Old Buttercross in Rutland

Meal for two on Saturday night , very quite very strange as it was only7.30

Came in for a Sunday roast and what I asked for they delivered. Had the best crispy and fluffy potatoes and the full dish was top tier would recommend coming again and was very worth the money and staff were given tips for there amazing service.

I wanted to treat my son to a lunchtime meal as he is soon to reach his 18th birthday, I had not heard of the Old Buttercross until I received a flyer for it so we decided to give it a go. Like most teenagers he's got hollow legs so I challenged him to try the Mega Mixed Grill , not wanting to let the side down, I thought I had better have that for my meal too. Glad to say the Old Buttercross didn't dissapoint and by heck you get a plateful, neither of us needed any tea that evening!

Went with good friend , never been to one of these pubs befor . The landlady was amazing and here staff was amazing as well . She should be very proud of what she has achieved. We where on our holiday and when we come back we will be back !!!

Service and food very disappointing

This is a fab place to eat with a great welcome I have a challenging dietary requirement with allergies to milk and milk products. The team here but especially Tom has made me feel at ease. Listening and looking at food options and adaptation to them. He also makes sure I know that my meal is just for me using a special identifier stick and stating what the allergy is. I have just moved onto the area and have already made this me go to place for good good, good staff and their welcome. Thank you guys for looking after me.

Was very quiet on a Tuesday lunchtime so service was quick. Southern fried chicken burger was really good.

We have just moved into the Oakham area! What a find The Old Buttercross is? The food is yummy, they cope with our allergies and adjust dishes, seamlessly without fuss! What a welcoming comfortable venue! Special thanks to Thomas who looks after us very well!

Our table was ready and we were served quickly and efficiently. The food was well prepared and the waitress could give knowledgeable advice on our choice of meal. We all enjoyed the meal. We would like to give our sincere thanks for the kind and considerate help given when my husband fell on his way out. We were all a bit shocked but got him home safely. After a cup of tea and a sleep he is now stiff but otherwise recovered. Thank you for your help. All the best for 2022. WE WILL DINE WITH YOU AGAIN

This was our first visit in what must have been 4 years. The restaurant changed hands and the food went downhill and was not as good as it could be which was why we did not go back until now. The present manager has restored the quality and presentation of the food and along with good service and a wide choice of menu. We will be going back again for sure.

Very nice evening. Staff very friendly and food was spot on. I had the mega mix grill it was spot on cooked to perfection would definitely recommend. Will be going back again nice friendly atmosphere 7 of us eat here and all was very pleased. Well done and thank you.

It was alright but the only thing that spoilt it was a waitress telling us our time was nearly up with what we have been through I thought she would have been a bit more considerate to us

I'd booked a table for 6 men in our social club online and changed it easily a few days before to 7 men. We had no starters and the place was nearly full, but our mains were served in reasonable time by a cheery competent waitress and we all cleared our plates of ample and delicious portions. Parking was easy, the toilet fine and we had £27 deducted from our bill via the 30% off mains offer. Excellent.

As it was half term I booked twice that week, Tuesday and Wednesday. Both times we enjoyed our meal. The staff were helpful and friendly.

The Old Buttercross in Oakham is a fantastic place to visit! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the staff truly go above and beyond to make your experience enjoyable. They are incredibly helpful and friendly, always ready with a smile and happy to assist with any request. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, and the setting is perfect for a relaxed meal or a catch-up with friends.

Family there for Boxing day lunch. Everything was fine except One desert that was frozen in the middle

We visited the Buttercross in Barleythorpe near Oakham as a group of 9 (4 adults and 5 kids), and we were so impressed! They were really accommodating, which isn’t always easy with a big group like ours, but they made us feel so welcome. The food came out quickly, was reasonably priced, and tasted great. The staff were brilliant—really attentive and friendly, which makes such a difference when you’re out with kids. It’s a fantastic place to take the family, and we’ll definitely be back again soon!

Absolutely amazing restaurant with a wide range of mixed food, open to both adults and children, the food was unique and very delicious, the staff was very kind and sweet ensuring we got the best service possible, would recommend for a family or a date

For the money, the food is good, nothing over exciting, but okay. The service is generally attentive, not particularly personal, standard national chain stuff. The atmosphere is pretty much as you might expect from an out of town national eatery. It's friendly enough as people go about their individual tables dining. The tables could do with a proper wipe down after guests have eaten however. We have been a few times recently and had to ask for this to be done. They get a bit of a quick flick over, but not a thorough wipe, in my experience.

Lovely chain pub, table booked for 1:30, the lunch rush looked like it was fairly past but oh, how wrong we were! We were pestered at our table by a woman as soon as we sat down which was odd since standard practice is to order at the bar. She seemed annoyed when I went to the bar to order as it would be quicker. We had pints of pop and waited,and waited,and waited some more. Nearly every table near us approached the bar to ask about their food so wait times were excessive for all,not just us. Nobody seemed to be in charge and it was painful to watch. After I went to the bar to complain, I was told it was busy and dismissed. Our food FINALLY arrived 47 minutes after we ordered, runny gravy, soggy pie, and dry mac and cheese,hardly worth such a wait. We sat and ate our meals without liquid as we'd finished our drinks and were damned if this place was getting another penny of our money! I'd advise whoever was in charge to consider advising customers of a wait time of nearly an hour on food,as had we known this we'd have gone elsewhere. Comping 3 glasses of fountain pop wouldn't have gone amiss either considering the ridiculous wait. Poor show indeed.

Perfect for a mid week meal out with wifey

A pleasant, family friendly restaurant that has two kids play areas and a pool table! Plenty of large tables for groups and families. The food was good, reasonably priced, with lots of choice on the menu for adults and younger guests. Sunday roast was a good sized portion with lots of trimmings. The chicken and mushroom pie was lovely. Our food took about 45 minutes to arrive, we didn't mind too much as it was a family get-together, but our toddler was getting hungry! Good, clean toilet facilities and lots of parking.

Tuna Mayo Melt A baked baguette filled with tasty tuna mayo and melted Mozzarella & Cheddar cheese. Topped with chopped chives. Expected a warm baguette (cold), as was tuna mayo. A few strands of cheese on top (melted, but cold) and no chives. Very disappointed, an expensive, cold lunch. No cutlery; had to request at bar and not enough staff on for a half term rush.

Lovely restaurant and play area

Have been living in Oakham for almost two years and kept meaning to try this place. It was quite busy - had to wait a little while for the food, but was well worth the wait. I’m often disappointed with restaurant fish & chips, but mine was outstanding. Girlfriend had lasagna - that was lovely too. Wish we’d have tried it sooner, we will definitely return soon.

The manager is such a lovely lady, very friendly, she works very hard, a lot of managers would leave it to the staff to wait on the tables when they aren't very busy, we went in at midday so it was quiet when we got there, but instead of leaving it to her staff she came over and served us .

Improved a lot since we visited a couple of years ago. Food was pleasant as was the atmosphere. Service was relatively quick considering the pub seemed fairly busy. Easy accessibility in the pub for my wife who is in a wheelchair, although with only two disabled spots - both of which were filled - we had to park at the far end of the car park but as the weather was fine that wasn't problem on the day.

Had two pizzas between us all, 'pepperoni' and 'meat lovers' and all of us sick the next day. Very disappointed as was told it was good. Shame.

Welcoming, friendly and brilliant service from the staff, I recently visited with my family and due to the boys being fussy eaters and me trying to eat healthy (which is always hard when eating out), the staff were accommodating when requested to swap certain food items, I also really appreciated it when the wait staff come back and checked after a few minutes if everything was to our satisfaction (not many places seem to do this anymore, 5* just for this alone). The place has a really nice atmosphere and we throughly enjoyed ourselves and we will be returning again and again.

Usually the service is great, but last night we were put in the kids area (after waiting 15 minutes to be seated), without having kids. No one came to ask if we wanted food or drink, ended up going to the bar ourselves. Food then took 20-30 minutes to arrive at our table. Poor couple next to us got put on a circle table designed to feed 6. They were clearly upset but too young to be taken seriously. I don’t think we will be returning. Yes it’s a pub, but spoons offers a better service at half the price, we usually go to your restaurant for the higher quality of dining compared to spoons, but as of last night you guys were much worse.

Shocking treatment. Went in tonight for a meal and sat for 1 hour after ordering food before it was served. My burger was dropped on the floor by accident by the manageress and she came straight out with a ‘new’ burger. It was stone cold. When I complained about the wait and cold food I received zero apology from her and was told that it couldn’t be cold as it was a new burger straight from the grill. I was also told it was only half an hour wait time! So I was obviously wrong! :-/ shocking service and treatment from a ‘manager’ Edit to answer comment below: No waiting time was advised at point of order at all. It wasn’t the manager that took our order. Agree that meal was knocked off, but you didn’t even have the decency to verbally offer this when I complained. You were too busy disagreeing with the time taken and the fact it was cold! It would’ve been far better to just apologise and offer the meal to be knocked off. The adults at our table all agreed that you didn’t handle the situation well at all. I’m sat with a clearly cold burger in front of me and all you could say was ‘it couldn’t possibly be cold as it’s just come off the grill!’ Very odd customer service skills indeed.

A group of 23 family and friends met up at the Old Buttercross and the staff reserved an area for us. The staff were lovely and attentive. The pub has a pleasant atmosphere and is lovely and clean. The food was tasty and I thoroughly enjoyed my surf and turf. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Great good and service, good prices. Grandsons love it at Old Buttercross. They like the outside play area too and now that snooker table is open for kids with parents overseeing, grandsons very happy.

Really lovely experience. The food was tasty. Service was quick and everyone was very friendly.

We were a party of 14, from different parts of the UK and some from Spain having our family reunion. We were probably later placing our food orders than we should have been, mainly because we had a few children still waking up from long car journeys and we all wanted to chat. This said, the staff were very tolerant and obliging. They even managed to negotiate a plethora of toys scattered around the table(s) we were sat at. Even though we all placed orders at different times, the excellent kitchen and serving staff were able to get the food out to us all at the same time, even though we were not bothered about that. The food was excellent and piping hot.

Great service. Dining with 2 Coeliac sufferers, who were giving outstanding service from ensuring they understood the menu and allergen information on the website to ensuring their food was clearly marked and delivered separately. Most chain pubs have not given the attention to detail that the Old Buttercross did and I feel safe taking them there time and time again.

Lovely relaxed pub atmosphere, plenty to entertain kids and dogs allowed. Hannah was very friendly and Veggie Chilli was gorgeous. Two meals and two drinks was under £30 which you can’t go wrong for. Highly recommend!
