Now "Compagnie Des Vins Surnaturels" (and not vegetarian as mentioned elsewhere). Met friends here for the start of a night out. The female staff were passably polite, however the man who seemed to be in charge was awful, arrogant, condescending and rude to the point of being insulting. After bringing over an apple juice (the last of an order which did include a glass of wine) he nastily informed us that "WE are wine bar...we don't even usually serve soft drinks here..." and proceeded to hover around us peering at how much was left in our glasses, obviously wanting to clear the table for the non-existent hoards of people waiting to come in and be insulted after we left. A member of our party also heard/saw him complaining to other patrons and pointing over at us. It would serve them well to remember that people who might only be stopping in for a drink one evening may well return for a meal and spend more money at a later date, if they aren't treated so disgustingly rudely. Do yourself a favour and go to Souk down the street instead! Polite staff and a better drinks menu.

My niece knew that my partner and I liked Neal's Yard, as we have been there before, but hadn't been to Neal's Yard Salad Bar...There were 7 of us and to our surprise they had a table for us, now this is not a big place and we soon found out why there was room. The wait staff looked like they were fighting to stay awake or pay attention to paying customers. The young lady there tried very hard to take our orders but it seem to be a bit overwhelming for her, when our order was taken after about 15 mins we watched at least 10 couples sit down and walk out due to no service. The young guy who served our drinks had to be told 3 times which drinks went where and still he got it wrong, same thing with the food orders. It was a very long wait before the food was actually served and it wasn't worth the wait or the money. The only time any of the staff had a burst of energy was when we left the money on the tray with the bill....We wont be back....

Fancy waiting an hour to get a £3 diet coke and then being given a non-diet coke in a glass full of cillit bang? Then this is the place for you!Aside from the near poisoning experience, everything else about our experience was also a disaster: We paid £7.50 for a sandwich that took so long to emerge that my backside had begun to fossilise. When it did arrive, it looked like it had been made by a particularly ham-fisted toddler. The staff got everyone in the restaurant's order wrong (this is not an exaggeration) and made up for it by being about as welcoming as a border control guard would be upon finding us in a car boot!I am never going back and will advise everyone I know to steer clear.

Many of the reviews I provide are related to good experiences, but every now and then you come across a place that demonstrates such a lack of service and attention to its customers that it must be communicated to others. Neal's Yard Salad Bar is such a place. We stopped by for a late morning/early lunch beverage and bite to eat. Inquired if they were indeed serving, as we had waited a while with no acknowledgement fromt the staff. Assured they were in fact serving, we waited another 10 minutes without so much as eye contact or a nod of the head before leaving. The point is that if you are treated so dismissively before you even order food, how well is the remainder of the visit likely to be? They had a few customers seated at tables, but this was not a busy meal time. Enough said.

Ordered a veggie breakfast on a quite Sunday morning, easy simple.. I thought. When the breakfast came, I looked down at my paltry portion and thought "is this is it, where's the rest of it"?As the waitress left I realized that the veggie sausages were missing so I asked the waitress and she said "yes the chef has just gone to the shop to buy some"! It took me a moment to realize what she had said..."so, wouldn't it have been better to wait for the veggie sausages to arrive before cooking and serving the rest of the breakfast then?", I said, quite a simple mathematical equation really, by the time the sausages arrive and are cooked the customers would have finished eating the rest of their breakfast, right!Although the waitress was clearly sorry and gave me a free coffee, I really wouldn't bother going here for any food, maybe a coffee. The food is overpriced, and virtually no different than what you would find at an East End cafe for half the price, and the logic of the chef, to cook and serve half of the breakfast while he went out to find some sausages...well say no more!

My friend and I came here for lunch on a Thursday, and were greeted with not much more than a grunt by the waiter. He didn't show us to a table, so we sat ourselves down. The menus were grubby, and there weren't many salads. There were only salads on the specials menu, and they didn't sound very appetising. All salads were £10 each and juices were £5 or £6. The atmosphere wasn't special enough to justify those prices, so I'm sorry to say that we left without ordering and had lovely pizza at the place just across the yard.

It is a very clean, very quiet and cosy setting, Neal's Yard itself.I was here thirty years back when the first loaves of bread, wholemeal and grain ones were sold to a queue of very keen customers who, while awaiting, would put their penny in the "man in a hat" wooden statue just to look at the amazed faces of the ones who received a spit of clean water right in their eyes!Well, since then prices have gone up, perhaps too much.Still, if you can afford it, it is a splendid way of spending (litelarry) your summer afternoon with a friend.P.S. the man in the hat is still to be admired in Monmouth Street somewhere near Neal's Yard!

Yesterday I stopped of with a friend at Neal's Yard Salad Bar. I ordered 2 teas at about £3 quid each, but hey, it's westend prices so no problem with that. It was when we came to order food that the rip-off began. I ordered a green salad at about £8 quid and tasty- sounding chiken balls with a dip, also about £8. So for £16 I thought that I would actually be getting a half-decent meal. My friend ordered a cassava bread with cheese. What arrived were 8 miniscule, deep-fried chicken balls (each no bigger than a finger tip and with scarcely any filling). The sauce was a revolting, lumpy soyanaise dip. The green salad seems to have been a hastily grabbed handful of salad leaves (brown around the edges), and nothing else - no dressing, no onions, cucumber or anything else. So that was £16 for very little and badly prepared food. My friend's cassava bread was a rock-hard, dried muffin - again with nothing to accompany it. In total we paid £26 pounds for the tea and 'food'. I complained to one of the guys working there who actually agreed with me that the prices are way over the top, but the excuse was that 'the boss' makes the prices. This is one place to definitely avoid.

Everything else was closed around 7pm, so the only option was Neal's Yard Salad Bar.There was not much on offer and whatever was in customers' sight looked old and disgusting, so we only went for some smoothies and "freshly pressed" juices in the end. Unfortunately they were horrendous and a complete rip-off. Also the staff was absolutely clueless and rude. Conclusion? Never again.

Terribly disappointed. Have wanted to come here for months, finally made it in June on a sunny day with my vegetarian daughter.Chose the trio of three salads for 8 pounds, and was aghast - a couple of spoonfuls of plain cous cous, some blanched spinach, and an insulting spoon or two of part-cooked austere carrot and cauliflower. No dressing, nothing caring or innovative, a slap in the face for anyone truly interested in quality vegetarian/ vegan cooking. The only reason i didn't make a fuss is that my daughter chose the place and she was clearly upset enough by her awfully plain tomato and olive on bread.A disgusting disregard for good food in general, and vegetarian cuisine in particular. I tried to find a contact address to voice my complaints more directly, but having failed to find this, will now do so on public forum. Insulting.

My husband and I sat down at this salad bar last Saturday. The sun was out and all the tables outside were taken. We pointed at one table inside and asked one of the waiters if we could sit there. He looked at us completely uninterested and just nodded.Only once we sat down we noticed a little sign on the door saying 'cash only' which was a bit inconvenient but we were planning to order first and then my husband would have gone to get some cash out. We sat there for 10 minutes and in that time we saw three different people coming and going but they were all very focused on serving/taking orders from the tables outside and didn't even look inside. It was impossible to catch their attention. When finally one of them came inside (mind you, all the doors were wide open which meant that the indoor and outdoor parts were basically one whole open space) they just collected the cash from the table opposite ours and ran out again without even looking at us. Needless to say, we just stood up and left. Terrible!

I accept that if you want to enjoy a drink in a small courtyard in Covent Garden, then you may have to pay a premium. However I would say that the Neals Yard Salad Bar, whilst offering such a location, does not deliver on cost and in fact is overpriced and in my opinion a 'tourist trap' To charge £3 for a green tea which consisted of one tea bag in a glass of hot water to me was a rip off. There was not a soft drink below £3 on the menu. If you accept that you pay those type of prices then you'd expect something better. Fruit juices ranged from £5. Choice was limited as the green tea I opted for was in fact my third choice - the other 2 choices were 'out of stock'

Situated in the heart of Neals Yard, this salad bar looked full of promise – great view, nice “ethnic” touches, indoor and outdoor seating – just what we were looking for on a warm spring day in London. Unfortunately, that was the end of the good news. The menu surprisingly lacked a decent range of salads (why was it called a salad bar?) and in general I have seen better choice at Pret Manger. We had to wait 20 minutes to get served and then food was another 20 minutes and was not worth the wait. In summary – an expensive snack bar, with poor service, uninteresting food, but a good view. Will not be going back.

I'm usually quite patient and tolerant when it comes to sub-standard service, but Neal's Yard Salad Bar just pushed me too far - I wish I'd read the other reviews beforehand, but alas not.Similar to other reviews, the service was slow (despite less than half the tables being occupied), waiters lacked both basic English and the smallest desire to "serve", and the prices were ridiculous for what actually arrived. Don't start me on the quality of the food.My biggest gripe was their outright refusal to serve me a "side salad" to accompany my soup. The "eat in" menu offered only a "selection of salads" for £8.50 - but the takeaway menu offered salads in a variety of sizes (including a small salad for £3). Infuriating. And pathetic, at the same time. But this place probably survives by single-visit tourists over and over again....I I was their latest sucker last weekend, *sigh*Next time, try the World Food Cafe upstairs, above Neal's Yard Remedies. The take-away menu where the food is shows prices at £6 but when you sit down they magically go up to £17 with no warning. An incredibly average quick-grabbed lunch with no wine, no beer, no starters or desserts cost £53 for 2 of us - more than 3 times what we expected. Waiters could not speak English and were rude and unhelpful and the manager was extremely obnoxious. This is a complete tourist trap designed to just rip off visitors to this country and I am annoyed as a Londoner trying to impress an American friend with the diversity of cuisine offered here that I was exploited like this. Is it even legal to charge 3 times the takeaway menu just to sit at a hard wooden bench in the rain?! Worst value for money I have experienced for years - avoid this place at all costs. They don't care about their customers or their staff and it has no redeeming features at all.

This is a lovely location on a summer's day. I just had a relaxing back rub at the "Walk in Back Rub" place next door. I've had take away's here some years ago and remember enjoying the veggy pasta. I came by the day before and took away a delicious portuguese tart and a coke in the old fashion bottle. I was encouraged to sit down and be served, but I said i was just looking at the deli and might take something away. He turned and quickly lost interest. I don't think take away is encouraged.Today I thought I would treat my self to a nice fresh juice and lunch. I ask to sit at a table that just came available. The young man was very nice and professional. He explained he just needed to clean it. I sat and asked if they had fresh juice. He said yes, but being his first day he was still learning about the menu. He said they had apple and listed others etc, I decided on apple, carrot with ginger. He went off and I continued to look at the menu. Another young man came to the table with a nice welcoming smile and asked if I would like a drink. I said thank you, but I already ordered. Then a much older man came to me and asked for my drink order and reminded it was a CASH only cafe. I said that is fine, but I did order a juice a few minutes ago.NO NO,he was pleased to correct me. He said he is not a waiter. He don't have this waiter pad to write it down. SEE, as he pointed at his pad. You give the order to ME. His manner was UNPLEASANT. So I curtly said I ordered a juice and explained the type. He said have you decided what to eat, no no your not ready are you. I said, I think I do know what I want, I would like the pasta with,( before I finished he said) ,here ,these are the pastas. No I said I would like the vegetable pasta like they serve to go . Oh yes, that is this one. I looked and said, WOW, that is 17.50, I said that is 12.50 more then take away. He said thats because of the tax man, the lease etc etc. I thought ok, I don't mind, you must charge more if one is sitting at their tables being served. But surely it must come with a salad or something ,I only wanted to ask. He wouldn't let me get my question in before saying IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT, get a take away there inside and sit over there, pointing at a circular barrel bench to eat it, at the top of his voice. I felt insulted, I had to defend myself and say but I can afford it. OH SO YOUR A RICH MAN, good for you! what is the problem then, with his face all screwed up. I asked to have another waiter at this point as the lovely calm I had from my back massage was disappearing. He said NO NO, were not serving you, you must have a unhappy life. I said PLEASE,just go away, just go away and get me the manager. He proudly told me I AM THE MANAGER, so you leave NOW. I said, ok, do you own this place? NO. OK, I would like to contact the owner. He went off, came back with the a card. May i have your name please I asked him, he push his face into mine and said YES, it is HALEO, or something like that. I'm not sure, even though he spelt it twice very loudly to me with his face even more twisted then earlier while rocking his head back and forth as he pronounced each letter. H A L E O. I got a pen out of my bag , but i was shaking with anger and felt completely humiliated in front of the other dinners and could not write it down. He went off to clear a table next to me, the couple not surprisingly said no to dessert or coffee. At that point most waiters would ask if you enjoyed your meal, but he said , AWW, BUT YOU HAD A GOOD TIME??? as if to say, have you enjoyed my show? you see, I am the boss!

Well the pie seemed like it was a tesco pie and the salad was about the quality a three year old would produce. I hate writing bad reviews, but today cost me £14, and it wasn't worth a cent. Don't bother with this place they were kind to busy to provide good service and the food was less than average.

I hadn't been to Neal's Yard for years and the setting is lovely - and probably it's worth going there for a drink but the food is awful, the worst kind of vegetarian food - stodgy, expensive, dull. Hard to believe that it gets customers when there are so many good eating establishments in Covent Garden. More people should really complain. There's no need for such poor food \at one of London's most famous vegetarian haunts. It feels like the restaurant has been subcontracted out and isn't part of the original vision.

The service was slow - and the choices weren't inspiring, and yet it looked so interesting from the outside. The tiny "square" seemed an oasis, but it wasn't !The Earl Grey came, complete with the tea bag ( Yeuk ) - I had to ask for a lemon slice. My daughter enjoyed the pineapple and mint juice. Oh and even before we had ordered, the waiter said: we only take cash !Ok fine, but it wasn't the best of welcome

My daughter and I were attending a really excellent massage course at Neals Yard Remedies and went to the salad bar for convenience. The food was awful - my soup was inedible and the salad was tasteless. The baked potato was ok. The staff were pushed and we had slow service. When I complained about the food quality the waiter was extremely surly and glared at us on our way out. AVOID THIS PLACE! !Food for Thought looked much nicer.

Highly recommend a trip to Neals Yard in the sunshine. Particularly at lunchtime when they frequently have a Saxophonist and a Pianist to accompany your meal. The food is fine (if a little over priced) and the service is ok. You really go to Neal's Yard for the ambience - for which it is brilliant. The food at Food for Thought is better (same type of food but much better quality).

This is a nice little place to go for lunch, but don't expect anything too spectacular, unless you enjoy spicy or unusual food.We went on a sunny day, sat outside and had sandwiches/jacket potatoes and soup (with the most incredibly baked bread, like a little muffin). The service was friendly and relaxed, and although the drinks were quite expensive the food was freshly cooked and pretty good value. Also the jacket potatoes were absolutely huge!

When I arrived in Neal's Yard I was extremely excited about the colorful courtyard in which this restaurant was located. I knew it would take a lot to disappoint me...but a few minutes later after seating ourselves, my party and I were very disappointed. First of all they have very little for vegans, and even vegetarians. When I asked our server about some of the ingredients in their courses he refused to explain them, stating that since we were vegan we should know. The entire time he ignored us, whilst inappropriately flirting with a group of young girls seated near us, which I could tell they didn't appreciate either. We all left feeling mysteriously nauseous and very dissatisfied with our food. Overall DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. A good alternative in the area would be Mildred's, they're around the same price range, and you won't leave feeling sick and ripped off.

This is a bigdisappointment. Neither the waiters nor chefs know if the cheese is suitable for vegetarian, ie non Rennet, which is unlikely, as the eggs are not free-range, 'normal eggs' as the aggressive chef told me! If you want decent veggie food go elsewhere.

After approximately 20 years I returned to Neal's Yard Salad Bar. I ordered a small mixed salad and a carrot and apple juice. I can only sayhow extremely disappointed I was. The salad consisted some iceberg salad, tasteless beetroot and unripe tomatoe. On the side was a gooey green messof a salad cream and the offer of balsamic vinegar! It was a tasteless, uninteresting and uninspired food - boring and a total rip-off and cost £5.50 for the salad which was served on a small cake plate i.e. indeed small. On paying I mentioned to the older gentleman (dare I call him a gentleman) behind the bar that the food was very much below standard and he immediately began to scream at me and I mean scream saying such things like"even if you vomit I will not give you your money back"... all-in-all it was disgusting food and equally disgusting behaviour. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT UNLESS YOU WANT EXTREMELY TASTELESS, BORING,POOR QUALITY AND POOR VALUE FOOD. I won't even begin on the juice - how can one make a tasteless juice???If this is the sort of thing Londoner's are happy to offer tourists then it is any wonder that the UK food reputation is still what it is.Happily I did eat at some wonderful restaurants in and around Convent Garden but seriously someone should properly evaluate this Salad Bar as it does reflect poorly and really shouldn't be allowed.

Great location but considering it's called a 'salad bar' the large mixed salad at £6.50 consisted of a few bits of lettuce, one tomato chopped up, a few bean sprouts and (bizarrely) whole boiled mushrooms. When we complained we were told never to come back. All in all a very odd experience - not recommended.

On a previous occasion I had had a very nice chocolate cake, so was looking forward to my meal. However, one of my group got served before me despite arriving later. I later discovered that this was because he had been given my main course! I was served with his main course, which was tasteless. By the time I realized this it would have been too late to get a replacement. I told the waiter, who did nothing. When I got the bill I asked that this mistake be taken into account in what I was charged. The waiter said he was unable to help me. I asked to see the manager, but was told by the waiter that I would have to go to him. When I calmly and politely explained the situation to the manager he interrupted me, refused to listen, talked over me and told me that I should have noticed that there were no beans on my plate. He was very agitated, angry and rude. I would certainly not recommend this restaurant to anyone. If you are vegan the available options are very limited and this no longer includes the chocolate cake. The meal came to nearly £20 for 2 mediocre courses and a drink, so is also very poor value. There are lots of vegetarian eateries in the area that understand the concept of customer care, so don't waste your money here.

I had known of this restaurant for many years and decided it was time to give it a try. Not only did I find the food boring, but to then be confronted by a waiter who was more concerned with defending the place than of trying to keep me as a client was a disgrace. I quote ‘well you chose the vegan alternative, what did you expect’. What did he mean? Vegan=boring? I do not think so. Perhaps a visit to Saf on Curtain Road could teach them something about respect for ingredients and the art of presentation. Vegetarian restaurants do not need to look like hippy holiday camps. Sadly I will not return or recommend it to anyone.

My first go at a Vegetarian/Vegan place, and I must confess that I didn't know that it could taste this good! Neals Yard is a hidden gem in the heart of Soho, especailly on a great summers day. The Salad bar is just that, a great Salad bar (although more of a cafe atmosphere) with a Brazilian twist. I also liked the fact that they had a meat section on the last page of the menu. Gives us carnivores something to think about the next time we are in a restaurant that doesn't cater for Vegetarians/Vegans : )
