Old Forge Toby Carvery in Stevenage

On arrival at my booking time, I waited for several minutes at Check-In. Then a lady staff member rushed by saying: "back in a sec". She never came back! After 5 more minutes, I walked into the table area to find a member of staff; he seated me. Jody was my server, she was most helpful (but couldn't explain the strange behaviour of her colleague). Good ending but a very unsatisfactory start.

I chose to have a carvery takeaway and boy way I disappointed, meal was cold when received, meat and potatoes were tough, the sicky toffee pudding was tough and as dry as if it had been left in the microwave too long

Shocking service even considering it was a Sunday. Booked a table in advance at 15:30 so not quite lunch rush or dinner service, wasn’t overly busy on arrival. After being seated and greeted things got off to a positive start but this was unfortunately the highlight of the experience. The elderly gentleman who was serving the carvery was more miserable than a kid without a present on Christmas Day. He deliberately ignored my request for which part of the meat joint I would like and served me dry tough beef. As we had children with us we also ordered a few sides which we thought would be out reasonably quick but this was not the case, having ordered 3 mains and starters the mains were all but finished and still no sign of the starters/sides. After speaking to our server and requesting to cancel them as they now wouldn’t be eaten we were told they’d be right out and after I insisted the waitress begrudgingly said she would cancel them. We then ordered two deserts for the children which after some 25 minutes still hadn’t arrived I asked the manager for the bill. He never returned. Eventually the deserts turned up and were missing the flakes which it said were included. I asked again for the bill and mentioned I had a blue light card. I was taken through instructions as to how to find the QR code on the BL app to then be told “oh we don’t do blue light discount on Sundays.” Overall a poor experience, it’s a shame as I was here a few weeks ago midweek and it was delightful. Word to the wise. DON’T come on a Sunday.

Just visited the Toby in Stevenage and I would like to say a massive thanks to Julie from the minute we walked through the door she was so welcoming, she couldn’t do enough for us.

Came here for lunch, food and atmosphere was good. Our sever Abigail was amazing, polite friendly and attentive, noticed straight away when to ask if we needed more drinks, clear the plates away ect very impressed.

Went to the Old forge Toby carvery for dinner today, amazed as always at the value for money and freshness of all the food served.

Sunday 5th September @ 18:30, The “general manager” (female with a pink cartoon lanyard) was extremely rude and unprofessional when myself and my girlfriend arrived to enquire about availability of a table without booking. She made us feel very uncomfortable and embarrassed that we hadn’t booked even though we was just asking on the off chance that something might be available as a walk in customer. On the plus side, AAron was a perfect server.

Attended on a Sunday evening and pub very busy with long queues for carvery. Abrupt greeting on arrival. Hand sanister at door was hidden behind a door and one to be used at carvery deck was not working. Kids walking around venue instead of being seated. 4 choices of meat and plenty of veg. Some veg dried up or empty.

I would of rated it higher if I liked the roast potatoes because for what I got the price was good . Good price shame the roast potatoes were abit rank they were badly burnt I couldn’t eat them had to Chuck most out for what I had I had to eat the inside then chuck the rest away , I wasted £6 on roast potatoes no way would I buy them again or recommend them to anyone. The stuffing was burnt I liked the Yorkshire puddings Mash Cauliflower GravyPigs in blanket Vegetables Turkey Very nice creamy mash , lovely vegetables . The beef was tough & didn’t eat much I wouldn’t buy it again . I’m not too keen on the car very myself but there was some nice grub to eat.

Not been here for a while ' due to covid ' but me and my son went here for breakfast on 21/08/21 and once again the breakfast and staff was fantastic .. All you can eat with unlimited soft drinks for the both of us just over £16... WOW fantastic value for money. The staff was so friendly and made us welcome :)

My server today was a fantastic girl called charlotte.She was absolutely exceptional. She was polite, funny and more then helpful. She made out time at the carvery amazing, could not have asked for a more perfect waitress. Thank you.

Decided to go to save cooking today.Serve was very poor had to ask for our drinks then my wife’s came up wrong. When challenged we were told that’s what was poured!!No carrots or mash available for the dinner.Standards have definitely slipped here as this was usually very good.

Myself and my family had a lovely carvery meal today, it was fantastic food served with smiles and so much help and politeness. Arron was our server he was so lovely and nothing was too much to ask. He was quick with the bill and asking if we wanted Anything else. We where served by josh who carved the meat he was polite and very helpful. Thank you all for your polite staff and lovely food.

We arrived at 6.30 on Sunday for a table that was booked had to que 20 minutes to get seated and then another hour to get called to join another que to get food, don’t bother it’s so disorganised. My plate was handled 4 times by staff and none of them sanitised before handling it let’s hope I don’t get covid or something else. The table service needs re thinking why not just order you’d food and bring it out

We always get a warm welcome and excellent service from our helpful waiter, Arron. He remembers our drink preferences, brings them very quickly, and engages in friendly chat.

Me and my uncle come here every Thursday around the same time as we love the food the friendly staff. One person stands out, Aaron the server always greats us is always so friendly and upbeat and knows how to keep the customers happy

Chef just slopped our food on plates and 4 out of 6 people ended up with really bad stomachs. Will never go back. Only reason it got one star was the waiting staff.

Excellent! Better than ever. Food was really good, service was excellent. Great value for money, hot counter has screens in place, I think I prefer the server serving my food, it was fresh, well cooked and nicely presented. Thankyou for a wonderful visit.

Got a takeaway via deliveroo... Never again! Ordered "chicken strips" for £2.99 and got 3 soggy nuggets (see photo) and garlic mushrooms which didn't taste of anything. Whilst I realise they are a starter it's a very small portion and equates to virtually £1 a piece of chicken! Ordered a roast.. no Yorkshire pudding, no pigs in blankets, and loaded roast potatoes which weren't loaded just plain!!! Won't be ordering from here again bad value and 1/2 order missing

Lovely meal out, but was shocked to see the host seat a table of 7 in the current climate where it’s meant to be a maximum of 6 to reduce the spread of COVID

Booked a table for 4pm today, Seated straight away, drinks order taken and our server explained the new rules. Mains were good (carvery) (no room for dessert!) & really good service with check backs on food and refill drinks, Going by my receipt our servers name was Adam? So thank you for good service

First time my family and I have been out to enclosed place to eat since lockdown. The lady who served us was so attentive and lovely. I don’t know her name but she had beautiful purple hair and really went the extra mile to made us feel at ease and especially with my grandad and little Daughter.

Ordered through Just Eat. When no delivery had been made after an hour and 15 minutes I called the restaurant to get an ETA. I was advised the driver had just turned up and would be with me in a few minutes, which he was.The food was stone cold and part of my order was missing. I completely take in to account that this might also be partly the fault of Just Eat but surely the staff can ensure the order is complete. I made an order a month ago and the exact same thing happened. I regret giving them the benefit of the doubt.I called the restaurant to tell them part of the order was missing only to be told there was nothing they could do and I'd have to request a refund. I found staff to be quite unhelpful. I understand they may be busy but a little customer service never hurt!Aside from the food being cold, the portion size was tiny and had hardly any vegetables. I will not be using this restaurant again.

I booked a table for 17:30. Arrived on time. Waited 5 mins at the door to check in. Told my table not ready and to wait outside. Waited for 25 mins along with 20 plus people. My name was shouted and I went in. Waited again. Taken to a table and we sat down. Looked around and checked out the menu on line. Time ticked by. Waited 20 mins and still no one had approached us so I went and found a waitress. I asked if she could explain the procedure as we had been seated but no further communication. She started with ^ you were told^ .... I was ^told^ nor informed of any procedures. It continued to go down hill. Terrible customer service. No social distancing space whilst waiting to be seated. No service at all. Not asked to join the track and trace app. Not an experience I will plan again not advise or recommend. I left and will not return. Had a much more pleasant and customer service friendly experience at a fast food restaurant who you could learn something from.

10:30 table booked for breakfast served at gone 11:00 and only half the menu left. No apology. I was refunded. Not good service.

myself and my girlfriend visited this restaurant on Sunday the 23rd Aug. Considering how busy the place was, and noticeably some of the staff were a little stressed, they were also very accommodating. A group of gypsy travellers were in a section of the restaurant and were being quite noisy. The waiter with a neard apologised for the racket.Soon after we got out meals, a table was knocked over by one of the gypsies and so they were asked to leave. This man was very drunk and thus started being threatening to the staff. The staff were never rude, but firm in asking him to leave. He got very close to the gentleman with the beard and personally threatened him very nastily. It took 6 staff members to eventually persuade him to simply stagger out the door. I just wanted to congratulate the staff for their courage against someone who believes they are invincible and for the way they kept their cool. It was a tough and sensitive situation which could have almost definitely been a lot worse.

First time we have visited since lockdown. Very clean. Staff friendly. You get everything put on your plate for you and we got plently. Good choice of veg along with 3 meats. Looking forward to our next visit.

Parking OK, ramp entrance so OK for wheelchair access but not much space inside as most tables are steps. Staff weren't great as they were busy so couldn't get you their time. Carvery food did have a good choice but weren't warm or hot, meat was over cooked, Yorkshire pudding was so hard you couldn't eat it. Toilets weren't clean or tidy. Tables were dirty aswell.

The food and staff were very lovely, we had a really good overall experience. However the fact that the person serving all of the carvery was not wearing a mask nor gloves was very off putting. Considering the current situation and how masks will be mandatory from tomorrow I don’t see how someone handling many many customers food would not be wearing any type of protection. Please try and implement this as we should feel as comfortable as possible in this time.

So it’s Sunday 7.30pm walking into the Toby absolutely delighted had a booking couldn’t wait to eat my roast dinner. Told by the host have you not had a call which no we haven’t do he tells us sorry we only have beef left first hiccup but that was fine a nice beef roast dinner lovely. Sit down order drinks go upto servery. There is another family being served so we wait 5-10 minutes then the server walks upto us and says got no meat left as he pulls all the crispy onions and veg on to the middle of the hot plate were the beef should be and says yeah that’s it I can chuck some sausages in out the back. At this point I’m absolutely disgusted he let us stand and wait knowing he had no food left then wasn’t bothered about how he spoke to the customer and that was that. We found our waiter told him we were leaving as there was no food he was apologetic which is the only positive of this review. We walked out and went to a different restaurant for dinner. Not impressed I didn’t get my roast considering the restaurant is open till 10pm and by 7.30 even with a reservation they had run out of meat not very good for the home if the roast. On Monday I contacted Toby via instagram they responded and told me to email customer care which I did at 9am Monday morning. With not even an automated reply by Wednesday I contacted again by instagram and got a reply about chasing it up. I have had no further contact from them and I’m really disappointed that Toby Carvery treat there customers like this. Absolutely shocking

I went along last Sat 11/07/20 for a breakfast the food was really good and the staff was just fantastic. As soon as i walked in i was made very welcome. The chap behind the bar taking money explained the new rules due to covid 19 he was so polite with a big welcoming smile. The Chef was great he can cook a great breakfast he even brought toast out to me. A big thank you to all staff, i will defiantly be back soon .

Cannot believe how much i had to pay for what can only be described as a mediocre lunch. Cost is disgraceful.

This is second visit in a couple of weeks, first visit only had gammon on, at 7.30 also in the gravy area, no gravy, dishes of sauces empty and very messy. 2nd visit 7.30 again the food was dried up and cold, once again only one choice of gravy, again no sauces only empty dishes.the staff were over worked. Sad as enjoyed going to this carvery in the past but now very sloppy, needs more staff to ensure customers get what they paid for. The carver had to get us more veg, then go again into the kitchen and get the gravy. We do not expect sloppy untidy areas and expect the full range of meats at 7.30 in the evening. Management need to sort out this once well managed carvery.

I have been to this carvery numerous times in the past but never on a Thursday evening before. We made a booking as usual promptly sat down polite and efficient service however not given or offered a drink until eating main course then disappointed by carvery staff who were absent from the carvery and we waited with other guests no communication from other staff to tell chefs we were waiting. The meat portion size was very small. The Beef was overcooked. The vegetables were severely overcooked.

Booked a table here for carvery lunch on our way down to Elstree.Initial experience good, being seated promptly and drinks orders taken.I ordered a fresh orange juice, but they had run out and without discussion I was brought a fizzy orange.My choice of lamb and gammon from the carvery were well cooked anf flavoursome.However, my wife's choice of beef turned out to be stringy, tough and lacking in flavour. The accompanying veg were also very bland.Her comments to the waitress were met by an unconvincing "I'm sorry about that"Overall, disappointed with our visit since we have been to many Toby's around the country, and thisn one ranks amongst the worst.

Took the family out for breakfast on the run up to Christmas. And had some lovely coffee and a full English. From the help yourself buffet. Staff were freindly and welcoming. The Christmas tree looked fab. The only negative is that it looks a bit run down and tired on the inside. But otherwise fab. And the prices were pretty good too. We'll in touch with the price you'd pay at a famous fast food restaurant.

Great place for easy food, not too unhealthy and very reasonable prices. Very family friendly and great staff. Never had any major issue and always a quick eat with a young family.

Two of us arrived at 7.40pm to have dinner. We were turned away by a man who looked like the manager for the evening. He said 'its bookings only for tonight'... when we said we were only a table for two he stared at his screen and said 'we have a large booking and only enough meat for them' we looked at the meat ok the counter and there was plenty. We asked how big the table was coming in, he stumbled his words and replied with '12'We left, got in the car and booked a table for 8.30pm which was the next available slot.We arrived, there was still plenty of meat (half a Turkey, untouched, a leg of lamb and half a gammon joint) and no table of 12 in sight.As someone that comes to this carvery frequently, I'm absolutely appalled by this.

Horendous experience. We went for Christmas dinner, and honestly ended up having the worst Christmas ever.

From start to finish had a great experience. Our waitress Charlotte and other Staff were friendly and helpful as always . Thanks for an enjoyable day

We were shown to our table and our lovely waiter was called Aaron , nothing was too much trouble for him. Food was delicious and being later in the day there was no queue which is alway great. We had a starter and a dessert ( which we shared between two) didn’t want to ruin the main event

Our work had our Christmas meal here as we all love a good old carvery and normally very happy with the service and food an everything but not this visit the table was not set probably the bread that came with our starters were crusts and stale we had more butter then bread that was all 8 of us I must admit not just one or two also when it came to getting the carvery there was a small que of people nothing to worry about only we were waiting a good 10 minutes while the chefs had a conversation in the kitchen and by the time they did come out the que was about 20 deep also the chocolate brownie pudding 6 people ordered not one of them ate it all as it did not taste nice the bar had also ran out of Budweiser the only beer they like so that was also disappointing

I was found a table quick time. My food was delicious, & my server (Lilly) was first class. I have eaten in this Toby about 7 times & also been to many others around the UK, & I have to say my food last night equalled the best & my server beat the rest

Toby carvery sounds cheap because you can go up and get extra veg... once you get your meat veg is what you can go and get seconds if you want to its like having sunday lunch every day usually the food is great even in the morning before lunch at 12.00 breakfast is good value for money

Booked a table in advance knowing it would be busy lunchtime on Sunday. Queuing out of the door to get to desk. Some potential customers in front of us turned away that had not booked a table. Taken to table at far end of restaurant, passing queue for carvery. Joined queue for carvery, there was 35+ customers in front of us. Good choice of meats and vegetables. Meal was good.

I ordered a fish dish which took ages to come, and when it did come it was terribly fishy and smelly. The manager defended the dish and insisted that I had eatened the dish and had paid for it. I had only taken a few bites and stopped after finding it unbearable, and was starving. After much protestation, they agreed to offer a substitute dish, but that did not arrive and in the end, they decided to throw us out. They treated me, a customer like a crook! Unbelievable!

The food wasn't too bad, but the service was poor. I waited to get seated. I then decided to get a drink from the bar. There were 3 men sitting on the stools at the bar & the woman serving was more interested in gossiping with them than serving. I did notice a female member of staff wearing glasses walking around doing nothing. I saw her at the till when I went to the bar for a drink, only she wasn't serving anyone. She then strolled off & started doodling at the desk where people walk in to wait to be seated. I wondered why she couldn't have served me beforehand When I had eventually finished my food I was presented with the bill relatively quickly, but when it came to paying, it was like no one wanted my money. I had to go up to the bar to pay in the end. There were only 2 waiting staff that I thought did a good job tonight, one was young with blond hair & the other was wearing a white shirt with black & grey patterns on it

Have to wait to be seated when members of staff see you walk in and walk off from serving station to assist other members of staff to get dressed then come over and ask you to wait while refilling local louts pint that not even empty when stood with hungry children whilst giving dirty looks shocking service should of said was here for sniff going on other comment and the some what itchy noses and pinned eyes of a staff member

Got barred today as I had a go at the coke (cocaine) dealer that works serves you in the Toby carvery stevenage.

Cheap, cheerful, tasty and very filling. We have been a few times and know doubt will be going again.

Did nor start well! Sever when asked what draught beer to you have replied, Carking, and other names all Larger! Surely they should know that. Going up for food, the stuffing was in dried up lumps, you couldn’t break the apart to take any! The green beans looked good! No! They were so hard and tough I couldn’t ear any of them. The pork was not cut it was shredded. These Toby place are so hit and miss. Maybe give them more of a miss in future. Shame as I am a shareholder and draughtier beer drinker.

Ate here and terrible experience had to wait for long time to get seated food was OK but staff were none exestant saw a big group of them outside smoking finally gave up waiting for the bill and paid at the bar Toby sort it out service is cr,p

Booked a table for 8pm on Wednesday 14th August, no problems being seated. It was busy in there & can see staff were a bit overworked. We both ordered a prawn cocktail starter & once delivered after quite a wait, had to then find one of the waitresses to ask for bread which is suppose to come with it. We also had to find our own cutlery as this was not on the table when we were seated. When we eventually go upto the carvery all that was available was the left overs of the beef which was fatty. No Turkey, or gammon left and was just told that they had run out. What was frustrating was the lack of customer service, we appreciate it was busy however if they had informed us when we were seated that they was running low on meat due to it being busy we would have appreciated that & may have made the decision to either go somewhere else or have something else off menu instead. We decided to pay for what we had up at the bar and there was no apology from the waitress or any kind of attempt to show she cared. She explained to one of the guys serving at carvery the issue and all we heard was 'well it's not our fault' which comes across quite attitudal for someone working in a customer facing environment. We understand stress may have been a factor in this but really all that was missing from a customers point of view was showing they cared and an apology. We decided to go upto harvester up the road for a main course so ended up eating quite late. On this experience alone it wouldn't entice us to go back anytime soon.

We visited late afternoon/early evening and were greeted by a helpful attentive member of staff. He apologised for keeping us waiting. This wasn’t a problem as we could see he was busy and it looked like he was working on his own.

Visited on last Thursday afternoon with a friend. Sat at table 18. Staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered our drinks and then chose the carvery. Our drinks were ready and waiting on the table when we returned to our seats. Good selection of sides available and all nicely cooked. There was a wait on the Gammon but that was ok as I fancied pork and turkey anyway, generous portions provided. I love the potato gratin they do, it's got a lovely creamy sauce and is really yum! My only criticism was that the green beans were stringy so I left them. Other than that it was delicious. I really like the option of bread sauce too! Lovely gravy. Great visit, Thanks!

We visit, on average, once a week... especially on the days when I can’t be bothered to cook. If we didn’t get what we wanted, we wouldn’t visit.

Walked in place was a mess... one of the waitresses walked straight past and went up to some guys stood at the bar gave them all cuddles and kisses didnt bother to see to us. Another lady came said well I'm not sure we have any tables (it wasnt busy they were dirty and noone was cleaning them) we said we had booked. Got seated half hearted like we was an inconvenient then told meat would be over an hour..... it's a monday dinner time makes no sense!!! Also have to pay for a kids plate even though he is 2 and wpmt eat a kids size plate stupid. Poor service place is a dive wont be returning!!

Had breakfast here last week and wow, what great value, Plenty to eat and you can go back as many times as you like. I could barely move after eating here.

Lovely carvery you know what to expect, hot tasty fresh food great value for money great service to.

Modern pub, suitable for children and families. Next to Tesco's on London Road heading to Knebworth. Carvery standard plate was £10.50, great choice of vegetable and 5 meat joints. The roast potatoes were either crispy or cooked in beef dripping, the latter were delicious. Two negatives, the meat server was having a bad day, and rushing, definitely very small portion. And pig in blankets were being being charged extra as a starter, quite ridiculous for a carvery.

We booked a table for 9 on Fathers day. It was really busy as you would expect but the staff here where so helpful and always had a smile even though they must have been very stressed out with so many people to please The management should be very proud of their staff, very professional.

Visited on the 15th June for a family birthday meal. Order was taken, which included a child's meal with the rest being carveries. As we wanted to eat together, we waited 15 minutes before going to get the adult meals. At this point we asked the server how much longer my daughter would need to wait. He came back and said 2-3 minutes. We went to get our meals. Some 10 minutes later we flagged a member of staff and asked again, this time being told "we cook all our meals from fresh, so it's taking longer than we hoped". Shortly afterwards the meal arrived. This wasn't enjoyable, as the adults had their meal whilst my daughter sat there patiently (and hungry).

First time in the Old Forge, ore booked as are visit was on a Saturday night so wasn't sure if it was busy. Arrived slightly ahead of our planned time but that wasn't a problem.

Enjoyed a super carvery with fantastic service from the staff here. There was so much delicious meats choice, tons of great, imaginative veg and desserts to die for, was hard to choose! We will certainly be back soon, thank you to the girls and boys who looked after us!

Frequently visit this establishment for a quick & easy roast, so enjoyed when someone else cooks & no washing up. Prices are so reasonable and nice to see some different veg options each time. Also noted the big change in puddings recently the sponge puddings have gone from being a bit tired & stodgy to wonderfully light & fluffy, great menu change there. Staff are always lovely & friendly too.

What a lovely place. Lovely staff ,always making sure you were ok, quick service bringing the drinks over to table. Food out of this world. Yorkshire puddings as big as the plates. They also do lamb, the chefs are lovely and friendly and the choice of veg is brilliant. Because it gets busy it's best to book. You won't be disappointed. Well worth visiting.

We have been here a few times before, when you want a Sunday dinner but dont want to spend hours cooking it, the mess of all the dishes etc etc.

Lovely food lovely staff and managers clean and tidy 1000%worth the visit I ate every last mouth full and almost licked the plate clean

I like the place it was clean and tidy the food is lovely lots to choose from and it's hot aswell some of the staff are happy and cheerful I think I depend who you get but I think the chefs or kitchen staff need to cheer up a bit it gets very busy in there very popular

We went for a pre booked meal and regrettably had an awful meal.

As always food very tasty and service was with a smile and staff friendly and polite as always. Never go anywhere else when comes to good roast dinner

Let’s be honest the food at a Toby is never going to be gourmet but still sometimes the food just really looks unappetising!

Well I visited with family on a Sunday.. never been on a Sunday as I always go during the week. Weekdays or Saturdays are fine but Sunday is super busy the que for food is huge waiting around 20minutes similar to a canteen! We also have to keep waving staff down and ordered drinks kept getting forgotten so we had to remind them!

Pretty much no waiting around for food so great place to go when you're hungry Food good, friendly staff. Reasonably priced.

Our son wanted to take us out as a thank you, there was 8 of us, we were not seated on time and we wanted salad and meat, waiter said they had ran out of salad as a joke I said tesco's is next door, response was if you want to get it you can have it!! Then we let our son, partner and 4 children to get their dinner as it had been ages for them, they didn't come back for 20mins we then went up and waited and waited by the time we got back they had finished this isn't a restaurant its a canteen and not a good one. Never ever again would we give this organisation our custom, we would have walked out if it hadn't been organised by our son

Very busy as you would expect on a Sunday. However staff were efficient and made every effort possible to deal with the rush. Food as expected for Carvery although some of the veg items were dry or overcooked. All in all a good lunch but not exceptional.

We visited last night. Not been here for a while as its not always had the best reputation. But I was told it had improved, so I booked a table online for 2 of us.

Decided i wanted to celebrate my birthday with the family by having a good roast dinner. Food was good and cooked well, not the best i have had but fits the bill for what you pay.

Came to this Toby Carvery for the first time over a year ago, left an excellent review as had a nice evening and food was good, staff were excellent,

My first visit for 18 months whilst staying with relatives. Hasn't improved during that time. Vast congestion in the service area as usual. In our case it causes severe problems as one of party is disabled and couldn't get through to our seats. The food is “average” to be kind, meat is still tough as leather and vegetables overcooked. The severe congestion at the carvery could be eased by changing the queueing system BUT while there is so much footfall through the pub, profits are good, managers are happy and there is no incentive to improved. Rather pay a bit more and have a quieter atmosphere and better quality.
