We stayed at the Orasay Inn for 3 nights. The en suite accommodation was superb and the location ideal for exploring South and North Uist and Benbecula. We were shown to our room by one of the the owners, Isobel, who was very welcoming. Our room was large with french doors opening onto a verandah and superb view of the loch. The bed was comfortable and the room had good cupboards and hanging space. Breakfast was fabulous in a lovely conservatory-style dining room and view of the loch and hills. Allan, the other proprietor, served breakfast (and dinner) while Isobel was the cook. The choices were extensive - lovely fresh local eggs, the best (Stornoway) black pudding ever, fresh mushrooms, ‘proper’! fried potatoes; and the best ever scrambled eggs and smoked salmon I’ve ever had. They served good strong coffee, not wishy washy like some places. We had dinner too at the Orasay Inn. Again a superb selection of seafood and meat, all beautifully cooked and served by our hosts. We enjoyed listening to Isobel and Allan’s local knowledge, interesting and good fun, and they had a small collection of books for guests to browse in the separate sitting room. Absolutely no complaints, great place to stay, 5 star.

We are so glad we had the chance to eat at Isobel & Alan’s restaurant. The food was superb and the portions we’re generous. We shared a seafood platter for our starter and both had the lamb which was cooked to perfection. The views from our table we’re wonderful. The breakfast the next morning was truly the best we had had. The HUGE bowls of fruit on offer were the best we have seen and we have travelled a lot! I am marking on the restaurant and food only. The room we had was pretty basic and small (North American motel style) but had all we needed, the bed comfortable and the linen and towels lovely and fresh. The welcome and friendliness of Isobel and Alan and their staff was lovely. We would definitely recommend to others and if we have to chance to go again, we definitely would.

During a Hebridean hopscotch holiday we had booked a one night stay in the Orasay Inn. We travelled through North Uist on a rather wet and windy Sunday, which meant there was not a great deal open. Arriving at The Orasay inn we hoped they served food. The welcoming Isobel assured us they did and the bar would be open. The menu was amazing. Lots of fresh seafood, steaks, venison and a host of specials. Other guests warned about the portions. The quality of the food was excellent. I had a crab salad which was so tasty followed by venison casserole with veg. A good array of desserts too if you have room! Enjoyed my Uist gin and tonic too. Breakfast was also first class. Cooked Scottish breakfast but also fruit and yogurt too. Eggs royale . Fresh orange juice. Our room was spacious and had a large comfy bed. If you are looking for a place to stay on Uist this is all hotel would be hard to beat. Alan and Isobel are very welcoming

It is clear on all promotional literature for this hotel that booking for lunch is highly recommended. We hadn’t booked but took a chance and we were in luck. The lovely chef who I believe is Isobel who is so friendly and cheery whilst working her socks off explained that it is often not worth buying expensive fresh ingredients or giving staff shifts if they don’t get any customers due to the fact they are off the beaten track in the Outer Hebrides. Which is totally understandable. Our food was simply delicious, fresh, local, well cooked ingredients. Can’t think of anymore words. We will definitely book next time. In fact we want to stay on the hotel. It’s booked up a lot of the time so book early. Lovely independent, family owned business

We were staying in a cottage not far from Orasay and in the visitors' book, there were several favourable comments about this restaurant. So it was natural that we should book a dinner reservation - and we were glad we did. The atmosphere was pleasant and welcoming; and the meal was very good. We both had (different) soups; and for main courses, my wife had a seafood dish and I had lamb shank - both memorable. Also memorable was the view from the dining room, where one could see as far as the islands of Rhum and Skye. Our total bill, including two glasses of wine and generously-sized cups of espresso, was under £60 - not unreasonable for a quality meal in this location.

We followed the signs from the main road (And also following the leaflet from visitouterhebrides.com). It is situated 2.5 miles off the main road, and we TRIED to visit for lunch. When we approached, we were surprised to see that it was not an INN, but was a modern bungalow with INN signage out front. The place looked dead quite but we tried to go in anyway. We were met at the door by the proprietor with a brusque "Can I help you". We said we were wanting lunch, but were told "lunch was by appointment only, and my wife is away shopping, so you can't have lunch, and we are having work done anyway so i Can't help you." This was a bit frustrating as nothing on the visithebrides website to say that food was only by reservations ( and not lunch) . And by the way this is not an INN. It is someone's house who is doing a B&B; business.

Rolling up to a restaurant renown for seafood and asking for vegetarian options can sometimes feel a bit awkward. Not so with the Orasay Inn. They were more than happy to offer a range of vegetarian and vegan options (I selected a vegetable curry and rice) and there was no delay in receiving my meal, even though the restaurant was almost full. Afterwards I was recommended the Carageen for pudding - much to the delight of the chef/owner - and bemusement of some other diners who were interested but didn't want to commit to a "seaweed" dessert. Well, it was delicious! A milky yet uniquely flavoured, set tourine of creaminess, accompanied by flavoursome strawberry compote, as well as whole strawberries. This dish alone will detour me back to the Orasay Inn on my next visit to South Uist; a perfect tummy filler after a day walking on the hills. The Inn is almost a destination in itself with atmospheric views over lochans and mountains, extremely pleasant hosts and a welcoming lounge, whisky bar and dining area. Top notch!

We had an evening meal here as we were staying locally. The views from the conservatory were amazing. A lovely touch being seated in the sitting room whilst we picked drinks and viewed the menu and specials board. Shortly afterwards we were shown to our table and we didn't have to wait long for our starters - a superb seafood platter and lovely homemade soup. Our mains soon followed - monkfish scampi, fish & chips and surf & turf, again all excellent and great choices. There was a nice ambience in the restaurant, busy but not overly so although we did eat relatively early and they were booked up for a number of days to come (so making a reservation a must!). Desserts were also excellent - bread & butter pudding, rhubarb and carageen, a local speciality. I wouldn't say the portions were overly big as some previous reviews have mentioned. Overall, an excellent meal with lovely home cooked food.

The building itself doesn't do the restaurant any justice. The welcome was nice and we were seated in the "lounge" before dinner. The meal again, was nice enough but very expensive. I had a crab cocktail (think posh prawn cocktail) as a starter and it was delicious. It was also large!I then had one of the specials - a Hebridean paella. Lots of different seafood with rice. It included shell on prawns, scallops, mussels, crab and lobster. The rice was beautifully cooked and the whole meal enormous! It was as much an activity as a meal as apart from the scallops everything needed removing from its shell.Mr friend had the crab cakes and then the steak which she said was just as impressive. It is a bit pricey, but the portions are huge and the quality outstanding.

The reception for dinner was nice; sat in the lounge with a drink before being brought in to be seated. The service was friendly and professional. The issue was the food. After reading the reviews of the restaurant I was expecting an excellent culinary experience, especially considering the price. The crab cakes were very good and in good portions. However, 3 of the 4 main meals were bland. I like good food, but I'm not a snob about it. If it tastes good that's all I care about, but with the exception of the lamb, the meals were tasteless and that was really disappointing. Adding a load of salt didn't make much of a difference due to the lack of other flavours. My advice would be to ask the server as she called the only dish we asked about correctly. The other saving grace was the desserts; they were both delicious (apple crumble and cheesecake). For the price we paid and the reputation I expected much more. Very disappointing.

Were spending 3 weeks touring the Outer Hebrides in our motorhome 'Wild Camping' and had tried to plan to be at The Orasay Inn for our Wedding Anniversay, but difficult to plan the exact timing in advance. So arrived without booking and staff tried hard to accomodate us but this they did. The Owners were happy to allow us to park for the night at the Inn, which simply meant that we could have a few drinks and enjoy the evening just that little bit more. We shared the intimate atmosphere with another lovely couple and a team of 'interesting' female slightly over 50 cyclists. The meal was 'lush' the service relaxed, and the Hebridean Single Malt, although very expensive was quite memorable, I had actually finished the bottle (not all on my own I might add), which is probably just as well.Overall, a night to remember in this little 'Oasis' set amongst the barren Hebridean landscape and the lovely people that inhabit it.

I will not condemn the young lady who served us..she was doing her best. But if the owners want to charge top prices they must employ trained, professional staff to enhance the dining experience. My fiance ordered a vodka and tonic which arrived as a slug of vodka with all the bottle of tonic emptied into it, no ice or slice and not stirred. We were shown to a table directly outside the sliding door to the toilets which opened onto a cleaning cuboard / toilet...people were pushing past us to access this. The bottle of wine (grossly marked up at £22 for an £8 value Malbec), had to be sent back to be opened, a jug of water had to be requested 3 times before it arrived and there were no serving spoons provided for the vegetables. As for the food....nice big locally sourced scallops demanded nothing more than to be seared in a little butter with a squeeze of lemon and a twist of black pepper. Instead they were insipid and drowned in a cream an onion concoction which was unpleasant. I had venison and for £25 I expect a decent cut, professionally prepared. I got three strips which were poorly seasoned and overcooked making them tough and tasteless. I don't mind al dente, but almost raw broccoli and cauliflower heads were not nice. Two mains and a bottle of wine cost £72.80.The chef is promoted as being 'one of the best on the Western Isles'. Really? We produce far superior and more inventive dishes at home as amateurs. I think I may now consider going on Masterchef...

We were staying nearby and were impressed by the reviews relating to the restaurant. Young waitress took our drinks and meal order promptly but there were issues in the restaurant area which is clearly in need of refurbishment. Our table looked on to an overturned wheelie bin, weather-beaten fence and shed and rusting vehicles. (Marvelous view indeed!). A radio station was playing as background-music and speech which probably only we could hear. The wine ordered arrived after we got the main course and was plonked on the table-no wine cooler or would we like to try the wine? The bill did not arrive and I had to go and ask for it. We understand the reasons for the price of the meal but expect money to be spent on the dining area for all guests. My fiancé had clams with bacon to start and it was a huge portion. My baked sea trout main was absolutely amazing, also a huge portion. My fiancé had monkfish which was also good. Home made desserts were great. The only minor criticism was that the vegetables could have been a bit warmer. Great selection of seafood, and a fellow diner had surf and turf with home made chips which looked great. The visit was topped off by the fact that the owner has been bottle feeding a baby calf since January, who we got to meet and pet! The Orasay inn is good in parts but it would soon lose customers if the competition was better. The seafood platter as a starter was a good choice but for a place surrounded by sea none of the fish main courses we ordered were very good. We were warned that the side of e paella was enormous and it lived up to its name leaving another of our party struggling with a huge plate which though tasty was a turnoff -why not just reduce the size of the portion? We did hear the lady tell someone on the phone that they were fully booked that night, whether hotel or dining room not sure. This is not a cheap lunch as the menu seemed to be the same as the evening version which is at the upper end on the island. The food was good and filling. The scallop starter was plentiful and moreish. The crab-cakes were just the right consistency served with chilli sauce and salad. The mains came very quickly after the starter so no real rest time which meant we laboured a bit during this course. The mornay had a light sauce and was full of scallops, mussels and prawns served with saffron rice. The gratin was packed with similar fish. A large bowl of carrots, caulie, broccoli & potatoes arrived. Wow too much and these were only meant for the gratin dish. We left at least half the veg, pity I hate waste.Overall nice food but too much too quickly for a lunch and we were well stuffed. The lady was efficient but not overly chatty. We would use again but for an evening meal.

The Orasay Inn was not as I had hoped after reading the reviews. We had dinner there during our summer holidays. There was very little atmosphere with a very stony faced waitress who had trouble breaking a smile. It appeared evident that if you were a resident you were given better service and undivided attention! The food was nice but not worth the very over priced menu which was more suited to city prices not in the middle of Uist!Overall disappointing.

We returned here having first visited 3 years ago. As before, Isobel's cooking is superb, and the choice of seafood is just stunning. My husband tackled the enormous paella whilst I had monkfish - both were just sublime. Starters and desserts were just as stunning. Cannot fault anything!

We received a lovely warm welcome at this establishment during the two visits we made. Unfortunately we weren't able to fulfil our earlier booking but a phonecall to the owner was handled well. We attended later but unfortunately the restuarant was closed due to a wedding so we haven't been lucky enough to sample their cuisine to date. The whisky was rather tasty and a good selection too.

Amazingly good fish, absolutely fresh and cooked to perfection. Surf & turf a great favourite too! We've been several times, and been delighted every time, both in spring and summer.

I've just got home from an unexpected trip to the Western islands that was topped off by a wonderful stay at this hidden beauty of a hotel. The welcome was warm, friendly and typically Hebridean - I was even greeted by the family sheep dog!The accommodation was extremely comfortable and I was afforded all the amenities one would expect from a major city centre establishment with some extra treats thrown in to boot - free wifi, an extra large & luxurious bed and stunning views across the sea to skye! The standard of food was sublime and the quality of service was second to none. I particularly enjoyed the local take on the traditional Paella dish (packed full of fresh Scottish seafood!!), the steak was melt in your mouth perfect, and in disagreement to a previous reviewer from Australia I found the 'Orasay' Curry one of the finest curry dishes this side of Birmingham! The hosts were always available should you require any assistance but not in your face the whole time, which allowed for a blessed sense of freedom and trust - a rarity in these modern times when we feel we are always being monitored! Some may deem the location a little of the beaten track (it is in fact about a mile or so from the main road that runs through the spine of the islands) but I found it perfect and very central for exploring the nearby islands of benbecula, north uist, berneray and eriskay.I have been here numerous times and my mouth salivates at the thought of returning - I can not speak highly enough of the Orasay Inn.

If you like your food cooked well, hot and delicious then the Orasay Inn is the place to go. I am a extremely fussy eater but had no trouble finding dishes from the extensive menu - the crab cakes are superb. We have gone to Orasay for the last three years and the quality and service were always excellent.

Good choice on the menu, very good food, freshest of seafood a must - all well cooked and well served. On top of that, in daylight hours, fabulous outlook to Loch Carnon.

Orsay was recommended by our B&B accommodation and I have to say that it did not live up to our expectations. The menu seemed ok but the food itself was less than impressive. Starters were fine and the wine good but I think the young guy serving would like to have been anywhere else but there. He was nice but lacked flair and enthusiasm. My main problem was with my steak, ordered medium and was delivered practically raw. I have no issue even with medium rare but this was even difficult to cut. I am not afraid to ask for it to be fixed and the waiter was happy to take it back for cooking. It was returned to me with hot gravy and extra scallops on the side (a nice touch), but unfortunately it was still not cooked. I did not eat it and asked for it to be put in tinfoil for the dogs. It was also very expensive and not worth it.

Promoted as something of a food "destination", the Inn is less than prepossessing, and while quaint, is certainly not up there with the best that this area has to offer. After over a week of sampling some of the finest seafood in the Western Isles, it was time to try something different - and perhaps this was an error? Nonetheless an item listed as an "Orasay" curry suggested that perhaps some original thought had gone into its creation. Alas, not so. An enormous serve of almost bile-green/yellow curried chicken with a serve of coloured (?saffron) rice was brought to the table. No accompaniments. Immediately the smell, and ultimately the flavour of a "Keens" powder came to mind - reminiscent of impoverished student days. The end result was 24hrs of significant stomach upset suffered by the hapless diner!A smallish bowl of ox-tail soup - satisfactory, and served with bread (no butter offered) was the other meal at our table. There is pub food in South Uist from Polochar north, as well as offerings at Hebridean Jewelery and the small "cafe" at the Askermish Golf Course that better represent the area. Try these first!

My partner and I visited the Orasay Inn on the recommendation of a work colleague. The Inn doesn't seem to be in the nicest of locations with a power station and a fuel distribution works nearby, but you would hardly notice as your view is directed across the hills of the Uists and out to the sea. The menu is extensive and there are plenty of seafood options - I missed the back page with the non seafood dishes but was very happy with the range of dishes on offer. Our starters were very good, particularly the crab cakes. We had a nice table with views out over the water. Very big portions with the main meals, monkfish and cod - which were both lovely. We were disappointed with our desserts though, which were expensive for what seemed like shop bought meringue nests. My major complaint was that we seemed to be rushed through our meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful, however I got the feeling that as a last minute booking we were taking up space and each course was rushed through. We had a three course meal, with tea afterwards all in 45 minutes! I could have used more time between each course!

We ate there as we were staying in self catering closeby. The waiting room was comfortable and interesting. The restaurant had a brilliant view but we found it a bit too warm. There were not many people in, yet the service was a bit slow. The food was OK, but nothing to write home about.

If you're on South Uist in the first place you are looking for an unconventional holiday, so why not try an unconventional eaterie. The Orasay Inn is actually a small (make that VERY small) hotel but it "welcomes" non-resident diners. We were living nearby so decided to go in personally to book dinner. The first surprise was that despite the quaint name it's a post-war suburban bungalow. And a wee bit scruffy. The proprietor "greeted" us in what must be the world"s smallest hotel lobby, and made it clear we'd arrived at an awkward time. Undaunted (there isn't a great deal of choice in the area) we booked a table for 8.00pm. Only residents get a 7.30 slot we were told. When we returned the proprietor was no more charming than on our previous encounter, but the 1970s interior, and excellent seafood menu made for a surprisingly enjoyable and memorable evening.

Sorry to be writing this but we have not had such an awful food experience at this price in a long while - the place itself is drab and dated (umbrella plant and dried grasses as "decor" in the dining room, plastic bound menus falling to bits - you get the picture) and pretentious - you get asked to sit on plastic sofas in the cramped little lounge while your order is taken and prepared. There was a long list of fish under "catch of the day" on the blackboard but the young man taking our order couldn't confirm whether the fish was freshly caught - or much else.... we asked how the scallops were cooked and were told "you get about 6 or 7". Sweet but useless. The food was anything but sweet - rubbery mushrooms in cheese, and gloopy crab cakes, followed by scallops (7 of them) drowned in white wine and onion sauce (!) and a soggy selection of mixed veg on the side. Monkfish tails were in soggy batter. The wine list was dull (on laminated card provided by the importer) with only the house wine available by the glass. We should have trusted our instincts and left before we got out of the car - the fact is that in Uist there's nowhere else to go, but even so we wish we had. Sorry, but this was not what we are used to for over £60 - hopefully others have a different experience.

Having read all the 'rave' reviews about the food we were looking forward to a nice meal. If what you are looking for is generous portions, plenty of choice and a good selection of fish and other seafood then you won't be disappointed. However, based on other reviewers' comments the experience and food fell short of our expectations. At best this was average food and rather expensive for that.Whether we caught the restaurant in an 'off' night we don't know. Therefore if you go you pay your money and you take your chance!

We went with high hopes and in general were a little disappointed. Reception was friendly and welcoming and we were given a table with a wonderful view. Service was good if at times perhaps a little quick. Starter of vegetable and shellfish soup was good as was the crab salad.Main course of scallops in a grey gooey mush containing onion and mushroom with admittedly plenty of scallops was awful. I suspect it had been reheated in the microwave so that the scallops were well overdone and tough. Are the scallops kept in a deepfreeze before cooking rather than fresh? The vegetables however were well cooked and varied. At the prices I would hesitate to return and would certainly not have the scallops as served.

There are 2 menus to chose from - a la carte and board. Unfortunately the a la carte was so tempting I've never managed to sample the slightly simpler (but equally enticing) fare from the board during my 3 night stay. I sampled the duck, seafood and steak and all were cooked as requested and presented with plentiful side dishes. I'd particularly recommend the Surf and Turf - fillet steak with scallop and prawn in a lovely sauce. Each evening the accompanying roasted root vegetables were fantastic - particularly enjoyable at this time of year. It's going to be difficult returning home now to my own (not bad) cooking. Thoroughly recommend the Orasay for a good meal out.

This was our experience. We heard mostly great things about this restaurant so we made it a point to have lunch here before our time was up on South Uist. There was only one car out in front so we thought the chances of it being open for lunch were slim. A dishevelled man came rushing out of a side door asking us if we have booked a table, to which I replied that I didn't and he went on to say that normally people book here for lunch and dinner. But he escorted us in to the waiting area and asked us to sit while he went to see if this woman who would open for lunch. What immediately assailed our senses was the sour stench of unwashed humans, mingled with old food smells. We were desperate to leave without making a big fuss but he quickly drove off to contact the woman in charge of lunch, which left us no chance to get away without being rude. When he got back, he went immediately into the kitchen, we followed, knocking on the door and telling him that if it was too much trouble we'll just come back another time, to which he replied that he just turned on the kitchen cooker. He left us no option or opening for a quick getaway, we were stuck there for lunch. We found a table for two set up in what would have been a nice spot for dining if it wasn't also filled with leftover furniture stacked up around the room. We tried to ignore the peeling wallpaper in the corner and the junky area viewed out the window of the house next door. The smell wasn't as stong in the dining area but it still lingered there. Finally the woman who would be serving us, burst into the room and introduced herself. She was bright and cheery so that immediately made us feel a little more relaxed. I just wanted a token amount of food to hurry through this experience so I ordered the crab cakes appetizer and my husband ordered Chicken Supreme which he thought very nice. The crab cakes were tasty though with a cold centre. What was off-putting though was when she served us, her belly was exposed, which wasn't a pretty sight. I felt rather shocked by the whole negative experience but after the next day's meal out on South Uist, I realized that was probably the best it gets. Homecooking only it is for me if I'm ever back for a visit to these isles.

It was nice to be rememberd from our visits last year, when we had a pleasant discussion with La Patronne after dinner. The food was excellent, as usual, and the service was quick once we had ordered. We had booked 3 nights stay here but were a day late arriving as our ferry was cancelled, owing to fog. A 7 unit site with 2 showers with a toilet in the same room [En-suite]. One of the rooms was, imo, suitable for disabled guests. The facilities were clean with no extra charge for the showers. As the area was "remote" from the main site - hundred yards away and out of sight of the main site - access through the gate, into the shower/toilet block and chemical disposal point was by padlock code or Door Key Code. It worked and probably necessary as adjacent to the main road but slightly annoying. Good water supply and Grey water runoff easily accessed. The most expensive site we used in our holiday through the Outer Hebrides but West Harris Trust is a Community Charity so any profits presumably channelled back into Community Projects

We have just enjoyed a stunning meal at Number 30. Beautiful seafood chowder, then we shared the cod & seabass main dishes, very differently prepared, both delicious. We couldn’t resist the cranachan & pannacotta desserts, deliciously light & yummy. All in a peaceful airy room, with friendly attentive service.
