Good beer. A bit expensive. Uncomfortable if it gets really busy.

Busy on a Friday evening when the Christmas lights were being switched on. Great range of beers.

If you're looking for piped music, tv screens and food, don't go to this pub. If you want a few pints of well kept hand pulled ale then this old style boozer is definitely the place for you.

The quintessential local pub. We are lucky to have it in Hertford and it is worth a visit for it's brilliant selection of cask ales and Belgian beers, fabulous hospitality from the staff and the sheer cosiness of the place.

Pop in for a drink while passing by. All I can say the best local pub in Hertford. Its cosy, traditional, small but have potential. Good selection of beers in cask and keg. More can and bottles are in fridge and good service so far. I enjoyed my time there.

Went to Hertford Castle Christmas market and had a mulled wine sat on a park bench, then on way back decided to pop in here for a lovely pint of landlord, sitting on the park bench was warmer than in here despite a barely going open fire, we both sat in here with our coats on and saw someone else put there’s back on, not quite how pubs used to be 🥶

Probably the best beers in Hertford? In this small cosy pub they serve an ever changing range of great beers from across the country. Also a good range of Belgian beers. Oh, and there is a little courtyard.

A nice little real ale pub. Nice atmosphere and comfy seating. A nice range of ales served "southern" style, i.e., no sparkler, which, unfortunately, made the beer flat instantly. The young fella pulling the pints had zero communication skills other than the odd grunt, but pulled a flat pint perfectly. I would recommend this pub unless you fancy a bit of "head". (On your pint, of course).

For a real ale drinker this pub is a must, if you like to sit down and enjoy a good pint and stimulating conversation without fruit machines and music then this pub is the place for you, a nice pork pie or scotch egg to go with your beer, fantastic.

Went for a one quite drink with my 5 month old daughter. Got told we would have to drink outside as no kids allowed, it was 16:00 in the afternoon. Got told this by the owner who was very rude in the way it was said .Ended up going to the white heart who were more the accommodating and said this wasn't the first time they had heard of this happing. Would not recommend this to my worse enemy

If you like great beer in a friendly atmosphere, then this is the place. Always a good selection of brews from the handpump plus bottled beers and a nice selection of bar snacks. Favourites on this visit Redemption dark mild and Mighty oak Bitter from Essex

This is an excellent pub. A range of interesting real ales and a friendly welcome. No music, no fruit machines and no sport on big screens. A proper old school local.

Came here a while back after a river lea walk from broxbourne. Great beer selection. Plus discovered they had a beer festival on that evening! Really nice surprise.

I visited last night with a friend as I considered they were quite good at enforcing safety measures to protect their customers from this deadly Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, they allowed an unmasked customer to breath all over us while looking at the price list. The customer became threatening and aggressive when I politely challenged him and asked me to 'take it up outside'. The staff member totally dismissed our concerns and defended the customer saying that they can't stop customers from not wearing a mask. This stance simply added fuel to the flames and put our safety at further risk. What I do know is that the pub has a legal Duty of Care for my Health & Safety and I am making enquiries with the relevant bodies today to establish if a breach of the law has taken place, and also to challenge their fitness to hold a Licence to trade and accommodate the public. The least they could have done was challenge the customer at point of entry just as many other pubs across Hertford and the rest of the UK do. It seems they put business revenue before the welfare of other vulnerable customers such as myself who has underlying conditions. I will not be visiting the Old Cross Tavern again as it is NOT Covid-19 secure and I value my own and the Health & Safety of others around me.

Exceptional real ale utopia. Quality ales on constant rotation. Very impressed.

I would like to give it 5 stars (and it did deserve it) as everything was great. Two beers well over 8 pounds and yes they were excellent. Just a bit pricey for my taste.

Our absolute favourite pub in Hertford - such a traditional, friendly, inviting place to be - cosy, welcoming with a lovely choice of beers and lagers. If i was to suggest one improvement I would say a little background music (live if possible) would make this place golden!

Traditional pub with a huge variety of beers on tap. Friday night 7:30pm here was full up with mainly middle aged and older folk, the odd dog, but not over the top packed. Very civilized, fast friendly service.

Been a while since I was last in the Old Cross, glad to see all is as it should be. Great service by friendly knowledgeable staff and top beers all in the perfect environment. Must come back again soon!
