepper and was told my plate would have to be taken downstairs again. No!! I was too hungry, so said leave it because the eggs were already tepid, toast soggy. Ground pepper was then found and brought to the table by the man. As I ate my eggs, I began to wonder - what has happened to this formerly cheery place. The two staff comprised a woman constantly checking on the male waiter who was working the coffee machine and trying to 'wait' on table. It seemed as if he had been told not to make a single decision without first checking with the woman. The woman checked on his every move but never once said anything encouraging, or smiled, for instance! The man waiting engaged in conversation with me about travelling and I felt was warmer and seemed to be trying to do a good job, whilst having his every move 'over-seen'.The BBC came in to film, again met with no warmth, delight or uplifting welcome. It wasn't exactly a bad mood, just a distant coldness. The Producer had to ask, are you expecting us? A valid question given the mood. Yes was the response. I smiled and talked to the producer more than the staff. She has to ask for a coffee and for her camera man. Surely, anyone would welcome a pre-arranged film crew! Surely.Eventually, I asked for the bill and queried the full cost of the full "egg+' plate, stating that I felt that when I asked for just eggs on toast, they had every right to say, No, just what's on the menu, or Yes, but it will be the price on the menu. But not to serve it up and then charge for things not ordered, cooked or eaten. My point was not acknowledged, but the bill was re-returned with £1-1.20 taken off. Well, there went their tip and the cake order I was going to take-out for colleagues in the office.I asked if all the other ingredients were worth £1-1.20p? The women took no responsibility, in fact blamed the man, saying the service was his fault, he was new. I waived this away saying to her, Well it's your restaurant, you make the decisions. To which she replied:"It's not my restaurant, I only work here" ... C L A S S I CI don't come form a high service culture, but I always chose Orchard for it's 'nice' service culture. I hope the 'owners' of Orchard read this. There were 3 tables and 2 take aways over 40 minutes! It is clear you have extended seats/covers, taking away the lovely, eye-catching (but non-income earning) window display. OR, is that the mis-judgment. However many seats you have, if the staff are dis-connected, it's a bad experience. If my bill had reflected my lovely (could be hotter) crambled eggs on toast, I would have paid a tip (to thank them), and taken a cake order, so paying at least £15. Instead I paid £8.20 as I needed to get on my way, and have written this review.I have no desire to go back to Orchard - what it was, has gone.

Sought this place out as a veggie. Nice menu, and imaginative way you pick a main and sides so allows you to be the combination of food you want.We turned up at about 2:30pm on a Saturday - and many options had sold out (even the soup). No idea how they would get to the end of the day. Busy - people turned away because of no room (not many tables). The food looked good, just didn't taste as nice as you would expect. For example, the cheese and cauliflower pie tasted of just cauliflower. Mustard mash, tasted of just mash.Service was good and friendly. I'd good back, just hope they read this review and get the food up to standard. Love the concept.

...only joking, the Orchard is not quite that good, but it really does try to be something more than your average hemp-sandal-wearing veggie restaurant. Instead of lentils and hummus the menu here is crammed with exciting dishes like poached duck egg on smokey croutons with watercress and pineapple chutney, leek pie with foraged wild sea beets or savoury bread-and-butter pudding. The dishes aren't that filling, so try two or order some of their chunky artisan bread and butter to plug the gap. Save room for a cake afterwards - courgette cake with lemon buttercream, or chocolate bombe with salted caramel... The selection changes regularly!Staff were attentive without being overbearing, and the customers come from the more artistic and eclectic side of life. My only gripe? I don't care how pretty the teabags are - put them in the teapot with boiling water, please, don't leave them out on display until the water's gone off the boil.

Popped along to Orchard after work with a couple of vegetarians. Not being one myself but always happy to try something different I was pleased. We shared salads and savories which were very nice. I particularly enjoy the smoked cauliflower. The portions were slightly on the small side but they do recommend having 3 - 4 per person. A nice idea but at £6 or so for each small plate this seems a little expensive. The Marmite potatoes were flavoursome but really just Martmite coated potatoes hardly worth the price. I would suggest going for a light lunch and maybe trying the soup and sarnie. Not somewhere to go eat in the evening. More a cup of mint tea and a cake. The service was good and very attentive and the atmosphere calm and relaxing. I didn't realise there was seating downstairs too so if you walk past and think it's full, pop downstairs and have a look first!

The coffee and the food were good - we both had the scrambled egg with mushrooms and smokey tomato sauce. Mine came with an added human hair which wasn't so appealing. There were two servers - the woman was attentive and efficient; the man was a deal loss - he didn't bring the cup that we asked for and never seemed to be aware of what was happening despite there being so few people to serve. It looks intriguing and good information in the window and a hint of quirkiness that makes you hope this is not a regurgitated or cut & paste bistro. And no it is not!Small it is on the inside, with more tables outside and downstairs. So it helped that a table for four was free straight away, near the front.A nice welcome and a good selection of drinks. I went to Orchard one morning for breakfast and before I even got there I felt slightly ill-at-ease. There was no punter in the place (which at 8am in Holborn is very unusual) and the two waitresses were staring at me through window, which put me off even approaching the window to see if there was a menu on display. The menu in the window was written essentially on brown wrapping paper by hand. I know it;s a recession but come on; making things rustic doesn't mean they have to look like like you've just recovered some old paper from your recycle bin. Anyway, I went in, determine to try this fairly new place and since I was on my own it felt a bit awkward. I ordered poached eggs on some kind of brown muffin, with home made chutney. That was very nice but I had to eat it under the eagle eye of the two waitresses. Enough to put you off your food. Essentially, I think that this is a nice place if you want some different vegetarian food but there isn't a massive choice so it's the kind of place that you go into just to try, which explains why it's nearly always empty. Also, there are some very confusing things. The shop is called Orchard and the window contains organic vegetables for sale, so it looks like a small grocers rather than a place where you would think you can eat.i pointed out to the waitresses that the fact the menu was difficult to see on the window (it is not facing the street but on a side door) and that it is written on some poorly presented paper really doesn't reflect the posh branding they are trying to showcase; the answer was "Well the owners like it that way. Fundamental flaw which explains the apparent limited success of the place. You don't do things just because you like them; you do it because it appeals to your customers. I don't pretend I know everything or even represent the vast majority of customers, but it seems to me that if a customer makes a comment, you could at least acknowledge they may have a point.Anyway, the rent they pay in this place must be enormous since it is in the exclusive Sicilian Avenue near Holborn, but thankfully it is not reflected in the prices. However that also mean it might not be around for that long. As I said, it's the type of place you try because it's interesting but I'm not sure you actually go back there unless you are a hyper-veggie with no choice.

I had read excellent things about orchard and really wanted to like it, so I am sorry to be the first to give a less than ecstatic review. The room is calm and relaxing, prices reasonable and the menu looks great. But flavourings were heavy handed and some items actually unpleasant as a result. Soup and a sarnie looked great value at 7.95 but neither was good. I am wary of savoury 'marmalades' as they are sometimes overly sweet, so before ordering a cheese sandwich with beetroot marmalade I asked about this and was assured that no, this wasn't particularly sweet- it was though, tooth achingly so, and there was masses of it. Not much cheese though. The pumpkin soup tasted overwhelmingly of cinnamon(not mentioned on the menu) that did not marry well with the drizzle of tarragon oil, and the hummus and lemon sandwich had way too much lemon zest, which gave a soapy flavour drowning out anything else. My virtually untouched food was cleared away without comment: I didn't have the heart to actually complain but I would have expected to be asked if the food was ok or not. Finally, in this century I don't expect the bill to be handed automatically to my husband, particularly if I have requested it and am paying. A real shame, I had anticipated many repeat visits.
