Old Ship Aground in West Somerset

A very good dog friendly pub with rooms. Rooms clean, food brilliant, friendly staff and dogs allowed everywhere. Only thing that could be improved is the guest entrance to the hotel, very tired and need of updating. Otherwise a brilliant stay!

Really, really disappointing. I had booked for 16 Ladies to have lunch at the Old Ship Aground. This was booked in May of this year. I know it gets busy and were a large group, ( hence booking 5 months before we were coming ). My phone number was taken as well. We travel down from Bristol to catch the Steam train in to Minehead. We walked to the pub, only to find NO booking was made. I have checked my phone records to find that I DID phone and a booking WAS made. Can you imaging how embarrassing this was for me , as the organiser of our annual Ladies who lunch day trip. Also trying to find some where to accommodating 16 Ladies for Sunday lunch at 12 noon was not an easy task. Staff didn't seem to care and no expansion was given. 16 very unhappy and disappointed Ladies.

Stunning location, great food and friendly staff.... the views across the Quay from our room are stunning. We shall return for further visits in the area of Minehead... a hidden gem.

We booked late Saturday afternoon for lunch on Sunday, honestly if you are in Minehead, you absolutely must go here for your carvery lunch, it’s incredible, so much veg, choice of meats, one of the best Sunday lunches I’ve had in a long time!

Sunday carvery lunch: had reserved a table weeks prior. Getting seated and drinks was a bit chaotic but we got there eventually. Waited a while to be called to the carvery but when we got there the server was very friendly and a good choice of meat was on offer. Some vegetables had ran out (cauliflower cheese, peas, carrots) so had to wait for those and the server said cauliflower cheese would be another 5-6 minutes so would bring some through to our table. That didn’t happen! Food was cool by the time we arrived back stmt the table but was edible and nicely cooked. Ordered dessert and drinks. Dessert came but no drinks so had to reorder those. Not enough staff serving or behind the bar and carvery food too slow coming out. There should be a back up dish for everything in order to replenish when needed. Sadly this was unorganised and a let down. Room for improvement.

Went there twice. Each time asked for a pint. Each time the measure was short. When I asked the bar maid to fill the pint, she muttered and walked off.

Popped in without booking and found a table fairly easily, it was around 1.30pm on Friday. The pub is decorated with lots of marine ephemera and there’s a lot to look for if you’re playing I Spy! We had fish and chips, the portion size was generous and it was delicious, we were very impressed! We couldn’t manage a dessert unfortunately.

Horrible manager treats guests despicably.. food was bland refused a refund it’s a real shame I’ve been using this establishment for 20+ years and it’s never been this bad. I will not return need a miracle to turn this around. Real shame.

We walked the length of the Minehead beach to visit the RNLI lifeboat station and gift shop. It's something I do everytime I visit and this pub is perfectly situated overlooking the harbour at the end of a long walk along Quay street. Great place for a drink overlooking the boats when the weather is nice. Service could be more on point. The staff just need a little more training and to be attentive when folks are standing waiting for service.

Another lovely lunch at the Old Ship Aground. Thanks to Anne and her team for going out of their way to accommodate our brother who has special dietary needs. We always look forward to our visit when we're in Minehead on our holiday, we will be back for more of the great food and wonderful welcome.

Had an amazing meal this evening. We hadn't booked but the team found room for us to eat and it was absolutely beautiful. The menu was brilliant and the food outstanding. We had our 2 dogs with us who were made to feel just as welcome as we were. If we visit Minehead again, which I truly hope we will, we will most definitely return to this lovely pub. Went to Minehead for few days, found this pub, spent post of the first day there. It was very busy but still very friendly and personal. As the night went on, could not feel more welcome if we tried. Wanna give big shout to Sam in front of the house and locals, made us feel very welcome and looked after us. Can’t beat pub with open log fire. Definitely will be going back. Booked an evening for my sister and myself we had fish chips and peas., the chips are not freshly made and Of the frozen type ., And when it came only 10 Horrible fried, frozen chips on the plate.., Very unhappy for the price.,

I took the precaution of booking a table using their system. My only real request was that we had a table with plenty of light as my sister has dreadful sight,I received a confirmation including my request. Alas when we arrived on the sunday as arranged things were not so great. My wife went a little ahead and was directed to a dark,gloomy table from which we moved to one with a window. My wife and I went to order drinks and were told to order them in the public bar( where there was live entertainment). So we were stood at the bar with the entertainer including his guitar directly behind us. Whilst making the treck to the restaurant area (where there were plenty of well lit tables unlaid) we collected our very average food from the carvery. All in all not an experience that the four of us would be willing to repeat.

The pub is on the seafront over looking the harbour which is lovely. We couldn’t fit through the main door as we have a double pushchair we did ask at the bar if there was another entrance however was told there wasn’t so we had to get our toddler out which was fine as she was going into a Highchair however we had to get our newborn out which was ideal, and had to carry the pram through the bar area to the back of the pub, we were put which we felt like we were just put out of the way of the rest of the pub. At the back of the pub were we sat was two double doors which could have be opened for us to let us in with the double pram but wasn’t. The food was alright nothing special could get it nicer from other places in minehead.

Excellent service, great food and relaxed atmosphere. Food came out quickly and was very tasty and fresh. Bar area can get cramped quickly but no complaints, would return.

We had a table for 7 booked for 2pm. Arrived a few minutes early & finally after a rediculously long wait that included us watching staff just walk by & ignore us & another wipe down a coffee machine & fridge for 10 minutes while ignoring the ever growing queue at the bar we were seated in the restaurant area at 2.20 to the be told we would need to go back to the bar to place our order! No table service anymore. So back to the bar we went for another long wait. Eventually after being ignored yet again whilst the girl behind the bar served a group then walk away outside leaving us standing there, invisible my sister asked if we could order. She received a filthy look but our order was taken. Now bearing in mind we had 7 people in our party for Sunday lunchtime the manager thought it was funny we should order 4 carverys & actually laughed at us! Our food arrived & our carverys collected we enjoyed our meals. But at 3.50 the manager then came to tell us our alloted 2 hours were almost up & that we had just 10 minutes left, & that as we had booked online this was clear in the email confirmation & they needed the table back for a booking in the empty restaurant at 4pm, but did we want to see the desert menu. My sister pointed out that now with just 9 minutes left no thank you, we clearly didn't have time. Never before have we been made to feel so unwelcome. We waited until 15.59 & then left the table. So of our 2 hour slot we actually spent almost 50 minutes of it as a combined time waiting at the bar. We walked down the road to the neighbouring pub to enjoy a welcoming early evening spending money we would have spent in the Old Ship had they not been so rude.

The Old Ship Aground is a must for us when we stay in Minehead. The meals are always good and the staff friendly. This time, although we hadn't booked we were found a place on a reserved table for an hour. Our meal was served quickly. Very simple, cod and chips, but we both commented on how delicious and satisfying it was. A walk back into the town on a warm evening completed a very enjoyable experience.

Went for Sunday carvery. Wouldn't return again. Very long queue for food - largely because they lay out some of the veg right in front of where the chef is carving so he can't get on to the next person while people are serving themselves their veg. Bad system. My pork was lovely but there wasn't any crackling left. my husband's beef was chewy and the couple on the table next to us left their beef for the same reason. a lucky labrador had the bits that we couldn't eat. The green beans were very watery and there was barely any cheese in the cauliflower cheese. To make matters worse the gravy was thin and everything was almost cold. Shame because the staff are lovely and the setting is great.

We went for lunch and had the most amazing cavery plenty of meat and big selection of vegetables although it was mother's day so extremely busy everyone was quick to serve us and we had a lovely sticky pudding lovely meal highly recommend this place

Stayed at the Old Ship Aground for one night, there had been an issue with the bedroom window which we had been contacted about before our stay, communication and service from all staff was incredible, nothing was too much trouble.

Lovely building and very helpful staff, food wise my pulled pork toastie was okay, my wife’s sausage and mash needed better sausages and gravy. Great selection of local beer.

We dropped on this pub almost by accident, went to look at the harbour and there it was. We booked in for the carvery and were not disappointed. Really tasty meal, everything prepared with care and the meat cooked to perfection and really tender. Well done to the chef! Will definitely revisit next time we are in Minehead.

We are relatively local and go to Minehead frequently, and always pass this pub, smells from the kitchen were always fab so this particular Sunday we thought we would pop in and see if we could get a table for a bit to eat We were just checking th menu in the porch when a chap came out, I think to check if any outside tables were being used or needed clearing anyway we had a laugh with him and as he went ink we thought we would try it. We went in and were seen almost immediately by a young girl at the bar, all tables around us looked reserved, we asked if they had a table for two, she looked as said no, so we said thanks and turned to leave, however the chap we saw outside (possibly the bar manager?) said wait and he looked said something to the girl and said we could take the but table by the door, marked as reserved, we were really surprised and thanked the chap and sat down, almost immediately the young girl was back t9 take our drinks order and leave us menus. We took a look and decided to go for the carvery, Then she left and not long after another girl appear asked if we had ordered drinks, confirmed we had then she took our food order, we said two carvery’s. She scribbled that down and went, now we weren’t sure what to do, where was the carvery? The drinks came and nothing said about the food, we waited again then asked that same young chap what do we do, he then explained it was on a rota system we would be collected when it was our turn. Kind of odd we thought I mean if we hadn’t asked might still be sat there wondering. Was this a thing left over from covid? Anyway we waited must have been over 20 mins then finally someone came over, we were led through to the back of the pub, possibly the restaurant, Three meats. Potatoes, veg, yorks etc, the beed was too rare for us so I has a slice of pork and turkey, hubby had the turkey. The roasties were nice, the carrots were too firm for us. Cauliflower cheese was nice, the stuff was rock hard, my knife couldn’t even penetrate it, wasn’t chancing my teeth, My pork was thick cut and fatty, the slice of cracking was too soft and had been out off when the server used his hands to pull it apart.. The food was ok, as we ate as we were hungry and had waited so long, it wasn’t bad but we wouldn’t go back for that again, might try something off the menu, They also need to explain when you order about the rota system, and that it maybe a wait for “your turn” and not being the conventional carvery setting. Customer service was fab though. And we appreciate being found a table and not being turned away,

Six of us went for a Sunday lunch. We had not booked. When we arrived the inside bar area was fairly busy but the restaurant was empty. We ordered drinks and roast dinners at the same time to be told rudely that "I don't need to know what you want - its a carvery, and anyway, we are fully booked" We asked if we could sit outside to eat instead, which was agreed. After 40 minutes, I went in to see what was happening and in case they had forgotten about us. "we are very busy, you'll just have to wait" was the reply. Seconds later someone came and called for our table to go to the carvery. The server was a lovely guy and the food was AMAZING. Everything was so tasty and hot. We found some cutlery and took our food outside to eat it. It started to rain quite heavily whilst we were half way through so we asked ( as the restaurant is still empty) could we finish our meals inside. NO!! was the reply. We would have stayed in there all afternoon and had more drinks and deserts. Instead we left because the staff were just so horrible.

Ooooh I feel like I am going to go into a very happy food coma. Both the starters and mains were delicious. Carrot and cumin soup, Duck and port pate to start. Super tasty and both good sized portions. We followed by both having Cod and Chips. Well cooked and generous portions left us able to contemplate dessert only for a microsecond for fear of being unable to walk for being too full. Great food at reasonable prices, traditional setting with friendly staff. Highly recommended!

Great food and service, tables are set spacious apart so there was room to accommodate our golden retriever without getting in others way. We had the special catch of the day and scampi and both were superb. Would definitely recommend it.

What a disappointment. Booked the day before for Sunday lunch and to watch the rugby so booked a specific table near the tv. Arrived early to find table already taken by a large group. Then informed they had just ordered their food. Also informed they do not normally turned on. Staff not helpful or understanding at all. And attitude stunk. Left as extremely annoyed as having been assured that our booking was in place. Greedy management wanted the larger booking so let the large group take our place. Will never set foot in there again as frequent visitor. Will advise that if you book you get it in writing.
